Since even before it opened, I have bookmarked Harper Paige as I am always excited when a new business opens in Outer Sunset. Decided to get a refresh on my hair and booked a hair tint + hair cut with Tristyn. I wasn't quite sure about the hair tint as Google doesn't quite tell me what it is but I knew I needed a haircut and I wanted to get some color into my hair. Walked into my appointment and Tristyn was so kind and patient with me in going through different options and assessing my hair. Ended up going with a mini highlight instead of tint and I love the results. For the haircut she cleaned up some of the layers and cut off maybe a quarter inch? Final cost was $335 -- $200 for the highlight and $135 for the haircut. There wasn't an option to tip so I'm not sure if the tip was already built into the price?? And from what I can tell this place is credit card only. Overall, I am satisfied with my highlight and haircut. It is a little pricier than what I would usually pay (I think baseline in the city is around $90-$100 for a haircut?) so I would just be aware before booking and prices are listed for most services if you're booking online from their website. read more

Harper Paige is the first salon in SF that I have loved going to. Liz is an excellent colorist who makes sure my hair doesn't get damaged. I had my first bleach and tone from another salon and it wasn't a great experience. When I had my consultation with Liz she instructed me not to wash my hair or use heat tools a week before my next bleach an tone which saved my sensitive scalp from distress. She skillfully fixed my extra long roots blending them seamlessly. Now I see her every 4-6 weeks. She did a beautiful creamy blonde for my wedding - I got compliments the whole time on how amazing the color looked. Yesterday she did a silvery platinum pictured below. Liz always explains everything she's doing, checks in frequently to make sure my scalp doesn't hurt, and is very efficient. My hair is already healthier than when I first came in. I don't trust anyone else with my color. Jay cuts my hair and she also does a phenomenal job. It grows out great and I get tons off compliments on my cut as well. Overall, love this place and wish I'd know about it sooner! I used to wait til I had trips to NY to get it cut but now I get excited to get my hair done. read more

I go to Katie for all my hair color needs. She has safely taken my dark brown hair to various stages of balayage and back to dark brown seamlessly. The one time I strayed and had my hair colored by a different stylist back home, she knew exactly how to tone it back to a healthy and normal color. Even if the frequency of my appointments are sometimes far and few, I can always pick up where we left off. Katie is a great conversationalist and I am sometimes surprised that she remembers details of our previous conversations. Came here today for a cut and balayage. You have to be buzzed into the building, which stumped me for a minute. There's plenty of parking across the street at White House Garage, so that was convenient. Liz did my color (I'll attach a photo), and she was great. Very friendly and explained what she was doing and why, which I love. She took my basic brown hair and made it more sun kissed and caramel. Perfect color! She washed the dye out, applied a toner, and shampooed/conditioned with a GREAT scalp massage. Next I went to Micah for a haircut, and he did a perfect job. I showed him a picture of Karlie Kloss with a sort of sleek-looking playful shag, though I told him I wanted to keep my length. He chopped in a bunch of layers to frame my face, then blow dried and chopped some more. He used minimal product, which is perfect for me, and I ended up with a low-maintenance cut with movement and bounce. Both he and Liz were super sweet, and I look forward to seeing them again! Thank goodness I won't have to go too soon though, since my total bill was about $300....that's the only detractor! I highly recommend them both. read more

My normal colorist was completely booked and I was desperately in need of a root touch up so I booked an appointment here because of all the positive reviews. First off, this place was really hard to locate, but that wasn't a huge problem since I arrived early. When I walked in I was greeted but the receptionist who was really friendly. I only waited a couple of minutes before being seated and meeting the stylist. We decided on a pink / blush color. She applied the bleach to my roots pretty quickly and checked in every few minutes but it was super painful. I have no idea what type of bleach they are using but I have never experienced so much pain in my life and I have been getting my hair bleached for over half a year now. My scalp felt like it was on fire and I started getting a headache. My eyes were watering and I felt like I was about to faint. Finally she rinsed it out, but while my hair was wet and tangly she did a second application. She was really rough with the brush and tugging on my hair which resulted in a lot of breakage. I could hear my hair snapping as she hastily applied the bleach. Even though my scalp was raw from the bleach it felt like she was stabbing my scalp with her brush as she was using a lot of force. After, she applied the toner and towel dried my hair. When she towel dried, the towel was super rough and she really frizzed up my hair. I've never had any stylist towel dry my hair that roughly. Her assistant blow dried my hair which was the only nice part of the service. As soon as I left, I could feel scabs all over my scalp and hives all on my neck. It's been hours and the hives have now spread all over my body. Like I said, I've been getting my hair bleached for a while now and this has NEVER happened to me. My roots are also a lot more yellow than the rest of my hair and it's not even pink, it looks more purple. Worst of all, the root touch up cost me $300 tax and tip. Never coming back!! read more

The reason I am never coming here again. I got my hair done by Katie a few months ago, she touched up my roots, took amazing care with my damaged hair paying attention to only put color on the roots and not pull it through - to prevent breakage. and it turned out FABULOUS.. couldn't rave enough about her. Blended amazing. was perfect. Next time I needed an appointment she was not available so I got their head colorist. she kept the bleach in too long for the roots and fried my hair off, and when it came time for funky colors that I wanted, it came out totally different and splotchy color all over. Her assistant broke so much more hair than necessary by RUBBING damaged hair on damaged hair, while tangling up my whole head in the process (you're not trying to get grease stains out of an old pot) After the worst wash experience ever, my wet hair is being RIPPED out by her assistant with his brush, the colorist doesn't even acknowledge that she ****** up, and surprised I don't like it. Surprised! surprised I don't like my new fragile, broken, GREEN splotchy locks and now I have inch long bangs, and your assistant doesn't even know how to run a comb through it. how can you just pretend MY GREEN HAIR IS NICE ? SO thinking you know, for customer service sake I would get some sort of discount for leaving with splotchy pink and splotchy green BROKEN sopping wet hair, I get a $200 bill for the bleach and tone. almost 200% more what I paid the first time I came here, and all because this woman is the head colorist. I suck it up because I really wanted to come back and see Katie. I ask to make an apointment to see Katie again, so she can damage control my hair and i am told she is not available. Why? When can I book ? She is booked for TWO MONTHS. SO just my luck I think. Now the only reason I am writing this review is because I planned 2 months ahead to book Katie, and I call them and guess what ? shes free next week. not a cancellation. but multiple openings. too bad I can't get my hair colored by such a talented hairdresser all because of this salons customer service. And all this after I was Katie's customer first. Go see Katie. she is amazing with funky colors, bleach, and she won't rush with your hair which is very important for the end result. After bringing this to their attention, I did get reimbursed my $200, but I really miss my perfect blonde hair. Went here last week for a cut, and it's actually turned out to be the worst cut I've ever received (this includes $20 cuts I got in high school). I have long, straight hair, so it's pretty hard to mess up terribly. I asked Sarah to maintain the kind of cut I had -- long, slightly curved in shape at the bottom, with very subtle layers along the last inch of my hair. I actually explicitly said "I love what I have right now [naming the same features I just named], I just need the ends cleaned up while maintaining the length as much as possible." So, imagine my surprise when late in my haircut, I start to see Sarah chopping off 4-5 inch sections of my hair! She didn't ask, just started chopping off huge portions of my hair "because I hate layers" (never mind what I like, apparently!) and because "it grows out better this way." Again, without asking, and going against what I said earlier about just cleaning up the ends while maintaining the length. This wasn't an occasional strand or two that got snipped, but actual *clumps* of my hair. I ended up losing about HALF the volume of the last several inches of my hair, which makes my hair look incredibly thin and like I'm trying too hard to grow out thin hair that just doesn't have the thickness it should have for the kind of length I usually have. I've grown my hair out for years and loved its length and fullness. I usually get a lot of compliments on it, but am pretty sure that won't be happening any longer -- at least in the next year or two until this damage to the body of my hair can be grown out and cut away. I was simply stunned when this was happening and froze up -- I'd trusted that Sarah knew what she was doing, because this place seems so highly reviewed -- but no. What's left at the ends of my hair is cut bluntly and doesn't lay flat or in the same direction. Basically, really low-skilled cut (but at a high-end price), and I've lost somewhere between a year to two year's worth of volume/growth. I've given it about a week to see how it's washed out, as I've used my own products and styled it the way I usually do, etc, but it's just not working. Finally, I should add that I really wanted to like this place! The salon is bright, everyone is friendly, and they seemed smart but relaxed and low-key. I had a good feeling when I walked in, and until the very end when Sarah started chopping off huge parts of my hair willy-nilly, I was sure that I'd be back. No longer. It's also especially disappointing because when I called, the receptionist asked if I had a stylist preference, and I responded "no, since I'm new, but anyone who might be especially good with long hair would be great!" Someone who simply starts chopping off huge sections of someone's hair without asking is not what I'd categorize as someone who's good with long hair. Not really sure what to do at this point, but I've signed up for Yelp just to write this review -- it's that bad. I've really just been horrified by this whole thing (not having half my hair now) for the past week. I take a lot of pride in my hair, or at least I used to, and now a huge chunk of it is no longer there. Really horrifying. read more

I cannot tell you how WAY overpriced my hair experience was at this salon. My first time with highlights at this place (or ever) and let me just say, I had dark brown healthy shiny hair going into this experience and came out with a brittle, brassy mess. The initial in-salon look was fine--pretty and blown out, but I immediately noticed that the highlights were too long in my hair. Some strands were way too yellow/ orange, but Marie, my colorist seemed to think they looked great. My hair is now very damaged, weak and dull-- and the highlights are coppery and cheap looking--at $225 that's exactly what i didn't want. The pricey haircut that followed was also nothing to write home about. I got home and I washed my hair, and I didn't even see the difference. Not worth it. My little salon in WC would've done the trick and at 1/3 price. read more

It has been years since I hopped on Gilt City and I noticed a balayage/highlight deal with Harper Paige. Prior to this I was at Barrow Salon multiple times. I had my appointment with Timmory and we agreed on browns that have a "natural cascading affect" on my black hair. The final outcome was haphazardly bleached light brown across my hair! In retrospect, all my colors in prior salons used foil where she did not and just layered the bleach/(lack of) color onto my head without any protection (gown was dirty afterwards). I should have suspected things were not right.... I had my cut before and had to wait for 30mins. It was 11:30 when we finally started and I had to be out by 12:30 for another appointment. Needless to say that did not happen. After the toner was done I just had to leave with wet hair which was 1PM....I had been in the salon since 10AM. Not like I am a Beverly Hills housewife and need to be there all day, but it was kind of obnoxious. I never saw her check my hair after the bleach rinse. I am pretty disappointed to where now I have an appointment back to Barrow in 2 days to correct the color. I don't even want to bother getting my hair corrected at HP. She's probably good with the light hair clientele, but not sure about the darker haired clients. So be wary!! Color is exceptionally hard to master so I am staying put at Barrow Salon as long as they are in biz. I learned my lesson. read more

Oh how I long for the days when coloring my hair used to be an option that I only needed to do it once a year if I felt like I needed to feel extra special. Sigh. Even back when that was the case, Marie at Harper Paige was my go to for adding some color to spice up my life. That was years ago however, pre-Harper Paige and I have followed her like a puppy to her new spot because she has never made my hair anything but beautiful. Sometimes we go lighter, sometimes darker....but no matter what she does, it always turns out pretty, natural looking and exactly how I want it. I have yet to visit her and not receive a ton of compliments on my hair. Every single time. Now that I'm oldish and option has turned into mandatory, I see her WAY more frequently and haven't had anyone else color my hair for years. She is fun to sit and talk smack with and has turned into a friend......at least while I'm sitting in that chair at her mercy! The salon itself has a warm feeling and the staff are always friendly and sweet. Although it is downtown, Harper Paige doesn't have that annoying pretentious feeling that so many downtown SF salons have. Parking is a pain but what do you expect for the city???? The best hair salon experience I've ever had in the Bay Area. I'm so happy I looked so sad and drabby in that Ross by Powell St, warranting Hunter (a stylist apprentice) to approach me for a free haircut. No more than a week prior to going to Harper Paige I had the worst hairdresser experience of my 5 years in the Bay Area at Carlton Hair Salon in the mall. I was ready to give up until Hunter met me. I was directed to the charming salon in Tillman's alley. It was to say the least tres chic for a salon and I was offered beverages upon arrival. Water in a mason jar?! I was happy already. After putting a robe on I was ready for the pampering. Hunter shampooed and washed my hair and was so delicate and careful in perfecting his cutting technique for my A line he sought to salvage. My hair was over texturized in the back and I had choppy, uneven bangs. He couldn't do much more than to make my bangs look more even but he did revive my bob - I loved it. It was less of a sharp A line and more of a blunt and full bodied bob. I was so happy I wanted to cry. His mentor Marie was by his side from time to time pointing out tips and places for him to improve but she was a great teacher from my experience under them both. I highly recommend this salon for their great service and for the extra care and consideration they go through in examining your hair. Everyone has a different hair type and there are better ways of treating one type over another (i.e. thick, curly, straight, thin). It is up to the hairstylist at hand to make decisions and thoughtfully treat their client's hair with all those things in mind. Clearly the stylists are Harper Paige do just that. read more

I basically was looking like a witch and Ceci did a great job at listening to me. I brought in images of what I wanted my hair to look like and she worked with me to trim my hair and still keep it long and bouncy. She was very friendly and we chatted about life. She was super sweet and I am definitely going back to see her. As for the salon itself it was a little tough to find and you have to park at a public parking lot and spend some money there, but I liked how it looked inside. It was very chic and the ambiance was perfect. They didn't have time to see me for a coloring appointment seeing as I booked my haircut via Beautified, but I've scheduled one for next week. And the colorist who will see me come by to talk about what we're going to do so I definitely liked that. I've never colored my hair before so will let you know what that's like next week. This review is for David Tolls at Harper Paige. I started coming to David when I moved to San Francisco in 2007. At the time he was at Cowboys & Angels, and a friend referred me to him. Thank god I found him - I have never had anyone touch my hair besides David for the last 5 years and don't plan to make a change anytime soon. I have never been happier with my hair, nor received as many compliments on it since I have been going to David. I get people stopping me on the street or looking at my pictures on Facebook and everyone wants to know how I get such a fabulous cut. The great thing about David is that he knows how to cut hair so that it not only looks good for a couple weeks, but grows out beautifully. Really I can't say enough good things about him. Also great - we've done some experimenting over the years. I've had a few different style of bangs, no layers, lots of long layers, etc. He's fun to experiment with but he's not pushy at all. He always wants to make sure I look my best and hottest, and I love him for that. When he recently moved to Harper Paige, there was no question, I'd be following him there. I like his new location - it's chic, but relaxed. Everyone is really nice and there's never a hard sell on products. I've been seeing Katie and Brandie for the past 6 years. They are true artists with their craft and I will not see anyone else. EVER. Katie - a color fairy. She grants whatever you wish (within taste and reason, of course) and makes it just that much more spectacular. I am Korean and I love my hair color more on the cooler, dark brown side. Katie did some ombre pieces (which she handpainted on) and she magically made my color non-brassy and had it stay that way for WEEKS. This girl is a freakin' genius. I've been seeing her for almost a year ever since I decided to go red. She totally got what I wanted but also told me what I needed after getting to know my personality and style. She always reels me back in to something a little more manageable when I come in with a picture of bleached blonde (my hair is dark brown) to do something a little more subtle. I love Harper Paige! I've been getting my hair colored there by Liz Jones for several years. She does an excellent job and my hair always looks amazing. I get compliments on it all the time. I get a single-process color tint in a dark brown color, plus a gloss toner. My hair looks shiny and incredible when I walk out the door, plus their stylists do an excellent job on the blow out! I've also had my hair cut by Jay, and she does amazing work. Great vibe in the salon, parking at Sutter Stockton Garage is fairly reasonable for the area. I try to grab the first time slot on Saturday mornings, because it's the least busy in that part of town and parking is cheapest. read more

Such a great salon! It was a little hard to find the first time -- Tillman street? Had my hair cut by Nicole and she knew just what type of look I was going for without my having to explain much. She also did a beautiful job styling it which NEVER happens. Katie colored my hair and did an amazing job. She made it look like hair just naturally lightened -- just like I had spent a few weeks at the beach. It was also totally affordable. I highly recommend. read more

It's been too long since I've had a haircut...I've been procrastinating...my regular hairstylist moved to the East Bay and I'm just so busy with work that just can't seem to get myself across that bridge! So reluctantly I decide it's time for a new hairstylist/salon.... A friend suggested that I visit Harper and Paige and I am so glad she did. I called this morning and they somehow managed to squeeze me in the same day for a cut and single process color. Coby gave me a fabulous cut and now my head is 20 lbs lighter! Katie got rid of all my grays and brought my color back to a shiny natural color! Alexis did the beautiful blowout on my hair. I walked out feeling like I was in a Prell commercial with a head full of bouncy, shiny, amazing hair!!! Oh and if that wasn't enough, they were all so nice and friendly making me feel like I was at a friend's house getting my hair done! Although to some people a $120 cut (my hair is really long) seems rather ridiculous, I'm a firm believer that you get what you pay for. I have no doubt my cut will grow out nicely and they also give complimentary bang trims, both of which will prevent me from having to get a haircut as often. It's worth it...they will really make you look and feel fabulous!!! read more
