At the end of August (I am really behind with reviews!) I went away to Italy and Slovenia. The first day was spent on a bit of a whirlwind tour of Venice which is great for me as I'd never been before. In between the walking tour and boat tour of the lagoon, we had an hour to spare. Since we were in piazza San Marco, and that someone from work told me that I must go to Harry's, I decided now was the time and that I'd never forgive myself if I didn't try it. A friend of mine came with me, though others in the group seemed more interested in ice cream than bellinis. It took a little while to find and in the end I have the Yelp app to thank for getting there. The interior is old fashioned and it's old fashioned service. Though we didn't eat, we saw people there who were eating and it looked like the proper, old fashioned silver service. I'd definitely like to come back to eat next time I'm in Venice and have more time. As we only had 45 minutes (by the time we found it) we just had a famous Bellini. I like that it is served in a tumbler rather than a flute. I went for a normal Bellini which was €16.50 and my friend had a rum bell in which was €20.50. A little pricey but to be expected a) in the centre of Venice and b) in the place Bellinis were invented. For the experience it's definitely worth it. Worth noting that, as is normal across various places in Europe, they add the IVA tax to your bill. During the day, you can wear what you like but imagine in the evening it would be quite a dressy place. There is a note that they ask that you ask the waiter before taking photos inside the bar. In an age where everyone instagrams everything, it's quite old fashioned but then it's in keeping with the feel of the venue. I asked the waiter politely in Italian and he said it was fine. I don't think they'd say no but it's respectful to ask . There was a group of loud American/Canadian (I can never tell the difference in accents!) who were being disrespectful (IMO) of where they were and didn't ask before taking a raft of selfies. The waiters seemed to get a bit peed off which is understandable. I will update the rating when I have eaten there as I didn't feel I could award try whole 5* based just on the drink. read more

Fancy decor, white coated and bow-tied waiters, great location, horrible service. Can't comment on drinks or food, as we were ignored the entire time and and were not waited on so we left. Walked in last night, welcomed with a smile, we informed the staff we just wanted some drinks and asked if we could sit at the open bar where there were at least six empty stools. Instead, they direct us upstairs with a point, spent the next few minutes trying to find how to get there... have to meander between wait-staff as they hurry from room to room. Finally found a sitting area upstairs that was relatively empty. Sat down and another couple did the same after us. Young waiter gave them menus and then went and made bellinis, brought them back to them, walking by us each time. Maybe we should have flagged one down? My spouse told me of a place we were going to while in Venice. Harry's Bar. Home of the infamous bellini drink, which is prosecco mixed with peach puree. Okay... Never heard of it or them before. ATMOSPHERE: The small bar is located just off the Grand Canal, west of St. Mark's Square. The decor is classic and simple. There's a small bar and a mix of table and bench-style seating. We were lucky to score two seats at the bar as we were able to watch the bar in action. The staff were dressed in white formal wear. We were in our American vacation wardrobe lol. MENU: We noticed some pasta and meat dishes flying by but we didn't have any food. BEVERAGE: Bellini - What can I say except that it was good, but nothing sensational. Pricey at around $20 per small glass. It's a pretty color, kind of a pale peach. There was definitely more juice in there than there was sparkling wine, resulting in zero buzz, but very refreshing. I guess the point of it is to enjoy the drink on its home turf in the old-world ambiance. SERVICE: The bartender was professional and friendly. Drink service was quick. Once I navigated the streets of Venice and arrived at Harry's the people with me were elated. Yes, in some people's eyes I would have made a few wrong turns, but to me I was exploring without a map and the using the stars on a foggy night to guide my way. Walking into the world famous (maybe now notorious) Harry's, I was welcomed with a warm glow of the people and the lighting of the bar. Walking in was like walking in the room with warm glow that James Cameron used when he did the movie the Titanic, except the fashion was not circa the time period and Harry's would have been 1930-40, resembling the brink of a depression. But I would say it was a wonderful experience. The notorious part of Harry's would be their prices. Just shy of 20€ for the basics and it goes up from there. Going to Harry's isn't about drinking on a budget it about a level of service and experiencing a piece of history. A place where Hemingway was once know to hangout in the Concordia room. Other such as Charlie Chaplin and Orson Wells would also frequent. It is for some, a once in a lifetime experience so order a Bellini and drink it in. read more

Well, there isn't much to say that hasn't already been mentioned. This is a"famous" bar just about right on the canal. The #1 vaporetto stops right near the entrance, but it's easy to miss. The bar area is very small and the tables are cramped and crowded. In my opinion, it's a huge tourist trap, although when we were there, there were actually a lot of locals as well. I read all of the reviews mentioning how expensive everything is, but was still shocked by the menu. Trust me, it's insanely expensive. I had a Bellini and my friend a bloody Mary, and our bill was $38,50€!! I thought about ordering beef carpaccio, but the "small" was $46€. But hey, they give you complimentary olives when you order a drink! I am giving them 3 stars because I knew what to expect and the service as good. Also, the Bellini was actually pretty delicious. Totally random find while in Venice, but friendly staff and a nice pit stop to have a cocktail. This review is based on drinks, not a dining experience. Very small bar as you would expect. Harry's has multiple locations worldwide so it's very recognizable. They are known for the Bellini's and we had a couple, however, they weren't that strong and rather expensive. I would recommend the Martini - I've never had anything like it! (You'll walk away with a buzz :) ) Overall, a fun experience and I'll be back next time I'm in Venice. read more

What can I say...I was curious. Harry's Bar is famous for a couple of reasons: 1) the originators of the Bellini and 2) it's clientele which included Ernest Hemingway. I had to stop by and have a Bellini and soak it all in. The bar looks like it's been untouched since Hemingway visited. It's a small room that's the size of my living room with one bar. Harry's is famous not just for the Bellini, but also for the time Charlie Chaplin, Orson Welles and Ernest Hemingway spent there. If you like touristy venues, you will Love Harry's bar. The interior is gracious with dark wood, cream walls and shaded lamps on the walls. The seating is comfortable if a bit crowded. The waitstaff wear white coats which, along with the decor, gives you the feeling of going back in time. They are polite and speak English. You will see them when you order your drink, when they are brought to your table, and never again. The kitchen was closed when we arrived so we were unable to order food, which we would have done. A small bowl of green olives is brought to the table with your drinks. Pay on your way out the door. Our drinks were €20 each plus 10% added. I'm sure you can find a less expensive beverage in Venice, but if you are coming to be in a place of history, then Harry's it is. Be sure to get lots of pictures to remember the moment! read more

What a cool atmosphere! The drinks were as I would expect from guys dressed to the 9s in white coats. Very relaxed atmosphere. We were in shorts, so we were escorted upstairs which was a bit odd, but we weren't turned away and the service was still exceptional as I would expect. The wood planked walls and sharp dressed waiters made me feel as if I was in a beautiful ship and the drinks came with a chicken compote. My Bloody Mary cane with a bowl of olives without me asking fur them, and my loves Bellini was delicious. I was in Venice for a wedding and had heard about how Harry's bar and was a favorite of Hemingway, Truman Capote, and other Americans of that era. I had been in Venice for a week and this was my last stop before catching my flight in the morning. The first thing the waitstaff told me when I entered the bar was that I had to be out in 45 minutes because of dinner service. Eventually, a waiter brought me a menu. The drinks are expensive, but what makes them even more overpriced is the lack of atmosphere. There are large signs around saying no photos and that they respect their patrons' privacy, so I did not take out my cell phone and tried to enjoy my drink. (I understand the celebrity thing, I've seen several in real life and try to respect their space.) A group of four from England came in and there were not enough seats so I offered to move to a nearby table. The most entertaining thing about Harry's was watching people's reaction to the 25 euro drink prices, and watching the patrons (I was one of maybe five Americans) in the bar complain about how long their drinks took. Along with the drink, the waiter brought a pureed breaded chicken cake (like a crab cake but made with chicken) and a paltry glass of olives. Not feeling the vibe at all, I just wanted to leave and tried to ask for the check. It took a good ten minutes to get the attention of the manager and another fifteen for them to give me the bill. On the way out, I heard to of the wait staff make a comment in Italian about another American wanting a selfie. (I speak enough to get the gist of what he said.) In summary, I paid 21 euro for a less than average Bellini, a waitstaff that was not courteous, and a dated, overcrowded atmosphere because some famous dead people drank there and I might get to see a celebrity. This place is about as charming as a railway station waiting room. the clientele seems to be made up exclusively of tourists. my tom collins was good but far from extraordinary. at such steep prices (€23 = $27) i would have expected much more. chances are, if you're staying at a good hotel, that your hotel bar offers drinks that are just as good in much nicer surroundings and at more reasonable prices. i will not come back! read more

Had a quick look upstairs, menu prices range from 20-30 euros for starters, to 40-50 for a main. I was happy to stay and have a drink, but did not feel the need to linger. I have eaten at all of the Cipriani locations and, despite being the legacy location, this one is by far the worst. The only thing worse than the bland risotto and weak melon combination is the crusty old bread assortment. Smaller than expected, but very cute and classic. Must go on a busy night to get the full experience. Or go on a slow night to revel the history without distraction. We chose both, and on the busy night we met the most random people who we found connection with and the night took an unexpected and magical turn as we all bonded watching the bartenders smash ice in linen to make our daiquiris. This establishment is a Venice legend. I believe the prices are set higher so they are not overrun with tourists. You will not be allowed in if you are wearing shorts. The service was very good. The wait staff was very professional and friendly. The Bellini was invented in 1948 by Giuseppe Cipriani, the founder of Harry's Bar in Venice. The drink consists of puréed white peaches and Prosecco. They are refreshing and delicious and come with a €22 price tag. I had the "Light Lunch" which was one of the three fixed-priced options. I have purchased the Cipriani pasta (Classic Tagliolini is my favorite!) from gourmet stores and it truly is some of the best packaged pasta on the market. The pasta today happened to be Tagliolini with olive oil and fresh parsley and Parmesan which was very nice and light...perfect for lunch on a hot summer day in Venice. The baked sea bass served with baby artichokes was good but probably not the best I have ever eaten. The homemade lemon sorbet was fabulous. (I want the recipe!) You may have to call for reservations. I spoke to the GM and he was aware of issues in the website for online booking. This location is actually not listed to book a reservation. Open Table will take you to the NYC location. I would have loved to have purchased the two cookbooks but my lunch was €107. I felt I had spent enough. I have wanted to eat at Harry's Bar since my first visit to Venice over 30 years ago. I am glad I dined at this legendary bar, I enjoyed a real Bellini, and experienced the fabulous fresh pasta. On a very cold but sunny day in Venice, the day before New Year's Eve, we decided to stop at Harry's Bar for lunch and escape the bitter chill. Knowing that we might not be successful in obtaining a table right away without a reservation we persevered. Downstairs was unsurprisingly packed. After a very gracious welcome we were immediately, to our luck and delight, escorted upstairs and given a perfect table for four. This was my second time at Harry's Bar in Venice, the first being eleven years ago on Christmas Eve. Both times we were treated as though we might have been their most valued returning guests. Our server was as professional and gracious as he could be. Aside from the warm ambiance, one of the things I most enjoy at Harry's is how personable the "old school" service is, and we were not disappointed that day. In fact, the service was about the most efficient and friendly I have experienced in a high-end restaurant of its sort. Our lunch began with an extraordinarily delicious zuppa di cardi. Next came their signature club sandwich, consisting of chicken, pancetta, tomato, lettuce, cheese, and mayonnaise, in a house-made toasted bread. It was a perfect combination of flavors and freshness. We also ordered the ravioli di magro. It is difficult to put into words just how fabulous this dish was. The pasta was impossibly thin - a feat I stand in awe of as an avid pasta maker myself - and the filling contained the exact amount of ricotta so as to not overwhelm the flavor of the spinach. The quality and taste of the butter and parmesan sauce was pure ambrosia. Our wines accompanying this feast were magnificent as well. We decided on no desert but only coffee and tea, so we were particularly surprised and delighted when a wonderful small assortment of cookies arrived with the beverages. A few minutes later our server stunned us with a complimentary slice of their sumptuous vanilla cake. After our mild protestations he told us we might have, if we like, just a taste. Needless to say, it was as fantastic as it looked and not a crumb remained on the plate! Yes, Harry's Bar is expensive, but look where it is! We dined for over two hours in bliss overlooking one the world's most iconic and beautiful views. It is important to note that we never once felt pressured to hurry and the service was absolutely and unquestionably top-notch. That our conversation was never impeded by the noise level of this very busy and crowed restaurant was a tribute to the designers of its interior. I cannot wait to return. Look, it's a tourist trap ... I get it. But it was also an experience worth having! Naturally we got Belinnis because it's Harry's bar. Also got their famous carpaccio which I thought was just OK. I got a prix fixe sort of thing 50 Euro for Belinni, carpaccio and pasta. Sometimes the imitations exceed the original and I've had many great carpaccio in the US. This was heavy on the sauce - if I were to go back, I wouldn't get it. Pasta was fine. The BEST thing we had there was the proscuitto and melon and it was the best proscuitto and melon we had on our trip (and I had it a lot of places.) DIVINE. Their bottle of prosecco is a must and reasonably priced. We had the tomato rosemary risotto which was delicious! My fiance ordered the cuddle fish risotto but got the scampi zucchini risotto by mistake which he was ok with because it was so amazing and unique. My receipt currently reads: 2x ravioli di spinaci 48E; 2 bottles of water at 6E each; a SPRITE at 11 E!!; Gin Martini 14E; 2x Harry's hamburgers 36E; Mai Ta 14E. FOR A TOTAL OF 135E. Gentlemen should wear long trousers or be prepared to be shunted to the "leper room" upstairs which is truly hideous. Otherwise one of the most forgettable bucket list stops you'll ever have. If you really want a Truman Capote + Hemingway vibe go to the bar at Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans and they'll throw in William Faulkner and Stephen Ambrose to boot.
