So here's the story... I bought a couple of pairs of shoes about four months ago. The store has been reopened with new owners. The sales people are very friendly and attentive, and I had no difficulty getting someone to help me. I went in looking for some good walking shoes. The salesman showed me both the kind I was looking for (Brooks) and another kind as well, which is waterproof and slip on (Ons) I ended up buying two pairs. The Ons are terrific and are my favorite rainy weather shoe. The Brooks were too large, but I didn't figure that out until it was too late to return them. I came back and the manager was extremely helpful in providing some inserts so that the shoes now fit quite well. So overall, I am very happy with my experience. The only thing I would say is, I'm not sure if the sales staff are really expert at shoe fitting so I would suggest being extra careful to make certain that the shoes you are buying actually correctly fit your feet! I had Mel and she was wonderful. We spend about an hour trying to find the right shoes that would allow me to walk on concrete in comfort. She was very diligent in listening and then thinking of shoes that would work for me. And patient! We must have tried on 20 pairs of dress shoes and 10 pairs of sneakers. We found a great match for dress shoes-something I never would have thought to try. Unfortunately there were not the sneakers in my size but Mel encouraged me to take a pic so I could order online. The store was fairly empty when I came in at about 12 this afternoon. I found 2 pairs of boots that I wanted to try on. While I was standing there holding the boots, one salesperson walked passed me and just smiled. First off, I understand recent lower reviews for Harry's Shoes, given that there seemed to be a decline in customer service and inventory, post 2020. I'm not sure what they were struggling with at that point. HOWEVER - Harry's has NEW OWNERS and they have resurrected it into the Harry's I always knew and loved for the past 30-plus years! I've always loved getting comfy shoes there -- my goal is to find shoes that are comfortable for my middle-aged feet without having them scream "Middle Aged!" Inventory is improved now, but the real icing on the cake is the customer service, and the return policy is much better, offering a full refund for unworn shoes in their original packaging returned within 30 days. Kelsey, the general manager, is terrific: patient, personable, knowledgeable, and epitomizes the best of what we remember from the "old" Harry's. She was extremely helpful to my husband and me and, when I came back two days later to try on a different size, she immediately recognized me and sussed out why I was there and helped me to make the right choice. She was training someone new who seemed equally knowledgeable and friendly. Honestly - the atmosphere was generally friendly, without feeling intrusive, and some of the other customers were chatting with us and each other about what a fantastic experience they were having! read more

I had a wonderful experience at Harry's today. The atmosphere is wonderful- so much nicer than the prior owners . I spoke on the phone with Kennie who stated that the store carried what I was looking for- a black shoe that is somewhat dressy. Kennie referred me to Jo who was pleasant, patient and helpful. We could not find a shoe store where my 75+ yr old bf could find shoes for his big feet. I sent him to Harry's where a salesperson approached him as soon as he walked in and said, "eleven and a half wide?" He was thrilled and walked out an hour later with 2 pairs of shoes. Man, I am shocked at the negative reviews here. After not finding what I wanted at DSW, my friend told me about this independently owned spot that she loves and has been going to her whole life. I had such an incredible experience that afterwards we looked them up on Yelp and were really surprised by the low rating. I haven't bought anything online and haven't had to return anything - two recurring situations in a lot of the negative reviews. The return policy on their site seems the same as DSW (unworn, in original packaging, with receipt, etc.) with the exception of giving you just 15 days from date of purchase as opposed to the 60 DSW gives. I also saw complaints that shoes could be found cheaper online, which had me racing to the internet in a panic, but my particular shoes were the same price almost to the dollar as online retailers. Your mileage may vary obviously, but this was my experience. I also wrestle with the fact that online retailers and larger companies can afford to offer lower prices as opposed to independently owned ones, and if I have the ability and the price difference isn't significant, I will choose to pay more to keep a smaller business going. I came in knowing exactly what I wanted: fuzzy black waterproof winter boots that were more chunky than sleek and made me look cute. I went right up to a sales person before they could even approach me and off they took me on a tour of their massive selection. It's like a shoe wonderland, my head was spinning. I also really liked my salesman, David. He measured my foot before he brought me anything and also asked what size I usually wore, I liked that thoroughness. After I had gone around the store with him and tried on the pairs of shoes we had looked at, I did a go around the store on my own to see if I found anything else I liked. I stuck with my original choices but was seriously tempted by like five other pairs, they have really cute stuff. David also bought me out another pair of boots that were a little different in style than the ones I was looking at, but still a black, waterproof, fuzzy winter boot. They were the last in my size and a little more expensive than the others. Was this an upsell? Probably, but it wasn't heavy handed and the boots were in line with what I had been looking at. I didn't take offense (I actually really liked them too) and ended up buying two boots from the original set I had looked at. I love the boots I bought, they're gorgeous and great quality. And the overall customer service and selection is miles away from what I experience at other shoe stores. David was extremely attentive and helpful, he knew about the brand, shoe maintenance, and also had styling suggestions. He directed me to exactly what I asked for and brought me shoes to try on quickly. None of that happens at DSW. This is going to be my first stop the next time I need shoes. Only buy shoes and boots there after wearing them in store for an extended time to make sure you really like them and they are comfortable because you can NOT return them and get your money back even if you live out of state or even overseas. ONLY store credit. The cashier and store manager had an attitude and treated me like a beggar. It was humiliating and now I'm sitting on a store credit I can't use. $650 wasted on boots that ruined my feet because they were terribly heavy. I was told that there's a sign and it's on the receipt. Who reads that? After spending a fortune during my 25 years as a customer to be treated this way is a shame. I feel robbed. read more

I've lived in the neighborhood for over 40 years including a career that takes me all over the world, and nowhere have I encountered such rude customer service as I have in this store the several times I have attempted to shop here over the years. Either the salespeople are openly and unprofessionally arguing amongst themselves whilst competing for customers, or they are ignoring and/or barely acknowledging the customer in an abusive and patronizing manner. They seem to be unaware that there are far too many options not only in this grand city (and even online), but also in this great UWS neighborhood. Not only did Harry's have an incredible selection of Birkenstocks available, but Charlie was SO helpful and patient with our search. I can't recommend Harry's Shoes enough. The absence of other stars is due to the service received, as well as the general policy. TL;DR Be advised that they don't give returns (only store credit), despite what the website gives the impression of. Also, if you want quality service, I would advice dressing well (or perhaps bringing your grandfather). SERVICE When I came in, after about 5 minutes of browsing, I received a gruff "Help you?" from behind. I explained I was looking for a specific type of shoe (not brand or anything, just style and weather requirements) and the sole response was "humph". Puzzled, I just said I was going to look around. I eventually asked the gentleman to try on a couple of shoes, and after a terse "let's get your size" he went back to retrieve them. After bringing them out, he didn't say a word to me or even look at me; he just continued scanning the store. I found a pair I liked and said I was going to look for another pair. He told me "alright, it'll be at the front for you", and when I found another pair I received similar terse but minimally-perfunctory service. I thought it was just how he regarded customers, but while trying on the second pair, an older well-dressed gentleman asked he if could try something and the person who had barely uttered 10 words to me the entire time responded "I'm sorry sir, I'm with a customer right now, but I'll be able to help you in just a moment if that is alright." There was a marked difference in tone, and a deference / respect never shown when addressing me. After our engagement was complete, I continued watching to see if he handled this other customer differently, and sure enough I witnessed much greater warmth (a smile even!). Only at that point did I notice that every other customer in the store was over the age of 50, and I asked myself ... did I just experience ageism? I'm younger than what appears to be their standard clientele, and since I'd not experienced that before it was new to me. Or was it just because he dressed like he had more money than me, and was a "bigger fish to hook"? Either way, it was clear that I was a lower class of customer to them. This similar discrepancy in service later, but honestly the predatory policy choices are more prominent of an issue. I was perfectly content never visiting their store again until I tried to return a pair of a shoes ... that was enough to instigate a review! POLICY Unlike what is called out as their return policy on their website (or, as I learned later, their "online return policy"), the store does not offer actual refunds ... only store credit. I discovered this after reading their 3-paragraph return policy that is at their register. It shocks me in this day and age that a retailer can avoid giving returns without refunding the amount (because they will be able to resell that unused item), especially since none of it is explained at the time of purchase nor is available anywhere other than at the register at time of purchase. I consider this to be a predatory "gotcha", and frankly unacceptable in today's marketplace. I hope they enjoy the few hundred bucks they received from me, because it is the last they'll get. read more

I'm really somewhat surprised at the reviews. I had a really good experience at Harry's Shoes today. They have a big July sale going on. The shoes I searched all over for were not on sale, but they were the same price as all the other shoe stores. I purchased the last pair in my size. I lucked out! The main concern was the amount of sales people (when the store opened) that were sitting around looking lazy. Very unprofessional. One had the nerve to tell me "we're not open". That was right after someone else took the sign off the door. Enough of that. This is the tip. I walked right to the back where the shoes I wanted were displayed. There (also sitting) was a smiling, welcoming face. Her name is Iesia. She said next time to ask for her at the front desk. She works all day Thursday, 1-6:45 on Friday, and full days Saturday and Sunday. She took the time to get to know my shoe needs. She made many trips up and down the stairs to find shoes in my size. Then she went into the store window to get the handbag I wanted. Good deal. It was 50% off. I hope she makes a decent salary. She deserves it! I left happy. I have shopped at Harry's during my 38 years in Manhattan. I relocated and ordered a pair of shoes for $165.00. The shoes arrived with the wrong size. I was told that I was responsible for paying for the return shipment. In this day and age, no retailer ever charges for shipping. I paid close to $22 to ship back shoes that were the wrong size. I will never purchase another pair of shoes from Harry's and have already alerted friends who were going to place orders, no to. The only reason I gave them 1 star so I could post this. read more

I mean they were half the price at DSW for the exact same shoe So, apparently you can only return online shoes for a refund. Way to respect your store customers. When I need shoes I usually head over to tip top shoes but after looking online and hearing a couple of positive reviews from friends I headed over to Harry's shoes. Both stores are a hour travel each way for me due to the fact I live in queens ny. I arrived at the store and was surprised how big it was and how many shoes they had on display. I was looking at shoes when a salesman asked if I had any questions. I told him I needed shoes and after finding a few pair I liked I would let him know. I found 4 pair and brought them over to him and asked, before he went to get the shoes for me, could we please measure my feet. He did and he said you need a 10.5. That was funny because from my angle it looked like the foot measure said 11. The salesman was polite but not friendly but not rude either. So I handed him the 4 shoes I picked out and he said we are short on inventory so we don't have this, this or this. So now I was down to 1 shoe to choose from. So he brings that shoe in size 10.5 and another style that was similar to what I had picked out. I tried both on and they were too small. I said I think I need 11. So he didn't say anything he just went and this time he brought out 3 pair. He said since you need 11 I found another pair you can try on. That's when I realized up until that point he thought I was someone was just coming to see what size I needed and then I would order online ( it's a thing). So I told him after trying on all 3 pairs he brought okay I want to buy this pair but they feel too narrow do you have them in wide if so I'll take them. At that point he warmed up a bit and actually began to smile. He said let me go look and he found them in wide, I said great I'll take them. The moral of the story is salespeople deal with a lot of people and I'm sure not all of their customers are nice. So when going into a store to buy something remember, that salesperson may have already delt with some real winners so don't take it personal if it takes a while for them to warm up. In todays competitive retail and online environment Harry's shoes offers NO refunds. If shoes have not been worn, they will offer a store credit for only 10 days after purchase. They are competing with tiptop shoes, Nordstrom, and Zappos just to name a few All of those companies offer free refunds. Take your business elsewhere. I will never shop here again. read more

Hmm... wanted to like this store, really did. But after the old black cranky salesman treated us so poorly I don't know. Highlights: - When asking for another size, he'd just grunt and toss shoes in box. - came in wearing altra sneakers and he commented how they are apparently the worst shoes made, because they are too comfortable and people forget how other shoes are? - assumes I wasn't married and made a snide comment about how when you get married you'll have to wear dress shoes. I'm 37. - I tell him I like to be certain that I will be comfortable in shoes before I purchase. To which he replies if you choose that shoe you're trying on now, you will be comfortable. To which I reply, "No, if after trying a shoe on and I find it comfortable, it's the right shoe for me." He then goes on to argue that if I choose the shoe I'm trying on I'll be comfortable??? My experience is with the online store. I purchased shoes online, and they arrived quickly. However, inside the correct box were the wrong pair of shoes. I emailed the store, waited a few business days, and emailed them again, and finally got a prepaid return label to return them. I think the most frustrating part of my experience was being called/emailed about if I'd returned the shoes, when all that had to be done was check the tracking number or to check their mail - the shoes had already arrived back at their location. The correct shoes were then resent, and I was charged $7.99 shipping despite the item being a free shipped item when I purchased it. I inquired about this too, but never saw the refund reflected on my credit card statement. At this point, I'm too tired to care anymore. read more

Let me just say that as I browsed through their collection of shoes in the lowest of lighting, in the muggiest, warm and sauna like climate I overheard a woman tell her young daughter, "hurry up and pick something because they called our name and we came all the way here so we're not leaving here without buying something." I think this sums up why people are giving this place such high ratings. They feel compelled to buy something although the customer service is poor and the pricing is outrageous with the mark up (think stride rite shoes priced at $30 being sold for $55). I walked in to the store and immediately felt like I was walking into a zoo. Of course it was packed but the sales rep were yelling out people's names and a lot of scurrying and almost knocking customer's over was taking place. And when you heard an excuse me it was as if the sales reps were frustrated with having customers in the way. Accompanied my wife recently to Harry's. After trying to find the comfortable right size, the saleswoman returned with a pair that was presented as a size 9, when in fact she came back with the 81/2 originally tried on as too tight They seem to fit and my wife agreed to buy. At the cashiers it was revealed they were not the larger size and the saleswomen divulged she had stretch the shoes as there were no size nines. My wife bought them to her regret. A blister ensued and they can't be returned. Deceptive sale practice. Very DISAPPOINTED. read more

The staff are like vultures and can be rude. It appears to be a fairly universal experience there so why can't they hire kind people and train them to be cordial but give people space? It's an uncomfortable experience. The prices are quite high too though that is not unusual. read more

A stop at Harry's was mandatory on my Friday trip to NYC. A friend and I spent a delightful hour with David B. (daily hours, No Mondays). He "learned" our feet quickly and brought us dozens of pairs to try on. We left with four pairs of shoes and two pairs of socks between us. Our shoes were shipped free to NJ, no tax, and arrived the next day, much better than carrying them to the concert. I love the selection of top brands, not so much trendy as comfortable and practical. The expert service was appreciated and the friendly conversation was a bonus.
