Step back in time at Harshbargers! Ice cream shop meets home cooking in this retro looking restaurant! The service was a tad bit slower then you would expect, but that is okay sometimes! Good food takes time and when everything is made to order, that is what is expected! I got the Teriyaki Steak Tips....they were tasty and cooked perfect! My wife got the chicken mashed potato bowl, think of KFC famous bowl, but homemade. Hearty and comforting for sure! We shared fresh cut fries and every meal comes with housemade bread with a side of their onion butter (at least thats what it tasted like). I could've tried about 40 different things off this menu, come hungry, because they feed you and there is dessert after. They make their own ice cream, I got a delicious Chocolate Marshmallow Shake! We recently stopped by Harshbarger's Sub 'N Malt in Mifflintown Pennsylvania. This is a favorite stop of ours in Central Pennsylvania that has some of the best soft ice cream you'll find. On this trip, we decided to stop for lunch and had burgers and salads. The salads are fine; however, the burgers were nothing special. The meat was not flavorful. While they were on homemade rolls, the rolls were small and a bit too chewy. The fresh cut fries came out undercooked and we had to send them back for replacements. Aside from the soft ice cream for dessert lunch was underwhelming. The lunch gets a 5 out of 10. read more

We were a family group of 10 coming for dinner. They had an hour with no one in the parking lot. They agreed to seat us outside and promptly brought our sodas. The food took a while to come out for 10 people. But the lady who served us was unhappy that we were a large group and in her way. I understand we were a large group who ordered dinner and then ice cream. An establishment off of the beaten path that the locals love and it is obvious why. The food at this restaurant is top notch. Even though they did not have an iconic soda fountain they made up for it in their extensive desert experience. They had 20 everyday flavors as well as six seasonal flavors of ice cream as well as a plethora of Sundays, milk shakes and other frosty options. The service was top notch and provided numerous suggestions that positively impacted our experience. The sheer number of French fries in an order make sharing a necessity. The theme and ambiance of the restaurant draws the customer in and is built upon by the menu and overall atmosphere. Would like to give 3.5 stars but rounded up since this is a local place. Super cute interior well decorated in a bright and friendly manner; service was excellent. They have a diverse selection of desserts which on its own deserves 5 stars. However the burger buns would have been better had they been served hot and crisp; instead they were quite rubbery and detracted from the burgers. The burgers themselves were alright. A creative menu with some burgers containing onion rings and Mac and cheese. Would give only 3/5 for the burgers. Fries were so-so as well. The food and the server was good. But the "Host" Isaiah that was working today should have a job in the kitchen, not working with customers. His attitude was terrible. I asked for a table and chairs for 4 and he was getting a booth ready when I had to remind him about the table and he rolled his eyes at the request. Then I asked if we could have a specific server because we know her and he said no even though she was serving other tables right next to us. So lucky we found this place! Great food and service. We got an Italian sub and Stromboli. Both were fantastic! The restaurant was very busy on Sunday so we opted to sit outside on the patio instead of waiting to sit inside. The staff was great! Very accommodating. They have an ice cream stand outside. I went there for dinner with my family and I ordered the mashed potato bowl. The chicken had an odd taste to say the least but I didn't think too much of it untilI I went home and became very ill. Not sure if the chicken served with my mashed potato bowl was bad or maybe it was the lack of hairnets in the kitchen? Stopped by here on the way through the area to get a chocolate malt. I've had lunch in its sister store in McVeytown a few times and liked their hoagies and pizza. The place here was very clean and well kept. The ice cream parlor is seperate from the rest of the restaurant but connected. Very cute with a wide selection of ice cream. We just revisited this past Saturday, after about a year not visiting.. Most tables were full when we arrived at 5:49PM, were seated at 5:50PM, order taken at 6:00PM, meal arrived at 6:50PM. Bread, applesause and cole slaw was delivered after the meal at 6:55PM. What can i say? the food was ok. Fries arrived a few degrees above room temperature. I would presume they would be better if arrived hot and perhaps cooked a bit more. they had a soft texture and coupled with the temperature lost most appeal. We sat and ate in the rear of the restaurant amply lighted with sun pouring in from the many windows and a view of the attached golf range and highway. The entire restaurant smelled of old cooking grease. Each of the 10 or so tables in this back room had staining over all four sides and top inch or so of the tables. The same staining appeared on the fronts of the chairs. This staining could be scraped off with fingernail. (see uploaded photographs of crud). a simple weekly cleaning would be all thats necessary to prevent this from building up. Also, the floor appeared dirty. I understand that they were busy, but this detracts from the experience. By the time the food arrived, we ate, etc the kids were fussy and we had to forego the ice cream. It was a shame as the ice cream is apparently the draw to the place, Now I remember why we don't go there more often. read more

Stopped in here many times, this time we were heading back from penn state on our way back to Harrisburg area. This place is a must stop in if you enjoy a good 50s theme restaurant with memorabilia, a good burger, fresh bun with fresh cut fries, and a freshly made milkshake.
