I don't remember the exact number but I think they have 3 or 4 "pods" or rooms of dogs. It's massive how many dogs they deal with. To my understanding, Anderson county has an animal control that isn't open to the public but you can call them if you come across an animal for them to pickup. A lot of those animals wind up at PAWS because they are connected (I think paws is animal care and the counterpart to the animal control?). It's a little confusing/ not fully transparent how that works... I've gone to volunteer there before and they are really welcoming to people who want to help. Lots of dogs that need walking! And the volunteer trainer is really nice and open to new ideas. He's the one who came up with dog play groups. There's always tons of things that need to get done that volunteers can help with such as: - walking dogs (they have tons of pent up excitement and walking them helps them be more adoptable) - washing floors and kennels (it stinks sometimes in the shelter and that obviously deters adopters on stinky days) - helping with dog play groups - doing laundry (so much towels and blankets) - going through newspapers/ setting that up - filling Kong balls with peanut butter (this is like the highlight of the doggies' day) - grooming/ bathing animals if you have that experience (some stink) - fostering an animal - donating $ or supplies They also do what they can for enrichment of the dogs like peanut butter filled Kong balls and play groups under supervision. As for the cat program, it's minimal. They have one designated room for the cats and it's usually half full. They have a harder time getting their cats adopted out and so they have priced the adoption fee of cats at $0. Not a huge fan of that. I wish they had a cat room for the cats to stretch their legs. Like dogs, cats also get antsy from being pent up in a cage. My other impression is when I walk into the lobby, it's a little overwhelming with the front desk being packed with 3-5 staff members and some members of the public there. It's just kind of crowded. Most of the time, no one answers the phone despite having so many people there at the front desk. What surprises me is that there are sometimes 3-5 staff members standing at the front desk with nothing to do and they're just chit chatting. I don't think that many people are necessary unless it's a busy moment. Really, there are tons of things those staff could be doing and that many people standing there/ talking amongst themselves is just kind of unwelcoming for visitors. Also, the staff have no way of knowing why people are there; sometimes to volunteer/ help out, and sometimes to potentially adopt or need some sort of help. I really think volunteers should be wearing a colored lanyard or a volunteer apron or tee so staff know who the volunteers are and who are potential adopts. Also, the shelter does not have small animals. It's cats and dogs only. If cats and dogs are in need, I'm sure there are small animals within the community that could use their help too. I guess they can't do it all but I'd love to see them do intake for small animals as well. I've also come across homeless cats and so I know finding a shelter or rescue to take in a cat in Anderson is not easy. PAWS will not accept a cat from the public unless it's 2 months old exactly. Very strange. The cat situation in Anderson is unfortunate. Paws does have a TNR program though. If you have outdoor, neighborhood cats, you can trap them and bring to paws to get the cat fixed and ear tipped for free. This is really an important part of the organization because fixing animals does reduce the number of animals that wind up at shelter. TNR has been shown to reduce euthanasia rates at shelters so fixing saves lives! Also, if you have a pet that needs to be fixed, you can call Anderson Humane. Maybe one day, Anderson PAWS will do this themselves as well. I'd like to see some vaccine and microchip clinics at PAWS too. Overall, the facility is very nice and management is very forward-thinking. They are animal lovers and have even been in the news for training shelters throughout the south so other shelters can better take care of their animals. They are also in the process of building a massive dog park for the public and their shelter dogs. They're growing and improving everyday. There's room for improvement but as is they're a good program and very needed.

I cannot give you a surrender appointment today. OTW home I saw a man on the side of the road selling bicycles. I stopped & talked to him. He has grandchildren & 2 more cats at home. He accepted the kitten. It was a blessing from God. The kitten got a new daddy & a good home.

I went to this shelter today to see about adopting a cat or kitten. What I saw there was highly…read moredisappointing.. The cats and kittens all stay loose together in a trailer. I like the fact of the cats being able to run around and play, however most of the cats in this area have a cough, runny eyes, runny noses and two of them look to have ringworm. That was a big red flag for me because all of the "healthy" cats are running around together with the ones that obviously need medical help. I could not bring myself to adopt a cat or kitten because I do not want to adopt a cat, get attached to him and then him end up getting extremely sick because these people cannot get these cats seen by a vet or at lest separate the sick ones from the healthy ones. Right outside of the "cat trailer" there is a pen with little dogs in it. They were extremely hot, with NO WATER!! One of the dogs were licking the inside of a dry bowl and they all were panting and drooling really bad. It was really sad to see :( The lady behind the desk was extremely rude and would not get off of her cell phone to talk with potential adopters. She acted like I was disturbing her social media time, when she should be working and answering questions that the people have. I also told the lady that the outside little dogs needs water asap and the only thing she could say was "okay" and continue to stare at her phone. I will never be back here!! I will be going to the Georgia SPCA to adopt a kitty instead..

Long winded review ahead but a warning for people trying to use BarkBarkWag rescue. We tried to…read morecomment about our uncomfortable experience on the rescues post and Sheri the owner promptly deleted it and blocked us from the page so I'm warning people here. Note there is only one Bark Bark Wag Rescue but they have two yelp pages with different locations on them. I had the rug ripped out from me a second time on the same dog. I applied for her originally 7 weeks ago and was approved back in early February. When the rescue owner called to speak with me (hours after she said she would) she changed the requirements to the dog not being adopted out without a housemate to which she tried to get me to adopt two of her animals at once. I was not ready for this as we just lost our special needs dog 2 weeks prior and I felt forced to get two at once (one of which I didn't feel connected to). FFW to this week when I notice the dog pop up again after being in this woman's home for 5 months now. We had fallen in love with another dog (through a different rescue) that we've had now for 5 weeks. I've gotten to know him (he's learning and thriving!) and thought maybe he would like a friend. It has to be fate that she's still there right? I meet the new requirements of a playmate for her so I re-inquire. I'm approved again. I send videos of EVERY room of my home/basement/garage as the "virtual home visit" which Sheri now still has as an inventory of my possessions on her phone. Am told they do this instead of coming to your home because of COVID however they do still come to your house during their required multiple meet and greets. I set up an appointment for a meet and greet at her home where the dog is the very next day with us and our current dog. I'm told I'll receive an email within a couple hours with the information on the meet and greet. I patiently wait until the next morning when I have to ask again. The email is then sent but still no address, still no information on the process when we get there, just to text when I arrive. I finally get the address, time and text when we arrived as I was told, only to be greeted with hostility. This woman walked up to my vehicle and said she had no idea who I was. Remind you, she had a video of the front of my house with my vehicles in it. I had an appointment confirmed 3 hours prior (spoke with her on the phone at this time also) and I text when I arrived as instructed. She said she doesn't have her phone on her and she's not ready. I said that's ok we are a few minutes early and can wait. She says "are you ok?" "This isn't going to work is it?" I told her if this doesn't work it's not because of me and because I think she's trying to keep her. She proceeds to tell me I parked wrong in her driveway and expected me to leave my recently rescued dog unattended in my car for however long it took us to get acquainted with the new dog before we introduce them. I told her I wasn't comfortable making my dog sit here by himself scared and nervous that I may not come back. Suggested my boyfriend sit with our current dog while I meet her and then switch. She told me no that wouldn't work for her dog. It was too much in and out of the yard for her and had no regard for the safety and comfort level of both dogs. Needless to say, we never got to meet the dog even though we were physically at her house. All of this after about 2 hours of phone conversations where she belittled me and told me I had to change everything I do with my current dog to accommodate the new one. I was talked down to in a rude and condescending tone about inquiring about worms/fleas/ticks/parasites given they are a rescue that likely have new dogs coming in. She told me many times that she was flooded with applications but no one was the perfect fit. I realized after 5 months of being in her home this poor sweet dog is still not being properly socialized or worked with on her fears/leash/people. Every instinct in my body told me something is wrong with this woman and the situation, but I was committed to trying to save this baby from her basement where the foster dogs are not allowed to cohabitate with her personal dogs. Don't even get me started on the "contract" you're required to sign that she can continue to check in on the dog to make sure you're doing what she wants you to do and if you break any of her rules she's within her rights to sue you AT YOUR COST and take your dog away from you. My heart goes out to Celeste (and any other dog under this woman's thumb) that she's stuck in an unfavorable position and I'm sad I couldn't save her. This rescue owner may have given her a better home than she came from but emaciated and neglected was a low bar to begin with. Please be careful, do your research and listen to your gut! There are plenty of good rescues out there and this is not one of them.
