Being charged a fee for an exam after an exam was just completed 3 days prior at the same location ( Athens Area Humane Society) Is unethical. The only valid charge should be for the Bordetella vaccine. This is flat out gouging !! It's frustrating to see an organization that promotes compassion and care fail to extend those values to the people who support and rely on them. Receptionist was truly understanding and empathetic whereas the salt n pepper haired manager wavered her decision after asking "is it for the person standing there" . Don't patronize, use your Vet for $4 more . Yelp needs negative numbers for reviews- this would definitely be a -1 rating . read more

I adopted my cat from AAHS in 2009, and she has been such a wonderful addition to our little furry family! I would recommend AAHS to anyone looking for a new pet, whether it be a cat, dog or small animal. They really take the time to make sure you get paired with the right pet; they use the ASPCA's Meet Your Match Program to help with this pairing, plus the adoption counselors really know all the animals so well that they can steer you to the right animal for you! All adoptions include spay/neuter surgery, updated vaccines, a whole adoption packet to take home, collar, etc. plus lifetime advice and assistance from the staff. They have so many services available in addition to adoptions, too! They have monthly Pet Care Clinics with low cost vaccines, flea treatments, microchips and nail trims; their Spay & Neuter Center with low cost, high quality spays and neuters as well as other services at the time of surgery; and several other programs to help animals in our area. read more

I absolutely love volunteering at AAHS. They make it so easy by allowing volunteers to sign up online for the date/time/activity. They have many cats and kittens and some dogs and puppies too. There's a playrooms for the cats and a nice outside area where you can take the dogs and play. They sanitize all the toys after each use. I definitely recommend checking this place out if you're looking to adopt or looking to volunteer. Adoptions are 100-150$ for cats/kittens and 200-250$ for dogs/puppies. Rude and unorganized staff made volunteering a miserable experience. I'm sure they love the animals and have protocols for safety and hygiene, however, their lack of organization is evident and their attitudes are all very sour. read more

Start off by saying: Check the ratings/reviews on Google or Facebook for an EXCESS of INCREDIBLE reviews. Don't let the 3 reviews, (one being 1 star FIVE YEARS AGO) on Yelp deter you from using this facility. Great facility with fantastic, caring staff. Reasonable adoption rates including spay/neuter, microchip, and tons of Petsmart coupons. Helped me find the perfect dog for me and were very helpful in the adoption process. When the finalization of adoption was occurring, they made me aware of the cost, and even asked if that was alright (indicating they MAY offer discounts, payment plans, etc.) There's also usually a coupon for adoption/microchip in the Athens Flagpole, and other coupons on Groupon are available. This shelter does so much to help the animals in need in our community. The staff there is wonderful and will do anything they can to help. I would recommend to everybody to go there to adopt and support their cause. read more

OK, so I made a bad decision and decided to get a back alley spay done on my cats since the Spay Neuter Clinic was running a special in February. A friend reminded me that they do this daily and are probably pretty good. First the place stinks like a litter box, but OK so what. After I picked my girls up the next day after surgery I looked at the incision on their stomachs and there seemed to be an excessive amount of glue on both incision points and one of them even had a piece of paper stuck to her stomach with the glue about 3 inches from the incision. It seriously looked like a kindergartner had done the closing up of the site. My belief was that the glue is blue/green when applied but turns clear when exposed to air unless an excessive amount is used. I was a little angry but let it go. Skip ahead to a month later and while one cat has healed great the other, who had the paper stuck to her, hasn't. I noticed last week that a place had opened on her stomach but it wasn't the incision spot, it was higher up. When I tried to clean it I noticed there was a piece of suture sticking out about 1/4 inch. When I got her to the Dr. it was infected and the Dr. said he was going to cut off the piece of suture and all should be fine with antibiotics. When he grabbed the suture it started to slowly come out of her abdomen about 2 inches or so and guess what, the knot in the suture had surgical glue on it. I already knew but the Dr. confirmed that this is not suppose to be used internally at all. He then told me that it was amazing how many patients use the Spay Neuter Clinic then have to bring their pets into him to get things corrected and that he had a suspicion in the past that they used sutures as well as glue internally on the animals. I am furious with them at this point and DO NOT recommend anyone to use them if you care for your pet. Having said that I do like what their mission is and getting cats and dogs spayed and neutered is very important but don't do a hack job just because you don't' think anyone will find out. read more
