Are you a "dessert is a human right" kind of person who enjoys something sweet every night after dinner? Do you ceremoniously pair your evening coffee with a treat like it's a sacred ritual? Or are you more of a free range snacker who grazes on cookies and pastries whenever the mood strikes? At our place, we've somehow drifted into the habit of having a bakery item most nights. Could be a cookie. Could be a pastry. Could be a slice of something. All this brings me to yesterday's visit to the Hartford Baking Company in South Windsor, where we are now pretty well stocked for a week's worth of upcoming desserts, and maybe a breakfast or two. They have four locations in the Greater Hartford area, all selling the same amazing product line of bread, ciabatta, and rolls. But for the sweet tooth fiends out there, well get psyched for their scones, muffins, Walnut Coffee Cake, Financiers (a French almond cookie), brownies and bars, cookies, biscotti, shortbreads, Danish, Cinnamon buns, Pecan-Walnut Sticky Buns, Brioche Pastries, fruit tarts, and quiches. We were running errands in South Windsor yesterday, popped into Hartford Baking, and walked out with a bounty of wonderful looking goodies- brownies, a croissant, a chocolate banana muffin, a rectangular Financier, and a slice of coffee cake. We should be set for a while in the dessert department. I had the Financier last night, and never having heard of the word before, I consulted the old Google machine for some research and found a very cool origin-story. In the late 1800's there was a pastry shop located near the Paris Stock Exchange. The shop sold very popular small almond cakes that were baked in small rectangular molds resembling gold bars. They were a hit with the busy bankers who frequented his shop. The name "financier" stuck because of both the clientele and the gold bar shape. I have to tell ya, that Financier was amazing. It was dense and delicious and overflowing with almond flavor. I loved it. I also had a teense of the Banana Muffin this morning, and it was excellent as well. Loved that banana flavor and those chocolate chips. OK, so file away "Hartford Bakery" on your short list of "must visit" dessert destinations, because I assure you that you'll walk out a satisfied customer. read more

HBC in South Windsor is the cleanest and cutest location. It has so much indoor space to work and visit with friends and the drive through is an added plus! I've tried their breads, baked goods and coffee and everything was delicious (& fresh!). It's great that they offering ordering for catering/holidays too. Lots of parking available, the friendliest staff. Certainly will stop here again when I'm in the area! read more

Stopped by Hartford Baking Company and tried a mix of savory and sweet--definitely worth it! The Parm-Crusted Grilled Cheese had the perfect crispy, golden crust with an insane cheese pull. On the sweeter side, the Cinnamon Bun was soft, buttery, and had just the right balance of cinnamon and sweetness. These are only available on Fridays and Sundays. The Almond Chocolate Croissant was another highlight--flaky, rich, and packed with that delicious almond-chocolate combo. Only available Friday through Saturday. I also got the HBC Eggwich, which was a great grab-and-go breakfast. Everything was fresh, and the vibe inside was cozy. Service was quick and they even have a drive thru. read more

The brand new Hartford Baking Company has recently opened in South Windsor. Although I personally feel this part of town is more East Windsor, either way we aren't here for a geography lesson! This space is truly so lovely! They have an outdoor patio, but no one was here due to the heatwave. The inside is spacious and bright with plenty of seating options. One half has cozy couches, and other half has tables and chairs. If you're looking for bread, sandwiches, cookies, etc the selection at HBC is truly dreamy and very tasty. This time I decided to go for the Beet Salad and the Raspberry Matcha. This Beet Salad was very simple, but also very nutritious, colorful and fresh. There were roasted beets, spinach, onion and goat cheese. This was also a very generous portion. My Raspberry Matcha was very refreshing and sweet. I could for sure taste the raspberry, yet there was no bitterness. I had a pleasant time at the Hartford Baking Company, enjoying their tasty food and drink. read more

Just discovered this HBC in South Windsor. I've been to the West Hartford and Glastonbury HBCs so was happy to find one in SW. Went there for a quick lunch and ordered tuna salad sandwiches and the HBC Eggwich. Also ordered an ice latte and cappuccino. Everything was prepared quickly, service was great and there was plenty of comfortable seating there. My only minor complaint is that we would have liked to have the hot coffee in a mug since we were eating there. It looked like all orders were prepared to-go so they didn't have to do dishes. Their pretzel is fantastic and HUGE! Loved it! I never take pictures of my food, but I put it on the hood of my car just to take a picture of it cause it was so big couldn't believe it. It's about a 20 minute ride from my house and I would go there again to get another one. I don't think that they have any dipping sauce, like cheese or hot mustard but bring it home and make your own different sauce it's worth it. read more

Wow! I had zero expectations walking in as I have never been to one of their locations. Let me say it was so good! Service was pleasant and fast. Food / coffee was very good. I went with bacon , egg , and cheese on a hard roll. And Dubai chocolate latte. Both very tasty! Place is large inside. With outdoor seating available. We have been buying breads and other tasty treats from HBC since they were in one location near the Hartford/ West Hartford line almost 10 years ago. Visiting them from West Hartford to Glastonbury to their newest location in South Windsor the one common thing that makes it worth the trip is their delicious bread. What a delight! Spacious and comfortable. Seating inside and out. The latte was excellent. They have trays of samples of their dessert offerings and the chocolate cake and sour cream coffee cake are heavenly. You can take time and relax without a hassle to try to find a parking space, wait in a long line to order food and then have to wait and wait for it and then find a table in a noisy room or patio.
