I really enjoyed my first visit to Hartford Baking Co. I had been very anxious to try their new brunch menu, which I believe is exclusive to this location. Service was friendly and set the tone well from the beginning when I ordered. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I liked that there is a spacious second floor with plenty of seating in addition to the limited row of tables opposite the counter.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I ordered an iced banana bread latte to drink, which I found a bit plain. I didn't think the flavors came through very well and, while definitely not bad, it was a bit of a letdown. I would say "fine". The smoked salmon scramble with goat cheese was very good. It was full of salmon and the eggs were gently cooked which I appreciated. The toast that came with it was excellent, but definitely not the type said to come with the dish. I believe it was supposed to be 7 grain, and it was likely sourdough. So there were a few small things, primarily I think I should have just chosen a different latte, so that's on me. I would definitely go back. I was impressed with the variety of offerings on the new brunch menu, so I would explore one of those and either stop there or just try another drink. Tom, who I had met the day before, not only remembered me but was so hospitable. He sent me and my parents off with some pastries which were divine!! Please go eat here! The vibe is great, staff so hospitable and the food is excellent! The service here is out of this world! We went in just to look at the beautiful pastries and we got to talking with the staff behind the counter and next thing you know, we left with a free sourdough loaf! I have had bread from the West Hartford store only 3 times over the years, the latest was this Tuesday... a friend brought over a country sourdough to have with our lunch. Once again the bread had no taste/bland, the crumb was dry/stiff, slicing it & biting it was tough... worst was the bread was being sold as made that day, this past Tuesday. The bread arrived at my house about 11:30am but the crust was not in the least bit crispy as a fresh sourdough bread would have had the day it was made & part of the reason of getting a sourdough. This complaint is about 5'10 approx. 275 lbs no hair Jim who has been working at the Glastonbury location since September. I am writing it here for accountability. He purposely only hires females so he can have absolute power as a chauvinist. I told him that I just threw up in a public bathroom after having the tomato soup there and he was very dismissive towards me. I asked for a refund and he did not know how to find the transaction supposedly. He also sent the gift card to the wrong email on purpose. I had to beg the lady who remembered me coming in for a lemonade to help me feel better after throwing up four times the entire bowl of soup that I had there. Some fact finding would have gone a long way. It was incredibly gaslighting and rude to be told that I was the only one who ever complained which does not verify the dates on the food. The soup was insanely hot when I got it which is one of the ways food service people hide the quality of the offerings. The complaint is about ATTITUDE. It is about being dismissive of the suffering of others. It is about incompetence. Ironically I saw him with a regional? manager interviewing a guy who had closed his restaurant on some main st. somewhere. Hiring people to continue dysfunctional dynamics instead of CARING about well being of people and quality of food is a MAJOR issue. This location of The Hartford Baking Company is always busy. They make delicious breads, sandwiches, pastries, cookies and brownies. Yum! At work one time my coworker ordered us their sandwiches to be delivered, they arrived hot, with cheese and turkey and all the other goods. It was the highlight of my day! On my most recent trip to The Hartford Baking Company, I got something a bit different. I got their matcha latte! It was ready after a short wait, and I took it upstairs. You can also sit downstairs, but the seating is limited and it's typically taken. The space upstairs is spacious, and has plenty of light. The large windows give you a good view of the happenings below on Farmington Avenue. My matcha latte, needed a bit of sugar, to mellow out the bitterness. After that it was delicious with all of its green glory. It was thoroughly blended, as there wasn't any loose matcha at the bottom of my cup. I've had their capuccino before, it was a let down, the cup arrived with all foam and basically very, very little coffee. They use Giv coffee beans, for their coffee, so you know it's quality. I really wanted to like this place. It was located in a busy shopping center, so finding parking was a challenge and I wound up having to pay for parking which is fine. But you can imagine my disappointment when I got the feel from some of the employees that honestly looked like they didn't want to be there. I asked one girl for reccs between two breakfast sandwiches that I was eyeing and got told in a very short/rude response "i don't like eggs". She never even tried to follow it up with a separate recc or comment about other things on the menu that she does like. The other employee simply laughed and said "wow, you were so blunt" in response to that employee's response to my question. This was actually my first shop that I visited after getting into Connecticut and it left a poor taste as to how patrons are treated. I wasn't too fond of my breakfast sandwich (HBC EGGwhich) as it felt like it needed something to freshen up the meal like sliced tomatoes or lettuce or something. Probably could have just been a bad choice but you know I probably would have had more insight if the employee would have interacted more positively. It was my first time ever going to this HBC location (I know, right?) and Omgosh am I impressed. I specifically went today because today was the launch of this location's cocktail program, and I wanted to try their boozy brunch drinks! Remake all your future weekend plans, because HBC is where you need to go for boozy brunch. Today I tried a cold fashioned coffee and a cranberry spritzer (both aaaamaaazzinnggg) and they also offer a Bloody Mary & mimosa as options. What's even more awesome is you can get them dine in (with food) or to go, like I did. But wait. There's more. I also basically got one of each of alllll the pastries and a thing of bagels and am currently in total carb heaven. So get over to HBC for a cocktail and a brekkie bagel because you deserve it. It's a small space downstairs and looks like there is an upstairs which I did not explore. All their baked goods are on display at the counter. It all looked so good that it was hard to choose. I did finally decide on a crostada. There was no line for ordering, and a pretty short wait for the sandwich afterwards. The brioche bun was heavenly. The rest of the sandwich was a good concept but did not wow me. The potatoes in the sandwich tasted like it had been sitting for too long. The fresh fruit crostada was amazing! This is a nice, convenient, bakery shop, that also serves coffee right on the main downtown West Hartford strip. And seemingly gets pretty busy in the morning, like most bakeries are. One particular tip at this location is that on the right side of the end of the store, they usually have a small shelf with leftover bread from the previous day at discounted prices. Depending on what they have, This can be a fantastic deal as most one day old bread is still perfectly fine, especially if you go home and heat it up in the oven or air fryer. I have been able to try many fantastic breads here using this method such as sourdough miche. Otherwise, I would say, this bread is nothing to die for, but definitely a solid bakery, if you were in the area and are craving some specialty bread. read more

(Just walk one block up and pickup ur coffee from starbucks) The scones were stale and dry. It was in the morning so it could have only been one of two places...It was serendipity when I was able to find a parking spot right in front. I hesitantly walked in as I have a nut allergy and places like this are hit or miss. The staff was welcoming and so friendly! They gave me a few suggestions, after I ordered she walked over and told the kitchen to change their gloves. I was impressed that it was a 10 minute or so wait which means they were actually taking the time to make it. I ordered a breakfast burrito wrap with no beans/avocado. The eggs were freshly made, the cheese was stringy and the salsa was well distributed. It added the right texture and flavor to the wrap and wasn't mild but wasn't hot. I feel like I always have really high hopes for the Hartford Baking Co but have yet to be blown away. I've been a couple times and tried their California sandwich and buttermilk raisin scone and they're good quality but pretty standard. I wish their menu had more interesting flavors or offerings. I'd say they're a little on the pricier end as well. The California sandwich comes with avocado, sprouts, tomato, goat cheese, house-pickled vegetables and buttermilk dressing on grain bread. Their bread really is the star. So tasty and very hearty. The fillings were standard and didn't feel any different than if I had just made it at home. The scone, which they are supposed to be known for, are pretty good as well with a nice crumb but didn't stand out too much for me over other scones I've tried at other bakeries. I will say that the west Hartford location is a gorgeous place though. It's a two floor space where you can order downstairs and then eat on the second floor. They have big windows that let in a lot light. You could get some work done there but it does get pretty noisy, especially on the weekend. read more

They have cute upstairs seating, if you come alone it's a good place to get some work done or just people watch from the window seats. Some food items can be pretty pricey, they have all your typical millenial menu items like avocado toast, smoothie bowls, "steel cut" oatmeal. Usually there are people there doing work on laptops, there are some couches upstairs and tables that are good for that.
