This place, admittedly, is very near and dear to my heart. I have eaten here periodically for a few years, and it was a close comfort during some hard points of my life, so take this review with a hint of bias. I don't like shaming this place, however I feel like it is wrong to let people go here without a personal warning. Simply put, Hartz is a gamble. I love fried chicken and I've gone to many places all across the state, and this location, when it's a good day, is arguably the best chicken I've ever had. It is tender, (keep in mind, this is in the rare scenario it's edible) the seasoning is great, yet subtle, so it does not clash with any dip you may use, and the mash potatoes (while evidently made using instant ingredients) are delicious and a great texture. While that may seem like a small number of compliments, they are both so great they will absolutely take the show. When made right, the rolls are light and delicious. However, as said previously, this is not the standard. Most often you will arrive to this location and exit with bloody, raw meat, meat that's so slimy it can be comparable to fresh seafood, meat that's so dry and overcooked it could be sharpened into a primitive arrowhead, tendons unremoved that make the meat tough and stringy, rolls that are so decrepit I wonder if they've been left out on the floor overnight, and mashed potatoes either so scalding hot from being microwaved, or mashed potatoes that are so cold the instant gravy pebbles are still hardened. I have gotten sick from eating here once, and many times I simply feel ill from the amount of excess grease. It is very sad to see a place I love so much slowly decline in quality to the point I can no longer comfortably go here. I do not go inside, so I can not speak for the service, nor do I think that is even a reasonable metric to judge a place for. (the fast-food industry sucks, you're always going to get pissy workers, it isn't a testament to the restaurant) However, if the outside of the building is anything to judge, I can imagine the kitchens and interior aren't very clean. If you do not have extra money you're willing to spend at a different place if you are served bloody chicken here, then I would recommend you go somewhere else. Again, when it is good, it is amazing, but that is a one in five chance. And a side thing, completely of my own opinion, the new honey mustard sucks ass. read more

Came in to eat and the food was old looking and looked like the lady working behind the counter had her family there, as they walked out with all the food from the buffet. She apologized for there not being anything left and told us she would hurry up and make some more. Waited forever . Not the service I'm used to seeing here. The facility is dated but well maintained. Things declined badly during the COVID epidemic and the staff changed completely but has bounced back. The location is away from the Interstate so is not ideal for travelers unfamiliar with the town. I frequent the drive thru once a month while I am shopping in Huntsville. My Okra order was under cooked on one occasion but they replaced it for free on my next visit. Your order is prepared fresh while you wait. It is not taken off of the buffet table. That causes a bit longer wait time but insures you receive a fresh, hot order. The menu is traditional Chicken place stuff with Okra, mashed or French fried potatoes and Corn. Livers, Gizzards and Chicken strips are all available in the drive thru with even more on the buffet inside at your request. read more

Hartz officially has my heart! On a road trip from Houston to Dallas my tummy desperately wanted chicken nearest me. I settled for this drive through in search for a Popeyes that I couldn't find, and boy am I glad! I guess its primarily a sit down restaurant that has added a drive thru. Sort of like Grandy's did. The employee in the drive thru window was super nice too. At first glance of the menu, the prices seemed a bit high, but after a few bites of my chicken strips, it was all worth it. Seriously, such good chicken y'all!! I've tried their gizzards too, and they're the best I've tasted so far. I'll probably forever always be down for Hartz. read more

Negative 1 Went thru drive thru Tuesday night. Had to wait almost 30 minutes for order. They used to be very good. I must also mention that after eating the chicken when I got home family got very sick we were up most of the night sick. Won't go back there again. read more

I ordered a 21-piece family meal for my family and friends for a get together at the Huntsville location (3020 Texas 20 Huntsville TX 77340) and the food was ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE! I used to like Hartz Chicken but the food has gone downhill. I picked up dinner at this location about 4 weeks ago and the food and service was horrible then. I figured I would give them another chance. So this time, I asked for fresh chicken. What do I get? Stale chicken and hard rolls. Everything had to go in the trash! I went stopped for a kids meal. The food was not good. The rolls were hard and burnt, the lemonade tasted funny and the gravy had too much poultry seasoning. I likes Hartz but not this one. The food was good but not anymore. YUCK! read more

HORRIBLE service!!! Rude & disrespectful. Was there at 7:20 and the girl acted like it was a bother to wait on us. Quickly informed us that they were closing at 8:00 instead at the normal time of 8:30. "Told" us where to sit because she had already cleaned a section and she didn't want to have to clean again. Looked at the food and it was obvious it had been on the buffet since noon. Said she didn't know who her manager was. When the manager came up front, she lied about what she had done and said. The first time we ate here I was amazed that a buffet under 20 for 2 would even be edible. The second time reminded me why I am so skeptical of restaurants. There were a couple of people dining when we arrived yet the chicken side of the buffet had two choices old or empty. What aggravated me was the staff kept hanging out by the buffet talking but would not put fish out for the dine in customers. Yet they filled a bag full for this little ghetto hood rat that ordered buffet and said nothing to her when she had all of her personal crap laid on top of the extra buffet plates or when she walked behind the counter to get her own bag. Will not ever go back here it's sad that a few bad employees can ruin a business. read more

Great fried chicken, chicken tenders, chicken livers and fish fillets. I really love the chicken livers and fish. Their meats are not overly seasoned, just a good flavor of the chicken or fish. The tenders are just that TENDER and real chicken not some preformed something, my grandson loves them. Great rolls too. Cold slaw and mashed potatoes ok. Many other choices on the steam table including green beans, corn, greens, chicken and dumplings, peach cobbler, etc. but some are over cooked, that may depend on when they were put on the steam table. They also have baked chicken, gizzards, and I think wings. You can buy chicken by the piece or a set dinner amount, like a breast with two sides, etc. But the best value is to get the buffet. The price includes your unlimited drink, all the food you want to eat, and dessert. They refresh the chicken and fish frequently. Clean but a little noisy because the walls are all tile. Makes it easier to clean but I think makes the voices and normal noises a little louder. Employees are always friendly and helpful. If I'm hungry this is where I want to go. read more

Complete garbage. We were just there and ordered extra rolls, and none were given. So I pulled in and asked for the rolls I ordered and the black gentleman goes "who cares you didn't pay for them, wheres your receipt" I said "So you're being a POS because you messed up our order?" And he stepped up to me like he was about to swing. I told him that ordered them twice and he said I don't care you didn't pay for shit. I went off. This is the worst place possible. Will not drop money here ever again and I have already called corporate office and will follow up tomorrow. It takes a lot for me to go off and just start cussing but this guy treated me like crap and he knows he screwed up. read more
