Went today for the first time. I ordered brisket and ribs. The brisket was just a heap of pot roast looking meat. Not impressed. Ribs were tasty but very dry, like it was reheated or something. The restaurant has been here quite a while as I understand and it "used to be good" as I was told by locals. We decided to try it out and decide for ourselves! It is in an older strip mall but decor is dated but appropriate for a bbq place. You have to order at a step up counter and then seat yourself (as typical of bbq places) but it takes a bit of standing if folks are not sure what to order in front of you. I picked the bbq sandwich with moist brisket and onion rings. My wife chose the McKenzie Melt. It took a bit of time to get the sandwiches about 15 minutes but they have free pinto beans so I sampled them too! The beans were not bad, lacked any serious flavor but I'll rate them 6/10 . The sandwich was moist brisket as i requested but lacked smoke and seasoning. 4/10 The onion rings had very little breading (i presume they failed to dry off the onions before batter to get it to stick) and also lacked any serious flavor. 2/10. I really wanted to like this place but unfortunately the food just wasn't up to Goode Texas barbecue standards. The brisket was dry and bland. It's as if it was missing all the seasoning the bark on it wasn't very deep into the meat the sauce jalapeño sausage, although spicy and fairy flavorful was extremely dry. The Poboy, which is a combination of their brisket and sausage, chopped up, finally was dry. Ended up using a lot of the spicy barbecue in order to make the brisket and poor boy more palatable. The positive is that the staff are friendly and nice. The location has a great atmosphere although feels dated. It hasn't been updated and feels a little neglected. The men's bathroom is disappointing. There was a large puddle of water. Didn't know couldn't tell where is coming from. I'd pass on this location as I know that there's much better barbecue around the area. I love love love McKenzies's. They have been around Huntsville for as long as I can remember and they have always had the best BBQ hands down, but they also have really good burgers as well. I have always enjoyed the flavor of every menu item ordered, Sides include potatoe salad, beans, coleslaw and you get 2 sides with orders to go (mix or match). We LOVE McKenzie's not only for their fine food but also for the community spirit of their owners. Our friends we camp with and my wife love McKenzie's so we went. Thursday night special is 2 meat plate & 2 sides for cheap. My wife & I split it and got our own drinks. When you order lean brisket, it is actually lean-and delicious! Our other meat was smoked chicken breast which was tasty but a little dry. It's chicken breast. It is a dry meat. We both got corn on the Cobb and of course the free beans. Everything was great and service was, too. There are a few Yelp reviews lately that were one star hate because they do not require masks. I understand we are coming an hour and thirty before you guys close, but there is no need for 3 young girls to have such disrespect. We ordered a sandwich and we're sitting down waiting for our food when we noticed they started pulling all the condiments to put away for the night. When we went to ask (politely) if we could have some condiments for our sandwiches the girl strictly gave us unions and pickles and was very bothered with the fact we even had to ask. Great little BBQ joint in Huntsville. The brisket is lightly seasoned yet flavorful and manages to not be too fatty. It's good with and without sauce. The chicken is wonderfully seasoned but I preferred it with a bit of sauce as it was slightly drier than I prefer. I had to salt my beans - they serve basic pinto beans, nothing fancy or spicy. The potato salad is mustard based and the coleslaw is a very sweet style (not my preference). A BBQ plate includes basic white bread (AS GOD INTENDED), plus onions and dill pickles. I had a wonderful half and half (tea and lemonade) on the side and finished everything off with a scoop of homemade banana pudding. Prior to eating at any BBQ spot in Texas, there has always been a lot of hype around "Texas BBQ". That said, I was hoping that this particular place (Selected by a client) would live up to the hype! Upon walking in, you get that Southern/Country type of feel with their decor. There was a a pretty good crowd lined up, so I took that as a good sign. I ordered a Packaged Meal that had 4 ribs and 2 sides. I got the mac & cheese and potato salad as my sides. The ribs were good, but could have been a little juicier. They had good flavor, but were just lacking that super juicy experience that I was hoping for. The 2 sides were just okay, and nothing out of the ordinary. The best part of my meal was the Pecan Pie I grabbed for dessert. I don't typically eat dessert at lunch time, but it was recommended by the gal that took my order. They don't offer sit-down service, so you walk right up and order, and they call your number when your food is ready. Conclusion: Highly unlikely that you will ever travel to Huntsville - Texas, but if you do, it is a decent place for BBQ. Brisket and turkey for me on the 2-meat plate. Both were juicy and tender. Slight smoke flavor on the brisket, just not enough. Turkey definitely needed more smoke flavor though. Fried okra was good, just not great. The corn nuggets were really good. The jalapeño kick was quite nice. read more

Don't let the fact that I'm from Michigan discredit what I have to say about a Texas BBQ place. While in the area we visited both the Madisonville and Huntsville locations. Both were clean, welcoming, and the food was incredible. My group had most of the meats (Brisket, Pork, Sausage, Ham, and Ribs) and a lot of the sides (Potato salad, Coleslaw, Beans, and Mac&Cheese). Between our two visits, we also had a Burger, Po'Boy, and the Buffalo Ranch Chicken Sandwich. So... we ate a lot. Everything was good and went really well with the BBQ sauce. That said, I need to mention two items in particular. The first thing is something called a Corn Nugget. Never have I heard of it - but never will I forget it. It was like a hush-puppy, corn casserole , and a jalapeños popper decided to get together and form a beautiful union. After being dipped in ranch, it takes all you have not to close your eyes and forget where you were. The second thing to mention was the Chicken Sandwich. Over the past couple of years there has been a lot of time and effort spent trying to take home the title of the best Chicken Sandwich. I'm here to let you know that the title has been won. The Chicken Sandwich stayed crispy despite it being drenched in Buffalo sauce and ranch. How? I'm not sure - but I do know I've never had one better. I regret having to return to Michigan as it means that I can't return in the near future. I will return, though. You can count on that. read more

Meh! I ordered a pound of brisket and when I get there it's almost ready, so they get a star for quick service. Unfortunately the brisket was lousy. It was dry, and not warm, it was chewy, and not in a good smoked chewy way, more like jerky chewy way. Considering the amount of great brisket in this town, that is almost unforgivable. If that weren't bad enough, the sauce was bland compared to most of the great sauces around town. Lastly, and this is just a nit, but a whole pound of brisket doesn't come with a slice of white bread. What kind of self-respecting Texan would hand a customer a pound of smoked meat with BBQ sauce and give them no slice of bread. The fam and I ordered the Sampler Platter. We thought the food was great! I love how the beans are free and the bread is unli (although I don't really eat that much bread, hah). The location could've been more out there, but it's alright. We didn't really know about this place; we googled "nearest bbq place" and this place showed up, so we thought, "good enough." One star here is a struggle... of the two meals we purchased I would say the things that were ok included the macaroni & cheese and the free pinto beans. Otherwise, the ribs and potato salad were meh. The brisket and chicken were almost inedible. The brisket in particular was so dry I probably wouldn't serve it to my dog. But also it had absolutely no flavor or smoke ring that is traditionally seen in smoked brisket. The smoke ring less of a thing since I've had delicious brisket out of the oven, it tasted better than this for sure. BBQ is pretty good, made daily, fairly clean interior. These folks don't strike me as mask types during the COVID months. What irks the hell out of me is that there is no beer, but I think I know why. The owner seems to use this venue as a platform to push his teavangelical, salvation by intimidation "religious views" onto his customers. I will start by saying, please read entire review for my reasoning. I gave 5 starts for MANY reasons- The food is usually pretty good! The condiment bar with the beans, bbq sauces, pickles, onions are all help your self. I love that! Tea is fresh and excellent. I love the sauces.. couple to choose from. They hire locals to work- so that being said they are kids at times LEARNING how to work in service and regular folks working for a living. What you should also know is that Kevin McKenzie is a good man. More places should run business with his set of ethics. read more

I should have looked at the yelp reviews before stopping here - and guess what? Yelp was right as usual. Im picky about bbq. VERY picky. But I understand that you cant always eat at a top 10 on the Tx monthly list, and there is a place for "fast food bbq" when you want a decent lunch without a 4 hour line or $30 price tag. While this place technically fills that need, be warned... The vibe and atmosphere are what youd expect from a Tx bbq joint. It nails it there. But thats it. When I walked in the first red flag was they use another bbq joints sauce and seasoning (which is stacked on the counter for sale as well). I was never impressed with Bodacious bbq's products, and having eaten at the original Longview one, its assumed any use outside of there is going to be less impressive (and it was true here!) Trina took my order, a very specific one I make time and again at bbq joints across the country. Sliced beef sandwich, extra bark, potato salad and cole slaw for sides. I could order that in morse code if need be I recite it so much across Texas. My fault for not looking at the receipt immediately. But when i grabbed my order and sat down to dig in, i had a chopped beef sandwich. Right there on the receipt too. Oh well im hungry, waited in the lunch line once, so ill just eat it. Now I remember why i never order chopped. Tasted like day old cuts from the slices. Dry as the desert and hardly any flavor at all. Not surprised. The potato salad was perhaps the most bland Ive had in recent times. I cant actually describe it because it was literally flavorless. The cole slaw was SWIMMING in liquid. It was not particularly great, but not absolutely horrible either. I just couldnt get past how much liquid was on my plate. Spilling over the partition. It was slaw soup. Wow! There's Pork! Just down from Sam Houston State and not too far from the prison system (what isn't in Huntsville) is the quaint McKenzie's Bar-B-Que in a vintage shopping center on 11th. Just like you'd expect, it's a nice, large single room restaurant with raw wood paneled walls with the usual smattering of Texana with a Huntsville flavor. At lunch, it's full of the usual crowd of SHSU and TDCJ staff who all know a good place to get a good plate of barbecue. Having been married to a girl from East Tennessee & Georgia, I found the joys of great Southern Pork barbecue. Now, I weigh carefully the decision to order a nicely done pork chop or a beef rib eye. Beef is King in Texas, but many BBQ restaurants are seeing the light. I was still pleasantly surprised when I saw pork on the menu among all the standards. What came out was a nice portion of juicy, white meat with a pink smoke ring and delicious sweet & spicy crust. I easily rate it better than the pork that I've had at Goode's. I don't know if "eggs and Chevrolets" are cheaper in Huntsville, but lunches seem to be. Starting at a little over $7 you can get a single serving of meat plus two sides. The sides I had: Beans and Mac & Cheese were fine. Apparently I missed getting a really good potato salad (though I usually never order it). While I probably wouldn't do an hour and half drive just for McKenzie's, I would not hesitate to recommend it as your first stop the next time you visit the prison or the university. My Tip: Plan ahead for the some of the great dessert pies... I never do. read more

So I'm in Huntsville for the day and need a place to go to lunch. I check Yelp and see that this place has pretty good reviews and figure I'll give it a try. I had a burger, onion rings and sweet tea. With tax and tip I was still under $10. The burger was average, the onion rings were great. I noticed they have free beans next to the burger "fixin's". They were pretty good, especially for free. Be aware that you place your order, stake out a seat, then pick it up when your number is called. The food is served on disposable plates and you get your own napkins, drinks, plastic-ware. It's got a rustic/small town feel to it, but it seems quite fitting for Huntsville. That was the worst chicken fried chicken I have ever had. It was tasteless, over cooked and dry. I ended up dumping it and eating the Texas toast and corn. When we arrived, there was one employee wearing a mask. No one else behind the counter had on masks. One girl was busy refilling her soda, another busy cashiering and one girl was busy cleaning up ( sweeping). Why put a sign requiring masks if the employees don't wear them. And they handle our food. We were looking for lunch on a road trip, and spotted this place in a shopping center. I'm so glad we stopped. It was a great visit from beginning to end. The menu was what Texas barbecue is meant to be--meats and great sides. I arrived on the 2 meat platter special day, and I took advantage of it. Jalapeño sausage and ribs were my choice and they were excellent! The fried okra and the fresh cut fries were very good, and the beans were free if you ordered a meal. My wife had a great chicken sandwich, too. All this and drinks for a price just slightly more than we'd pay for a good sized fast food meal. If you are passing through Huntsville, look this place up. With current Texas Governor enacted FaceMask required in public, anywhere people gather and restrictions on how many people are allowed and social distancing regulations in lines, restaurant tables/chairs McKenzie's is very much NOT following rules-regulations! Couple in front of me in line asked cashier/order taker why no employees were wearing mask, why they were letting customers come in without mask and servicing them, why all tables and areas etc that should be closed or regulated were open? She stated their management said they do not need to wear facemask to work there, and that they were not enforcing anything on customers and you can sit anywhere you would like. They had no social distancing markings and spacing for lines, (like other cafes/burger joints/restaurants in town) A family of 6 came in behind me no mask, no social distancing from anyone and with a kid coughing! Family should be ashamed and management should have asked them to mask up till they got ready to eat or leave. Well they just lost my business! Having post cancer immune issues myself I will not spend my money and put my health at risk where employees will not follow bare minimum of the law! You know Governor is trying to help businesses keep their doors open but businesses like Mckenzies will force further change that will cause more Mom POP small business to close their doors forever if Governor calls for businesses to shut down to allow only delivery again! read more
