The restaurant has been here quite a while as I understand and it "used to be good" as I was told by locals. We decided to try it out and decide for ourselves! It is in an older strip mall but decor is dated but appropriate for a bbq place. You have to order at a step up counter and then seat yourself (as typical of bbq places) but it takes a bit of standing if folks are not sure what to order in front of you. I picked the bbq sandwich with moist brisket and onion rings. My wife chose the McKenzie Melt. It took a bit of time to get the sandwiches about 15 minutes but they have free pinto beans so I sampled them too! The beans were not bad, lacked any serious flavor but I'll rate them 6/10 . The sandwich was moist brisket as i requested but lacked smoke and seasoning. 4/10 The onion rings had very little breading (i presume they failed to dry off the onions before batter to get it to stick) and also lacked any serious flavor. 2/10. Overall a bit disappointing thus my 3 rating.

I really wanted to like this place but unfortunately the food just wasn't up to Goode Texas barbecue standards. The brisket was dry and bland. It's as if it was missing all the seasoning the bark on it wasn't very deep into the meat the sauce jalapeño sausage, although spicy and fairy flavorful was extremely dry. The Poboy, which is a combination of their brisket and sausage, chopped up, finally was dry. Ended up using a lot of the spicy barbecue in order to make the brisket and poor boy more palatable. The positive is that the staff are friendly and nice. The location has a great atmosphere although feels dated. It hasn't been updated and feels a little neglected. The men's bathroom is disappointing. There was a large puddle of water. Didn't know couldn't tell where is coming from. I'd pass on this location as I know that there's much better barbecue around the area. Note my rating system: 1 Star: I wouldn't recommend 2 Stars: Didn't hit my standards 3 Stars: Average (nothing special) 4 Stars: Above Average. Would recommend. Still looking for the 5 Star. 5 Stars: Top of their game. Great food. Great service. Would recommend and plan on returning.

Our friends we camp with and my wife love McKenzie's so we went. Thursday night special is 2 meat plate & 2 sides for cheap. My wife & I split it and got our own drinks. When you order lean brisket, it is actually lean-and delicious! Our other meat was smoked chicken breast which was tasty but a little dry. It's chicken breast. It is a dry meat. We both got corn on the Cobb and of course the free beans. Everything was great and service was, too. There are a few Yelp reviews lately that were one star hate because they do not require masks. Texas does not have a mask mandate. You are free to choose. If you don't like it, walk out & eat elsewhere, don't do a 1 star hit on a really good local business. Get it, Karen? Or Kerry?

a decent amount of food was not available, so I decided to get a burger, it was unseasoned and did not give me any ketchup, but I will admit the fries were very good and there FREE baked beans were also very good

Great little BBQ joint in Huntsville. The brisket is lightly seasoned yet flavorful and manages to not be too fatty. It's good with and without sauce. The chicken is wonderfully seasoned but I preferred it with a bit of sauce as it was slightly drier than I prefer. I had to salt my beans - they serve basic pinto beans, nothing fancy or spicy. The potato salad is mustard based and the coleslaw is a very sweet style (not my preference). A BBQ plate includes basic white bread (AS GOD INTENDED), plus onions and dill pickles. I had a wonderful half and half (tea and lemonade) on the side and finished everything off with a scoop of homemade banana pudding. The latter was a good thick vanilla pudding studded with water cookies and banana slices. Y.U.M. Definitely worth a stop when you're in the area!

Prior to eating at any BBQ spot in Texas, there has always been a lot of hype around "Texas BBQ". That said, I was hoping that this particular place (Selected by a client) would live up to the hype! Upon walking in, you get that Southern/Country type of feel with their decor. There was a a pretty good crowd lined up, so I took that as a good sign. I ordered a Packaged Meal that had 4 ribs and 2 sides. I got the mac & cheese and potato salad as my sides. The ribs were good, but could have been a little juicier. They had good flavor, but were just lacking that super juicy experience that I was hoping for. The 2 sides were just okay, and nothing out of the ordinary. The best part of my meal was the Pecan Pie I grabbed for dessert. I don't typically eat dessert at lunch time, but it was recommended by the gal that took my order. They don't offer sit-down service, so you walk right up and order, and they call your number when your food is ready. Conclusion: Highly unlikely that you will ever travel to Huntsville - Texas, but if you do, it is a decent place for BBQ. Just don't expect it to live up to the Texas BBQ hype that everyone talks about. "I MIGHT NOT BE BACK!"

Brisket and turkey for me on the 2-meat plate. Both were juicy and tender. Slight smoke flavor on the brisket, just not enough. Turkey definitely needed more smoke flavor though. Fried okra was good, just not great. The corn nuggets were really good. The jalapeño kick was quite nice.

They warm up the table with this amazing cornbread & hot rolls Today I had the fried catfish with fries and coleslaw. It was deliciously light & flaky but so filling I only ate 1 filet. The coleslaw was the best I've ever had! Ever! And I don't normally eat/like hush puppies but I always try and thumbs up; different from what I've tried in years past. My husband had the chicken fried steak with okra & mashed potatoes which I got a 'it was good' response which really means... he ate all of it with no complaints. Lol very rare to get a 'fantastic' or 'delicious' outta him. There are no booths, which is my preferred dining experience but we're not here for the comfort! The table was a little wobbly but I didn't care, I love staring at the pie shelf while dining! Nicely country style decorum. Great food delivered quickly with a smile! prices are inline with the quality/quantity! Thank you! Happy New Year!

The banana was all brown and the coconut time was so thick and not good at all. I will go back if I visited the town again

I LOVE College Town places to eat. While in Huntsville, TX,…read morehome of the Sam Houston State University Bearkats, my daughter suggested the Potato Shack for lunch. On first glance, this looks to be a converted Dairy Queen that has been subjected to a Frankenstein process of additions over the years. Walking in you are subjected to the ordering line that is merged with a full bar. This place, inside, is what I think a college hangout is supposed to look like. Lucky 19 Brewing signs run amok on the walls ... I later found out that it is also a hometown brewery that makes a really good IPA, but that is another tale. Sturdy tables and metal chairs await us after we order. My Wife and Daughter got the "Classic Potato" that has bacon, chives, cheese, butter and sour cream, with my daughter subbing the potato for tater tots. Either way it is served, there is plenty of starchiness to go around. My lunch was the Thursday Special - the Hotwing Potato. This is a average sized baker that is easy to break apart with a fork to stir in the chunks of fried chicken, melted cheddar and lots of hot wing sauce. I added ranch and sour cream to the mix for more of a flavor blend. Usually I try and take a before shot to show what it looks like before demolishing it with utensils as it drops into my piehole. However, I did manage a shot right after mixing. The chicken chunks were crispy and cooked through and through. Their buffalo sauce had enough kick to let my tongue know what it was without scorching my taste buds. I paired it with the Lucky 19 Texas IPA and it was a good flavor profile for my particular potato selection. Now, for the big reveal ... I would eat at this place regularly if I lived in Huntsville. Next time I am there, it will have a heavy weight consideration as a lunch place. I can only imagine how crowed it is when school is in session. Ciao, Darrell

Something house-made and with a custom flavor was expected. The "crispy chicken" is another store bought product that's chopped up and put on top. The mango-habanero sauce had a little kick, but was way too sweet for my preference. Overall, not a culinary hotbed, but a unique dining experience none-the-less.
