    Falafel pita
    Melissa C.

I learned of The Brooklyn Café through an article online, and I'm so happy I did! Today, I stopped there and had the best falafel pita ever! I didn't arrive until a couple of hours before they closed, so they were out of challah bread. I'm excited to go back for bagels, challah, and, of course, another falafel pita!

What a delight! Authentic Jewish style bagels right here on the seacoast! I got an everything bagel with egg salad, and my partner got double smoked lox on a poppy bagel. Both were delicious. They also had several delicious baked goods that we will come back for - potato knish, rugelach, and chocolate babka! There was a sign that says the café goes to support the community, which I thought was great.

    Cinnamon babka. Deeeelish!

The whitefish was lovely, and my bagel was the best GF bagel I can recall having had.

He was kind of overcast day but we can't wait to come back on a sunny day when the doors are open to the patio with a beautiful Riverview!. We had the breakfast special sandwich which was a fried egg with arugula, hot pepper jam, cheddar cheese, speck and an aioli. It was delicious. The croissant was light and buttery and we topped it off with a brown sugar oatmeal cookie to die for. She had an oatmeal latte with a shot of almond and I had a mocha. Both were delicious. It was topped off with wonderful service. Delightful barista and just felt welcome for our first time there. Highly recommend!

Once inside, you will find a spacious, airy, open, indoor/ outdoor American patisserie with a French flair. The back patio is on a deck surrounded by trees and is waterfront on the Cocheco River. You would never know you were in downtown Dover. The pastries are baked to perfection from scratch each morning. The croissants are light and melt-in-your-mouth. We also ordered the "house-cured salmon tartine", which was loaded with an explosion of great complimentary flavors. The coffee menu was extensive. This place went from quiet and intimate to a flurry of activity with friends meeting friends quickly after 8am opening. Service came with a genuine smile. I love this place!

I really wanted to like the Maine Market. And, in theory, I do. It's a comfortable space with…read morefriendly employees, and they carry LOADS of vegan options from other local purveyors in their take-away refrigerator (for example, I had a delicious wellness juice shot from a company I had never heard of before located in Southern Maine). Their menu is also so plant-based friendly! For example, they've got avocado toast with lemon, sunflower sprouts, pickled onions, and everything seasoning on thick cut sourdough that you can get with tofu or vegan sausage if you want. And there's sandwiches like The Caesar Wrap (tofu, chopped romaine, crispy garlic chickpeas, vegan parm, and vegan house caesar dressing) and The TLT (tofu, lettuce, tomato, vegan mayo, and avocado "for fun" [from their website]). But when I visited (which was around 10am on a weekday) every. single. thing. was. out. Vegan cheese? Out. Vegan sausage? Out. Avocado? Out. I asked what they could make me, and the option was a breakfast sandwich with a tofu egg (which they had only one of left somehow), spinach, tomato, and house pesto. I left with my sandwich to head back to Portland, took a big bite when I was on the highway, and immediately spit it out - the pesto was brown, rancid, and so bitter the sandwich was inedible. If I had been anywhere near the market, I would have turned around and said something because clearly the pesto was old and - it seems like - they really do care about their customer and product. I think I came on an off day, I really do. When I'm in the area next, I'll stop by and try again. And I encourage you to check them out and have your own experience, because I really don't think mine was their standard. Unfortunately... I was just left literally with a bad taste in my mouth.
