    Falafel pita
    Melissa C.

I learned of The Brooklyn Café through an article online, and I'm so happy I did! Today, I stopped there and had the best falafel pita ever! I didn't arrive until a couple of hours before they closed, so they were out of challah bread. I'm excited to go back for bagels, challah, and, of course, another falafel pita!

What a delight! Authentic Jewish style bagels right here on the seacoast! I got an everything bagel with egg salad, and my partner got double smoked lox on a poppy bagel. Both were delicious. They also had several delicious baked goods that we will come back for - potato knish, rugelach, and chocolate babka! There was a sign that says the café goes to support the community, which I thought was great.

    Cinnamon babka. Deeeelish!

The whitefish was lovely, and my bagel was the best GF bagel I can recall having had.

For a reasonable price, the sandwiches are massive and stuffed to the edge with the most fresh, cohesive ingredients around! For how quick it was made, the meal still seemed to be created with lots of care. I certainly recommend the turkey avocado (although i wish it had slightly more turkey)- the bread is crisp, the avocado creamy, the turkey tender, and everything else complimentary and super fresh! As for the vibes, both inside and outside, they were lovely! As I had my dog with me, I was able to enjoy the fresh sunshine and relax with a beautiful view (albeit the street gets a little busy). However, I would have also loved to sit in their quiet yet social interior which was filled with good smells and great energy! I'd also like to mention the amazing service! Their workers are super fast and helpful. I actually initially placed my order online to the wrong location, reordered at the new one, and submitted a refund request (despite it being against their policy bc you never know), and was met with a speedy response that was understanding and gave me an immediate refund, no questions asked! This experience brightened an already great trip to Portsmouth and an already delicious meal! I cant recommend this business enough if you want a satisfyingly delicious comfort meal in the heart of an adorable town! Definitely give it a try!

It's a comfortable space with…read morefriendly employees, and they carry LOADS of vegan options from other local purveyors in their take-away refrigerator (for example, I had a delicious wellness juice shot from a company I had never heard of before located in Southern Maine). Their menu is also so plant-based friendly! For example, they've got avocado toast with lemon, sunflower sprouts, pickled onions, and everything seasoning on thick cut sourdough that you can get with tofu or vegan sausage if you want. And there's sandwiches like The Caesar Wrap (tofu, chopped romaine, crispy garlic chickpeas, vegan parm, and vegan house caesar dressing) and The TLT (tofu, lettuce, tomato, vegan mayo, and avocado "for fun" [from their website]). But when I visited (which was around 10am on a weekday) every. single. thing. was. out. Vegan cheese? Out. Vegan sausage? Out. Avocado? Out. I asked what they could make me, and the option was a breakfast sandwich with a tofu egg (which they had only one of left somehow), spinach, tomato, and house pesto. I left with my sandwich to head back to Portland, took a big bite when I was on the highway, and immediately spit it out - the pesto was brown, rancid, and so bitter the sandwich was inedible. If I had been anywhere near the market, I would have turned around and said something because clearly the pesto was old and - it seems like - they really do care about their customer and product. I think I came on an off day, I really do. When I'm in the area next, I'll stop by and try again. And I encourage you to check them out and have your own experience, because I really don't think mine was their standard. Unfortunately... I was just left literally with a bad taste in my mouth.

While it can be crowded, turnover is quick save the wannabe poet or unemployed hipster nursing their cold coffee and typing on their Mac for 2 hours. We arrived at 9:30 and all bagels were sold out except rosemary. I had a schmear of scallion cream cheese and, in all honesty, it was excellent. The mocha latte was also superb. Some folks, especially from New York, will be shocked as to how stingy this place is with cream cheese, especially for the price. If you're on a budget, get a bunch of bagels and a side of schmear, and share. The patio area is huge and very welcoming to people and dogs too. Def recommend getting a side of swear as you'll get more bang for buck than having them put it in the bagel. They have a lil parking lot to the side, or there's 2 hr parking along the street.
