Coffee cake
Kristina I.

Before we left New York for our trip to Maine, we put a list together of all the bakeries that we wanted to visit. We stopped in on a Saturday after visiting a local farmers market. First let me just say WOW. Everything looked and smelled amazing. All of the fresh breads that we purchased were delicious. The coffee cake was easily the best I have ever had. We wanted to stop in on Sunday for more, but they were still on their off season schedule when we were there in early June.

You know it's going to be good when there is a line out the door! The smell coming from the basket leads you in the right direction as it's a little off the beaten path. Friendly customers friendly staff!

Almond croissant, cinnamon roll & lemon something muffin

Oh my God !!! The bakery opens at 7:00 AM. I arrived at 7:05 & the line was out the door. It took 40 minutes for me to be waited on as I stood out in the cold. Such nice people in line. 3 woman's saw me with my cane & offered for me to sit in my car & they would place my order for me, How sweet is that. I chose to keep standing but my knee tells me I should have taken them up on their offer. I was told the Chocolate peppermint cookies are a must buy so yes I picked up a package while waiting in line. My time finally has come I wanted an everything croissant & a seeded rye bread but both items were already sold out. I did buy an almond croissant, a cinnamon roll, & a lemon something muffin. All in all $41.00 later I was on my way back to our condo basically just across the street.

Great quiches and fresh breads, cookies and croissants. Coffee is ok but can be better. Except long lines every day. There are a few tables outside.

Another vacation in Maine, another breakfast at Boulangerie. We arrived shortly after 9AM on a Saturday morning and joined the line to order inside. Two different quiches were being offered that day and my wife and I chose the one featuring broccoli, scallion and cheddar. These were taken to one of the outside tables where we enjoyed them immensely.

After trying another "French" bakery in town and being disappointed, we visited Boulangerie, and thank god we did! THIS is an authentic bakery! The chocolate croissant was out of this world, and for a chocoholic like me, their brownie called to me right away. We would've taken the whole store home with us if we could've. The staff couldn't have been nicer, and we enjoyed sitting outside. I'll be sure to stop here any time I'm in Kennebunk!

Blueberry handpie

I have been going to Boulangeries for quite sometime now. They have a wide variety of bake goods that don't disappoint. The service was quick and attentive. I usually order a quiche, baguette, and scones to take home! Only downside is I wish they are able to warm up the sandwiches or quiches to enjoy. I will be returning.

Enjoyed all the items. Chocolate Croissant, Frosted Cinnamon Rolls, Blueberry Muffins and especially the Almond Croissant!

The staff was genuinely friendly, service was outstanding, and the food was fantastic! Hubby got the house hash omelet and enjoyed its spiciness, along with generous sides. I chose a pancake that was the size of a dinner plate and done just right--a bit crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. The only bummer is a few bites tasted of onions and vegetables...ugh! Next time we're in Wells we will *definitely* go back to Merriland Farm, but I'll get tea bread (a baked good) instead of pancakes in order to avoid the whole griddle flavor transfer situation, which is NOT a knock on this restaurant; it's meant to be a helpful note for others with ARFID and/or on the spectrum with food/sensory issues.

For our food, the meat pie was so flavorful and fresh. My mom loved her eggs Benedict, and we split a blueberry pancake which was delicious. The homemade whipped cream and real maple syrup really topped it off great. I NEED to try the blueberry French toast or crepes so we will be back!! My only complaint was how busy it was. We made a reservation and we weren't seated until around 20 minutes after that time slot. Not a big deal, but there's really no good place to stand and we constantly we were in the way of other guests/servers. Anyone trying to walk in quickly left after hearing it was a 1.5 hour wait for a table so reservations are a MUST. We came on a weekend in October. Additionally, the room we were seated in was only heated by one small heater so it was pretty chilly. But totally worth it for the food! Staff was also very attentive and friendly despite how busy it was.

She was full of recommendations (i.e. Goose Rocks Beach) and was friendly and kind without being overbearing. We showed up a bit late and the key was left in a coded lock box for us. The room was compact, but fine for my husband and I for our 2 night stay. We knew beforehand that breakfast would be boxed for us and that was fine. I was happy that they provided yogurt was Chobani and actually had some protein in it (unlike most continental breakfasts that are a carb party). We rented bikes and kayaks during our stay. It was great that they had these for us to utilize. The bikes should be covered during storage, however. They were a bit rusty. This was the priciest place that we stayed during our 7 night trip, but I wouldn't consider it the best. After our stay, I do feel that our stay should not have cost us so much.

This was a lovely B&B close to town. It was immaculate and very appealing. Our room was right on…read morethe bay and had a great deck with New England style comfy reclining seating. The room was beautiful and the bed and pillows were comfortable. The room was a little tight on space and the toilet is right next to the door so is a little awkward. Modern power plugs convenient to the bed were not in evidence. There was a sitting chair but no where to sit and eat or to work. The desk folks were very nice and helpful with local suggestions for eating and things to do. ***VERY not happy with the continental breakfast. You shouldn't list yourself as a B&B and have continental breakfast. Being a B&B implies hot breakfast... period!*** Not only that, there was hardly anything on it... there was only orange juice, coffee, and tea... no apple or any other kind of juice. There was yogurt and fruit but there was only one kind of cereal (Cheerios), only 2 kinds of bread... white and wheat... No pastries, muffins, bagels, croissants, rolls, English muffins, doughnuts, etc. To be fair, I think there was oatmeal and there was banana bread that was pretty good. The one good thing I can say about the breakfast is that it was available at 7:30am instead of 8:30 like some of the other B&Bs we stayed at on this trip. ***Almost all of the other reviews of this place had HOT breakfast on them so I guess we were just ripped off.*** I would love to give this place a great review and I would probably have come back if it weren't for the breakfast ripoff.

We started the evening with cocktails which were very much to our liking, followed by a delicious appetizer of lobster risotto that we shared. We both ordered the short ribs which were mouthwatering and cooked to perfection that the meat fell off the bone. The servings were enough where we took the bones and whatever meat was left to make a delicious beef soup. Neither one of us were up for dessert but decided to get two to go, which we downed once we got home. And they were both delicious. In closing, I'd be remiss without saying a good word about our server Keila. She was warm, friendly, funny, and very attentive to our table. She made our night to enjoyable! Thanks you Keila ! We look forward to our next visit to The Village Inn soon.

If you loved Village Tavern under the previous owners, you should know that the beloved restaurant you remember no longer exists. The name is the same. The esthetic is the same. Some menu items even have the same names. But the experience is not. During our visit, the calamari, salmon, duck, and haddock were all cooked properly, yet each dish was surprisingly bland and forgettable. Many longtime favorites, including the wide selection of side dishes like the broccoli with blue cheese, are gone. This isn't a bad restaurant on its own merits. The problem is that it's trading on the reputation of something that no longer exists. What I find most puzzling is that the new owners kept the Village Tavern name while abandoning so much of what made it successful. When a restaurant has earned decades of loyalty, you would expect new ownership to preserve its strengths. Instead, it feels like they discarded the very things that built its reputation. I left disappointed, but mostly sad. A restaurant I once considered one of the best in Southern Maine is now simply pedestrian and overly priced. Former fans should adjust their expectations accordingly or avoid the disappointment altogether.
