Small, old school, Diner feel. Service was quick and friendly, prices were reasonable and the food was piping hot with decent portion sizes.

Love those counter stools in green!

If you can get past the uninviting entrance and smudged windows on the door, you will discover a great little restaurant that well deserves their four (4) star review. My waitress was lovely and very accommodating. I don't remember if she had tattoos or not and I couldn't care less. She was Puerto Rican from Humboldt Park in Chicago as I'm familiar with the area too. We hit it off well, I was quite happy with my waitress. Harvey's is a long established business that goes back to the days when Hohman Ave on Hammond's Southside was a booming place. I hope little independent businesses like Harvey's helps rekindle and revitalize Downtown Hammond. Ahh the food! It was great! Ample portions, real ham off the bone, coffee refills and the privilege of dining in a vintage restaurant. Working class, multi-ethnic patrons, walk in and feel right at home. This is not a chain restaurant. Very pleased! Keep up the good work! Success! I'll be back! P.S. Clean up that entrance and you've earned a fifth star!

Very friendly. Lives by rule I will meet you where you are. Miss Mary is a kink soul in the restaurant buisness which in its self is very difficult. Food portions to price are right on! Great place to get togo as well. A real modern day Mom and Pop restaurant.

When you are in need of an awesome breakfast and a relaxing atmosphere, this is the place for you. Don't be afraid by the vintage ascetic the food is extremely good and will hit the spot. While waiting for your food to come up you will be able to take in the charm by playing the photo trivia, just ask your friendly server for the Q&A sheet. The tunes are supplied by a vintage stereo that is cranking out bangers at all times. Time will cease to exist while dining here.

Food and service was incredible! I ordered a hot coffee and hash browns to go along with a bacon burger and I can say it was incredible. The location of the restaurant may be offputting, since it appears to be in a bad neighborhood, and the location seems old and run down, but I can assure you the outside does not affect the food at all. A little teenage kid (I think he was the owners son) served me and he was very polite and had great manners. Constantly checking up on me to make sure everything was okay. Food was really good and service was top tier. Must come again location.

Ham and cheese club w/ fries. Yummy!

It was my first visit to Johnel's restaurant. It was packed in there because they had an inhouse generator that kept the place open for business. It was like Brookfield zoo in there, very crowded and it appears some the animals escaped captivity and came here for breakfast. My breakfast was adequate but nothing above and beyond. The ham was thin, with burned areas and not off the bone as I like it, but oh well. The coffee was bitter, I probably could have scrubbed and cleaned a frying pan with it. I was hungry, the price was right and I was satisfied. The service was good. My server was painfully pierced and tattooed and if the wind got a hold of her, she's look like a sheet of wallpaper flying down the street. There is no accounting for good taste in presentation these days. Johnel's wasn't bad but sure wasn't the best! All depends on how hungry or picky you are. Bon Appetite!

I would NEVER step foot in here ever again!…read more On my very first visit, I was seated in the narrow room to the left where there was a row of booths on both sides in this long dining room. The male manager seated me and there I sat and sat and sat. Yes, the room was full with waitresses going back and forth, NOT one said hello, we'll be right with you, acknowledging that I was alive. After 10 minutes, I grabbed a male manager and said nobody is waiting on me. He gave me a cup of coffee and he went straight back into the kitchen and spoke with a cook about getting me a server. After waiting another 15 minutes, while waitresses were all around me, yet not one stopped to find out what I wanted to eat. After looking at their tired, dirty and late menu for far too many times. I got up and went up to pay for my lone cup of coffee. A male employee minding the desk, ran up to the register as if I was going to skip out on paying for the $3.50 cup of coffee. I told him I was sitting here for over 25 minutes and nobody bothered to wait on me. We're very busy! Try that excuse on someone else, that's bullshit! A well trained waitress would greet you properly and say something to you, not ignore you. I was dressed properly. What he should have done for my inconvenience was comp me the cup of coffee! I wasn't looking for anything for free but a good business person would have comped the coffee. I would NEVER step foot in this place ever again!

Rain delay? Breakfast adventure…read more Our baseball tournament got delayed bright and early thanks to Mother Nature, so instead of sitting around waiting, we did what any reasonable group would do, we went looking for food. Of course, I pulled up Yelp (because Yelp never lets me down) and it led us right down the road to Sunrise Cafe. I'm actually mad at myself for forgetting to take pictures because everything looked so good that I skipped photographer mode and went straight into eating mode. There were seven of us, and we covered just about the whole menu, Denver omelets, French toast, over-easy and sunny-side-up eggs, chopped beef with eggs, and more. Not a single complaint at the table. Everything came out hot, fresh, and absolutely delicious. The staff was incredibly friendly, the atmosphere was welcoming, and it had that family-friendly hometown feel that makes you want to come back. If you find yourself in the area looking for breakfast, do yourself a favor and stop in. Rain delay or not, this place was a home run.

The menu covers breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner, with what you want when you want, freshly prepared. I ordered a Mexican omelette with jalapeños on the side, and it was bursting with flavor. Today she decided there was no way they would be able to mess up her order so we ordered from here again. And of course it was messed up. She gave up meat for lent and ordered fettuccine Alfredo and they added chicken even tho she specifically said no chicken. Then my omelette the cheese wasn't fully mixed into the eggs so 3/4 of the eggs had no cheese and then I had a clump of cheese at the end. And the worst was the salad it had a hair in it and bad cucumbers. I get it mistakes happen and stuff so we decided to ask for refunds for the salad and Alfredo since those were inedible and they said they can give us new food or store credit. Honestly I don't ever want to eat there again with that poor customer service to not issue a refund when they made the mistakes. That's just bad management.

I called right after I seen this and a different person on the phone answered & said I could still come in no issue as long as it's before 2:30pm. I told them what happened and they said the hostess did not know what I was talking about (trying to play it off) and claimed they only told me the business hours, not that I couldn't come in. Why would I lie about this? & if that was the case then why didn't she stop me from leaving? If I wanted the hours I would've called or looked on Google. But no, as I was going up the stairs the host had came to talk to me in the front entrance part of the restaurant before I could even enter the main door. Shame, I liked going here and as a table of 1 I would be pretty quick, about 30-40 mins in and out. Not sure why they didn't want to seat me vs the other group, and I probably wouldn't like to know the answer either. I typically tip more than half the price of my meal since the bill isn't much for one person, but I will take my money elsewhere then. For the owner, the host was the one on 04/12/2026 working at the time I stated above. They were a young female, with glasses, and medium cut hair. Not sure of their name.

Then a second employee came out out of nowhere and acknowledge the man after us who was in line behind doesn't ask him how many were in his party and he said one she took a menu immediately seated him and did not even acknowledge us nor ask us how many we were. At this point, I was already not happy however a third employee showed up and quickly seated us because the first employee told her to help us When we got seated, our waitress told us her name was Melissa although on the check it read as Jacquelyn Melissa was very nice and patient with us because we were not decided very quickly and this was our first visit. When everything arrived, and the portions are absolutely generous everything was piping hot, and there was no game of trying to find the meat in either of our orders The pancakes are big, slightly fluffy, and definitely not overly burdened with flower, which is great Coffee is OK could be stronger Glad that we got seated at a booth by the window I would definitely come back here again Eventually, while we were eating, I was facing that front area in that front desk area.
