I am so disappointed in our experience. We had come here five years ago and it was a 5 star experience. This time, it didn't come close. We walked in and the hostess was eating a piece of pizza, which I thought was funny. But now looking back, it definitely set the tone for the evening. Our waitress barely looked at us or talked to us. After ordering the wine, the gentlemen that came over was rushed, barely said two words, poured the wine and before we could ask for a decanter, had already filled the glass. It was not personable at all. They did not come around to refill our wine glasses all night. There was one gentlemen bringing food that was great, but most of the night our food was placed down in front of us without any explanation to what we were eating. Even if the food was spectacular, the front of the house experience was such that we wouldn't be back. Especially when dropping that kind of money. read more

I called Harwigs on a Wednesday and asked if it would be possible to get French onion soup if we came in for tapas, i was told yes, so we made the trip into town- when we got there the bartender was there with one other patron, I asked him if we could order the soup and he said no- I told him that I called earlier and they said they would make it for us- he shook his head and told us no. We came here on recommendation from a friend who has lived here for 20+ years. She said to sit in the bar area to eat food. Since we were starving we ordered 3 appetizers to share. All of the food was delicious! Escargot: It is in the shell and they give you the tongs to hold them and take out the meat. The sauce was nice and garlicky like it should be! Octopus: It was prepared very well. The different sauces on the bottom complimented it well as did the well seasoned and cooked shrimp that came on it! Really enjoyed it! Mushroom Risotto: The poached egg on top added a nice extra creamy and savory note. The sauce was perfect and not too salty. I really enjoyed it! (The one vegetable I do not like is peas, there were quite a few but it did not distract from the taste and my boyfriend who loves them really enjoyed it) Bread: Really tasty and they baked garlic cloves into it. Harwigs has longevity in Steamboat and the reason is clear, the food and the people who work there. The wine is an added bonus but is what brings many people through the door. We went with our two kids to celebrate my birthday. All of our food was excellent. The service was second to none, and they were beyond friendly with our children, which was so nice. Small menu, but every item was perfect. They also offered kid options that were off menu. Amazing wine selection. We had an exceptional dinner at Harwig's tonight. The oysters, lamb, veal, wagyu, and beet salad were phenomenal. We arrived early and had plenty of space in the dining room. Our waiter was very kind to our children, bringing several baskets of bread for them. I wish we had ordered dessert, but we so content after dinner that we just sipped our wine. Always start with a cocktail. Jack, the very distinguished bartender, not only makes wonderful craft cocktails but also has more knowledge about Steamboat than most locals would like admit. Keeping with the alcohol theme, Mike, the Sommelier, is as knowledgable as any Sommelier I have experienced in New York (e,g., the Modern) OH and YES he's friendly!!! BTW they have very reasonably priced wines, not the 100% mark-up you get from other proprietors. We have been fortunate enough to have dined here several times and have always had a great FOOD experience. Colorado Lamb is wonderful, not over seasoned, and perfectly prepared. Our chef's tasting dinner in the impressive wine cellar at Harwigs was the most memorable night of our trip to Steamboat. From the blue cheese martinis and Old Fashioneds that Chris expertly prepared to the extensive wine selection, the bar is top notch. Our meal was incredible and rivaled the finest of NYC restaurants. First time in Steamboat. Used their website to make reservations - they did not have our reservation! Also website showed menu specials - they had none - was told the main menu was it. Said they use many sites and postings, reservations, and menus are not correct all the time. You did not need reservations the place was empty except for the bar. Did not have the wine we picked out. We chose this restaurant based on upscale and unique - good wine selection - oysters - fresh seafood - steaks - and high star ratings. Someone was in there in cut offs and a tank top eating - we wanted a very chic romantic dinner. The filet was so so - more like top sirloin and we had to ask for bread. It was drab and dreary inside. Very long wait to get your meal. Definitely not 4.5 at best a 2. I am starting to wonder if the workers and/or owners keep submitting so that the rating goes up on these sites. All I can say - disappointing and very high priced. Be more diligent - there are some other fantastic 5 stars in Steamboat that are truly upscale appreciate your business. You really can't beat Harwigs, in any aspect of dining I can think of. For one, the chef has an amazing talent to blend traditional French with local flavors, and you can always count on something new and exciting based on the season. But that also doesn't take away from the staples that are always on the menu. Fresh oysters, east or west, the best French onion soup served perfectly, and a duck or steak entree that always gets me coming back. The staff is always a blast and willing to share a story, and the wine is obviously top notch, like a HUGE list. Also, take out Thai Food in addition to the main menu for Covid?!? Yep thank you! Back when we get to dine in again.. I love how you can choose the ambiance you are looking for. In the bar area, you have an updated timeless style but casually chatting with the bartenders and staff seems to be encouraged. And the dining room gives you a more prestigious feel for a fine dining experience. Couple hints, you can't beat the best Martini deal in town at Harwigs. Very conflicted on our review of Harwigs. Overall, it is a bit overpriced and under-value for the quality of the food vs. the price, however, the staff are sensational and their wine-list is outstanding. On the positive side, the place is quaint, nice atmosphere and wonderful staff (waitress, manager and sommelier were as friendly, helpful and inviting as possible). On the negative side, we tried many dishes which were overall rather average: Average: Lamb, Duck, Field Green Salad, Salmon Cucumber Salad Very Good: Lobster Bisque and Sticky Toffee Pudding The price is around $50 per person (appetizer and main) and for the price, the value is not there. I suggest they improve/upgrade their menu and keep the awesome staff they have. Likely would not return. read more

The lower priced ones must have been very carefully selected because they were ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING! I love love love good Bordeaux wines too! Lagostina gnocchi was embarrassingly licking the sauce up of the plate delicious. The fish I had was cooked to perfection - my dad's said his lamb chops were great. Heirloom tomato salad = must try. How do they even get such good tomatoes in Steamboat in the dead of winter? Actually, scratch that. Who cares? Just order them! Not a morsel of food or a drop of sauce left on our plates. Harwigs isn't inexpensive but well worth the money for a special dinner or if you are in the mood for some bomb ass French food! And if you are skiing on a vacation what's an extra hundo? After a day of being up on the mountain my boyfriend and I were looking for a place to have a nice relaxing dinner. We spotted Hargwig's L'Apogee and decided to give it a try. I really must say that we enjoyed every bit about this place. As we walked in we were warmly greeted by the maître d, who then had us seated promptly. After we were seated it was just outstanding service throughout. The maître d' came back around to check on us which was pleasantly unexpected. It seems like these days people forget the small details that are surely not overlooked here. The boyfriend was in the mood for mussels so we were happy to see they did have them on the menu. We ordered that as our fist course and it was perfection. The mussels were fresh and flavorful cooked in a tomato based broth. I was very content for his inclination of having mussels. These were wonderful, light, and fresh. I'd like to also mention that they have a pretty impressive wine menu. For our second course we had the Lamb and the Duck. They were both cooked perfectly. The lamb was cooked, as requested, medium rare. Every bite just was so packed with flavor and melted in your mouth. It was served with asparagus and risotto that were also no neglected. His Duck was cooked spot on. The breast was tender and juicy and the outside of it was crispy. I only had a bite of his but it was very well done. The salad/compote it sat on was also very fresh an combined perfectly with citrus reduction it was paired with. Finally we ended up ordering the bread pudding which was also fantastic. Not only did the food have an elegant presentation, but it's flavor matched the delivery equally. We enjoyed every bit from our wine to the service. read more

The staff are great but the GM is a complete jerk, I'm not usually a person that would yelp about a restaurant but the way the GM decided to talk to us was just completely unacceptable. The hostess Crystal was very accommodating and the server Aaron was actually fantastic as well. There is a right way and a wrong way to deliver a message, walking past and being aggressive, then avoiding me for the rest of the time was childish. His final attempt was to buy me dessert, which was quite offensive. I'm not here to fetch for free product or a meal, a simple sincere apology would have been fine. On September 25th I requested a reservation for October 15th via their website. This was for a special celebration. After two weeks I had not received a confirmation and began calling Harwigs. I left several messages asking about my reservation request but again did not receive any confirmation. I called again on October 12th to receive an answering machine message that the kitchen would be closed the month of October. Despite this their website still will accept reservation requests for the month of October. Now I am left at the last minute without reservations. Harwigs is a perfectly competent restaurant, but we were not lured in by the extensive (and impressive) wine list. Some obviously were around us, getting the 4x retail priced wines complete with decanters, and they were treated better than we were when it came to the wines, so be forewarned. The sommelier was off putting, probably because we ordered by the glass so we could pair whites and reds appropriately to our choices. The food was variable. The sweetbreads were absolutely excellent and the raw oysters delicious. The lamb sliders tasty but the brioche seemed day old. The beet/duck salad was ok, but more fruit than duck, although the combinations were excellent when we could find some duck to pair. The fettuccine with wild mushrooms, which we were counting on, was a little bland. We thought with the black truffle, hearts of palm and poached egg, it would have a more distinct flavor. We relied on appetizers and starters which seemed more interesting than the main menu, so maybe this isn't a completely fair review (the duck was tempting but too much food). However, the starters and appetizers portend the mains, so I wonder if they are consistent. We loved our waiter Chad, but the kitchen was slow as molasses and it wasn't a packed night. If you are from a foodie city (WashDC, so we are), you might be disappointed. read more

How does one find drinks better and less expensive in Steamboat than in Denver?!? Also had some oysters and they were delightful, would highly recommend. My husband and I have lived in Steamboat for 25 years and we've always considered Harwigs as a favorite. The escargot is amazing and their small plates are creative, delicious and beautiful. I could never complain about the food. We did have some very lackluster service at our last visit, our 30th anniversary, that we were very excited about. We waited at the host stand for 10 minutes before we were even asked if we wanted a table (we did run in to friends, but clearly were trying to get a table)... always an A+ on food. Visiting Steamboat we planned our dinners in advance. We understood that Harwig's was going to have a "set course" menu, but for the price we were disappointed. The escargot was cooked perfectly, but they lacked flavor. The shrimp ceviche had the most flavor and best presentation of all the dishes. The staff was friendly, but they did not seem to have any established processes or flow; service was slow. Obviously this is a locals favorite. Dinner night one in town. We originially did not have reservations coming into town because we thought we would be exhausted from traveling. In our airport transfer pamphlet we saw an appetizing ad for 8th street grill but after asking our concierge at the mountain resort as well as the shuttle driver, both suggested Harwigs if you are in the mood for a nice meal and want to pay a similar price. We booked a reservation at Harwigs for an early dinner and had a wonderful meal. I got the oysters which to my total surprise was served on a bed of sea salt instead of ice. That was my one criticism. The oysters only a little bit cold but I prefer my oysters over ice. As for appetizers: Get the french onion soup- wow was it fantastic. The antelope carpaccio was decent but not filling enough for an appetizer. The main courses were great. I got the chicken and my parents got the lamb. The lamb was perfectly tender and the chicken was seared oh so nicely to give it a nice crispy bite. I had the pleasure of speaking with the owner and the whole place felt very ski-town homey. My boyfriend and I first became aware of Harwigs in Mrs. Harjes's high school French class. She promised if we stuck with her for our French learning needs all four years of high school, she would reward us with a fancy, several-course dinner at L'Apogee, and we could supplement the bill with the change we were fined for speaking English in class. (Apparently this is a lie she tells all her students. I suspect she spends the money on dresses.) We were told to expect fancy waiters, a sommelier, and many, many courses of haute cuisine. The high point of fine dining. Flash forward ten years. Our reservation was for 7PM on a Friday night in the bar area. The hostess asked if we were really sure we wanted to sit out there. The first thing I was struck by was how loud and drunk the people AT the bar were. And there were so many of them, half not even on stools, just crowding around the bar. I got the impression this might be a good place to find cougars. The wine menu is a thick binder full of expensive bottles and lists of scotch. Overwhelmed, I chose a peach ginger cocktail. In the bottom of the glass was the ugliest, most shriveled and brown, turd of lime I had ever seen. Not a big deal, but not fancy either. The waitstaff was more subdued than I had expected, and not as helpful as I hoped. However, the service was fast, attentive, and pleasant. People were constantly bringing out more silverware to us. The food was delicious. We started with dates stuffed with Gorgonzola and wrapped in grilled prosciutto, and I recommend you do too. Salty, sweet and a tiny bit pungent, I could easily stop in again just for those. Then they brought us some bread with whipped butter salted with black salt. Pretty. We ordered escargot, a lamb slider, and gnocchi next. My boyfriend liked the gnocchi best, and it was a pretty good sized serving. The lamb slider was my favorite, not complicated, just tasty. The escargot was just how it should be. For our main course we shared the crispy duck and a side of bacon wrapped quail. The duck was wonderful, juicy and perfect. The quail stuffing was nicely paired with pumpkin puree. I was open to the espresso foam on the side, but in the end it was unnecessary and silly. We got two desserts and a cup of coffee to finish off the night. Don't waste your time trying the chocolate hazelnut cake; the toffee pudding is where it's at. We will return to Harwigs, and when we do I think we shall sit far away from the hustle and bustle of the bar. I will ask more questions and we will try a special. Great dining expedience. read more

We love this place. if you are in Steamboat and want to see where local folks eat, come on over. They have great lamb sliders - these are great. They also have lamb chops, a variety of cheeses, oysters and without a doubt one of the best WINE lists in the whole area. And they dont just have wines, they like wine so they take care of the choices that they keep and share. They have champagne by the glass - to go with the champagne powder :) Call ahead and find out if they are having one of their special wine nights. Sit at the Bar, ask them why the Name Deano is etched into the bar - and enjoy a restaurant that is certain to provide a great meal and terrific service. Jamie, the owner makes everyone feel as though they are a regular. They have a place to eat in the wine cellar and most nights we eat at the bar, because the conversation is lively and it reminds me of the Cheers Bar, except a lot more high end. We made a Saturday night reservation here based on the positive reviews. When we arrived, the hostess seemed surprised to see us, and more than a little confused/clueless. Once she realized we had actually made a reservation, she took us to the smallest table (or booth) tucked into a corner, close to another four-top. Service was a little slow, and I thought it was weird that they rationed bread out piece-by-piece but brought out a pot of salted butter (which was delicious) as if you were going to eat an entire loaf of bread. We each ordered cocktails which took forever to arrive, even though the place wasn't all that busy. The waitress stopped by several times after our drink order to check on us, but it wasn't until the fourth time (about 20 minutes later) that she actually took our orders - and then she only seemed interested in taking our appetizer and salad/soup orders. Thinking we should probably order our entrees too (rather than waiting until after we'd receive and finish the appetizer and soup), we stopped her from walking away and asked her to course out the appetizer, soup, and entrees accordingly. The food itself was okay, but lukewarm when it reached the table. They were out of the halibut, but served the same dish with grouper instead (my order). The steaks ordered seemed slightly overcooked and lacked the flavor you would expect in this environment and at this price point. What was frustrating was that the table next to us, a four-top, monopolized the servers' attention consistently, then had multiple visitors (including wait staff and management) stand by their table to chat for 5-15 minutes at a time. Normally I wouldn't mind this, but these visitors would stand between our tables with their backs to us, blocking us from getting up if needed, and the wait staff couldn't serve us because we were sandwiched into a corner with either people or walls on all sides.
