I haven't been to Southern Thailand, but I have spent enough time in Malaysia and Singapore to judge roti canai/prata, and the roti and curry here is really excellent. You can watch them frying the roti in front of you, they have a great flavor (they're a bit on the thick side), and the curry is absolutely sublime, with an incredible depth of spices without being hot. I also really enjoyed the freshness and textural blend of the "rice salad," with great cucumbers and herbs, although it was too spicy for my dining companions. I admit I didn't think the fried chicken was anything special--the chicken was moist (even the white meat), but the outside could have been crunchier. But I'm not the biggest expert in fried chicken, nor in pad thai, and both were certainly competent even if not as exceptional. Sticky rice was also cooked perfectly. read more

My meat-loving friends adore this place, so this review is solely for vegetarian food. 3 stars for veggie food, 4 stars on Yelp because I'm not interested in damaging a star rating, just sharing info for vegetarians. There is only one vegetarian item on the menu, the veggie curry. It's sort of an afterthought, throwing a bone for the vegetarians in the group. (Could they not make a vegetarian version of the Southern pad thai, just to be a pal?) The curry sauce is tasty, but the veggies were completely undercooked. Raw, tough, spongy pieces of underdone eggplant. It was like the person cooking it did not know what to do with a vegetable. The roti is tasty (I'm not familiar enough with Southern Thai to critique it). But if there's just one veggie item on the menu, and it's just vegetables in a curry sauce, I feel a restaurant should take pride in getting it right. Seating is a little tight, but somehow that adds to the atmosphere as you end up sharing a table with strangers, which is fun. Fried Chicken Roti Combo - holy fried chicken crispy, combo comes with 1x leg and 1x thigh cut into two pieces. Curry was delicious and balance, excellent when dipped with the crispy roti or fried chicken. Pickled veggies were a great pairing and sweet and sour added another dimension. 2. Pad Thai - glistening noodles served inside an egg omelet. Very solid pad thai - sweet, sour, salty. Don't forget to add the fresh shrimp, these were cooked perfectly and plump. I recommend the restaurant should take the shrimp tail shell off for us. 3. Thai Basil Lemonade - solid lemonade, NEED more basil flavor. Stopped for lunch recently. We were looking for BBQ chicken wings but the place down the street no longer served them. We walked down and ordered. Popped into Hat Yai this evening for the first time and very glad we did. The food was delicious and vibe was bustling. I'll start by saying this place is definitely not big so come with the expectation that you might have to wait for a table. There's only about 8-10 tables in the place and it's definitely geared towards smaller groups. Regardless we ordered at the front and then were able to find a seat. Wound up ordering the combo to try and get a taste of everything. The portions were solid and everything was super tasty. The chicken is perfectly breaded and delicious. It's a bit of a messy meal so just come with that in mind. Have a bunch of different options that also looked tasty. Will have to come back and try again. Service was fine. They were kind and cleared the table. Water is self serve at front of the restaurant and they clearly do a fair amount of takeout. Cool local spot to definitely check out. read more

I wasn't sure what to expect when my friends suggested Hat Yai for a meet-up, but I have to say I was impressed. I got the muu hong, which is pork belly and a fried egg over rice. It was very simple but done well. The pork had a strong cinnamon flavor, which was tasty and helped bring everything together. I will say that wished the pork was a little less dry, but it was still tasty and filling. I also got a hibiscus lime slushy, which was bright and refreshing. The slushy had more hibiscus flavor and wasn't too sweet. I think it was a good drink to pair with everything due to the lighter flavor. My friend got the Hat Yai Pineapple daiquiri, which she really enjoyed. I think that it was a bit on the sweeter side, and the pineapple came through well. Then the Hat Yai for 2 had a good portion size. The chicken was moist with a crispy outside. It paired well with the sticky rice, curry, and roti. Honestly, I think the seasoning on all the food was really good, and I appreciate the cinnamon flavor, which is something I'm not used to, but it adds a nice warmth to the dish. The staff were attentive when we were ordering and very friendly. The overall aesthetic of the restaurant was very cute. It's a bit small, but there is also outdoor seating for a nicer day. We waited maybe 30 minutes for a table, gave us time to walk around, grab some water, order. We found parking around the corner pretty easily. We decided on the fried chicken set, southern pad thai, and mango sticky rice between the three of us. Wow, that chicken was perfectly crispy. The flavors were on-point. The curry was delicious, the roti perfectly held everything together. I didn't eat the rice, but my fellow diners enjoyed the texture and taste. The Southern Pad Thai was good as well. My friend decided to sparsely mix in the peppers so as to accomodate all spice tolerances. I wound up mixing more in, not the whole thing, mind you. Would recommend slowly mixing it in. It's even better than their other location -- just facts. The sets are cool but I prefer larger meals to have leftovers because this place is just too good to not want a redo. Came here for dinner on a Saturday night and was blown away by the dishes. We got the hat yai to share as well as a veggie curry and pad Thai. I didn't get a picture of the pad Thai but it's the best past Thai I've ever had it was saucy and wrapped in an omelette. One of my favorite places in Oregon for Thai food! The fried chicken here it's definitely one of the best Thai fried chicken I've had. The sauce that it was coated in was just the right amount of saltines with hens of garlic and definitely some fish sauce umami. Definitely cannot pass up on this if you're here. There are seating space indoor and outdoor and what makes it really nice is the outdoor seating has a full station for utensils and condiments. This lady who served our food doesn't seem too happy working there. She literally threw our food on the table and walked away. Curry sauce is a bit sweet and coconuty. The smoke duck curry was delicious. It was spicy and smoky. They can't adjust the spice level as it was a pre-made curry sauce. oh my I love hat yai!! Starting off with parking, it was definitely a bit tricky on a saturday afternoon around 12:30 pm. I had to go around a couple times to snag a spot but I won't let that bring down my rating. Upon walking in, you place your order, take a number and find a seat. I took my food to-go, however, I only had to wait around 5 minutes for my order so I was pleasantly surprised! Onto the food, the star of the show! I ordered the fried chicken set which comes with fried chicken leg quarter, roti & the curry. I also got a thai iced tea. Took me about a 20 minute drive home, but the chicken was still crunchy! Roti was absolutely delicious and I regret not buying an additional one. I dipped all 3 together and it was so so good! definitely wish there was a little spice though. I don't get the hype tbh. I'd been looking forward to trying Hat Yai for a while now and I went here with my wife recently. We ordered the Hat Yai for two. The chicken was okay, but nothing to write home about. The coriander seeds added a nice aroma and crunch, but the chicken itself wasn't very flavorful. The sticky rice felt like it had been sitting under a lamp for way too long and the entire outer layer was just dry and crunchy. The rotis were decent and the curry was just mae ploy massaman curry. My photo I took only captures some of the food it came with - comes with two sticky rices, two curries, whole chicken and their sauce, 4 roti's and pickled onions, jalapeños. When we came here it was really busy, might be a bit understaffed. The staff told us it'd probably take an hour for them to get their orders and after we ordered they said we were the last ones. We waited 40 mins before the food arrived. The sticky rice was good, nice coconut flavor. The curry and roti are my favorite. Roti could have been more flaky like I've had from them before. The fried chicken was good, nice and flavorful no need for sauce honestly. This was enough to feed 4 people if not that hungry, if you are I suggest ordering another dish. I tried Hat Yao- I had the braided Pork belly over rice with a fried egg- so yummy. I also got some oxtail soup for later.I am such a wimp when it comes to hot/spicy food- the oxtail soup is super spicy. I ate the oxtail but O could not drink the broth. I enjoyed my food - the spot is super tiny and make note that they close for an hour so the staff can have a break and eat much. We shoes up at 1:45 pm and they closed at 2. Despite their really nice notice in the door people kept coming in and they just kept receiving people. Ima looking forward to having their fried chicken and some of their other dishes.
