Grabbed a Lyft from the airport straight to Hat Yai. Arrived around 4:30, so it wasn't crowded, although a handful of tables did fill up while I was there. Also, a bunch of to go orders being fulfilled. I went with the leg quarter with roti, and got a southern pad Thai to go. The fried chicken was juicy with a nice crunch and I loved the sauce. The sticky rice was ok. The roti was delicious. I would get the curry next time too. The southern pad Thai was a very good sized portion and was tasty. Large chunks of pork rind and the mango make it different from most pad Thai's I've had, but I enjoyed it! read more

Stopped by on a Thursday evening around 7pm. Indoor tables were packed, with two large picnic tables available outside. We opted to wait ~15 min for an indoor table to open up. Order at the front with the cashier, and they will bring your food to your desired table. Each dish we ordered perfectly balanced the other in terms of sweet/sour/savory/richness. Should note each curry comes with a BIG bowl of jasmine rice, which seems excessive at first, but is much needed, as the curry pack a decent punch of sodium. We sampled a large variety of dishes from their menu as follows: ~ Ox tail ~ Soy cured short rib ~ 1 leg quarter fried chicken - this was alright, not sure if it's because we didn't order it with the curry, but ~ Brisket curry - large chunks of brisket, ~ Special curry of the day (fish in a spicy curry) - very tasty! Fish was in an airy batter, and very crispy, doused in a spicy curry ~ Sautéed cauli w egg - pretty good, especially for the vegetarian pals, but not sure we'd order again given the other options NA Drinks: Horchata Hibiscus slushie - beautiful drink topped with a flower Only mistake was not getting the curry/roti along with the fried chicken, but I think we did fairly well. Recommend coming with a group, or just order a bunch of items so the flavors can balance each other out. read more

Great food! Casual ambiance! Quick and attentive service! The Thai pork was yummy and spicy! The combo plate was delicious and the go-to item on the menu and I see why. Wow. All I can say is wow. I had a great experience here. Service was good, the vibe was nice, and the food was really delicious. I got the 1. Fried chicken leg quarter curry and roti set. The roti was super amazing and the curry was really good. The fried chicken was pretty delicious too. The dtom som shrimp blew me away though!! The broth was so rich and flavorful! Pro-tip: You'll have to park in neighborhoods and walk to the restaurant. They are closed from 3 to 4 for a break. Highlights: I love their fried chicken - super crispy and juicy inside. The roti is really flakey and chewy and the flavor of the curry is great as well. They have a egg wrapped pad thai, which is rare to come by. I will definitely come back to try more dishes! Lowlights: Some of the flavors were a little bit off for me. The lemongrass oxtail soup was way too sour and I couldn't have more than a spoon. The egg wrapped pad thai was too salty for me as I prefer a sweeter pad thai. read more

I'm pretty sure I've been to the other location but this one is great too. If you enjoy chicken, this is your place. It's seasoned deliciously and get the curry with it. It's great to dip the chicken in. This place can get busy though and thankfully I managed to snag a spot but expect long wait times. Also, know what to get beforehand because you order at the desk and there is almost a guarantee there will be a long line behind you, pressuring you to be quick haha. But anyways, the food is great and it's simply very much worth visiting. If you're a fan of Thai food, this is your place but with a bunch of chicken variations. Definitely a Portland staple. read more

Every time i get Thai in portland it never misses and hat yai definitely continues that tradition!! A friend and i came in to eat here after i just landed from a flight and it was Soo yummy. The place is the type that you order/pay up front and find a table with your number. We got the Thai teas (delicious!) and shared the Hat Yai for 2 (fried chicken, sticky rice, curry and roti) and the southern pad Thai. Both of them were incredible, but the curry and roti are the stars of the show. That creamy sweet and spicy curry was just to die for. The whole meal cost us $50 which was fair for what we got, and the staff was so friendly, as people in portland always are! We were lucky to get a table though, shortly after we arrived the line got long and the wait went up. Cannot wait to go back to portland and eat here again! read more

I was recommended to eat Hat Yai a couple of times so my wife and I finally pulled the trigger this past weekend. In short, the food was good! To quote my wife, their flavors are excellent. We ordered the "Hat Yai for 2" and I was pleasantly surprised. The curry is delicious (rich in flavor), the fried chicken is crispy (the shallots and sauce that comes with it compliment the chicken so well), and the roti is a great addition for dipping the curry. The sticky rice is oddly a bit dry for my liking but you can sub for jasmine rice (something I'd recommend doing, but that's just me). And, of course, they serve Coca-Cola (huge win!). We'll definitely be back! read more

Oh my word!! Ever since I discovered egg-wrapped pad Thai in Bangkok at Thipsamai, I've been looking for it ever since. And it's not easy to find in the States. I was randomly scrolling through Portland food posts when I saw it... egg-wrapped pad thai. It was my pick for date night, so obviously, I chose Hat Yai. Now, I never order pad Thai in the US. It's not my favorite dish to begin with, but it's always waaaaay ketchup-y here. But this was turmeric based and egg-wrapped!! I had to try it. It did not disappoint!! It was absolutely delicious; it did not taste like ketchup at all. It was amazing. I want to try everything on the menu, but I would totally get this every single time. It's that amazing! We also tried their steak skewers, roti, chicken wings and pork belly with a fried egg dish. All good stuff. read more

I was craving fried chicken and Hat Yai totally filled it. I don't think I've ever had fried chicken with the flavors that Hat Yai has--I am speechless on how to describe it. Just go try it out for yourself and tell me if you've had it anywhere else. We ordered the Hat Yai for two which was half a chicken, sticky rice, 2 roti's and curry. We ended up adding 2 additional wings for $3 each since we were starving. This ended up being the right amount of food for my husband and I. The roti too was amazing. It was soft and flakey which made it perfect for dipping in the curry. I encourage anyone who wants fried chicken with a twist to try out Hat Yai for a unique experience. read more

I used to love this place, but the last two times I've been there, I have been really disappointed in both the service and the food. I reported it to the restaurant and the owner said he'd get back to me and never did. The first time they apparently forgot about my partner's order and I had to remind them. Then the "special" was just lame. This last time, I got my dish way before my friend and the portion size has been reduced about half. The wait staff seemed like they were doing us a favor by waiting on us. Won't be back. read more

4.5 stars but rounding up solely because of the fried chicken! Yum yum. The deep fried chicken is fire! Definitely get the combo with the roti and curry as it gives a nice infusion of flavors. My friend and I got the combo #5 - Hat Yai combo which has fried chicken leg quarter + extra wing + sticky rice + Malayu-style curry + roti, as well as a Hat Yai specialty - Muu Hong which is a braised pork belly and shoulder with fried egg. The chicken is marinated well with crispy garlic, and you can also dip into the curry for even more flavor, for the chicken meat that is deeper in without much spices. The roti is layered so it soaks up the curry pretty well. The sticky rice similarly also has a great texture and soaks up the curry to pair with the chicken. The braised pork belly is pretty solid, though I would have liked the meat to be more tender with the amount of fat the pork belly has. The egg was perfectly runny which enhanced the dish. Overall, the food here is excellent! While there is a slight miss with the pork belly dish, the fried chicken dish exceeds my expectations. read more

Food that will touch your soul. My girlfriend came across this place because of her love for fried chicken. She came with high expectations, and walked out that door on cloud 9 (I was jealous). But we both loved this place! The curry that comes with that combo is heaven sent, from creamy to rich and gentle flavors. I wish I would've ordered a bigger bowl. The chicken did not disappoint either. Perfectly fried, spices were on point, and the actual chicken was juicy. Explored a little and dipped a chicken drum in the curry and it took my taste buds to a different planet. This was a second round when we loved it so much the day before. We made sure to come here before leaving the last day. I went to both locations this one and the other one. This location is smaller, cozy & intimate spot. They have 2 picnic benches outside for the nice weather. . This place has amazing southern thai fried chicken, with roti & curry iand sticky rice combo nspired by southern thai cuisine. This spot is like a must try spot!! It's like you haven't been to Portland oregon if you haven't been here. . There are lots of street parking available which is quite easy. You walk in and order & pay at counter. We walked in after lunch time on monday and there was no wait. I highly recommend getting one of their combos where you can try multiple things! . I got 2 hat yai combo ($20) to share between 4 people, each combo came with a fried chicken leg quarter, wing, sticky, rice, malaysian-style curry & roti (flat bread). it was all sooo good (+ a lot of food for a good price), I was in tears of joy as I'm eating this combo. . * roti: hand made tortilla/crepe, its thin and crispy. dip it in the curry & I was wow! The curry sauce is like crack and you just can't stop eating it. * fried chicken : crispy. flavorful, juicy for fried chicken.and there are fried onion bits which is so good. * curry: spicy, sweet, is so good with the rice and chicken as a dip! . Drove down from Seattle with some friends and made sure to stop at Hat Yai. We got the Hat Yai combo for 2 which comes with the fried chicken and curry with roti, as well as an order of southern thai ground pork and pad thai. Everything was so delicious and very unique as I have never had Southern thai food. The fried chicken was definitely the highlight for me and an absolute MUST if you're going to eat here. The house curry was pretty standard, but it paired incredibly well with the roti. Now for the pad thai and southern thai ground pork... First of all, I have never had anything like it as it tastes almost nothing like any pad thai i've had before, but it was still pretty good. It wasn't my favorite part of the meal but i'm still glad I tried it. The southern thai ground pork was good but it is SO SPICY. I have a pretty high spice tolerance but wow this was no joke. Even just a small bite of it will make your whole mouth burn. If you can't handle spicy DO NOT GET THIS or at least ask for it without spice. I almost felt like it was difficult to enjoy this dish because of the spice, but I know that others who can handle it better than me enjoyed it more. Overall, it's a delicious restaurant and worth trying especially if you haven't had southern thai food before. read more

We went in October of 2023 and the fried chicken is to die for! I got pad thai with extra peanuts and my boyfriend got something else that I don't remember and we devoured ALL of it. We also got some rice to soak up the rest of the juice and such because by golly! I wish there were more stars because this place would have ALL of them! read more

This is by far the worst Thai restaurant I've ever been to. I honestly have no idea how it has such high ratings. The place wasn't even busy, yet the server never checked on us--not even once. The chicken dish I ordered was undercooked, with reddish-pink meat and visible blood, and the rice was dry and tasted like it had been sitting out since yesterday. I'm never coming back. I come from out of town and my uncle insisted on us coming here! They said it's their favorite restaurant and it didn't disappoint! My Ratings: Food: 9/10 Service: 4/10 We got the 4 person combo that comes with sticky rice, curry, an entire chicken, and roti. I typically prefer my chicken spicy but the crunch and flavor was so delicious. Make sure to dip the roti and rice in the curry. It's an amazing combination of flavors and came out to less than 12 dollars a person. My one complaint would be they bring things out separately. We had to wait another 30 minutes for the chicken to come out, where at that point we were almost done eating the curry and rice. Neither the staff nor menu stated there was an expected wait. They were also very unfriendly when we asked about it. read more

Not really thai food at all. If you want thai, dont come here, it's just mid over sauced and under salted stuff. I think their only good thing on the menu is the chicken. So come here if you like chicken but was not impressed by it one bit. Nice staff and everything but bad experience. I dont belive its 4+ stars at all theres much better read more

Fried chicken was crispy but a tad salty . Ground pork had lemon grass and spice, tasted different than average ground pork . It's casual and self service ish . It's in a not so fancy part of town . Lineup and parking was okay on a weekday . Food is not as good as Thailand but it's different and better than typical restaurant. I don't think I'm gonna miss it or recommend it . Loved this food. Finger food heaven. Take a piece of roti bread, rip some chicken and a ball of sticky rice, fold it up, and dip in the curry. Amazing. You get half a chicken (breast, thigh, wing, and drum) for the hot yai for 2 and 2 rotti breads and curry dipping sauce. Fairly priced at just over 30 bucks for 2 people. Inside the place is a bit small. They have a nice outside covered area where we sat and ate. I also tried the green brisket curry, but no photo of that, i was not a fan of the green curry flavor. Its a very unique, overwhelming taste of green herbs, finished with a ton of spice. read more

Fried Rice Specieal (w Chinese sausage): good shrimp/fish sauce flavor, all the strong flavors (like birds eye chili and cilantro) come on the side so you can easily mix in or omit. 8/10 Braised Chicken Thigh in Curry with Roti and Pickled Veg: So incredibly comforting, simple yet amazing depth of flavor (warm spices, chicken was falling off the bone). I love hat yai so much. I recommend it to anyone visiting Portland! It's real deal comfort food. The prices are a little steep give then serving size, but it's worth every penny. The chicken is friend perfectly and is full of flavor and is moist. The curry? TO DIE FOR. So full of umami, I'm obsessed with it! The Titi is also amazing, slightly crunch and soft at the same time. The curry is perfect for dunking the chicken or roti in. The beef curry is also really great, a little light on the meat for the price, but small business + inflation, it's understandable. The curry is slightly spicy and the meat is so tender. It comes with a nice helping of rice on the side as well. You have to find street parking for this; it is also order at the counter and self seating :) also yes, they sell alcohol :) read more

We ended up seating outside on the patio at a table for four with an extra chair. The inside of the restaurant can get pretty loud, so if you're looking for a more quiet dining experience, I would certainly recommend requesting a table outdoors. Between the five of us, we ordered a large order of their BBQ fried rice, a large order of their sweet and sour fried chicken, white curry with brisket burnt ends, and wok fried yu choy. This ended up being plenty of food and we even had leftovers to take home as well. If you need any recommendations from the menu, your server will be more than happy to provide options. Of the dishes we ordered, the one I enjoyed the most was the sweet and sour fried chicken. The boneless chicken thighs were incredibly juicy and the exterior was craggly, crispy, crunchy and well-seasoned. Like good fried chicken, the dish did not taste oily at all. The other dish I really enjoyed was the brisket fried rice. You really can taste the "wok hei" in this dish. There's a smokey, charred flavor in every bite and they're really generous with how much brisket is used in the dish as well. The only critique I had food-wise is I thought the burnt ends in the white curry were a bit dry and a little tough. The cut of brisket was too lean so it didn't have the melt in your mouth texture you typically associate with slow cooked BBQ. That said, my experience as a whole at Eem was otherwise incredible. Service was fantastic, cocktails were creative and well-balanced, and pricing was well in line with expectations. Definitely would stop by again for a meal.

The whole place was loud, and so alive with happy people stuffing their faces. The only downside is that they don't take reservations, so waits can stretch to an hour. We got lucky and scored two seats at the bar and only waited about 15 minutes on a very busy Saturday evening. There's free street parking all around, but keep in mind the neighborhood is popular and busy. You might circle a bit before snagging a spot. Indoor and outdoor seating is available.
