Nice spot for a quick lunch in the area. Order at the counter, find a table, and they'll bus for you. Overall, the food was good but I seemed to nitpick one element of each item in the meal. Hat Yai for 2 (portion was perfect for two people, with a little bit leftover): - Roti was a little on the dense/doughy side, I would've preferred it to be more flaky and light. - The house curry was extremely rich and concentrated, a smidge too intense for me but very flavorful for dipping. - Though the fried chicken doesn't have that heavily breaded crust I'm used to, it was juicy and crispy. My gripe was that there was way too much white pepper used - every bite seemed to have a peppercorn crusted on the top. - Sticky rice was fine but slightly dry.

Hat Yai is a spectacular place to visit with a group - servings are medium sized, so sharing as many different menu items as possible is a real treat. The spice levels are, for me, pretty much perfect. There's lots of flavor without anything being painful. It's not a huge space, so their order-at-the-counter arrangement works beautifully for cutting down the amount of time spent sitting at tables with nothing to do. They have self-serve water and to-go container stations, so this is a very efficient operation. After multiple visits, I'm happy to report that I have not yet found any one favorite item on the menu - this is one of the rare places where everything I've tried has been spot on.

Came with a party of 5 adults and 1 kid. We ordered a Hat Yai (fried chicken set) for 4 (with an extra roti), a regular fried chicken set, and a pad Thai. Ambiance: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Food was quick Food: 5/5 Everything was absolutely delicious. The roti went perfect with the curry. The cucumber salad that came with the chicken was refreshing and the chicken was deliciously seasoned! The pad Thai was also great. If I ever travel back in town, I will definitely swing by again

Just driving through downtown Portland and randomly found this little gem when trying to find a quick bite. For a late Sunday afternoon. Found the place packed with a younger crowd. I shortly found out why as the food was good but the prices were even better. We were able to feed all four of us for just over $60. We reached order something different but I do have yo say hr fried chicken was the best.

I love fried chicken. All types of chicken fried all types of ways. Hat Yai has great fried chicken. The combo comes with a great curry and some crunchy roti too. That's really all I need to know about comfort food A casual place, like chicken spots should be

I visited Hat Yai Restaurant based on a friend's recommendation and ordered Southern Pad Thai, Brisket Curry, and Thai iced coffee online for pickup. There's no dedicated parking, only street parking around the restaurant. I was lucky to find a spot this time. According to Google search, the restaurant showed a break between 3-4 PM, so I rushed to arrive before 3. However, I later checked the official website and found different business hours, so I'd recommend confirming directly on their website before going. The food was decent overall--the brisket curry was flavorful. I'd give this place 4 stars.

Loved this neighborhood spot!! we were in need of something yummy, fast & casual. this hit the spot but exceeded in flavor The ambiance is cozy and cute, and the service was incredibly fast! you order up at the counter and then seat yourself at available spots. On a Saturday night around 6 we were able to snag a seat in the indoor area! My personal favorite was the house curry. It was flavorful and rich. perfect for dipping in your roti and your chicken! Also I recommend the southern pad thai. It was delicious and flavorful. To me, it had a deeper richer flavor than the usual pad thai i get and i loved trying it.

After hearing a lot about Hat Yai, we finally made it in and it was definitely worth the hype. We went on a busy Friday night and despite being packed we were able to order and get seated very quickly. The cucumber salad was crisp and fresh but still packed with flavor. The chicken was crispy and piping hot. The curry had nice flavor and the roti was a nice accompaniment.

My first stop in Portland! And it definitely set the bar high. I ordered the curry roti set with chicken all of which was amazing and went so well together. The pickled veggies added an extra punch and the dipping sauce just sealed the deal. I also ordered some Chinese broccoli to get some greens in. Service was super easy and the outdoor picnic tables were lovely.

Hat Yai is amazing! It is usually difficult finding gluten free food, especially asian, that is good on its own right, not just because it's gluten free. This is a quick and casual spot for comfort food. Will definitely be back!

I went a couple days ago with a small group and had a decent experience. We went for dinner around 7pm on a Friday and it was pretty busy, luckily we got a table inside. Service did take a little bit to give us our food after we sat down, but not too crazy of a wait. I got the southern pad Thai and didn't like it to be entirely honest. It tasted weirdly tangy and the chicharones tasted stale. My friend got the Phuket noodles and also didn't love them. I got a ranch water and it was pretty good. Overall: mid Thai place in Portland, good location but there's better food out there for sure.

I wish I took better photos to do this place justice!! Honestly, my favorite meal of my entire Portland trip. The service was fast, the restaurant was clean and spacious. The food was insanely delicious. We got the pork with rice and the set with a half fried chicken, curry, and roti. The pork belly had a familiar and comforting flavor that paired so well with the white rice. The curry was rich yet simple and was the perfect dip for the flakey roti. The fried chicken was definitely the star of the show, with whole spicing coating the outside. It was crisp and flavorful without being too heavy. The pickles and sauces that were provided were all a hit. I wish we had a Hat Yai in SoCal!!

y friend and I shared the Hat Yai Combo for Two, and it was excellent. The Thai-style fried chicken was crispy, juicy, and well-seasoned with garlic and spices. The roti with curry sauce was buttery and flaky, perfect for dipping -- easily the highlight of the meal. Portions were generous, service was friendly, and the food came out quickly. Hat Yai is a great spot for comforting, flavorful Thai fried chicken done right.

With delivery and tip, our total was about $79...which seems steep, but realistically their "sliders" are about the size of a standard Popeyes chicken sandwich with a HUGE piece of chicken. We got 4 sandwiches, fries, mac and cheese and the five piece mozzarella "slabs" (they're not sticks lol), plus I ordered a large ranch and Dave's sauce (like a better version of Chic-Fil-A sauce) and a small hot honey and Reaper ranch...so price pretty standard for the amount of food. The food traveled well and these were literally the best chicken sandwiches we've had. Chicken was juicy and crispy and a dry season that was insanely good. Slaw was crunchy and pickles were tangy. I added hot honey and Dave's sauce to mine and they were amazing. Fries are standard crinkle cut, but well seasoned and crispy. Mac and cheese was good, pretty much the exact kind you'd want as a kid...gooey and Kraft like flavored but with shells and a little wetter. Mozzarella "sticks" were good, I got them in Mild and if anything they were seasoned with the same seasoning they use for the chicken and very good, but surprisingly a bit too salty for me...I'd probably stick to the sandwiches and the fries to be honest. OKAY, but for the HEAT LEVELS: I debated for a while on which to order because I'd say we have a decent spice tolerance...like habaneros are my favorite, but I find them spicy. Buldak ramen is hot as heck, but manageable. To be safe, I got us each a Mild and Medium the first time and we noticed very little variation between the two, and maaaaybe a small spice kick on the back end with the Medium. That being said, we both agreed we'd like a little extra spice next time and considering the jump between Mild and Medium was so minimal, we figured Hot or Extra Hot would be good for us. WE WERE SO WRONG. We ordered again on Sunday. Two Hot sandwiches and one Extra Hot to share...and I highly recommend ordering either of those if you enjoy pain, anguish, are looking to smell colors and taste sounds; because I'm pretty sure we both almost simply passed away. I used half a large container of Dave's sauce on my Hot sandwich as well as an ungodly amount of honey...and by the time the tears in my eyes cleared I realized my fiance was just walking laps through the house in between bites. The flavor is still there, but at what cost? About 20 minutes after eating we both resigned to carrying the fireball in our stomachs to lie down and wait to succumb to our choices, only to awake 4 hours later with hiccups and burps that would make a fire breathing dragon envious. Just be warned if you like spice, you won't find it in the Medium except for at a totally normal amount, if you love spice...you'll find it and then hate that you did at the Hot or above amount. Suffice to say, we'll be returning often...or ordering (whatever)...but we're sticking to Medium even if that makes us wimpy. And if you know someone who chooses Extra Hot or Reaper for enjoyment, you should not only fear them, but get a restraining order...because something ain't right if you can enjoy that. And if you're chaotic like us and STILL want to try a higher spice amount, do yourself a favor and just order a single tender first to try the different levels so you can enjoy your meal fully without being surprised at how one level can increase the spice by 1% and then the next somehow jumps it up 50%. I wish there was a way to get a Medium-Hot one, but I'd still rather take the less spicy, more flavor. Anyways, perfectly cooked chicken, fast service and I'd highly recommend!

Overall, I thought it was decent, but personally it didn't really stand out from some of the other hot chicken spots around. The chicken was crispy and juicy, fries were solid, and the heat level had a nice kick without overpowering everything. Good food overall, just not something that personally blew me away. What really stood out though was the customer service. Everyone was friendly, welcoming, and attentive. The restaurant was clean, the food came out quick, and the atmosphere had a fun energy to it. One thing my wife and daughter really enjoyed was the cheese sticks. That cheese pull was actually super satisfying and probably one of the highlights of the meal for us Definitely one of those moments you almost have to record before taking a bite. Would I come back? Probably if I was nearby and craving hot chicken, but for me it was more of a solid casual spot than a must-have destination. Still worth trying at least once if you haven't been before.
