I think if you are not dipping the chicken in sauces it isn't very interesting on it's own. Unlike Pok Pok's chicken that had a bunch of flavor I was left wanting more spices. The fall-off-the-bone chicken (which had a wing, a thigh, and a drumstick) was left skin-on, seasoned, and fried extra-crispy. It paired excellently with the dedicated bowl of rich Malayu-style curry (which we otherwise wish was warmer) and the sweet Thai chili sauce. The sides of sticky rice and buttery pull-apart roti were otherwise admirable conduits for the sauces. Our drink reminded me much more of mango lassi than horchata, but it was enjoyable all the same. The first time I came here for lunch and I was starving after an early work morning- I ordered three dishes and a gin drink. Would eat again and again. Have since been here 3x and brought some fam in town visiting and they absolutely loved it. The curries, the roti, the spices and the heat. I've tried about 8 things on the menu and none were bad. The marinated fried chicken and the curries are my go-to's. You can't go wrong. They have an excellent and creative cocktail selection that I would urge you to try when you come. Ok I do not know why it took me so long to come here and I am still drooling over the Hat Yai combo days later my visit. TLDR: this is a MUST VISIT in the Portland area if you want some delicious and comforting food and a place to bring visitors to impress. There is a self-serve utensils and water station right when you walk in and they also have outside picnic table seating as well. Walking in the space is brightly lit and colorful on a sunny day, the table arrangements inside and the blue checkers table makes it feel extra homey. I got the Hat Yai combo plate which came with 3 pieces of perfectly fried chicken (no flour so perfect for my gluten free friend!), the creamiest coconut curry, a piece of fluffy and buttery roti, and generous amount of sticky rice and pickled veggies for $20. My friend got different variations of the plates and drinks too. The cauliflower with egg dish was delicious with the tender cauliflowers at the perfect texture and the creamy egg with all the flavorful spices. The cucumber salad was the refreshing acidity we needed to cut through all the richness of the chicken and curry. The iced coffee was strong and the basil lemonade was potent in the best way. Celebrated a friend's birthday at Hat Yai and it was a clear favorite with the table! We ordered the hat yai for 4, which comes with roti curry and sticky rice and the star of the show, the fried chicken. We also wanted to try the brisket curry, southern pad thai and a few cocktails (hat yai daiquiri, coconut mango horchata, pandas gin and tonic, lychee slushy). The horchata was the clear favorite. When I'm feeling like Thai but want something more interesting than the usual pad thai or panang curry, I go to Hat Yai. On the normal menu, my go to is the spicy pork basil - definitely spicy and I love that! On my most recent visit, I noticed that they have a lot more specials now, as big as the normal menu (which is pretty small). I tried beef cheek in a turmeric based curry and it's definitely something I never tasted before! The beef cheek was so tender it just melts in your mouth. The curry is .... different but not bad. I even found some stinky beans in it which floored me. Being for SE Asia I know this bean and it's definitely an acquired taste (even in Asia) and I was surprised they added it in the curry. Disrespectful service and a disappointing overall experience. Last Thursday night, we met up with friends at their SE Belmont location around 7:30 pm. The restaurant was busy but not packed. There were open tables inside and outside. Despite that, the staff seemed overwhelmed and disengaged. When I approached to order, the cashier barely made eye contact. I asked a simple question about the menu since it was my first visit, and the response was dismissive. It felt like I was bothering them just by asking. They appeared uninterested in helping and seemed distracted throughout the ordering process. I ordered the Southern Pad Thai with added shrimp. It took some time to arrive. When it finally did, I took one bite and immediately sensed something was wrong. The flavor was unpleasant with a gamy aftertaste. The egg in the dish was raw and runny, more like a sauce. At the time, that might be how they make their Pad Thai. Now, a week later, I looked at their menu and saw it clearly states "fried egg." So, what I was served wasn't intentional; it was poorly made. Then I tried the shrimp. The first one I bit into was almost raw. I spat it into my napkin. At that point, I stopped eating. I didn't say anything because we were with out-of-town guests who picked the place, and I didn't want to embarrass them by criticizing their choice of restaurant. We were reconnecting after years apart, and addressing a food issue would have taken time away from that. It also took so long for the food to arrive that I assumed a remake wouldn't come before we had to leave. When the server brought out another dish ordered by someone at our table, they asked who it was for. When someone said it was for the table to share, the server made a face and placed the plate at the far corner of the table, away from everyone. It was rude and unnecessary. The only thing I enjoyed was a bite of roti, which another guest ordered. It was flavorful and well prepared. But the rest of the experience, from the food to the service, was so disappointing that I felt compelled to write this review a week later. The Phucket noodles were to die for, the poached egg made it so creamy. The chicken marinade is flavorful, the curry was buttery coconutty and rich in flavor. The roti was perfectly crisp and reminded me of Moroccan msemeen, but a starchier version. The sticky rice paired well with everything else. I found the mango coconut horchata to be more of a mango lassi taste because it was thicker but still super yummy.
