Such a great time. Our instructor was very helpful. He gave everyone individual instructions to help us hit our target. He made sure everyone was throwing safely. The waiting area outside of the caged throwing area is rather tight and it's difficult for people moving past other groups to get to the bar. Come on. Axes. You get to throw freaking axes. You get to throw hatches while having a craft beverage. It would be really hard to mess this up. Thankfully Hatches & Hops does not mess it up, and it's an amazing time. Yes I know it's technically a hatchet, and not an ax. Yes I'm still running on the adrenaline high. My buddy's wife threw his birthday here and we all couldn't have been more excited. It's a pretty small area with each hatchet throwing area caged off (similar to a batting cage). When you walk past all the areas, they've setup a bar area with craft brews and snacks. We were lucky to have gone so close to Halloween because they had a zombie theme going on. Rather than regular targets, they setup boards with a zombie drawn out on it so that you get points allocated to the part of the zombie you hit (more points for the head than the groin). The setup is pretty straightforward. You reserve a hatchet throwing area, and in your party you get to throw in pairs. They walk you through the rules and how to throw. Rules are pretty simple- don't wear a hat, don't bring your beverage into the cage, don't walk up to the board while someone is throwing. They give you three rounds- one to practice, one to see how many points you can add up, and one face off elimination. Word to the wise- do know throw with all your might (like I thought I would have to). Follow through and aim is your best friend here. The staff is super cool, beers are great, you're getting your money's worth, and you get to have a kick ass story for a WHILE. Definitely check it out. read more

So I was sort of a pain in the ass planning a surprise birthday for my fiancée. Andrew, the GM was awesome in accommodating a larger than normal group and made me feel comfortable about having the event there. Taylor, our coach was amazing. We had a party of 15 and it was an absolute blast. I am also happy to report that they DO now serve beer, fulfilling the HOPS portion of their name. Their line up included local buffalo favorites. As far as the hatchet throwing, the instructor was awesome, and structured our party into three phases, training, round robin seeding, and single elimination tournament. He kept things moving, keeping it both fast pace and fun. It was a very relaxed, fun environment and safety was never a concern. I was not a big fan of this experience. First off the place was put together with pallets and horrible craftsmanship. It was like standing in an abandoned building paying $7 for every beer. They do not have liquor. My group had a reservation for 10:30. We stood there and had the rules explained to us 2x because they had the wrong people with us at first. I basically paid $40 to throw an axe about 9 times and the rest of the time was watching strangers throw. It was annoying because all week long my buddies and I are ready to fight for bragging rights and then you end up throwing against people you don't even know. I got to throw against one of my friends in one round only. All the other times I was against a person I have never met before. We were very disappointed by this. The trainer we had was terrible. Talk to you mid throw, he had no real advice. Never saw him ring the bell when people got bullseyes. We had to wait for him to take the scores in the back and add them up. We are talking simple math like scores of 4+2+1=. Come on man you need us to stand around while you do addition? Could have easily been calculated before the next person even threw. He was hard to understand because he barely had any voice left. I will never be back to this place it is a waste of time and money in my opinion. read more

Went here today with some co-workers for a team building experience and cannot stress enough how much fun it was. Our guide through the process was super nice and energetic, providing advice along the way. We played tournament style after getting warmed up, and were able to socialize throughout the day as well. They played great pump up music. The bar was wine and draft beer which was nice. They also had pizzas which were pretty good. I can't wait to try this again! read more

I can not recommend this place enough. It is a lot of fun. The beer, the pizza and the workers are great! The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of five is for 2 reasons. The first is the price. At $40 a person it is the a little pricy and second is if you are part of large group -and if you don't advance- you could be sitting around for a while. I recommend 8-12 people. This place left me with mixed feeling. They were five of us and we were put together with another group of 11. I am sure there is a limit when you can be alone (maybe 8 people) but I think they should have split us up into two groups of 8 (the middle throwing cage was empty the entire time). 16 people really just amounted to a lot of standing around for 2 1/2 hours. There were five rounds in total and in each round I got to throw five times that makes $1.60 per throw of a hatchet which is a less than favorable return on investment. Overall It was very restricted to have to throw overhead double handed instead of one handed. I have been to other axe throwing places that are significantly less restrictive and you're not in a cage and get to throw more frequently. We spent 2 1/2 hours there while throwing for maybe 15 minutes. At that rate it's more like a bar with a $40 cover charge. I do have to mention that I did have fun but that's more likely due to me hanging out with good friends and drinking. read more

I didn't know how fun throwing a hatchet would be, but it was so much fun! Do not just write this place off cause you will be missing out on a good time. I would recommend this to everyone. I had no idea what I was doing so my first throw didn't come close to the target. The instructors take time to help you get good form and direct you on how to throw, how to adjust, and how to move to get the hatchet to the target. Everyone in our group practiced to get the hang of it and then we started like a tournament and went against other people to get the most points then we did a round robin and in the end had a winner. It was so much fun getting better with every throw and having friendly competition. It was a great stress relief and so much fun. By the end I was getting pretty good at it was sad to see the session end. I will be back to try at it some more and have more laughs. read more

We were in Buffalo for my cousin's wedding and stumbled across this place walking around downtown on a Friday night. The appeal was immediate- being able to throw a weapon while sipping on beers - who wouldn't see the fun in that? We had our kids with us that night so we couldn't check it out. However, a quick internet search told us that walk-ins are allowed for Sunday Funday. Of course, we had to go back that Sunday to try it out. My husband and I got there around 6:30pm on Sunday and it was slow enough where we got right in and didn't have to wait too long. We were paired up with other people who were also in small groups to make it more fun and more "tournament style". Elijah was our instructor and he was great. He tried so hard to help me maintain proper form and focus with his tips on hand placement, body alignment, etc but since I'm not much of an athlete it all went in one ear, out the other. My ability to have my axe stick to the target at all was just pure dumb luck since the majority of my throws ended up with the axe just bouncing off the wood. But it was incredibly fun. This has been our most fun date night this year. Hubs was a natural axe-thrower and quickly got the hang of it. I was the weak link on our team but I had so much fun, it didn't matter that I lost our bet. The craft beers were great as well. Definitely check this place out for your next date night! read more

Visited with a group of 5 on a open throw night. They allowed one of our party to buy a pass and then told the rest of us that it was full so we could not purchase a pass to throw. This review is about open throw- I went to Hatchets & Hops for open throw since a friend from out of town was here for a few days and we were looking for something fun to do. While actually throwing the hatchets was fun, we were only able to throw twice in two hours. When we arrived, we signed up for open throw at the bar and assumed we would be told when to begin. A while later when we'd been told nothing we asked the bartender what to do and he informed us our time had already started. We made our way over to the open throw lane and was instructed how to throw the hatchet. It was a lot of fun. After our throw we waited OVER AN HOUR to throw for a second time. As we waited, more people signed up for the open throw and were allowed to cut right in front of us.. as the night wore on, so many people were in one lane for open throw that it was impossible to keep track of who was next. We were tired of just waiting around for our next turn so we ended up leaving (about two and a half hours after we arrived) after just two throws. We confronted the manager about the extensive wait for open throw and he said and I quote "well that's what you get with open throw." I told the manager there should be a cap on the people allowed in for one lane during open throw because we really weren't throwing at all.. just waiting around... his response was "we aren't going to turn people around when we can make money. The only time we will turn people away is when we are at maximum capacity". I thought this was a very selfish response as he was not considering the customers who have already paid to be here. Another bartender/ manager said .. and I quote again"well you should have paid $40 dollars instead of $20 to be a part of a party" I said "well I don't have enough friends on random Thursday to make up a party". And he responded "well you need to make more friends". Overall, Hatchet throwing is super fun!! But the way this place is run is unorganized and the way the managers responded to my questions was absolutely disgusting. Very greedy lot they are. Don't care about the experience their customers have... they just care about the money they are making. Save your money and go next door to Misuta Chows great food, drinks, music, and games (that you will actually be able to play). read more

What a great time doing something completely out of the ordinary. Fun and frustrating in a, I'm competitive and horrible at throwing an axe kind of way. We were greeted by Clay when we arrived and he made a point of introducing himself. Throughout our time at H&H, Clay had remembered all of our names which is darn good customer service! Drew was our fun and witty host. He went through the rules, safety guidelines and taught us how to throw. Some of us caught on better than others. Clay, Drew, one of the cooks and the bartender, what a great team of people at H&H. Truly a team to be proud of. Each staff member took so much pride in being a key part of H&H. That is what we felt the whole time we were there. $40 per person, minimum of six people gets you two hours in your lane. After practice throws, a round robin and then our tournament, we still had a little over half an hour of time left. We would have liked to throw some more but once you have a final winner, they thank you and ask you to exit the throwing area. That is the only thing I would change if I could. $40 should give you two full hours, including the welcome and instructional portions. They are hoping to have their liquor license soon. They serve pickles from Barrel & Brine and the most incredible hot pretzels I have had in a really long time. Their fries are air fried. You have to try the fries! This experience is a rough one compared to other hatchet throwing places. The staff won't leave you alone and spend the entire time screaming at the top of their lungs at you, and to maximize revenue, they put strangers into your pit and stage competitions between strangers, even if that's not what you want. We were visiting Buffalo and walked past Hatchets and Hops one morning and came back on a Sunday night. We were able to walk right in and take part in a Cinco de Mayo event. Elijah, our instructor was so encouraging and helpful in teaching us how to throw. He most definitely made sure everyone was having fun. Incredibly disappointed in both the policies and setup of this business and their customer service. I tried to set up a session for a bachelor party for my best friend, only to find not only were their hours and slot times very specific and restrictive, it was impossible to make a reservation for less than six people on their website. We had a group of four, but were more than willing to pay for the two remaining slots if needed. When I called them to see if I could make a reservation over the phone, I was told a manager would call me back. Never got a call. I called again and was told the same thing, and when I told him it was time sensitive he ASSURED me I'd receive a call back soon. I never got that call. We were really looking forward to making this place a part of our bachelor party, and they were unaccommodating and unhelpful at every turn. If you've got less than 6 people this place will not be worth your time, money, or energy. read more

We had a fantastic time tonight! A group of six of us made plans at Hatchets & Hops and we all agreed that it was even more fun than we expected. The coaching staff were great at teaching us the proper form. The contest was organized well and the entire operation was set up for a safe and enjoyable experience. So much fun! The instructors do a great job taking the time to show you good form for hatchet throwing. It's also fun to just chill and drink and watch other people throw hatchets. If you go in a small group, they'll pair you up until you're one super group, but it's a good way to meet new people who also like throwing hatchets...probably the only way you meet those people actually... read more

What a sad experience we had this weekend. First of all, Hatchets and Hops is actually Hatchets and Herbal Teas and Coffee. They do not even sell any alcoholic drinks. They claim that later in 2017 food and drinks will be added. Then they probably should have waited to open up their doors until they were ready to actually be Hatchets and HOPS. Second of all, we got totally ripped off. The place is run by 20 somethings, and they were very rude to us. We planned on having 10 people in our group but unfortunately things came up and only 4 of us were able to make it. We paid a $200 deposit and then were charged an addition $280 when we arrived. So we paid $480 for 4 people AND they added 6 people that we didn't know to our lane. For $120 we each threw the axe about 20 times. They run a tournament with the 10-12 people on your lanes. Once you get knocked out you have to sit there and watch everyone else compete. So the 4 of us, who paid $120 each, had to sit there and watch these people we don't know compete in the final rounds of the tournament. They did not lose money by the members of our party not showing up because they were able to sell out their lanes that night anyway. Very sad that a new business is going to come into Buffalo and treat their customers like this. read more

The concept of this place is very cool, but the way it is ran is mediocre at best. Went there yesterday. They don't have a liquor licence yet which wasn't a big deal. If you are going to book this please try to get 12 people. If you have 6 in your group you will be paired up with another group of 6. Seems fine to be paired up, expect the group we were paired up with yesterday were horrid!!(not this facility fault they were jerks but it put a damper on our visit). They complained the whole time and called the winner in our group a continuous cheater! I feel the price is out of control for what you get to do. Everyone gets to practice for a few rounds. Then they put you in a bracket game. So if you don't throw well your out and have to watch everyone else play. Seems extremely unfair since everyone pays $40. Also if you games ends before your two hours you don't get to throw anymore. We had a whole 30 mins in our time and it was a waste!!! So basically you pay $40 and end up throwing an average of 10 mins. It was fun to try but I would never do it again, at least not until certain things are fixed. read more
