Super interesting little record shop in Detroit Shoreway. I'm not even sure how to describe their collection of inventory. It's a blend of underground stuff, retro, world music, hip hop, and rare 80s and 90s releases. You're probably not going to find too many new alternative releases, but it's this way by design. This place is intentionally small, with a focal point being the listening station within the store. Its not terribly often you can actually listen to something before you purchase it, and I love the "please touching everything" vibe the store has. If you're an urban adventurer or even just someone who likes to discover record shops in new cities, you must stop here. This is certainly the record store to hit for that one vinyl you can't seem to find anywhere else, or if you just feel like looking through some crazy selections. They also have a hugeee crate of bargain used vinyls which you could spend an hour sifting through. Didn't come in here looking for anything in particular, but of course they got me. Purchase: Beastie Boys Ill Communication. LISTEN ALL YA'LL ITS A SABOTAGE!

    Thanks

My son and I love vinyl. I'm a '70s kid from high school and college, so I know a lot of music…read more We've been to several record shops. This one has to be our favorite. The guy at the counter was super friendly, and just reeked Cool. He loves the rescue cat that roams the stores. He even has a coin box and poster explaining a cat rescue group. I like that compassion. The shop is cool with album covers on the floor. That is an art piece in itself. Today is my birthday, and my son is buying. First on the list is Jefferson Starship's Red Octopus. Other shops have told us the album is hard to find, sells fast, expensive. We found it!!!! The price was very good!!! I'm ecstatic! Also got The Doors, Three Dog Night, and Gordon Lightfoot. I've heard about Robin Trower, so I got one of his albums. They have a listening turntable with headphones that I used. There is a group of nostalgic records that were goofy and fun. A small stage is for anyone to perform. Inquire at the store.

Also, honest. The day I arrived I could not remember exactly where the store was, so I called again. Noah was very kind again and narrowed it down. Upon entry Noah was very friendly and helpful. He smiled and we laughed at some of the goofiness I entered the store with. I think I had two LP boxes, and Noah came to aid. Pete the owner came out at some point and amidst all the small talk, you could tell these folks are what small independent places need. They went through my stuff and we'd have some small chats todo about nothing really. I can babble when I sense friendliness. Save in point if you're reading the review. You could see the regulars that come by, other folks... and just a genuine cool place with a cool owner and co-worker. They could teach a graduate school class on customer service. We need that lately it seems! On a scale of 1-5 they should get a 10 for just being human and humane. As I was leaving Pete and I had a very cool, relatively personal conversation which was very endearing. So if you're on the east side of CLE or early for a show at the Beachland on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday... check em out!

The records are fairly priced, especially for their condition, and their collection smacks of good taste, with an especially interesting soul section. This is a record store that someone who own 2K records will still find something they haven't seen before.

What a cool vintage record shop…read more I stopped in here with nothing special in mind other than to browse on a rainy day. The store is well organized and I was excited to see they had a local section and some more niche categories. There's a LOT of inventory, like, a lot. If you're a seasoned collector looking for older gems, you're going to have a field day here. In the back, they had some kitschy old school records that had me laughing out loud (aka, How To Strip For Your Husband, Mommy Where Do Babies Come From, etc.) The space itself has a live record playing spinning tunes, and in the back corner, they rent(?) a room to The Buckland Gallery of Witchcraft and Magick. Yes, you read that correctly. I freaking love that. I don't actually know who runs it (no one greeted me, and I couldn't tell who worked there), so don't be discouraged if you walk in and feel out of place. I always think its nice connect with staff, but I really don't care either way, though some people might! A Separate Reality is absolutely worth a stop into. If you have a record aficionado in your life, a gift card would be a top-notch win of a present. They take a lot of pride in their collection here.

If you're looking for anything resembling popular music, don't come here. You will be disappointed…read more If you're looking, however, for dance, electronic, or experimental music, this is the right place. The owner is, shall we say, a bit prickly. He sized me up the second I walked in. Because I've been going to record stores for years and have encountered music snobs more than once, this amused me more than anything. Once I pulled out a DJ Stingray (legendary techno DJ from Detroit) album, he knew I wasn't a noob. He got further confirmation when I asked about some Fennesz (amazing Austrian experimental guitarist) albums. Once you get him going about music, he warms up. Bent Crayon has very hard-to-find titles like Drexciya (iconic sci-fi techno duo from Detroit) reissues, the latest from Perlon (dance music label in Berlin), the Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, or other left-field music. Bent Crayon is mostly vinyl but also has a solid selection of CDs. Fair warning: The corner shelves of experimental music are alphabetized but the rest of the store follows a mysterious organizational logic. In other words, you have to dig, not scan. I bought reissues of Stingray's Aqua Team 2, Drexciya's Harnessed the Storm, and Cluster's Zuckerzeit (Cluster was an electronic music duo from Germany who worked a bunch with Brian Eno). Bent Crayon is not for everyone, but it's still pretty rad.
