I moved away from the Berkshires last year, and one of the main things that I miss is going to Haven on the weekends. The food is delicious, and the staff are great - they're friendly and make sure that things run smoothly even when it's crazy busy in the summers. Lenox is as super-liberal and barely-there hipster as it gets (outside of Brooklyn) when it comes to a small town in the affluent Berkshires and the Haven Cafe and Bakery certainly carries that shabby-chic vibe as well. With spartan wooden tables, a bustling atmosphere, this seems to be *THE* place to be for breakfast, lunch and brunch in Lenox. The baked goods I saw on display like their brownies, carrot cake, chocolate cake are clearly home-made and made fresh each day. I couldn't get distracted with dessert first so I had their burger. Made with fresh ground meat and served on a challah bun, you really can't ask for more when it comes to burger, made with a few simple, quality ingredients coming together to make something so tasty. I could tell most of the patrons here were locals and the serving staff all seemed to know them. This place is insanely busy so you have to be ready to wait. Still, for the portions you get and the quality, prices are very reasonable. I'd come here again if only to try their Bloody Mary the next time and grab a dessert on the go. read more

Busy place but the service friendly and quick even when it's super busy. You order at the counter- which is dangerous because not only does every dish on the menu sound appealing, but while you are at that counter you are confronted with a bevy of wonderful looking baked goods. How can you ever choose!? We didn't so alongside our brunch orders, we got a muffin and a slice of cake to share. Anyway, once you've placed your order you're given a number and the food will be delivered right to you. Between the four of us we had omelets, a breakfast burrito, and pancakes. Everything was delicious and well presented. Each omelette is prepared as a French rolled omelette and along side are potatoes, salad, and fresh baked bread. The burrito had the same potatoes and salad. The pancakes come with REAL maple syrup (at no up charge). The muffin and sour cream coffee cake were so good I nearly went back to order some more! There's a great variety on the menu so aside from the usual favorites there is a smattering of more unusual items like polenta. You are certain to find something you like no matter how picky. The only thing I didn't check was how many gluten free baked items were available. Outdoor seating was great and it's dog friendly - it was busy but we were found a table by staff before we'd even ordered our food. This was a relief because I was afraid our food would be ready and we'd end up eating it standing up! I saw a review that meals were served in takeout containers. I'm a breakfast aficionado, and while up in Lend x for the weekend, I stopped at Haven. The food choices were intimidating but fun to peruse. Wonderful baked goods and coffee. I loved my meal - roasted vegetables with polenta and egg, coffee, and a mimosa. Everything was fast yet perfectly done. The restaurant had a delightful vibe - laid back, small and medium groups, lots of readers, a quiet hum of satisfaction. I hope to return very soon. read more

So good I went back a second time! I almost never revisit a restaurant on vacation, because I want to try everything, but I just couldnt resist another trip to Haven,. If you like fresh, homemade, local, ingredients based food, you HAVE to go to this adorable country cafe for breakfast. Sure its a bit of a pain to stand on line to place your order, and then hope to snag a free table, but who cares when the food is this good and this unique? The croissant french toast is even better than it sounds, they have wonderful pancakes, the french omelettes with local cabot cheddar are the best I've ever had, the biscuit egg sandwich was unique and actually tasted like summer, and do not skip the bacon AND the sausage, both almost too good to be real. Oh yea...if you like Oatmeal, make sure you order some. See why I had to go more than once? I love that they fresh brew several kinds of iced tea (the green is amazing) and offer several kinds of natural sweeteners. I didnt have the coffee but it looked and smelled as good as everything else. Oh, and everyone who works there is incredibly nice (and patient with first timers who cant decide what to get). Haven is a critical addition to Lenox. The area is devoid of healthy, high quality food at a reasonable price, ESPECIALLY during the day time hours. Sure, in the evening you can go to one of the high-end restaurants but the prices are inflated and the quality is inconsistent. Haven skillfully fills that gap. The prices are on the med-high end for breakfast but the quality and reliability of the food is really great. The best bargain on the menus is the Breakfast Burrito. It is delish. I get it almost every time. Morning Glory Muffin is also fantastic. Get an Arnold Palmers with a shot of vodka and you'll have a lovely brunch. read more

I grew up in the Berkshires and still go back to visit family throughout the year. What has taken me so long to get to this great breakfast place?? The food was heaven! I started with a latte and it was delish. For my entree I had the Croissant French Toast which was dipped in cinnamon-vanilla egg batter topped with powdered sugar . It was truly amazing! We don't usually get desert at breakfast but couldn't help ourselves as the chocolate cupcake looked so good - and it was! The price I thought was on point for the quality of food- my delightful french toast was $6.50. I love the ambiance here and could probably spend hours here with a latte and a book. My one gripe was the confusion that greeted people upon entering. They really need someone at the door letting customers know that you order at the counter and then take a seat. We came here in the summer - which I may not do again, and people were getting their food with no where to sit because other people were hoarding tables before their orders were ready - just takes away from having a relaxing meal while you are watching humans act like seagulls. Hence the knock off of a star. I will definitely come back here (on the off season) and recommend to anyone in the area! read more

Our experience at Haven was just bizarre. The food here is quite tasty. It's just not worth the wait for the poor service from the lackadaisical staff. My fiancée and I waited 35 minutes for our two sandwiches and a bowl of soup..! The wait staff moved with no sense of urgency. The hair of the men who work here is longer than that of the women; many have nose rings. When I asked where our food was, the waitress said "Oh, are you still waiting for breakfast, or did you order lunch? We are still backed-up from breakfast..." It was 11:45 a.m. The wait staff then served the wrong food to the people sitting next to us; I could overhear one waitress saying to another something to the effect of 'No, no, I know it says the arugula salad is for table five, but it's wrong, it is for table two...' Oh my god. The croissant french toast is ridiculous. Creamy, rich, indulgent... It's a small portion, but it's not too expensive (to me, who is used to NYC prices) and it's sooo incredibly good. My boyfriend's eggs (I don't even remember what he got) were good, but he ate my french toast, too, so we ended up getting the blueberry baked french toast for dessert, which was also amazing....like bread pudding with blueberry sauce and whipped mascarpone... But the croissant french toast was just....oh my god. The coffee is also really good, and free refills! The waitresses were all really kind, and the entire place was cozy. This was the third year that my wife and I have traveled to Massachusetts' Berkshire County for a concert at Tanglewood. I am actually angry with myself that this is the first time that I have visited Haven Cafe & Bakery in those three years. We went in for breakfast on Saturday morning before heading over to Herman Melville's home in Pittsfield. My wife ordered the Haven Scramble and I ordered off their "Specials" menu: the baked blueberry french toast. WOW... this was easily the best french toast I have ever had... and I order french toast wherever I go. We enjoyed our breakfasts so much that we decided to go back on Sunday morning before heading home. I was excited to try something different on Sunday morning, but when I discovered that the baked blueberry french toast was still on the menu, I couldn't help myself. I can't wait until we get back to Lenox, MA next year so that we can have breakfast at Haven again! read more

This review is based on one visit (June 2010). What I tried: smoked salmon scramble, Aegean Salad, coffee. Tasting Notes: Very fresh ingredients and creative menu for a bakery/breakfast spot. My smoked salmon scramble was a great combination of slightly salty (thanks to the smoked salmon) and slightly sweet (thanks to the caramelized onions). The Aegean salad is essentially a Greek salad with tuna. It was very fresh, but I don't recommend you get it unless you need to detox from a weekend of bad eating and lots of wine tasting (the awesome Wine Cellar with amazing prices, is just a 2min walk from this place). My friends had the croissant french toast and the pancakes, all of which I must try when I return to this delicious place. The friend sitting across from me ordered pancakes with rum syrup with coconut flakes and pineapples-- and I made a note to myself to get that next time I'm here. The coffee is really delicious and aromatic- I don't know whether it's locally roasted, but it's the best coffee I've had in a while. Ambience: bustling on summer weekends... and the conversations seem to be of the sort you hear in NYC (except the place is way less crowded). That's probably because everyone in there is escaping the Manhattan heat and humidity. Service: You order and pay at the counter and then sit down and wait for your dishes to be brought to you. The staff is really friendly and will joke around with you, and they are so accomodating to large groups that we left a 20% tip at the table (even though it's not a strict "sit down and eat" place) because we appreciated them so much. Recommendation: Great place to get a delicious cup of coffee and a muffin (their bakery looked and smelled heavenly) and hang out with a newspaper...or a fun place with a large group of friends. The reason I hesitate to give this place a fifth star is because of the pricing-- everything here, as good as it is, is a dollar or two above price point. read more

What a fabulous find while visiting the Berkshire's! We came in on a Saturday afternoon for coffee and a nibble. My husband ordered a grilled cheese and I ordered a slice of apple cake. The cake was nothing less than perfect. Moist, flavorful and scrumptious! So good in fact, that we returned for breakfast on Sunday morning and I took a piece home with me! Overpriced would be my first impression. For a bowl of soup, a cup of soup, a sandwich and 2 drinks was way too expensive. The soup was just blah - tomato soup is hard to make right and this was just marinara sauce in a bowl pretty much. The bread was good but the sandwich itself was lathered with mayo. Also - got a weird vibe when we entered, we obviously hadn't been there before and would have liked a bit of a warmer welcome and a rundown of what we where supposed to do and where the menu was located. Cute little place to kill some time waiting for your bus back to the city after a stay at Kripalu. Lots of creative coffee drinks and a good wine and bottled beer list (Smuttynose, Peak Organic, BBC) in case you REALLY want to rejoin the world. I didn't get to try it, but they had a yummy-looking brunch menu. Friendly staff, warm atmosphere. And according to my Kripalu shuttle driver, this place has the best pastries in town. Love this place. I visit the Berkshires a couple times a year, and I always, always make a stop at Haven Cafe. Everything I've had is delicious - my favorite, withouth a doubt, is the carrot cake. Full of carrots and topped with a thick layer of delecable icing, it's a treat like no other (I think it's around $4, and totally worth it). I've also been a fan of the Breakfast Burrito ($9) and the Grilled Cheese ($10.50 when you put tomato and avocado on it, which I do). The menu changes frequently, but trust that everything is fresh, primarily organic, and outstanding. Their selection of beer, wine, and spirits is equally fantastic. I'm a super fan of their cocktails - (but note: this is definitely not a bar scene) - most of which feature spirits from Berkshire Mountain Distilleries. Try a Gin & Tonic ($8), with the excellent Greylock Gin or the Housemade Apple Cider with Berkshire Bourbon (also $8). The Bloody Mary with Ice Glen Vodka rocks my socks as well. It closes at 3 p.m., so plan accordingly. And it can get seriously busy at peak times - I like to go around 2, when the lunch crowd thins out and service is quick. Also note, there is no waiter service. Order at the counter, pay for your food, take a number from the nice lady or fella from behind the counter, find a seat, and your food will be delivered to you. You want more food? Go back to the counter. You don't want to eat at a table? Take out is just as welcome. read more

Wow! A great brunch experience! The coffee is fantastic. Best I've had in Lenox. And its bottomless. *warm fuzzies* I love that you get the bill out of the way up front. No waiting for your server or your check. Makes things efficient. The initial line can be long, but once you've ordered and paid, you're done. The food comes out pretty fast. The menu is great. I had the Crab Benedict and it was delish. Not too much hollandaise and a good amount of crab, and its served over a perfectly toasted croissant. *drool* The potatoes are hot and delicately spiced. And a little side mesclun salad helps shave off a bit of the guilt, and is perfectly dressed. The Arnold Palmer was just the right combo of sweet and tart. Probably the best spot in the Berkshire for brunch. This location is always busy, so I recommend you arrive around 9 or after 12. Large mimosas are $9 and they always have changing seasonal specials. The croissant French toast is my favorite, light and fluffy and not heavy like regular French toast. It almost makes me feel like I'm eating healthy. The egg dishes are also really good and if you're allergic to anything they offer making your dish on a separate stovetop. Forget spoon and come here instead! read more
