Sitting under the pergola at Haven was one of the highlights of our San Juan cycling tour. Solid service, nice atmosphere and good meals. Yes, we couldn't try everything the first night, so we came back the second night. Highlights? Wedge salad, portobello dip, roasted beet salad, and fried pickles. When you spend the day cycling around the island and want a really nice meal, this is the spot for you. Sort of. We felt kind of silly in our spandex, but tried to dress it up as much as possible. The only weird thing: their POS system went down and had no other way to process our payment. It was quite cold out and we sat outside for 45 minutes waiting to leave. No one offered us anything warm to drink or to move inside. We ended up leaving them our credit card number to process later and they over charged us. In this sleepy little town I wasn't sure where to go. I thought I'd drive around & see what was out there. Stopped at the Islander which was SUPER UNIMPRESSIVE (horrible service) and thought I would go back to my motel. I went to the little restaurant across the street called the Haven. OMG! It was amazing! There were only a few tables full when I got there, but shortly the place was packed and buzzing! There was only one waitress and she was like superwoman! She took care of everyone promptly and even visited with me for a few minutes! I would highly recommend this restaurant. They have great food and great prices and super friendly staff! My wife and I enjoyed an actual sit down restaurant experience at Haven on March 24. This has been a really tough couple years for the restaurant industry, and we were delighted to see a full restaurant on a Thursday evening, just a couple days after the end of the mask mandate. Best of all, Haven requires proof of vaccination, so we could fully enjoy our experience. Haven has made some excellent choices for meal options, now requiring reservations for a multi-course dinner. At $75 for a superb four course dinner, it's a pretty good bargain. We both tried different menu options, so we were able to sample eight of their offerings. A few observations: the clams were perfectly fresh, served in a delightfully subtle wine broth; the crab cake was at least 90% crab, complemented beautifully by the microgreens, and (surprise) a jam glaze that complemented perfectly; a lovely salat Lyonaisse that pressed all the buttons; the filet was properly rare (a rarity in a restaurant), though a bit overwhelmed by the Gorgonzola complement; perfectly steamed asparagus; absolutely stellar bread as an accompaniment. For dessert, creme broulee and flourless chocolate torte. Please give Haven a try. The servers are personable and pleasant, and this restaurant knows what it's doing. read more

This place was awesome. My wife had the vegan portobello french dip and I had the cuban. Both were very tasty. I'm usually a big fan of meaty sandwiches, but I was surprised that my wife's vegan portobello was even tasty especially with the au jus. read more

Service is slow. Our water stayed empty, we were at our table over an hour and the only water we had was poured when we were seated. We waited over an hour for a Cuban (not good at all and if you've ever had one in the Keys you will be disappointed) and the guacamole (actually pretty good) we ordered as an appetizer took over 45 minutes. We won't be back, there are much better places to eat on the Island. read more

First time to Lopez and happy to have found Haven! We visit San Juan and Orcas regularly and now I feel like I have been missing out all these years bypassing Lopez. Haven has an excellent selection of beer, wine and cocktails for the thirsty traveler and local alike. The menu was eclectic, in a good way. Because of the numerous options that fit our pescetarian diet, we had a difficult time deciding what to order. Ultimately went with the burrata plate to start, the kale and Brussels sprout Caesar salad and the crab cakes. All were delicious! No room for dessert unfortunately, though all the choices sounded amazing. We will be back!! read more

I want To give this restaurant one star and five stars. The food was very good. Aside from the Bay cafe, this is the best food on the island. At least four, maybe a five. Unfortunately this place is routinely understaffed. I read another review they said if it is very busy and you have to wait, leave. I would echo that advice. You can wait an hour for your dinner after you sit down. Again great food . . . . .if you can get it. read more

This was the most phenomenal meal I've had in a very long time. Everything about this place was wonderful!

We stopped in here starving with baby in tow after a long morning of ferrying and a few mishaps that resulted in no breakfast. We were seated outside with a view of the bay in a little nook with high chair. They were so nice (sometimes people can be a bit standoffish about baby in restaurant). The burrito honestly might be the best thing I ever ate. It isn't cheap, but it's hearty, filling, and flavorful. My girlfriend had the tacos and she sad those were great as well. The vibe is nice and the views from the restaurant overlooking Fisherman Bay are amazing, especially at sunset. read more

2 great dinners, good pacing, nice wine list. Prompt and pleasant service with outstanding food. The tomato salad, the steamed clams, the filet, the pasta special with shrimp, the pasta dish from the menu with grilled chicken - all superb. The food is delicious! The drinks are mediocre. The time you will wait for those things is astronomical. They were busy for a Wednesday night, which I get. However, after we were seated (40 minutes instead of 20 minutes, but that was our bad as we wanted to sit outside) it was another 20 minutes until someone came to take our drink order, at which time we put in our food order too. 40 minutes later, we saw our server again and could order a second drink. Food came shortly after that, and our burrito and noodles were delicious, but not so delicious that they were worth waiting 45 minutes for. Weirdly enough, when we asked for the check, that came in under a minute. Good food, but not worth the wait. read more

Haven, with its soft lights, pale green walls, and ugly paintings of ships, was the closest we got to the Brooklyn dining experience on Lopez Island. Our waitress reminded one of Chloe Sevigny and made us feel very welcome. Though it was fully sat and near last seating, the hostess quickly cleared a space for us. We had salads (the kale/brussel caesar and the beet), clams, and a burger of "local beef", a beer and a cocktail. Everything was surprisingly good. Two negatives: 1) As others have said, the wait between courses is way too long. I would have expected our meal to be coursed out as salads, clams, burger, but instead it was salads, [long wait with nothing on the table], clams and burger. Oh well. 2) There were also a bunch of what sounded like cheap deep-fryer entrees from a Kitchen Nightmares episode. We just didn't try any of those, and who knows, maybe they're good. read more

I want to like this place. The setting is unsurpassed: sweeping views of the Fisherman Bay harbor and neighboring islands.The interior of the restaurant is lovely. The menu is exciting and appealing. But the execution is erratic and the service is grudging. Guests are made to feel they are imposing by asking to place an order. There are few choices on this remote island, so i will no doubt be back and hope Haven can up its game! read more

A really good, really nice place to eat in a fantastic location. Good blend of unique and traditional items, all really well done. We ate here the last two nights (once with me and my wife, once with four teenagers) so sampled a lot of things (do yourself a favor and get the Burrata Caprese and the guacamole as appetizers). The burrito is fantastic as well, and my wife raved about the prawns they had as a special. Very friendly service, though I will say that they seemed a little more distracted the second night when things were busier--they seemed a little overwhelmed with the crowd. (It was very busy.) The first night we sat outside and watched sea otters playing, and had a bald eagle fly right at us (it seemed). We saw all of them again the second night as well. What a refreshing spot on the Island to gather and share a meal. The ambiance was inviting, the menu was diverse and pricing was reasonable for the coast. Let's not forget how it all has to come in to the Island and how much of a challenge it must be these days to run a food establishment. Being a frequent visitor all year long on the Island, it's pretty quiet in January. Speaking as a past owner/operator of a restaurant/B&B in NY, I was so taken back by the demeanor of the staff. I was told that it gets very crowded, very quickly so to be sure of seating come prior to opening, much like the Ferries. As people lined up one after the other, it started to feel like a concert in the 70's, with anxious excitement. We all heard this group cheer-YOP like enthusiasm from inside, they open the doors and nothing...I smiled and said hello....nothing, no response from the, using the term loosely, Hostess. Not a smile, not a response, barked an order to one of the staff, she brought me to my table, tried to engage with her. Another girl outed water, I said hello...nothing, asked if she would be the waitress and she said no, then walked away. I thought oh, this must be the Ying to the Yang and went in to enjoy my meal. Empathy to all dealing with the public these days as it seems more and more people are so quick to displease and voice their anger but a wee bit of a smile goes a long way. Off season visit, 10/14/17, for lunch. Food was good - time to get was maybe a touch long - but not ridiculous by any means. My wife ordered the Pesto Chicken Sandwich and I had the Carnitas Tacos. Tacos were very good and my wife enjoyed her meal. I had a bite of her sandwich - it was a pesto bomb - which wasn't bad, but you better like pesto. Service was good, owners both working - one in the front of house and one cooking (alone). The owner serving us had Cameron Diaz swagger, though she said ppl think she's more Katherine Heigl. If you've frequented Lopez Island you know there isn't much in the way of restaurants. Wife has been coming here since born, I've been coming up here 31 years. If you're expecting McD's quick + Seattle Palomino's snooty cuisine - you're missing that you're on a damn island that is so far from commercial it's not funny. We don't want McD's on Lopez, no one does. Hell ppl are fighting getting cell towers on this damn island! Haven is a gem on a rock in the Straights of Juan de Fuca. We ate here a couple of times during our recent stay on Lopez. The menu is varied and the food is probably 4 star (the crab cakes are to die for), but the wait for food is way too long. It looks to me like the kitchen is undersized for the size of the restaurant. The second time we were there, we waited over 90 minutes after our order was taken. I've lived on Lopez Island for 12 years, and have seen the restaurant where the Haven is located change hands at least four times. The current owners have created a clean, tidy, open space that is friendly and very laid back and best of all, the food is delicious and straightforward. A friend of mine and I went to lunch and I had the Cuban, which was generous roast pork on a toothsome roll. Inside were layered greens, jalapeños, sautéed onions with a lush garlic aioli that complimented the earthy pork nicely. My friend had the Gado Gado plate, which came with fried tofu, miso soup and vegetable hand rolls and the sauce! The peanut sauce was to die for, very evenly balanced, not too sweet but not too vinegary. The service was attentive and very friendly. read more

I am giving this review 1 star, and that is only for the awesome view. We got all dressed up and were excited to go out for a great dining experience, boy were we wrong. We were seated in a great location next to the window with a great view. The waitress/owner with her condescending tone took our orders. When asked what the "Swimming Rama Satay" was, the answer was "Swimming Rama Satay" duh, instead of something like chicken on a skewer with peanut sauce. We were starving so asked about the proportions. "Three to four large lamb chops, three to four large scallops". After eating the appetizer with mixed emotions of, "it's ok", to "it's the slimiest and worst I've ever had", the main courses came. The sides were wrong and since the waitress had written nothing down, she started an argument over what she had heard, although the rest of us knew exactly what was ordered. Instead of making some new sides and bringing them out later, she took the plate with the entrée back to the kitchen to get cold while waiting for the correct sides to be cooked. The lamb chops were 2 of the smallest chops I have ever seen. At that point all conversation was lost and all we could do was rush to finish and get away from the waitress/owner. Once in the parking lot we realized we were all still starved, so we went down the road to another place and gorged ourselves on the fish tacos, and enjoyed the nice atmosphere. read more

Hands down, best restaurant on Lopez. I have been coming here since they opened and Haven continues to impress. The Cuban sandwich is amazing, as is everything else on the menu. We went to Haven with high expectations due to the 4 plus stars. Got there a few minutes after 7 and had to wait about a half hour which was OK as it was a pleasant night to wait outside. The hostess and our waiter were very nice and took our wine and meal of a hamburger and noodles with miso and pork at the same time as we were very hungry. Our order went in about 7:45 and we were promptly served our wine and water which was good. Then we waited and waited. Our waitress came by once and said our meals would be out soon. Finally, after an hour our food finally came. The burger was fine but the noodles, miso and pork was non edible and my wife who is not a fussy eater left almost all of it. When the waitress came by and asked how things were we told her it was not good. The only response was, I'm sorry. Not can I get you something else. So it is a stretch to give it even 1 star. If there is a wait at Haven leave. read more
