Oh where to begin.. You're greeted by a condescending and smug employee named Alvin who has the same amount of customer service as the amount of water used on the par 3 course. How he got the job as pro shop assistant is beyond me. He should be behind the shed working on cart parts and even then, should be required to wear a mask. He's the type of employee you want running the adult section of a JC Pennys. The par 3 course- the pathways to each hole is terrain that you need an ATV for. Hit a ball and it doesn't land on green? Well that ball is scuffed for life after landing and rolling on rocks, gravel, cement, pavement, and whatever else that shouldn't be on the course. Grass is a premium on this course. I guess if you pay $15 then maybe it could get a pass but anything above that, Hawaii Kai Golf Course is just ripping your $$. The "championship course (lol)". This is hands down the worst full course in the state of Hawaii and that's after experiencing Kukuiolono on Kauai. At least the Kauai one was under $30. This POS will run you about $70 if you're kamaaina. This place clearly doesn't get watered, doesn't know what a groundskeeper is, and like it's sister par 3 - grass doesn't come easy. The fairways, rough, and greens are like if the Ala Wai course was watered with Ala Wai water but even then would still look better than this place. There's what's supposed to be a pond on the back 9 which looks to be drained of every last drop of water at least 20 years back and is trying to become like an Egyptian desert. I guess the one good thing about this place is that because it looks like Satans hole, it was pretty empty when our group played. read more

Fun course, but the staff is bad. The par-3 course is nice adventure. But the staff isn't good. I called weeks in advance to check if I could get the Hawaii resident rate for military residing in Hawaii, and was told I could. Then I went on memorial day and they told me they weren't giving it anymore. I politely said I understood and thanks anyway and to have a great day - but the staffer just ignored me and looked away and said nothing. Then on hole 6, they turned the sprinklers on the tee box and I got soaked, and my bag and phone got soaked. Then on hole 12, I left my rangefinder and went back like 90 seconds later and a greens keeper had taken it. He did give it back later tho. Then on hole 14 when I was putting they yelled at me to me finish the hole so they could turn those sprinklers on. Seriously abysmal customer service. I'm not interested in paying to be disrespected at a recreational activity, there are lots of courses on the island. read more

Two stars for course condition, zero stars for course management. Show up at 3:15 for a twilight tee time; pay and get to cart and the kid tells me we need to be in by 6:30 and that we're not guaranteed to finish. That's something you lead with, not after I already have my bag loaded. Instead of saying "give me a refund", I decide to have one of the most miserable rounds ever as I'm trying to cram 18 holes into 3 hours. Certainly didn't help no one is on the course marshalling...got to hang behind three goofs who walked on before us. $90 bucks for my son and I to play 16 holes. Would have made it if we could have played till actual twilight, but I guess we're still scared of the COVID at Hawaii Kai golf course. Same goes for the driving range; was out earlier this week and couldn't buy golf balls because we showed up at 6pm. Thankfully, a nice lady gave us her golf balls because she was tired of hitting or my son and I would have been shit out of luck. I used to love using the driving range there, but unfortunately, I've had the ass of this course. They rip off tourists, rip off locals, and have bankers hours. This review is for the Hawaii Kai golf range. It's a decent range, that has overhead protection for the rain and sun. You'll be hitting off of mats, not grass. There's an automated golf ball dispenser and you pay the attendant for the code. The attendant also has some Beverages and things to sell. The range itself is in decent, but not great shape. The assortment of balls that you get is eclectic at best! LOL! It's a decent golf range, not a lot of bells and whistles, but worthwhile if you want to hit a bucket, or warm up before you play either of the Hawaii Kai golf courses. There always seems to be plenty of stalls to hit from, as there has never been a huge crowd when I played here. Parking is abundant, right behind the golf Shack. Also, the golf range is further in from the golf course. Just pull in past the clubhouse, and keep driving to the back and you'll see another golf Shack where the range is located. read more

We played the executive course last week and it was in really rough shape. The greens were horrible, the fairways had lots of dead spots, the cart paths were so bumpy and full of potholes that you could barely drive on them. Our rental clubs were a joke! It was like they went to a garage sale and put a bunch of mis-matched clubs together and called them full sets. My putter had no grip left on it! No way would I ever play here again. read more

This review a strictly for the driving range. The staff is incredibly friendly, $8 for a medium sized bucket of balls that's automatically dispensed from the machine. The balls are a mixture of everything but they're very decent. Now for the driving range, the mats are God awful terrible. Every time you stick a tee in and if you have an awesome drive the tee flies out and backwards. You'll have to go pick it up and stick it back in the three to four holes that someone made in the mats. Best to tell people standing behind you to get out of the way or play dodgeball from the plastic tee. Why the five stars? Because this is probably the only driving range I can hit it over the fence every single time. It strokes my ego and makes me look like Tiger Woods. LOL!!! Today, I had an a-ha moment, I realize that this driving range is probably half the length of other driving range. Which means I'm really not hitting it that far and I still suuuuuck. Tons of parking here, again, I love the super friendly who are always filled with aloha. Also, they have a chipping and putting area right in the entrance area which is honestly, fantastic. This weekend was my first time playing the HK Championship golf course, and it will most likely be my last. Our tee time was at 1:10PM on Saturday, and they close at 6:00PM so I presumed there would be plenty of time to play 18 holes. We promptly started on time, but around hole 4, we started to get backed up due to a family ahead. No big deal. But around hole 7, it was backed up with TWO parties. So now we were really behind schedule. And as expected, the groups behind us started to get backed up too. Fast forward to hole 17. We were putting and finishing up, about to drive to hole 18, but the Marshall (who was a total d*ck) told us it was 5:58PM and we couldn't play the 18th hole because we wouldn't finish by 6:00PM. We explained to him how we started at 1:10PM and were held up by multiple parties, but he didn't care. A model employee for the jerk store. If you look at their website, it says you pay $60 for a 1:10PM tee time, and you get 18 holes. Now I can see if we were goofing around or play like first timers. But that just wasn't the case. We didn't finish because of slower parties ahead, and HK staff refused to acknowledge that. We wanted to finish the last hole. HK said no. We wanted some sort of compensation for not getting to play 18 holes. HK said no. On top of the awful experience with the staff, the course is in horrible condition. I can't believe this is a private course. One of the worst private courses I've played at. Everywhere is patchy, the tee box, the fairway, even the green. Absolutely poor maintenance all around. Save yourself the headache and play at a nicer course with friendlier staff. For $60, there are so many better options on Oahu than this place. read more

I was in the Honolulu Symphony from 1985-88 and every week on our free day, we would walk the Executive par 3 course for $15. The price couldn't be beat, plus it was a Robert Trent Jones course. I had friends galore visiting from the mainland so I would take them here too. It was my first job out of college and we only had a 38-week season ... the rest of the year I was on unemployment insurance, but I was young and this was Hawaii, not Houston, so what was there to complain about? My memories of Hawaii Kai are fantastic and I hope I'll make it out there again. (BTW, wasn't the 17th hole a par 4 back then?) read more

Beautiful Golf Course located in Hawaii Kai just 15 minutes away from Waikiki Honolulu. They have a 9-hole course and also the 18-hole championship course. I played the 18 holes course because it was more challenging for me. The place is sort of strict, no t-shirts and must wear collar shirts. The course was very scenic with narrow tunnels along the path and mountain / ocean views on some holes. All in all, it was a great experience. I give it a tree star cause it's a sweet little location and they have aged facilities and the pro shop pro is not your bro, not friendly not inviting, tired. The only savior is the vintage feel and the other staff is very kind and friendly. We've seen this course at it's best and worse of times and if you are looking for a great golf experience, don't go here. If you are looking for a true Vintage Hawai'i experience then check it out, it tends to be way to expensive for what it's worth if you are just visiting, us locals get a discount and it kinda makes it worth it. We would recommend Turtle Bay, The Pali muni course, Royal Hawaiian, or Hawaiian Prince if you are gonna drop the loot. read more

Horrible service for a $165 no residential course. They ran out of food at the restaurant and snack shop by 1130 on a Saturday. We called and they said they would bring food out when it was made and they never did. Other golfers were also complaining about "tourist season" and not friendly. The course is very dry. If you are military, any other course on the island is better. read more

Made an online tee time for the Executive course for $33 for 18 holes. Got to the pro shop and they charged me $38 and they said that the website was wrong. Got to the starter and she set me up with a cart right away, she said i can go out out. I got to the first tee and a coach (not someone who works at the golf course) came up to me and said they put me along with 3 other groups (not including the how many groups behind of me) in the middle of a high school tournament. They were going to have us wait for another 3 full high school groups to go out and not even say a word to me about it. I go back to the pro shop to see if I can go on their Championship course. They said they could squeeze me in. Then the girl at the pro shop was going to charge me the difference for the course. I thought that was ridiculous so asked her "oh do I have to pay the difference?" And she said I do. I asked for my refund and she hadn't said anything else. Mind you not one of the people that worked at the golf course had said anything to me about a golf tournament at this point until I went back into the pro shop. I went to return the cart and then the starter said "oh yea there's a golf tournament." That's it. No sorry or anything. If they had a golf tournament they shouldn't have made tee times available online, and they should have told me before I went out. I also don't think I should have paid the difference for the courses after they screwed up my tee time majorly (over an hour wait) and also the price for the Executive course! read more

I love golfing here because it's close to my house plus the course is rather nice. The course is right across the beach which is an ideal setting. Now with the Coronavirus you have to golf with 1 cart per person, but if you're like me and jack the ball, then it's good. It's also BYOB because there is no water on the course so they let you bring your own stuff. I like to drink beer when I golf so it was perfect. read more

Visiting from Canada, I had an awesome time here last week with my wife's dad and brother. Course was in pretty good shape, staff were friendly, and the rental clubs were excellent. The non-resident green fee is tough to stomach, but I know it's on-par with other courses on the island. It is what it is. I reserved on hawaiiteetimes.com and it saved us a bit. I'd definitely recommend this place to any buddies looking to get a round in on Oahu. read more

Greens are nice and well kept most of the time but the fairways(can you call dirt and dead grass fairway?) or lack of grass isn't enjoyable. If chipping on hard is your jam, this is heaven, but I prefer to spend $65 somewhere else. WoW. This gold course is really getting old. They need to do lots of repairing and upgrading. The golf path is often uneven and the green is often brown. I think it's still a good place for beginner players though. I think it's because you don't have to worry too much about "ruining" the course. Went to play golf there last week Friday and I have to say, one of the worst golf courses that I have played recently. First off we paid for a weekend rate because it was "Admission Day" here in Hawai'i. Second the fairways are so dry it was like playing on dirt. Unbelievable. I golf Hawaii Kai once a week since it's so close to my house and it's always nice and easy. Never overcrowded and all the employees are extremely nice! The range is nice because they stay open until 10 pm. Don't understand why all these once a year players like to complain about everything. Go play somewhere else then! I would give the Championship Course a 2/5 for condition and challenge level. The back 9 tends to eat me up because I don't play with a slice on my drive. The greens are fast and bumpy and sometimes very brown. The fairways are sometimes indistinguishable from the rough. It could use some TLC. The value would be a 3/5 just based on the Kama'aina rate and availability to get on whenever I want to on my days off. The MAJOR drawback to this course is that they allow groups of all sizes to go out and the marshalls do absolutely nothing about it. The last two times I've played there have been groups of 5 and 6 on the course. That's just unacceptable to play behind and try to maintain any sort of pace. Hawaii Kai and Olomana are on my "do not go" lists now without calling the clubhouse to see how many large groups of locals they've already let on the course. It's a shame because it would be a fun track to get through in under 3 hours. read more

Re Executive Course: some of the cart paths have been re-done with cement but still lots of path bumpy and bus up. But I walk the course anyhow. Good to practice short game. Since it's been rainy had mosquitos near the ditches. Some holes are really spongy grass so you never know what to expect. Fun course though, took about 2.5 hours. I played the all par 3 course and it was an awesome experience. The greens and fairways were not PGA tour quality but check out the ocean views on so many holes. The course layout is challenging with varying lengths and constant elevation changes to keep you on your toes. I paid $120 for 18 holes, rental clubs, a cart, my wife as a ride along and a hat that was on sale. Freakin sweet. The first time I played the 18 there were 3 other groups out there. I paid under $20 to replay and was solo on the course. In under 4 hours I played 36. Absolutely the best value you will find near Waikiki. read more

Have you ever sliced a ball so badly that it went into someone's backyard, or even worse, through their kitchen window?? If you know what I'm talking about, then this review is for you. There are 2 (18 hole) courses here; The Championship 6500yd (5591yd from red tees) and The Executive 2223 yd rolling hill 54 par-3 course. if you actually KNOW how to play golf, play the Championship course here...but too many houses on each fairway make that course off limits for me. I haven't really golfed since I had my kids so it's dangerous to put me back on a real course. This review is only for the Executive (Par 3) course because right now, this is the only course I can play because: 1. Every hole is "par 3". That doesn't matter to me. I still had lots of snowmen... 2. Some holes are 80yds, some are 180yds, and since my driver doesn't go too much farther than that on a good day, I can use every single club, sometimes all on the same hole. 3. There are no houses on ANY fairways on this Executive course. So you can slice away here, however, the thick brush will eat your balls if you blink. Don't even bother looking for your ball or you'll get those pokey things all over your socks. Bring at least 5 or 6 balls (or more!) unless you hit really straight. 4. Kama'aina rate: $10 for weekday after 12noon, $12 for weekday morning play. This has got to be the cheapest round of golf here (only thing cheaper is $8.50 Jungle River putt putt mini-golf). BUT, if you rent a cart here, they'll charge you $10 per person extra. It's pretty steep, so that $10 is worth it. Even our golf cart was struggling up the 12th hole... 5. The conditions of the greens are horrendous, but if you care about these things, you shouldn't be playing this course in the first place. If I get within 1 club length of the hole, it's good in my book. Don't make me putt or we'll be there all day. 6. There's one hole where you tee over a ditch. It's no coincidence it's the 13th hole. Talk about triscadecaphobia. Sometimes I have a better chance if I just throw the ball over the ditch. 7. Stay out of the beach. Those suckers are impossible to get out of. Again, it's easier to pick up the ball and throw it on the green. 8. Driving range...covered stalls are great during the daytime when it's hot, or if you prefer hitting off the grass, go further down and smack away. 9. I didn't see any executives playing on this EXECUTIVE course. Only a bunch of us remedial golfers trying our best to get our balls in order. 10. You can finish in 2-2.5 hrs, even if you don't really know how to golf. Maybe one day I'll be able to play with the real golfers on the other side of the island again, but for now, this is my speed. read more

The Hawaii Kai Championship golf course found along the beautiful eastern coastline of the Island of Oahu is no longer the course I remembered it to be. With obvious signs of neglect and no upgrades to justify the green and cart fees. The once crowded parking area is now full of available open stalls. Clearly reflecting a decline in the course's popularity and an increase in competitive pricing and more courses to choose from.The golf course which was one of my favorite playgrounds of the past has dwindled to nothing more than a high priced Public Links Class course. With all that said and an exception to the fees, the Championship golf course is still a fun place to play. Some of the challenges you'll face here is the more than often strong wind factor and avoiding crashing someone's backyard BBQ(homes come into play throughout the golf course). To save yourself from embarrassment or possible liability it would be a wise choice to play safer and less aggressive shots. Also at this location is an Executive 18 hole Par 3 golf course. A favorite among the beginning golfers community. The driving range has a roofed area with golf mats as well as an open natural grass area. Awkwardly there is a sand bunker practice area a distance away from the driving range and practice putting greens next to the clubhouse. The Pro shop has a very limited selection of items. A modest little restaurant is located next to the Pro shop on the ground floor. Not sure what the second floor is currently being used for or if it's being used at all. Last I remember is that it used to be the main dining area and downstairs was a snack bar. Well anyway, if you're already here, forget the negatives of this review and enjoy your game. A few years ago, before management was recyled, this course was a wonderful retreat from the hot, flat, expensive courses that dot the Ewa Plain. I've played the course ~5 times in the past two years and each time it has gotten steadily worse in multiple aspects. 1. Staff: The management (perhaps as a result of declining sales and (see below) the condition of the course) has been increasingly rude and short-tempered. Giving money to these folks is much more painful than pleasurable (insert mental image here of rabid dog statching food from your hand). Further, they are happy to let their friends and other folks play a) before the course actually opens, and b) in larger groups greater than six persons. The last time I played we reserved the first tee time and were stuck behind a group of 7 people, in 7 carts, and they refused to let us play through. 2. Condition: The course has worsened in all aspects of condition over the past few years. The fairways and rough are pot-marked with invasive weeds and barren dead-zones of dirt and rock. The lakes (retaining ponds) are running dry and now sit like broken reservoirs, filled with trash, gravel, and algae in the middle of the course. And they smell. The greens seem to have never recovered from their last aeration and are rough, uneven, full of weeds, and do not roll true. 3. Price: After all said above the course still charges more than KOOLAU!!!!!!! Some of the nicest courses in the state are cheaper than this! You can play the pro-caliber courses on Maui, Lanai, and N. Shore Oahu for cheaper than this on any given day as a Kama'aina. If you are desperate to play on the SE corner of Oahu just drive around to Olomana. The course is much nicer than this place and the staff is much more friendly. I play all over the State---if I play here again in the next five years it will have been too soon. read more

We tried to rent only one set of clubs instead of two, since my wife mainly just wanted to enjoy the golfcart ride but the guy rudely said we couldn't. We he forced us to rent two set of clubs, we heard him speaking to his colleague over the radio saying they didn't have any left-handed, women's clubs... what kind of golf course doesn't own the basics? He mumbled into the radio away from us to "...just grab a men's set for her." Sorry, but if you are going to force me to rent women's clubs but give me men's for a price x2 as much as I was told online, I will walk out... which is exactly what I did. This is a par-3 course, this means that you have to hit the ball in less than three strokes. Cart rentals are available, but decided to go pro style and walked all 18 holes! Good cardio and doable, too. Finished in less than three hours, but can be less if you are good! This was my first time here and playing at a course. I was pleasantly surprised that golf can be fun! As I step on to the green and teed off the first hole, I was overwhelmed of how many more I would have to do to finished all 18. But the course showed itself to be easy to navigate and with the help of my wonderful BF, he was the reason it was fun while learning some golf etiquettes!! read more

So I'm a frequent visitor to different driving ranges & I have finally mustered up the courage to play on an actual course. For a first timer I had so much fun. I went with 2 of my friends who actually know what they're doing & we all had a great time. There are 2 different courses to choose from: the par 3 & the actual course. We stuck with the par 3. We went around 7:45 on a Saturday morning & it wasn't too crowded, just a few groups in front of us. I was able to rent clubs since I didn't have my own set which was great! The grass isn't as green as most courses, but I didn't mind at all. There are about 3 water jugs filled with ice water around the course which are perfect to fill up your hydroflask & stay hydrated. Even though we went early towards the end of the day we were sweating. This is a great place to come if it's your first time or if you just want to have fun! I will be back hopefully very very soon to improve my golf game! read more
