This is a review of the golf course restaurant. This is a wonderful lunch place even for the non-golfer like me! The staff is very friendly and helpful with menu selections. On the day I went, they didn't have French fries as an option that is listed on the menu. If I recall, that was the case several months ago when I went there. But not to be at all disappointed when I was given a really delicious mixed green salad with fresh strawberry slices and craisins with a very yummy salad dressing. It was the more nutritious choice, so even though it was my plan B, it'll be my plan A option next time! Back to my entree. I had the loco moco. It came with a generous hand-made burger with brown gravy and a scoop of brown/white rice. The sunny side egg was perfectly cooked. I had some of the fish sandwich too. It was just as delicious as the last 2 times I got it. The fish was a thick slice that was lightly egg battered. The brioch bun was so soft and tasty. I loved that there was tomato and lettuce on it. A deluxe fish sandwich! I really like it! They were setting up for a private event with cloth covered chairs. Maybe a good idea to look into that for a future event. The restaurant is set up with a few chairs, a side room that was set up with long tables with chairs, and there's a bar with several bar stools. I've not ever seen the bar empty. I was born in the islands, but moved away when I was 10. I miss being here, and often wonder what my life would be like had we stayed. As the fates would have it, I am lucky enough to return to Oahu each year and stay for extended periods. They say everyone yearns for their childhoods, and that you can't really go back. Smarter people than I have said we all do this on some level, because yearning for those simpler times offers emotional comfort and safety. (*Read this next part like a nerdy social scientist: "The childhood home often represents a place of unconditional love and safety, a stark contrast to the complexities of adulthood. The feeling is that of, "going home" to a sanctuary that cannot be found elsewhere. " This place... Moanalua Golf Club, is a place that matches pretty closely to my romanticized memories of my youth. My time there yesterday was a "time-travel-reconnection" to how I recall a more-simpler time growing up in Hawaii. In short...I loved everything about my visit to Moana Golf, and savored each special layer of Aloha that revealed itself to me. The course is the oldest in the Hawaiian islands. That, in itself, makes it worthy of placement on a golfer's bucket list. But in addition to its history, the course was fun. It's 9 holes, but I played it twice and on the 2nd trip around, with my knowledge of the dangers that lurk on each hole, I navigated the course, "mo-bettah, dis time." (that's the pidgin English, that I used to speak fluently, starting to come out.). The green fees are very reasonable, and the putting surfaces were really well cared for. The fairways have suffered from the recent drought and are dry, but they turned my 200 yd drives into 240 yd drives--so, "No monku frum me, Brah. Bumbai, my scoar-card...all choke wid da kine pars, yah?" (translation: "I'm not complaining, brother. By the time I finished, my score card had quite a few pars."). Not a speck of trash was to be found on the course. I always see this as evidence that the people who are involved with such places make the effort to give, "special-kine care" to keeping a place as nice as possible. In my memorized version of Hawaii, this special-care for places was part of one's kuleana, (Hawaiian for responsibility) and it results in a reciprocal love between places and its inhabitants. The best part of my visit here revolved around the people I encountered. The pace of life seems to be one from a by-gone era. It felt like coffees and da News-pay-pah were enjoyed before heading off into the day, Kindness and friendliness, in the form of the Aloha-spirt drips and flows here. It is not un-like the deep and velvety aroma that rises from pikake garlands. I would quickly find out that the hole* place was filled with a positive vibe.(*I intentionally misspelled, "hole" as an inside wink/playfulness. Translations of, "Moanlua" say that it means, "a pocket or hole". It can also mean a place where travelers can rest.) My visit here made me feel like I had found a pocket of, "1970's-style/ easy-paced/ old-school Hawaii-hospitality and vitality". As soon as I popped the trunk to grab my clubs, I started to feel the aloha energy that sits in this "pocket" of specialness. While pulling the trunk down to close it, felt a cool breeze pass. The course is located in a wide valley, and a gentle flow of cooler air seemed to always be on tap. I heard the waitress from the adjoining diner laughing with a patron. Apparently, something had been left behind on the diner's table and she was returning it. They carried on a playful conversation using the local dialect of English. I smile every time I hear it spoken. Hearing it brings me back to younger days. The starter was hilarious (he was professional and caring, but he splashed in a playfulness that got the round off to a good start). The golfing members of the club whom I interacted with on the fairways and near the club house shared a welcoming energy.--cracking jokes and speaking to me like I was Hoapili (close friend). The grounds-staff who were mowing and cutting shrubs were helpful and almost-overly respectful (more than once, they stopped their tasks, moved way-off the course to ensure they were not in our lines of sight, and then they gave, "shaka" signs and sincere smiles after our hits. "Oh, da kine, good wan! Chee hoo!". One example that kind-a stands out for me happened when I pulled into the parking lot's driveway. It's a bit narrow, and as fate would have it, a car was attempting to pull out, just as I was attempting to pull in. The driver, (who, I could not see, for the sun was shining on his windshield) without hesitation, pulled back to allow me to pass. We exchanged side-window shakahs of thanks and, "Aʻole pilikia" ("No big thing)... but, these kinds of small gestures can be a big thing in our lives of fast-paced living. I have a feeling that this is the norm in this place of refuge. In a word, this place is: Puanani. read more

This is so near to my work place. Parking is easy and getting a table is the same. The staff is very friendly and professional. The food is delicious, it was a little disappointing that they were out of fries, but the salad was tasty, and better for my health. lol. My burger was so filling that I didn't have room for dessert, but my friends had the lava cake and it came with two scoops of ice cream! It was funny because as we left the large table of golfers( must be regulars) all gave us a pleasant send off. We will definitely be back- as it is so convenient. This place is a hidden little gem. I come here for twilight and can get through 9 holes in a hour and 20 mins. It's extremely affordable and also the oldest course in Hawaii. Beautiful views and the staff here is amazing as well. I never book my tee time. I just show up and they always manage to squeeze me in even if they're busy. Great place all around with a rich history. If you're in Hawaii and want to golf on a budget, this place won't disappoint. read more

Quality food, good prices and super attentive friendly customer service! So happy this place is open again and still serving onolicious food and affordable prices. The club house is open to the public and has been renovated! Friday special was oxtail soup! Served with rice and ginger on the side! Cannot beat the turkey clubhouse sandwich with fries or salad! My son chose the hot dog with fries! We were pleasantly surprised he got. It just one but TWO hot dog sandwiches and they serve the Redondo red hot dog!! Locals k let you can't beat that! The clientel are local retired peeps and the atmosphere is friendly and casual! Kerry is so friendly friendly and treats all the customers with care! Located off Ala Aolani St in Honolulu my mom's cousin is a member here so after the service we all came here for lunch. They only had one cook today so orders for 20 plus and other members who were there and coming in all had to wait. I got the Valley Breakfast which was two eggs , choice of meat and choice of starch. It was not bad at all. The service was excellent they were as quick as they was taking orders and bring out the food. Overall not a bad experience and a great lunch with family read more

$35 for a game with a cart is cheap for 9 holes and reasonable. However, when my golf cart broke down on the 4th hole I tried calling 20 times the golf club (the phone numbers on the score card and the numbers on the internet) all numbers were out of service! So I am waiting for 10 minutes with a hope that some worker would drive by and notice me but nope so decided to walk the remaining 5 holes. No worker noticed me till the very last hole. I told him that my cart broke down and the numbers provided are out of service and asked for refund of $10, he said no. I think that's unfair. I decided not to argue with an older gentleman over $10. Conclusion. I understand broken carts, yeah that's expensive to replace, but not having a working phone to call in and tell the Starter or somebody so that they can give me a working cart is so inadequate and lousy. read more

Came here for an event in the main building and it was beautiful. Facilities were clean and tidy. Location is easy to find using Google Maps as its right at the entrance of Moanalua Valley. Lots of parking available, both on the property and out on the street. The lawn to golf on is green and huge. Never knew this place existed until today! Will be back! read more

The place was very laid back and chill. No crowds or groups to worry about. I came in on a Saturday afternoon so it was perfect nobody was there. I had no equipment and they were so nice, they let me borrow a club set, a glove, tees and balls. All at no charge. I was so happy. The terrain was not so green and the grass could be greener, the mud and grass were mixed and some grass wilted but overall it was a good par 4 kind of place. You definitely needed a cart, which made the whole thing even more enjoyable. Overall great time. The ratings are just for the greens as they were not so green but the place was perfect for beginners who have done many rounds of par 3s as some holes were double in length. Still good but no longer a decent value. They made it $30 for walking! It's still a nice walk and the greens are not bad. I like the elevated greens but the fairways are almost always muddy. Still a challenging course but I can play twice at Makalena or 18 at another muni course. Too bad. read more

I've been meaning to try this course out for awhile. Heard about it on the radio recently and called to get rate info. I walked the course for exercise and boy is it a workout. Similar to Hawaii Country Club in many ways, both are similar in being the oldest courses on Oahu. The fairways seemed pretty long and wide. Lots of variety in elevation. However the ground is pretty hard everywhere, no divots. Some tee boxes were hard to push my tee in. Gotta look for a sandy spot. Good thing is no sand traps. Couple stream crossings. It was very windy I'm guessing it's like this a lot. So you hit into the wind half the time. That being said, the ball carries far when you have the wind at your back. The restaurant/bar wasn't open unfortunately. Heard good things about it so we'll be back if the rates stay reasonable. read more

This is a review of the restaurant only, as I'm not a member because I never learned to golf, but you don't have to be a member to eat here! I've eaten here twice, and while the restaurant outside is fairly non-descript, the food and the prices more than make up for it. Large quantities, and it looked like everything was under $10, but I'd better go back one more time to make sure! :) I've gotten the basic breakfast in the past, with 2 eggs, BACON, and tater tots (my FAVE!) and it was totally delish. This time, Altho bfast is available all day, I got the club sandwich WITH tater tots (yay, tots!) and it was SO GOOD but I could only finish half of the generous 4 stacks. FILLED with crispy bacon, turkey, lettuce & juicy ripe tomatoes (& mayo), they were all yummy, crispy bites. Coupled with the crunchy tater tots...perfection. First time playing at Moanalua Golf course yesterday and had so much fun! We loved the causal local style environment where everybody plays with aloha and is cool and easy going. Unlike uptight, snooty courses that have a marshal or another group up your behind making you rush and play "ready golf", Moanalua Golf course is super chill on purpose. We met the general manager who shared he is purposely creating this friendly atmosphere to create memorable golf experiences. He explained, the best golf courses he played were those he has fond memories with good friends. He describes the course as a beginner course, which I can understand since it's only 9 holes and so inexpensive to learn and practice. I would argue that it is also a course for serious golfers who want to get as much rounds in as possible to up their game. Our friend who is a member earned a spot to play in a PGA game and we watched some really great players pass us on the course, including an amazing 11 year old Punahou girl playing all by herself. Eight of us went there after work with a member to make our own happy hour on the course. Let's just say it's much better than sitting at a bar or drinking at home and healthier too! They have some crazy ridiculous membership deal that seemed too good to be true. I don't want to repeat it here because it was so good that I think I must have heard it wrong (something like one membership includes your entire family as well as a designated partner and you can bring friends too)? I thought maybe they make their money on renting the golf carts, but that didn't cost much either. Anyway, I highly recommend Moanalua Golf Club memberships for newbies who don't want to be rushed or stressed to play, experienced golfers who want to practice versus just hitting balls at a range, and groups of friends who want a great pau hana spot! It looks like it needs a face lift, but don't let that discourage you from eating. The staff is always friendly and you can tell who the regulars are. The food has lots of flavor and the portions are good sized. Their plates come with rice, mac or toss, and a hot vegetable (usually corn). I have two "go to" dishes. The first, hamburger steak, with white rice, mac salad, and I add mushrooms. The second is the bbq chicken with the same choices. I love their consistency with flavor and portion. My wife and I haven't been to the Moanalua Golf Club restaurant in at least a year but dined here this cold morning. We usually come for lunch which I recommend because the prices are good and the food is tasty. This morning I ordered the saimin for $8. The broth was good and the are very generous with the toppings, especially the char siu. My only complaint is that they use ramen noodles instead of saimin noodles, but it was still good. My wife had their breakfast special, scrambled egg with sweet bread French toast and a slice of ham. My wife's only complaint was that the ham was too thin and hard. I remember that they used a better quality ham in the past. I recommend this place for anytime dining, they have great appetizers and cheap beer. read more

Moanalua Golf Club is a 9 hole course tucked in the beginning of Moanalua valley near Kaiser Hospital. I hadn't ever had the desire to play there because it's 9 holes and I was always under the impression that you needed to be a member. It turns out you don't need to be a member, the course is open to the public, so off I went. The layout of the course is interesting, some elevated tees, and greens, the condition is a little rough, as what you would expect from an older course that hasn't been taken care of all that well. I can deal with all of that IF the price is right. To play 9 holes here and ride shouldn't be more than $20 at most. I paid $28 during twilight on a weekday and I thought that was extremely steep. There are very nice courses on this island where twilight is $35 on a weekend. For what I paid for 9 holes, I'd expect the 18 hole price to be $50-60 and that's not right for the quality of the course. The best thing I can say about this course is the staff, and other players were extremely nice. The gentlemen on the phone when I called to make a tee time was very friendly. As was the woman working the starters desk when I showed up. The walkers on the course let me pass because I was playing quick, which was nice. Overall I could see myself playing here after work out of convenience if it was priced right to match the quality, but I don't think I'll be playing here again. read more

This is Part Two of my "Moanalua-A-Day" neighborhood exploration. Been here several times for happy hour and am always pleased with the friendly service, cheap prices and good food. The ambiance isn't bad either: "Talk story" with the local clientele, watch the Golf Channel on HD or just zone out on the green, studying swing styles. Breakfast here is a find and very reasonable. I had the Moanalua Special of two pieces French Toast, two eggs and a ham steak: All for $6.75. My friend had the Corn Beef Hash & eggs with breakfast potatoes: All for $7.25. Add coffee to that and you have a complete breakfast to last your day. Come treat yourself to some valley ambiance! Tip: No need to be a member. But remember: No tank tops! Sleeve t-shirts or polos only. Fun Facts: 1) Built in 1898, the nine-hole Moanalua Golf Club was the first golf course built in Hawai'i. Located near the Honolulu International Airport and downtown Honolulu, legendary aviatrix Amelia Earhart actually once landed her plane on this course. 2) Golfers can get in 18 holes on this layout by playing from two different sets of tees. The huge fairway on the par-4 third hole looks big enough to host a polo match which is exactly what it once did in the days of horse-drawn carriages. 3) The two closing holes, the par-3 No. 8 and the par-4 No. 9, offer an outstanding end to a round. Hitting from an elevated tee, the eighth hole requires pinpoint accuracy. The ninth requires accuracy more than length. A deep stream bed runs across the landing area well short of the green. I'm am woe to do this, but I must downgrade my review of Moanalua Golf Club. Over the years since I wrote my original review, the management of MGC has made many changes to their menu. From my perspective; none of them were for the better. The first change they made was to replace their awesome breakfast potatoes with tater tots. Why! Why would you do that? After several years and many breakfasts with me and probably others asking them just that, they have bravely stuck with their damn tater tots. Since then, I watched each menu change result in at least one less item I would frequently order being no longer available. The latest change which sent me here to downgrade my review was the termination of the soup of the day which you could choose as your side. This great idea/option is now gone, and so is their 4th star. I still go to my valley restaurant. The people are friendly, and the beer is cold. I can still get a pretty good meal, but not as good as it use to be and not good enough to warrant that 4 star. read more

Greens are in great shape however the fairways aren't groomed at all. You can hit a nice shot down the middle of the fairways but because the grass is so tall you can't find your ball. I guess for $23 you can't expect much. read more

Just finished playing this nine hole course twice. Yes, it is an old course, and no, don't expect conditions like the premium courses on this island. However, it is a fun test of golfing skills. Bring a few extra golf balls. Expect wind in the afternoon. The fairways and greens (as far as I can tell) are Bermuda. Once you get used to the speed of the greens, they play pretty true. I ran across no big breaks or long carries. The first hole needs a good shot from the blue - not a problem from the white. I played the white tees into the wind and blue tees with the wind. The eight is a par 3 from an elevated tee. I would (and will) play it again. read more

Probably the best pancakes I've had. Not sure what they do to it but they're airy and fluffy yet have a consistently good chew. Very good pancakes. I don't normally order pancakes but I do here because it's so good. They also have great home made corned beef hash. Order it crispy with eggs and rice. Can't beat it here...especially if you live in Moanalua Valley or the Salt Lake area. read more

Yummy breakfast! Fast and friendly service! When I moved to the Moanalua area, I desperately searched for a good place to eat breakfast. My friend suggested I try out this golf club. Since you don't have to be a member, so I drove right to it! I've only been here for breakfast so that is the only thing I can comment on. They have the usual items, fried rice, eggs, corn beef hash, loco moco, etc. All that I have tasted are great! Not too expensive either. My plate was too big for me to finish so my hubby had to help me. The servers are always friendly and my water is always filled to the top. There is also a lot of parking and a lot of seating inside. I never leave disappointed and always leave full! I might try coming back later on in the day. I hear they have a pretty good happy hour! read more

Came here years ago for a meeting. This is a Nice golf course hidden in the Moanalua Valley. The club house restaurant is on the second floor and has daily specials. The daily special today was Braised Short Ribs but I ordered the Roast Pork with gravy (which is on the daily entree menu). It came with sautéed mushrooms and a generous portion of tender, juicy roast pork. It was delicious and will definitely be back here. read more

I was having the most horrible day on Tuesday so my gf and I went to get a drink, but didn't know where. We yelped a place nearby and found this little secret hideaway. It felt so homey, and felt like a total local town. Our server Keri was the bomb dot com. She treated us like royalty man! We ordered the garlic fries, soy beans and rib eye steak dinner. Food hit the spot! (On top of my two beers). Keri hooked up some poke and free brownies at the end of our meals. If it wasn't for her, I would've never thought I had a bad day! This place is meh. I was not impressed. However, I will say I only tried this place once and I only tried one meal. I will try this place for drinks and football so look forward to a forthcoming updated review! My daughter and I showed up around 8:30 on a Sunday morning. Three large parties were just finishing up and we were the only people there. I ordered a pretty basic meal- fried rice with egg. The fried rice was boring. I love friend rice when it is nice and hearty and flavored with the meat it is cooked with. Well, the fried rice on this day was not impressive in any way. The waitress was not very attentive as my cup of water was empty for a while. She seemed busy filling cup up for golf club members who stopped by (which I totally get). If you happen to be in the Moanalua Valley area, the food in the restaurant is surprisingly good. While you can expect the sort of diveyness that everyone really has in mind with golf club restaurants-- old men, lots of old men, swearing, beer bottles all over the tables, sporting events on the television, the food is not to be missed. You can check the monthly calendar to see what the specials are. They offer a wide range of local style dishes. Some of the best things, I've had here were the kalbi, special only, and the hamburger steak. I wouldn't say that anything here is really unique, they're definitely not serving things you wouldn't easily be able to find anywhere else, but that hasn't stopped me from coming back. read more

Restaurant closed after Covid started (2020). I called in June (2021) to check when the restaurant will reopen. I was told that it would reopen in July (2021) since it's undergoing renovations. Our class of 71 Waipahu held a golf tournament there then turned the 19th hole into a Christmas Party, Restaurant did an awesome job in providing everyone's dinner order in a timely manner, satisfying their hunger as well as everyone's thirst. The dinning room adequately fit approximately 75 of us... recommend all groups to check it out even just for lunch or early dinner, food is tasty, loved the oxtail soup.
