Honestly the range is decent. Most of the balls are good and you don't need to save food balls for your driver. Mats are decent but if there could be some yardages it could be even better. $14 fir a very large bucket of balls...okay, inflation has kicked in and I'm okay with that. What I'm not too happy about: --very few mats had any life left in them. It's hard to hit irons off the bare spots. (as of December 16, 2024) --how about hosing off the mud at night or early in the morning so that the mats aren't soaked with mud when patrons arrive? Every time you hit the mat, you're splashing mud and your clubs are getting coated in mud. Not ideal, but then, there aren't many other driving ranges nearby. read more

Functional. Obviously there are world class practice facilities around the world and this is not one of them, but it serves it purposes. You do hit off the mat and there are a bunch of bays. The chipping area behind the driving area is OK. The greens are not very good, but it serves its purpose. The staff was very friendly with Junko greeting me with a smile and very helpful. I visited the island and did not have any clubs on me, but there are some clubs that they allow you to use for free. Not the greatest but functional again. Just started to pick up golf again and need to get the swing back. I avoided Ala Wai driving range thinking it would always be crowded but depending when you go it's very convenient and not crowded at all. We've been going about 4 in the afternoon and a few times at night. It's $14 for a large bucket and $8.50 for a small. The balls are good and the mats are nice. They also have a decent putting area where you can chip. Only complaint is the wind lol....and I wish they had a few more targets to zero in the range of your shots. My friend and I decided to go hit some balls because we couldn't make a hike in the rush hour traffic. I have never in my life picked up a real golf club and neither of us really knew what we were doing. Going into the golf club itself was a bit confusing as there wasn't much signage and we weren't clear on where to go to purchase balls or rent clubs. Once we figured out it was a separate building down the path we got our balls and clubs, not a bad price for an afternoon activity! We didn't get much support or advice in the store on how to pick clubs or what the different ones are used for but we had a good time and the folks our practicing their legit golf skills were friendly. read more

The last time I actually hit a golf ball was October 2019. Stuff happened since then, and it's still happening. Golf is not like riding a bike. It's not something that just comes back immediately. Practice, practice, and more practice! After nearly two years, I definitely needed to practice before taking on the golf course. It was a Sunday morning, and the driving range was very busy. I brought my own practice balls that I got from someone, and good thing I did because I seen the photos of the gnarly, roughed up, yellow golf balls on Yelp, and seeing them in person looked even worse. The setup is nice with plenty of space to put your golf bags. The mat is thick, so any errant golf swings into the ground wouldn't damage your clubs too bad. :) The worst part is the range itself. There are no distance markers at all, and it's pretty much all dirt. It looked rough. This was actually my first time at this driving range as it's not the closest to me, and being dubbed the "busiest golf course in the world," I tend to avoid places like that. Though, I believe that was in the 80s. Overall, it's pretty much your typical, no frills, driving range. Grip it and rip it. I really, really hope the City is still partnering with Top Golf to upgrade and update the driving range. It'll be the best thing!! read more

Several times this week they close down the shop to pick up golf balls, instead of being proactive and gathering balls constantly and refilling the machine. Customers are asked to wait 45 mins to an hour for more balls. Someone needs to fix this issue or train their staff better. read more

Balls are on the expensive side compared to other ranges ($14 for ~75 balls), but you're paying for the location. Friendly staff. View is decently for the location. There is a putting green but they sometimes close it without notice. I'd avoid 4-6pm as they're the busiest during this window and it's hard to get a stall. While a bare bones, muni golf range, we just wanted to hit some golf balls and did NOT have clubs. The range "shop" has a bunch of old clubs you can use for free (just give them your ID) - the clubs were crap but hey, they were free and did the job. A large bucket is $14, which seemed ok, but I haven't golfed in years. Lots of stations, all matted though, you have to bring your own rubber tee (they also sell for $3 but many mats had them laying around). Good way to kill an hour if you're visiting and looking for a change. read more

For $68 dollars they'll give you a mismatch set of clubs that don't match your game - then tell you afterwards, they did have better suited clubs but they aren't really golfers so they didn't know???? Checked out Ala Wai Driving range on 6/28/18 Thursday, it was my first time there to actually HIT GOLF BALLS at the driving range. It's a decent driving range, it would be nice if there was some type of SHADE area specially where the benches are, next to the area where you hit the balls. Prices of GOLF BALLS, I got the LARGE BASKET of GOLF BALLS which cost $8.00 Parking * They have lots of parking near by next to the driving range area, and if I'm not wrong seems like their making more parking stalls as if June 28, 2018 One thing I wish they could fix or try to check upon is the ENTRANCE and EXIT road up leading to the GOLF COURSE and DRIVING RANGE, The road is so messed up with lots of POT HOLES. I mean it's WAIKIKI so the ROAD should be fixed up ASAP. Tourist will look at it as a negative thing. In My opinion. read more

This was an awesome (and somewhat nerve racking) family night with the kids - ages 5, 7, 9, 12, 13, and 14. Something for everyone. We scored some out of the way stalls on the very end of the range because we knew the kids would be a little louder than hard core golfers may prefer. The great news is there's plenty of stalls and no shortage of weekend warriors perfecting their craft. In the span of 90 minutes we've seen the tour hopeful to Sam shanks-alot. It's a chill judgment free zone. The large buckets were quite affordable at $8.00 each. Head into the office which takes credit cards for your claim ticket for balls. The range is well lit and open past 9:00pm. The kids LOVED ending the night with a putting contest on the greens. There's 7 holes to hone your putting game in the putting green. Even on a clear Friday night it wasn't overly crowded. Great family night and fun for parents and kids. TIP: you can put a $2.00 cash hold to grab a tee if you've forgotten one, or you can also leave your picture ID. read more

As one of the proclaimed busiest courses in America I wonder where the profit (if any) goes? Range is open from 6am-9pm. Non peak times 1/3 of the stalls are filled. During peak times, there's a long line to enter the facility. No honor or pride on this range as most if not all are dated back to the 1950s (including their balls). You'll be luck to have (10) balls with full dimples. Surprisingly their range mats are excellent. Smaller than normal but it does the job. A few stalls are uneven but so what. Lots of wind so you'll practice your punch/knockdowns here. More cons are no targets or yardages to mounds. Staff was ok. Shop was very limited to none. So much potential here yet no one cares to make this place great. read more

I wanted to let everyone know that power trip still exist in Hawaii. Today, I went to the driving range with two buddies who wanted to learn how to play golf. So, I figure it would be best to go to the range and have them hit some balls. Then comes Mr. Jonathan Strait who introduces himself as the Director of Golf and tell me that I am not allowed to give pointers to my buddies and that made him look bad. He was "worried" that I was giving lessons, which I was not. He finally left us alone by saying I was not allowed to be within the yellow line for safety, which I complied. But this is to show you that because someone has a title, they tend to get big head. Not too friendly and local...well, he is not a local guy, as we all know. read more

Nothing fancy, just a good ole driving range and it does the job if you need to blow off some steam or practice your shots. The great thing about Ala Wai driving range is they're open until midnight. Last buckets of balls are sold at 11PM and lights out at 11:45PM. They take credit cards for balls and can also rent you a plastic tee for $2. You get your $2 back when you return it. They also rent out old drivers and irons if you like. The putting green is nicely manicured. read more

Reviews prior to the takeover of the operation of the driving range by Junior Golf on March 4, 2022, may have been true, but are no longer relevant. The range now has new mats, new balls, new range eqipment and friendly competent staff. It has generally been spruced up. The price for balls has increased, but since the profits go to Junior Golf, one does not feel bad about paying to support a worthy cause. There is still room for improvement such as making it a social activity with shade, benches etc. Also distance markers would improve the experience. Compared to the former ratty operation, the driving range is now a real asset. read more

I never knew golfing was this much fun until we came here! We have never really golfed before and often viewed it as boring etc but we decided to try the range as we were recommended it to pass some time and have some fun! We got 2 large baskets which cost 16$ which actually quite a while to go through. The range is in pretty good condition but sadly lacks any shade as you play in the hot sun. Everyone there is very profession throughout the day and you are taken care of accordingly. Sadly they do not have any tees to hit off of during this time and no clubs you can use so you do have to bring your own. I will back back! What a blast. read more

This is a super convenient location. Very close to most everything on the town side. You can buy the bucket of 75 balls for $8, or 50 balls for $6. They open very early, at 6 a.m. which is great for the main reason that this location doesn't get more stars: It cooks during the day, It gets so hot and humid during the day, because there is no shade at all. They really need some kind of covering. Even at 8 a.m., it's uncomfortable due to the heat and humidity. You can step into the office where you get the balls, and enjoy their AC when you get hot though :-) You'll be hitting off of mats, and if you don't bring your own tee, they will loan you one if you leave a form of ID. I recommend going on Amazon and buying a pack of three different size plastic tees for the mats, for about $3. Much more convenient. The range markers are at 50 yards, 100 yards, 150 yards, 200 yards. Recently they added grass Mounds at each range marker, making it easier to see the exact location of your ball. The balls are pretty junk for the most part, but not horribly so. There is a soda machine where you can get a beverage, but if you want anything more you have to go to the restaurant at the main Golf Course. They finally opened the putting green, which is a nice addition. There's no chipping green though :-( There's an abundance of parking, right in front of the driving range. Or if you prefer, you can park over by the golf course and restaurant, come over to the driving range and hit a bucket of balls before starting your round. All in all it's great to have a driving range so close. It's better in some ways and worse than others than the Hawaii Kai range or the one on the windward side. If I could, I would give this no stars. I used to be regular at the range when it was under old management. Back then was affordable and organized. However, I was highly disappointed because I went there at 6:30pm to hit some balls but they said no sales after 6pm because they close at 7pm. I couldn't even golf. Plus the price for the balls was a rip off. It was $6.50 for half a small bucket and $8 ($7.50 + $0.50 donation) for a small bucket. Was not even close to the amount of balls the old Ala Wai range had for a small bucket. Used to be $6 for a small bucket of near 60 balls and a large for $8 for about 80 balls. Plus there was no organization. Buckets and balls left all over the place in the stalls and no one watching the slots so no one was staying safely behind golfers. People were standing in other stalls watching their friends and right behind the golfer. Very unsafe. Definitely won't be going back. It's more of a money maker than trying to keep the sport alive. read more

The hours for this place is so unpredictable! One night I went there at 8:00 pm and the driving range is already closed but the website stated the close hour is at 9:30 pm. Today I went at noon to hit some balls and it wasn't open yet. Again, the open hour for it is at 11:00 am. The city should revoke the contract of this operator! The phone number doesn't work. Today we decided to work on our golf game at the Ala Wai Driving Range. I called ahead just to be sure they were open since today was a holiday. The lady who quickly answered the phone was nice and very helpful. She said they were opened and to come on down. Again, Very Nice! Not sure why people are LYING and saying this Driving Range is anything other than a 1 or 2 star!! I only go there because its the ONLY driving range in town. The "service" could NOT be worse. Its a driving range...yet the groundskeeper guy that looks homeless and makes a snail look like Usain Bolt apparently refuses to pick up the "golf balls/jawbreakers" until there's only one bucket of balls left in the entire dispensing machine?? The whole process is BUSCH LEAGUE! The lady behind the counter is mean most days, polite some days. The golf balls are used until they literally look like huge yellow marbles...yet they charge $8 for a large bucket. The hitting mats are beat to heck too...as if they dont see how ghetto they have the place looking. Oh...and nice putting green that has ZERO holes!!! Its the NORM to show up at any given moment to see a LONG LINE of people waiting to get balls, cuz Slow Poke Rodriguez is pickin up balls as slowly as humanly possible or someone behind the counter just LEAVES THEIR POST, throws up another sign on the door that has about 50 signs on it already to go take a lunch or bathroom break, instead of having Slow Poke or someone else fill in behind the counter during the break! The tractor used to pick up the balls is lucky to have been made after 1980...and once broke down in the middle of the field and customers had to help push the scrap iron off of the hitting field!!! Stop RAPING the community with this incredibly poorly ran driving range! No way its the 2nd best Driving Range in the Hononlulu area. Its #15 on a top 10 list AT BEST!!! Ive NEVER seen a more poorly ran and unprofessional driving range IN MY 49 YEARS OF LIFE. Obnoxious groundskeepers/helpers randomly SCREAMING and laughing like some wild animals...balls that have not been replaced in YEARS obviously...and Slow Poke who gets off on NOT pickin up the balls until there's none left to hit and the line is as long as at the DMV!! The ONLY REASON why I go there is because...wait for it...there's nowhere else to go!! in the area. This place is the definition of RIP OFF.
