We rented some plain ol' pedal powered bikes for the day, and they were total crap. The frame and…read morebrakes were fine, but the shifters clearly hadn't been adjusted in years and the chain was probably an original and skipped all over. They kept shifting out of gear when you didn't want them to (climbing) and not shifting when you needed them to. I said something to the staff when we returned and they just made an excuse about being impossible to stay on top of maintenance when people "abuse" the bikes. My bike even had a seat post that wouldn't lock in - so about 5 miles away from the shop and it had slid down all the was to the frame - I was climbing hills in a bike that wouldn't downshift and a seat about 5 inches too low. The shop knew the post bracket had one stripped nut when they were adjusting it for me, and tightened the other one mightily - but it wasn't sufficient. We got by and made it back safely after putting about 15 miles on them - including a miserable climb to diamond head trailhead. I'm sure these guys have a great business with things like scooters and other more popular items, so I'll avoid giving one star - but they should not send people out on the crap bikes they have. I implore them - just don't advertise renting regular bikes if you can't maintain them at a bare minimum usable level - take them off the menu.

We contacted the owners and got a quick response from the company. When we arrived at the rental, we were met by Bryan and Mary who both were very knowledgable about the Spyder and told us everything we needed to know. My gf and I were looking for a 1-2 day moped rental and found this place while strolling down…read moreWaikiki (looks like they have a duplicate location in a different part of Waikiki). I got to say that I was pretty pleased with the overall experience. Admittedly, the mopeds were not new (most had ~6,000mi on them) and had some wear & tear (the horn didn't work on one of them, speedometer was busted on one of them, fuel gauge was busted on one of them, etc.), BUT otherwise they worked fine and we had no problems touring around downtown, Tantalus, Diamond Head, Punchbowl, etc. The guy quoted 90mpg but I think it was probably more like 60-70mpg, not bad, regardless. Cost was $1/hr, so $24 for a full day + ~$6-8 tax (optional insurance, which we declined, was ~$6). When we returned it the guy offered a 2nd day for only $20 (+tax) so apparently there might be some room to haggle and get multi-day discount). most of the other places look to advertise $25-35/day (plus fees), so I figured this was a decent deal. A different reviewer noted problems with them charging her for damage without her knowing after she returned it, so I made sure to meticulously document any damage (mostly scratches) already on the bikes. We didn't have any problem returning it (just make sure to fill the gas when you get back). In retrospect it's probably not a bad idea to take quick phone pics of the bike to have extra documentation what damage was/wasn't there when you picked them up. With respect to service, Ladell was super friendly and laid back, and I think it was Blake that helped us return it. Overall it was a great experience, minus one star for the very-used, slightly busted bikes. I'll definitely consider renting from them again next time I'm here.
