    Galapagos sharks

I started out saying I was just going to go on the boat for a ride, but my friend booked me the full experience. I'm so glad she did. It's a little intimidating at first - as you hook onto the cage and it's the open ocean...and there are waves..I crawled into the cage and was just going to hang out and not put my head under - because you know, waves and sharks and all the fears. I'm so glad I did - it was epic and something I will remember the rest of my life! Highly recommend it. If you get sea sick though, be sure to get Dramamine in before getting on the boat.

Adam & Clint were amazing !! We truly enjoyed every second of our experience! It was the highlight of our vacation !! We felt very safe and got to just enjoy ourselves ! We chose to do the 5:30 am because we booked super late but in hindsight I would always opt for the earliest time slot just a more peaceful calm experience! Thank you guys for making this experience one to remember!!!

Great first experience out to see the Galapagos sharks and some other fun fish. The two captains were cool, they got us out to the cage safe and fast. You go in groups of 6 in the cage. The captains do run down the rules which help. However; it helps if you are with friends. So try and go with a group of 6!!! We had two that weren't in our friend group and they decided not to listen to the rules and the dude kicked me in the stomach so hard twice to the point I had to get out of the cage because I felt sick. Not the tours fault but it did ruin the rest of the experience for me. The sharks are amazing and I loved to see them! It helped me not be so afraid and now I am excited to learn to scuba!!!

Adam and Ephraim were amazing! Thanks for a great trip and awesome memories guys!

I don't even know ow where to start. This was a bucket list item for me. I really wanted to swim in open water with these magnificent animals but my family would never go for it so I gave in and agreed to go with the cage. While, I'll still probably do open water alone at some point, this was a fantastic experience. Adam and Ephraim were an amazing crew from check in all the way through the trip. They were informative, educational, and fun. Lots of shark jokes were great for everyone on board but they were also very educational in explaining shark behavior, conservation, and the methods they use locally to track and support shark populations. Once in the water (I paid and extra $50 for the GoPro footage - didn't share here as about 15min in length), we had a blast. My wife and kids (11 &15) really enjoyed the time in water. The sharks came literally up to the cage and were within arms reach. I did get the GoPro outside the cage a few times to get as close as possible. I would absolutely take this trip again. Well done Hawaii Shark Encounters!

Amazing service :) You don't need to know how to swim! Just hold onto the bars. Which created an amazing experience for my son.

This is the one Hawaiian adventure that we can't stop talking about. Miles and Caleb were fantastic and put us at ease before we entered the cage. Book this trip and create those lifetime memories.

Our experience was so great back in February that we had to bring the guys with us this time around! Our guides, Caleb & Miles, were fantastic. Real kind and friendly guys, they made the entire group we rode out with feel comfortable and even snapped a couple pics of us in the cage! You guys at Hawai'i Shark Encounters really enjoy what you do, because it's consistent you guys are so friendly and approachable, which is all the more inviting overall. It may not be so soon that we come back, but I hope a double review really solidifies it for anyone looking for confirmation to go, should they be looking for it!

Amazing experience. The two guides were fabulous. Rules mixed in with humor. Helpful and very knowledgeable about not only sharks but the birds flying overhead. Something I never thought I'd do with the family. Let alone by myself. And their music selection. It's was perfect!!!! It was a unique and thrilling time. Would go back again ! Oh kids of all ages were doing it.

This was the most amazing experience. The crew was so friendly and knowledgeable. They also made you feel completely safe before getting in the water with the sharks. I definitely recommend doing this while in Hawaii! I do recommend going early in the morning as the water can get rough later in the day and that could make the experience a little less fun as you do bounce around the cage when it's in the water.

The crew was super knowledgeable and taught us how to be safe. Friendly and personable made the experience memorable. Now let's talk about the sharks.... Amazing to be in the natural habitat and be so close to them. If your scared, don't be there is nothing like looking at a shark right in the eyes and making friends.

Hawaii Shark Encounters Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Hawaii Shark Encounters

When is the best time of day for optimal shark encounters and water conditions?

We went on the first trip out in the morning and saw about 8 sharks and 2 whales. The water was calmer also on the way out in the morning by the time we headed back it started to get rocky

I can not swim AT ALL but would very much like to shark cage dive, is this something I could do?

Absolutely! There are bars inside the cage that you grab, all the way around. You can just pull yourself around that way, like hanging on to the edge of the pool.

Can you bring your own underwater camera?

    Yes

With the times, if there are not enough they will consolidate times. We were signed up for 10am but got moved to 8am. You meet at Haleiwa docks near the blue hut (see photo). They provide mask, snorkel, and fins. You should bring a rash guard or wetsuit. The ride out is about 15 mins and as is typical in Hawaii, water can be choppy so you might get a little seasick. They give you instructions on the boat. Once there you hang on to a rope on the side of the boat and they take you individually to dive down closer to the sharks. We got lucky because there were tiger sharks (see photos). The cost is about $150 person but I would recommend paying some additional money for the go pro. You really want some documentation of what you did and saw. It's $50 for 2 people. They also have $250 option for photos and go pro but I think the go pro was enough. The people were really good and it was a great experience for all of us. Strongly recommend.

I genuinely hate having to write reviews like this (especially for small businesses that are doing…read moregreat work on shark education), but I have to share our experience. Who we are: Our family, two adults and two children (tween/early teen), did this shark dive in early August. We are all scuba certified, strong swimmers, and have snorkeled A LOT. Our daughter is VERY interested in marine science, and our son has always loved sharks, so we mostly did this for them (my husband and I have both previously dove with sharks). First, the pros: - Responsible shark diving. This was VERY important to us and One Ocean does it right in regards to respecting sharks, their home, and space. - Yes, we saw sharks! Not a lot - maybe 4 or 5 - but they are wild animals, this isn't a zoo, so we knew we may see 1 or 2, or we may see 20 - it's the nature of wildlife. We did the first tour of the day as well, but just wasn't our lucky day. - The photographer was wonderful & friendly and did his best to get shots. It was tough, because the sharks stayed quite deep, but he did what he could. He did capture a great shot of our daughter, and a decent one of our son, but did not get any of my husband or I, nor did he take many of just the sharks, which did surprise me. For the extra $250, I would still recommend it, as it's impossible to otherwise capture photos. Just know that you may not get photos of everyone in your group, or the sharks on their own. - Very safe! At no point did myself, husband, or children feel unsafe or in danger Now, the cons: - What really negatively impacted our tour was the boat captain. He was EXTREMELY rude and condescending. Twice, he made completely unacceptable and rude comments and it was very off-putting. When we arrived to the site, there were tiger sharks there, BUT the team had done NOTHING to prep everyone to jump right in the water. On the boat ride out was the time to have everyone get their masks and snorkels ready, fins on, etc. but they didn't. They waited until we got to the site and then were trying to rush everyone off the boat in case the sharks left the area. The issue with that is with children, nothing moves quickly. The boat captain said to the photographer, snarkily, loudly and right next to my children, husband and I "these are the slowest four people in the history of snorkeling". Never mind we actually WEREN'T slow - all of the gear was stored in underseat storage (at their direction) and needed to be pulled out and put on. Had that been done on the boat ride out, no one would have been rushed. But that comment was completely unprofessional and unacceptable. Our kids were shocked that someone would be that rude. Instead of doing his job and offering to help, he stood by and made snarky comments about how all of the guests were "so slow". Then when spraying the goggles with defog, he fully YELLED at our kids for rinsing them after he sprayed them. We have been diving and snorkeling for YEARS and we have ALWAYS rinsed our goggles after defogging. He made ANOTHER snarky comment to our CHILDREN "yeah, because YOU know what you're doing over ME" as we were getting into the water. I was disgusted at this point and we hadn't even gotten in the water yet. - EVERYTHING about the tour is VERY rushed. They were ~20 minutes late in arriving, which I'm sure contributed to the rush, but of all of the tours we did while in Hawaii (4 scuba diving excursions, 2 boat excursions, helicopter, snorkeling excursion, etc), this was the ONLY one that we all felt VERY rushed by. Their lack or organization and prep work became the customer's problem, which led to a negative experience. - You're only the water for about 20 minutes. Even though they say it will be 25-30, no one from our entire boat was in the water for more than 20 minutes total. I only know this because I was videoing with our GoPro the entire time we were in the water, turning it on when we entered the water and off when we exited. Again, this may have been because the crew was late in arriving, so we were late in departing, but regardless, important for people to know when they are booking that they will only have a total of ~20 minutes in the water. Also know that you are in open water and the day we went, the current was STRONG. You MUST be physically fit and a strong swimmer to do this activity. Two of the people on our boat could not even participate because they weren't physically fit enough - there should be disclaimers and warnings prior to booking, but I don't recall there being any. For the price, I probably wouldn't do it again. While I very much support shark education and conservation, they could definitely do a much better job of on-time departures, preparedness, and customer service.

No big deal, but we wish they could have at least told us since we had to show up 30 minutes early, we were standing around for almost an hour with no real communication about them being late. Because they were late to pick us up, they seemed a little rushed, telling us we needed to make sure we were quick and rushing us into the water. I get that they were behind but it wasn't our fault. The water was very, very rough. Which is not the boat's fault either, but just a warning to others. I have heard sometimes it's super calm so I am sure it's likely time of year, but when we went it was bad. Almost every single person got seasick. Also, when you go in the cage, it's almost worse for the seasickness. You are getting tossed around badly inside that thing. We actually had to hold on pretty hard. We were given some cool facts about the sharks and the waters, but it was like 5 minutes worth. We wish they would have talked with us a little bit more. Also, they were very thorough with instructions regarding safety of the cage, which is great. They gave no instructions about the mask and snorkel. I guess they just assumed everyone understood, but we had one guy get in the water and asked how to use the snorkel. I guess overall, when compared to other boat tours we had went on in Hawai'i, this one just doesn't compare. They provide no drinks or snacks (which again is okay, but for the same cost on another boat we were given them). Seeing the sharks was super cool; I just don't know if it was worth it.

While the sharks are very wild, they are trained to come to the sound of the rattle due to decades of Hawaiian crabbers fishing in that area. We were in the water about 30-45 minutes and had sharks swimming around us the entire time. In total we had 4-5 Galapagos Sharks and 1 blacktip shark. The sharks were all around us and swam up to almost within touching distance ( I recommend that you don't pet the sea puppies i.e. sharks). My underwater camera isn't as nice as the ones they own but you can see how close and pretty the sharks were. I highly recommend going out with Hawaii Ocean Adventure Teams to swim with the sharks if you're feeling brave enough!!

The crew was gracious, accommodating, and provided a great and educational experience, us deeper appreciation for the need for oceanic and environmental conservation. And along the way, swimming with 15 to 18 sharks bonus.
