There's something serene about the Koolau mountain range as a backdrop. There's pretty rolling hills as you drive through this large property to get to the veterans area. Everything is nicely marked with signage. Maybe other services are similar, I can only speak about the memorial I attended. While it was more than ten years ago, I remember it like yesterday. Under the pavilion, folding of the flag, and a uniformed gun salute. The shots pierced the air with such finality. When individuals come here to pay respects to their loved ones, they can count on well maintained grounds. I've always seen the grass nicely cut, the garbage receptacles are never overflowing, the water fountain nearest our spot always worked properly. Love the tall trees that surround our section and provides habitat for resident birds. We've parked and walked just take a stroll through other sections. It really is peaceful. Thank you landscape crew for keeping things picturesque. It's therapeutic to visit. read more

Been coming here for the past few years ever since my Papa passed away, and we buried he and my Grandmother together. This final resting place is beautiful. I know my grandparents aren't really there, and are in Heaven, but I like to think they're happy that we put their earthly remains in a beautiful place with amazing scenery. Even though they aren't really there, I still like to keep their grave decorated with pretty flowers so that it's known that there are people still here that are thinking about them, and still love and miss them very much. The only negative about this place is that my mom and I always have to replace the flags that we put by the grave because they always go missing. I see others that are untouched and don't move ( I know this because you can see the obvious wear and tear on them). But my Grandparents always have brand new ones because we keep having to replace them everytime! What's the deal?! read more

#55 for 2018 The view here is calm and serene. I do feel at peace here. Almost content. Turning into the park is easy. Exiting out is a different story. I wonder how long it will be when they put a stop light in? Putting it in now would be good as daily attendance increases. Administration offices are to the right when you pass through the gate separating Veteran's from Memorial. Here you can finalize arrangements for internment, locate a grave site by name, restrooms are available during business hours and lodge any grievances. Internment services are held on the west side of the field, opposite the rest rooms in the park. They are well maintained but can be filthy over the weekend. The Koolaus provide a magnificent backdrop. Breathtaking and majestic amplifying the serenity and peace. No wonder people like to exercise here, running, jogging or just walking. The property is well maintained most of the time. When I visit I bring a trimmer to catch the edging. Water buckets to get areas running dry. A cloth for wiping, cleaning, etc. I am glad my parents made the arrangements to be here but I can't help watching over and having a few words now and then with the front office. It's always a peaceful time here when I visit. A restorative time to put things into perspective. Of where we've been and where we are headed, as an individual, society, and life in general. Cemeteries does this to many, myself included. It's an uncommon spot to visit on a daily basis, but I'm sure there are some that do regularly. For myself though, I come here maybe twice a year to pay my respects and to visit family and friends who have come before us. I usually come early, usually on Saturdays with family, since they usually have the car most days. The cemetery always is always kept nicely and maintained beautifully . The last time I was here was in April 2021. While the ongoing COVID pandemic is a concern, as long as there's no large gatherings here, you should be okay. My last experience lasted for about 2 hours, visiting family and friends who are interred here from about 8am to about 10:00am. Cemeteries always gives me pause in life. The perspective this and many cemeteries I frequent often promotes the idea of living for yourself and living for the moment, especially when life itself is fragile and short as it is. The cemetery itself is small enough to circle the property within 30 minutes walking. It helps if you get here by sunrise, so there's no rush of people to find the preferred parking spot on any particular day. The overall experience here at the Veteran's State Cemetery is quite nice and thought provoking, as mentioned above. I often don't like to come to cemeteries, since it generally creeps me out in thinking of where I will be in the next 50 years, if I live that long. It's nice to walk around with my thoughts and to pay respects to veterans who have paid the ultimate sacrifice to keep us free. The cemetery itself is kept beautifully and the backdrop of Kaneohe and Kaneohe Bay is a nice scenic place to spend the day visiting. For the most part though, the time spent here at the Veteran's state cemetery is as peaceful and restorative as it can be. It usually reminds me of being human and how we humans eventually get old and become one with nature eventually. How life is short and we need to make the most of our lives rather than just living in fear of anything that may upset us. Due to COVID restrictions, best bet is to come by yourself and be as far apart from others as you can, so you don't have to wear a face mask during your stay here. Things are peaceful here and I enjoy myself each time I come here. The Veterans State Cemetery is located in Kaneohe, next to the Hawaiian Memorial Park. It overlooks Kaneohe Bay and it's a nice spot all around. It's physical address is 45-349 Kamehameha Highway. Nearby is the HPU-Hawaii Loa Campus and Ho'omaluhia Botanical Gardens. There is no admission fee to enter. Like all public parks and open spaces, it's free to come here on a daily basis. Just don't come here after 10pm. It gets freaky weird during the overnight hours, plus the cemetery is closed for business anyhow. As far as parking goes, virtually all of the roads heading in and out of the cemetery is basically free reign for parking. Park as close or as far as you want to while visiting departed loved ones. If you are like me, bus routes 65 and 69 stops along Kamehameha Highway to reach the cemetery. Cemeteries are a place for self discovery and to remember loved ones who've passed on. The ambiance is always peaceful and tranquil here. It usually brings me inner peace each time I come thru and spend time with my departed loved ones. 5.0 stars for the overall experience. I'm so sure that my dad is looking down at where he is laid to rest and feels satisfied and proud of this beautiful place. This cemetary makes it easy to connect with your loved one that passed on, because it is so peaceful, and calming. It actually starts from the drive here on the H-3, and the AHHHMAAAAZING SCENERY!!! already gets you emotional. I never had a problem with parking, and there are water faucets throughout. The way I see it there are 3 ways to review a Cemetery. 1. Don't. . .because it is actually a little weird. 2. One Star because someone done messed up or 3. 5 Star because they surpassed your expectations. For me today, as I am sure you have noticed I have a 5 Star review. ~~~~~~ It takes a special brand of person to work in customer service at a Cemetery, you can't have a bad day, you can't be in a bad mood because the people that you are dealing with are in fragile states, especially when attending a funeral and burial. Today I arrived for a funeral and a burial in the Veterans area of the property, as soon as I came into the gates I was lost and found the staff to be exceptionally helpful in turning me the right direction. When I arrived at the Veterans building I discovered a Kiosk system where you can enter a name and it will create a map for you to the persons gravesite, of course, in my case the individual had yet to be interred so I went in. . . Not only did the office woman show me where to go but staff members from the property also handled the casket and conducted themselves respectively throughout the service for someone they had never met before removing the casket for burial. The burial itself was over in only an hour and we were allowed to visit the grave for the first time. The staff here is amazing, they do what needs to be done so a day of remembrance isn't marred by inconveniences and mistakes. Thank You. read more

All I haven't been here for quite a while. And they had a gold star Memorial put up in front of the gate. The place is very well maintained. The place to relax, jog, walk, and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Though this is a cemetery for the veterans and their spouses, it doesn't feel like it. I come here to see my mom and my dad. To take pictures of the beautiful koolau mountains and of course mom and dad. It's so peaceful here it really really doesn't feel like a cemetery. It really feels like a park. read more

Came today to put flowers on my sister on law's resting place. They had a service at the entrance of the veterans area. Small kine traffic but after that very quiet and peaceful. Very clean and green! ONLY thing I didn't like...was that they don't have the temporary vases nearby for free like Punchbowl. Met a Samoan man who was visiting his wife. Very nice and wise man. Just too many people moving on to heaven too quickly. Rest in Gods amazing love! read more

This is most beautiful and serene cemetery I have ever seen. My father is buried here on the Veteran's side. There are always tons of fresh flowers placed on the many plaques here. They place is well kept. I never see grass or weeds overgrowing on the plaques. Beautiful resting place. read more

My dad passed away almost three years ago now. It was a pretty traumatic and devastating event in the life of our family, especially since he passed at home right before dinner on mom's birthday. Since dad had served in the Air Force, it was appropriate that the Hawaii State Veteran's Cemetary is his final resting place on earth. A burial plot in beautiful Kaneohe, a headstone, 21 gun salute, taps, and an American flag are small but truly valuable tokens of appreciation for service to our country. Our family was grateful to the staff for their courtesy, professionalism, and tactfulness at that difficult time. They were helpful in our selection of vases, amount of vases, wording on the marker, and other details that we may have overlooked. To this day, I still remember that I felt confident that the staff would take care of everything because we had so many other things to worry about. They reassured us that we could visit as often as we liked and that we could call any time with our questions and concerns. Every time I visit dad, I feel comforted in knowing he is in a better place - both in body and in spirit. He has a great view with a cool breeze in a peaceful and safe atmosphere, surrounded by fellow Veterans. read more

I sure rather be here than any other cemetery. My POPS, a 442nd veteran passed away September 7, 1997 and throughout the time there, esp these days after a new manager started there, everything there well kept, including grass and even my Dad's headstone had been cleaned by their staff, and I really appreciated that, esp because I tried cleaning our Pop's headstone but without satisfaction. I asked the office there, and it was done within 2 days. THANKYOU VERY MUCH TO THE STAFF IN THE OFFICE and the hard working cemetery' s team that strives to maintain such a LARGE cemetery. They were very understanding of all the questions we had for them in preparation for interment of our mom. Though I live out of State, I was able to FaceTime and saw that it was a beautiful day with the backdrop of the Koolau Mountain Range.
