I was craving sushi so decided to give this place a try and ordered 2 rolls to go: Big Island Roll and Spicy Ahi Tempura Roll. I enjoyed the Spicy Ahi Tempura Roll more than the Big Island Roll. The Spicy Ahi Tempura Roll was decently flavored with the sauces. The pieces of the Big Island Roll were a bit too big to eat in one bite and would fall apart if I took it two bites. Located on Monsarrat Ave in the little Plaza with Bogart's Cafe, da Cove, Aroma Italia, etc. I didn't want to venture out into central Waikiki to get Maguro Bros and decided to try this little Japanese owned spot in my neighborhood. Online ordering system is very easy. Hardly any seating inside or out (maybe two little tables). Menu has nothing original or fancy. Ordered the Chirashi bowl, Spicy Ahi Avocado bowl, 5 piece sashimi, and the Big Island 8 piece roll. Pickup was easy except they didn't even provide a bag to put everything in (very irritating). The 5 piece sashimi was puny and sad, not super fresh. Big Island roll had seared ahi, seared salmon, a teeny amount of unagi (barely there) and cucumber. They give you way too much rice in everything. Chirashi (sashimi) bowl was the best (quality wise). I don't think I'd go back here again for anything unless it was for convenience sake and probably would only order an 8 piece roll (best deal). read more

I used to come here a lot until shrinkflation happened. I got their $6 daily special which was chiraishi. Unfortunately it was literally two pieces of fish and half a shrimp cut into little pieces with a smattering of edamame. What little fish inside didn't taste fresh and the rice tasted stale also. I've had their spicy ahi poke bowl which was cat food -- overly marinated mushed poke with stale rice. Two times in a row were a fail. I am so disappointed sorry but I'm never coming back. read more

So I wanted to try this place. The pricing looks great. Nice little spot. BUT.... i'm glad someone bought my lunch here, and not paid for out of my own pocket. The staff is nice and the place is clean. Place does get busy and therefore no parking at times. It's a small spot. The sushi presentation was gorgeous. Volcano Roll was - sub par (and this was the best one). The maki rolls caught me by terrible surprise. It looked gorgeous with its colors, just to eat it, and see that it tastes like - NOTHING. Couldn't put my finger on it! Ahi Tataki, tamago, ebi, unagi, salmon, cucumber, mayonnaise, nori, sesame seed, and ..... Regular RICE! Not sushi Rice. Super sad face! I'm pretty sure if they made just added a little, it would have changed my outlook. Don't get me started on the wasabi! And i'm a wimp to wasabi. The best part of the meal? The ginger! If I had cravings for sushi of this price but wanted better caliber? I suggest 7-11, safeway, foodland.....basically anywhere else I would rather pick up sushi from. I absolutely love a spicy ahi bowl made with minced ahi-Japanese style (as opposed to local style big chunks). It's the style you'll typically find at Kozo, where the pieces of ahi are smashed small into almost a paste. I know that doesn't necessarily sound the most appetizing but it is and it's my favorite way to have a spicy ahi bowl. Saw pictures of Hawaii Sushi paired with the good reviews so I had to give it a try. It was delicious! High quality sushi with a solidly large portion! I got the avocado spicy ahi bowl and it seemed like there was a whole avocado in there. Seriously great portion size. The rolls were also killer and super good! Ok, I'm going to say I really loved this spot!! So it went from a 4 star unfinished review to 3 after this unflattering experience. Out of no where there started to charge ($2) for their rice vinegar. I found this out after I had placed my order and a lady front the kitchen side came to me and said that. It was unpleasant. And it's not advertised so it very much felt like they/she just decided to make that up. I have a soy allergy, but it takes me eating soy for it to affect me. She went out of her way yo make sure I didn't have any faith in my ability to eat here and decider to cancel my order and get a green smoothie at the Health Bar next door. So if soy allergies are not an issue for you and you don't mind paying $2 for rice vinegar if you want it. Then it's still a good sushi spot to come to. I'm going to take a break from sushi and this spot for sure. But it's still decent even if their manners and policies could be improved. read more

After a long delayed flight, I was craving a sushi snack when I arrived on Oahu and came across this place on Yelp. They had excellent reviews so I thought I'd give it a try. They're located in Kapahulu off of Monsarrat in a small shopping center, across the street from Pioneer Saloon. Parking lot is shared and limited. They have several other popular restaurants there, so if parking is filled up then you'll need to find street parking. I placed my order online and it was ready at the time they quoted. When ordering online, I recommend that you select the Square method to pay instead of DoorDash, as the latter will tack on extra dollars to your order if you go through them. They have a wide range of options including nigiri, rolls, poke bowls, sashimi, combos & party platters. Everything seemed very reasonably priced. I ordered the Philadelphia roll for $7.95 and the Ume cucumber hosomaki for $4.75. They combined both cut rolls into one bento box, which was perfect. Everything was fresh and delicious, and the sushi rice had the right flavor and texture. The two ladies working there spoke Japanese but also understood English well. The inside is small and operates more like a take-out place, although they do have a couple of tables outside. I would definitely return again the next time I'm craving sushi! read more

This review is for Hawaii Sushi's Ehomaki, which they only make for Setsubun. Setsubun is the day before the beginning of spring in the old calendar in Japan. This year was February 3rd. I always celebrate by getting roasted soybeans and throwing them at devilish people whilst yelling "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!" On Setsubun, you should also eat Eho-Maki (fortune roll)! Seven ingredients for the seven gods of fortune. Don't cut up the maki and eat it in one piece so you don't cut any good fortune. Face south-southeast (which is the good fortune direction of the year), eat ehomaki in one continuous bite, and in complete silence. It gives you time to think. Hawaii Sushi sells a 7-ingredient ehomaki for Setsubun, so mark your calendar on February 1st to remind you to place a pre-order! Their Kaisen ehomaki ($11.75) has seared ahi, salmon, eel, shrimp, cucumber, egg, and mayo (mayo as one of the ingredients struck me as odd). The regular ehomaki ($8.75) has shrimp, cucumber, egg, kanpyo, shiitake mushroom, and mayo. I always order the Kaisen ehomaki which are delicious! I am told that the Hawaii version of ehomaki is HUGE in comparison to the ones you find in Japan. I'm cool with that! Hawaii Sushi's ehomaki is delicious and the ingredients all work well together. My only complaint is the mayo. Would prefer less mayo. It was easy pre-ordering over the phone and they were very patient as I had to change my order two times (kept increasing as more people wanted to join in). Order was ready at the designated time. Was greeted cheerfully by all the workers and service was excellent. Note: It's a small parking lot for the number of businesses there. if you can't find parking, then you'll have to search for street parking. Hidden Gem Alert! (Ok...maybe not so "hidden"...but I was pleasantly bowled over by this takeout sushi spot). Counter service with seating options both inside, but mostly outside. Hawaii Sushi is punching above its weight in quality and a delightful discovery for a Saturday lunch! The fish is amazingly fresh here! The menu is appropriately small-Ish, leaning more towards traditional/simple Japanese cuisine, but with enough variety that everyone should be able to find something they like here. The Crunchy Lava Rock Roll is super yummy, essentially a California Roll topped with crunchies and kabayaki sauce. Sashimi Combo had a great selection of raw fish that was amazingly fresh and delicious. This is a great spot just outside of Waikiki in the Diamond Head/Montserrat neighborhood and will be a frequent stop when we are in this area. read more

In a crowded field of HNL takeout sushi spots, this place stands alone. For just a dollar or two more than the cheap places, you'll get much better quality and a much broader menu of options. The Spicy Tuna Avocado Bowl is full of nice fresh ahi and drizzled with a sauce that's spicy enough to know what you're eating but not so hot that it masks the flavor of your fish. Avo is beautifully sliced and the two pieces are much more than you'd usually get anywhere else. The Local Ahi Special Combo gives you dozen or so pieces of fresh ahi nigiri, spicy tuna rolls, and tekka maki. Delicious! Food is surprisingly high quality despite the (convenient) strip mall location along Monsarrat Ave. Plenty of free parking in the evenings. The folks that work here are friendly and kind. This is my favorite sushi joint in all Honolulu. Why? Because they are the only ones who have hamachi jalapeno rolls!!! Why doesn't everyone offer jalapeno slices with their sushi? WHY? They have the freshest fish and your sushi is made to order. The dragon roll is so crunchy on the outside with just the right amount of sweet. This place is a little hidden gem that offers quality Japanese sushi at a reasonable price. One of my favorite and most memorable items were the Inari bombs: spicy tuna, and chives on rice within an inari seasoned tofu outer layer. As much as I love, extravagant and deep fried Americanized style sushi, it's refreshing to come back to the authentic and simple Japanese style sushi (with a few Hawaiian twists). And Hawaii can be a little hard on the budget for mainland travelers, so it's nice to have a food destination that won't break the bank. I also loved the assorted fish & tamago roll. This is my FAVORITE casual sushi spot in town. Everything I've had has been super delicious and fresh and really reasonably priced. My favorite are the platters (order ahead for potlucks).
