This such a great, affordable sushi spot! I ordered takeout after seeing my friends post a few pictures from here and decided I wanted to try it out myself. I had the lava tube roll and the spicy ahi jalapeño roll. The fish is very fresh - I absolutely loved the spicy ahi they used for the rolls. They are also very generous with the green onions, which I appreciated. I've been to other sushi spots where the rolls can be a bit heavy and overwhelming, but Hawaii Sushi seems to have found the perfect balance between combining a lot of ingredients while still keeping the roll easy to eat. The spicy jalapeño roll wasn't spicy at all, but it was still delicious, just something to be aware of if you're into spicy foods. This place is located on Monsarrat on the corner of a mini strip mall. Limited parking. We came after going to the beach and got sushi for dinner and ate at a table they have in front of the shop. Place your order and wait outside til they bring it out to you. No eating indoors. Plus it's tiny. I ordered a spicy ahi bowl $11 and it was fantastic. I normally don't like pulverized fish, but the flavor was spot on. They also have pre-made bowl for discount $6 which I tried on a separate day. As cheap as they are, I don't recommend them. The rice is kinda hard and definitely not the same as having it made fresh with fresh fish. They also have pre-made rolls which again, the rice was kinda hard. But if you're looking for a discount, then that's a way to go. The Mr always gets the discounted stuff, but perhaps I'm a snob and require fresh rice. I also think it depends when you get from the discounted fridge. One day it tasted really good, and another, kinda stale and hard( the rice that is) which was not enjoyable. Maybe earlier the better. They have super affordable basic sushi rolls (I'm talking like $4 for a spicy tuna roll) and other specialty rolls as well that still won't break the bank. This business definitely has had me as a repeat customer for years. They have the FRESHEST FISH. My go to is the hamachi samshimi and ikura bowl. It's not on the menu but you can ask for it. If not the salmon ikura is just as good. Don't expect any fancy sauces or outrageous toppings. It's just good, fresh and clean flavors. I love their incorporation of vibrant lemon and crunchy jalapeño to add another depth of complexity to their dishes. Prices are also very fair. Hard to find a fresh fish and ikura bowl under $20 now days but here you can. In fact everything is all under $20. Very affordable for what you are getting. I also have to mention the BIG ISLAND ROLL. I might be biased coming from BI but I am seriously in love with this roll. Apart from the tamago (egg) and crunchy cucumber there is a crazy mix of seared ahi, unagi (eel), salmon and my personal favorite the shrimp. It's just everything you could ever want in a roll! Customer service is top notch. Everyone, including the chefs are so welcoming and kind. The vibe is so welcoming. Parking. They have a fee lot but it is shared with the other businesses in this strip. You maybe have to find street parking and it's pretty crowded and tight. Don't let it dissuade you. This is my go-to spot for poke bowls. Everything is always fresh and made to order - no bad pieces of fish! I usually get the ahi poke bowl or the avocado ahi poke bowls. The ahi is well seasoned and nice cuts of fish. They give a whole half avocado too with the bowl! I usually prefer regular or brown rice with my poke bowls, but only sushi rice is available which does taste good with this poke. They also sell poke by the pound, but I prefer the bowls. It's the perfect ratio of poke to rice. For a decadent meal, you can get a poke bowl here and an açaí bowl to accompany it at the Health Bar in the same complex. read more

I wasn't impressed after reading all the great reviews. It's not bad sushi. But it's also not amazing 5 star sushi. No tempura nor tempura shrimp; only boiled shrimp. Good if you're in a rush and want grab-and-go sushi to go about your day and enjoy Hawaii. This is not a restaurant, so there is no indoor seating. It's exactly as I said, grab-and-go. Ok so they have a chalkboard menu behind the register, a giant picture menu on the right wall when you walk in and a super detailed menu outside. Unfortunately I didn't see the detailed menu until I was outside after I ordered because when we arrived, a huge group of people from the Health Cafe were sitting there blocking it. My boyfriend got the lava rock roll which I tried and it was super delicious, he really enjoyed it too even though he wasn't that hungry. I was actually super hungry for once and ordered the hamachi jalapeño roll, spicy ahi jalapeño roll and tamago 2 piece. My rolls were good but not amazing at all. My girlfriend said it was the best she's ever had. The rice is very tender and perfect sushi rice. Cooked not too chewy or not too hard, a perfect complement to the bowl of Salmon Ikura ($13) we ate. She never like Ikura, which I love, but I think this place hooked her! Meh. Short menu and food was just so-so. We ordered 2 different poke bowls and a crunch roll. Poke disappointed, tasted ok but was a but bland and uninspired. Crunch roll also gets a B. Most of their rolls have jalapeno or sriracha and while I can take the heat, I prefer to taste the fish if it's fresh. Be sure to arrive with no need to use the facilities before dining. Even dropping $40+ on lunch, no you cannot use their bathroom. Somewhere between rude and odd. Dining space is minimal. One indoor table for 2 squoze in the corner. Couple outdoor tables for 2-3 but was windy today and all we could do to hold onto our dishes and napkins while trying to eat. The soy is provided in little packets. Nicer places have the little bottles that don't blow around or leak on the table. The Sushi Spot in Waikiki and the HanaPa Market 10 minutes to the East were both much better, imo. read more

Still my OG favorite sushi shop ~! I always go for the lava tube roll, sunrise roll, and crunchy lava rock roll, 8 pieces for each order and split it with my boyfriend. It costs around $26 and my stomach is always so satisfied afterwards. Please keep supporting them if you love them as well, especially now with everything going on! Ps: all the times I've called in my order and picked up my food, I noticed the people assisting me were fluent Japanese speakers (I would order in Japanese sometimes), but this last time, the people in the front seemed more like local maybe college kids. Unfortunately for me, this place has been bookmarked like forever until this past Friday when I finally made a point to check out this place in the Kapahulu neighborhood. Of course every time I go to a new joint for some grindz, I have to check out Yelp to see if any of my Yelp buddies came here before. Luckily I found some wonderful reviews from - Lyla D., Scott B., Sheryl M., Rachel I., Nat N., & Angela Y. so it appears that this place is legit!!! Hawaii Sushi is located along Monsarrat Ave., in a small little strip mall just across the street from the Pioneer Saloon restaurant. There is free parking in the private parking lot, but bear in mind the parking lot is small, and it is shared by other businesses. If you can't find parking in the private parking lot, rest-a-sure there is plentiful parking within the Kapahulu neighborhood. The day I came here to eat, I didn't even bother to go into the private parking lot, as I just parked a block away in the Kapahulu neighborhood & walked to the restaurant. The Hawaii Sushi restaurant is pretty small, with just a few tables inside the establishment, as well as a few tables outside of the restaurant by the entrance area. If you wanna do a grab & go, this place would probably be your best bet! On the day I came here, it was pretty empty so we decided to eat inside of the restaurant. Upon looking over the wall menu, I decided to get an Avocado Spicy Ahi bowl, and my lunch buddy got a Salmon bowl. As a side, we also got a Rainbow Roll. What can I say about the grub? Pretty good bowls, & rolls here! They do have some daily specials for $6.00 bucks, but those items are pre-made, and once they run out........that's it, can't get anymore, as they limit how many specials they do in a day. As for me, the day we came here we just did the regular menu and ordered whatever was on the wall menu, and passed on the daily special. Trying to veer away from many of the overpriced tourist destinations located along Kalakaua Ave, I turned to Yelp to see areas within walking distance of our hotel, but further inland away from the main tourist crowd. Focusing my search on sushi, I scrolled through quite a few 3 star restaurants before I finally came across Hawaii Sushi. Located about a 20min walk from the Hyatt where we stayed, Hawaii Sushi is located inside a very tiny strip mall near an elementary school further into the residential areas. It is a very small establishment, with about 4 tables inside for dining in. Everyone of the staff here are super friendly and very respectful. While they have multiple pre-made containers for to-go orders, you can also order freshly made items from their menu. For our meal, we opted to go for the following combos: -Roll Combo ($12) which consisted of 6 pcs of spicy ahi tuna, 6pcs of eel cucumber, and 6pc California shrimp roll -Ahi Special Combo ($13) which consisted of 4pcs of nigiri, 3pcs of spicy roll, and 6pcs of hosomaki -Hawaii Sushi Combo ($14) which consisted of 2pcs of ahi, 1pc of salmon, 1pc Hamachi, 1pc eel, 1pc tamago, 1pc shrimp, and 1pc ikura The prices themselves were definitely very affordable for the quantity that we were provided. Everything definitely tasted very authentic, even down to the soy sauce used (ie - not the blended type). Presentation was done well, and our only complaint was with the freshness of the fish, which probably had more to do with the fact that we showed up in the evening rather than the morning when they probably get their shipment in. While lacking in the sheer variety of offerings that a larger restaurant would typically offer, the affordability that Hawaii Sushi offers definitely cannot be beat. My favorite sushi to go place. Everything I tried tasted fresh and delicious. Parking can be difficult around lunch time or afternoon but someone will go out the parking lot or street parking. I like their avocado poke and avocado spicy ahi donburi. Lots of avocado is in there! There are daily special and those are really good price. I think uni and crab is seasonal. They cost more but worth it. I heard that uni is from Hokkaido and taste a lot better then uni from other place so I want to try it soon. The crab is delicious. I had it last new year. It was sweet and tasted fresh. Another good thing for me is military discount. One more reason to go back.
