We had such a great first visit! The clinic was a little hard to find but they did a great job explaining when our appointment was made. The staff made us feel welcomed even when I forgot some important paperwork I was reminded to bring, whoops! They had my dogs name on the door as a custom touch that made us feel like we were a priority which is rare in vet med for non emergencies! The rooms and office space were clean and organized. Dr Yamagata was patient with me when showing me her findings in my pups eyes. She even gave our pup a cute bandana on our way out the door! So kind! Overall great experience! read more

Sometimes you just have to be an advocate for your dog when they get older. I noticed her eyes were going bad from diabetes and I really wanted to see an eye specialist. There are two on this island and this one was preferred out of the two options. It took several months for the first original appointment, which to me seemed kind of normal to see an animal specialist. But once you get in the other appointments seem to be easier. I think the one thing I noticed is that they seemed to be kind of old school. Appointments were scheduled over the phone and manually on a appointment book. Receipts are also not soft copies either to emails. A lot of times you're leaving a voice message on their phone, but it seems like the receptionist has several jobs to do there. Otherwise, everyone there is friendly and we really liked the doctor. She was so very patient and kind to nala which we really liked and always had her best interest. Some key notes - you must have a face mask on if you want to go inside. Prior to your appointment you must wait outside until you're called in for yours. The location is on a one way street in a alleyway so it's very easy to miss. read more

Dr. Yamagata is. REAL Dr. not a drive thru vet. She goes above and beyond, especially in patient education. The wait times and logistical issues mentioned in other reviews are a byproduct of her emphasis on a 1 on 1 experience. Being upset about the methods she uses to deliver the best possible care is beyond me. The staff is also top notch! read more

Paying a lot of money for the Doctor to come from Honolulu to Big Island and tell us that fire ants do not cause eye problems for our animals here and telling us to remove our dogs eye was absolutely ridiculous! She needs to get more education! read more

A friend of a friend flew Henry, his dog, in to have cataract eye surgery done at the Hawaii Veterinary Vision Care clinic. They are down a small one way street. At first I couldn't find them because their building looked residential but they were on the right hand side with a four or five car small parking lot directly in front of their building. Each time I went to the Hawaii Veterinary Vision Care clinic, the office staff was very friendly and attentive. They kept Henry all day for the surgery and sent him home in the afternoon. There was follow up care of the next day. We were worried because he seemed like he had an elevated heart rate and breathing so we brought Henry back and they monitored him for a few hours before flying back to the neighbor island. The very cool thing about the Hawaii Veterinary Vision Care clinic is that the doctor actually flies to neighbor islands every month to see her patients. Personally I don't have a dog right now but if I did, this is where I would take him. read more

Okay, firstly this place is located down the street from Lobster King by Ala Moana. It's on a small one-way street so that means tight parking. The building itself holds four cars but the next best thing is street parking. Secondly, my situation was pretty dire. My dog developed an ulcer in his eye that needed same-day or same-week attention from Dr. Yamagata (as recommended by own vet.). I'm so grateful that the receptionist there (can't recall her name) was able to schedule me in that same week for an urgent care appointment. It was originally a drop-off (drop off at 8 AM and pick up at 4 PM, Dr. Yamagata would have looked at my dog on her free-time) but I was lucky enough to get an urgent care appointment instead. The explained prices to me and it was really reassuring considering I was nervous about the bill (even asking if I wanted to continue scheduling my appointment knowing costs *BONUS). Today was my appointment with Dr. Yamagata and my first impression of her was that she was very professional (explaining procedures thoroughly, asking tons of questions about things I've never considered as possible explanations for his ailment, etc.) and so knowledgable about my dog's breed, saying things that I didn't even know! I couldn't be more grateful for her and her team for helping me during this time. She thoroughly explained everything to me, including medications, and I left the clinic feeling so much relief. Let me just start out by saying that Dr. Yamagata is a wonderful veterinarian. Very compassionate, knowledgeable, and kind. I've had to take two of my pets here and have been here no less than half a dozen times with more appointments to go. The staff is always very friendly but rather small. Because of this, communication can be a bit lacking - in terms of reminder calls and callbacks. Because she is the only specialist on the island her schedule gets full rather quickly. It is well worth the wait, though. For being a specialist, her fees are pretty reasonable, especially for Hawaii. Overall, I would recommend this clinic and this veterinarian. read more

Dr. Yamagata performed emergency eye surgery on our beloved shitzu Sophie after her eye was horribly gashed at The Honolulu Pet Clinic while boarding. The doctor and her entire staff are very professional. Dr. Yamagata knew our breed (Chinese Crested) and its history on the island. Unfortunately, this breed has suffered some in-breeding and as a result, a bad gene affecting the eyes is being passed on. Dr. Yamagata even knew which dog in the pedigree was the culprit. The doctor's knowledge of our dog's problems, their causes and their cures has been impressive and reassuring. I'm grateful our vet referred us to Dr. Yamagata. read more

This is the first time I came here. Since she is the only one on the islands she is very busy. Door is locked so you need to be buzzed In. Staff was pleasant and the receptionist was very friendly and informative. Now the Dr was not what I expected. Since she is a specialist I expected her to be aloof or condescending. Instead she was friendly and straightforward. I would recommend this Dr to anyone. Plus she had good things to say about my vet. read more
