My cat was unusually drooling and did not appear to get better. We were alarmed when he stopped eating one day. My primary vet clinic was booked through September and the soonest availability they had was in 3 days. I called this clinic and allthough they did not have an availability to see my cat, they took the time to listen to me and were really kind to provide referrals to other vet clinics. I was able to schedule a same day appointment with another clinic. 5 stars to the person handling my call. Dr. Kam misdiagnosed my dog recently and my family and I resorted to going to the emergency vet (VERC). The people at VERC were able to correctly diagnose our dog and we ended up having to put her down within hours of our original vet visit. Ohana Vet has now successfully neutered/spayed 3 bunnies of mine - my girl about 5 years ago, and recently my new boy and girl bunnies. Ohana Vet still has the best prices for neuter/spaying of bunnies, and I'm really glad I went to Ohana Vet again when I got my new bunnies. It's really hard to find bunny savvy vets, so I felt the need to update my review. The staff are still very nice and friendly! I am surprised when they remember me after it's been so long since I've been there. You really do feel like Ohana. Covid procedures are easy - they don't let anyone inside, you just wait out in the car and call when you get there. The staff will come out with whatever forms you need to fill, take your pets inside for you, then back to your car when all done. Ohana was our first choice in pet care when we came to the island, the summer of '16, with our pooch with a penchant for problems with her ears and an affinity for anxiety. We weren't sure if it was a combination of the soil or allergens in Hawaii, but the first year or so, our pup had one ear infection after another. We took her into Ohana Veterinary Hospital and were immediately greeted with care and concern, from Kiana and Lois at the front desk. One would hope that all the employees of a vet clinic happen to love animals, but that hasn't always been our experience. We were delighted that this crew is 100% animal friendly! Each time, Dr. Kam would look over Scout's fire engine ears, careful to take a look, muzzle with a soft muzzle for everyone's safety, while Stacy would assist in holding her. Medicine was prescribed for her ears, or an ear wash, and Dr. Kam would explain at length about what could be a trigger for her. Finally, after many visits, she suggested, we have ruled out everything else, and it might be a dietary allergy. We switched Scout to a grain free diet and she has been virtually ear problem free since! Dr. Kam and her team are very thorough in follow up appointments to make sure Scout is on track for her vaccinations, heart-worm, and flea and tick meds. They are fantastic about being proactive about issues before they arise, and very quick to respond to problems when we call. They fit you into their schedule as quickly as possible, which was of great help during the "Great Ear Emergencies of 2016" when I felt I was going crazy and poor Scout was miserable. In August, we got a new pup from the Humane Society, and Ohana Vet works well with them, offering 1 free Vet check (and stool check) within 1 week of adoption. Because we are a military family, they also offer a military discount and help with preparing your pet for their next military adventure, which relieves a lot of stress. Been going here for years. Love Dr. Tokuyama! She rocks! She is an excellent vet who really cares about our canines. Dr. Tokuyama takes the time to educate pet owners about diagnostic testing, treatment protocols, and she supports our decision making process. She's very open to questions and explains in a manner that we can understand. I was interested in preparing meals at home (trying to avoid kibbles) for our dogs and she took the time to xerox recipes for us. I really appreciate the time she invests in educating pet owners. The staff are knowledgeable and genuinely kind. They treat our canines like family. With that said, expect a scolding from the doctors if you've not followed orders or show up even a little late. Arrive at 8:05am (when you were told to be there by 8:00 am SHARP) and you'll quiver at the wrath. It's not inexpensive! Expect to pay for good service. The clinic also offers dog food, healthy snacks, supplements, and oral care supplies. Free parking with several designated stalls. Hours of operation fit our schedule. When it comes to our fur babies, you want a full service vet clinic by excellent staff. read more

We've been going here for 3 years now. The staff are super friendly and they really do love animals. They love my dog Kaya and she loves them. They always shower her with treats. They are also on top of things. They call to follow up, make sure to send reminders for the annual stuff and individual visits. Anytime I have questions they take time to thoroughly run through options and costs. They are so patient and have a good sense of humor. I feel they are honest with their customers about any issues and costs. There's ample parking, their hours are pretty decent if you work an office job (open Saturday and open late on Thursdays). They don't do fancy stuff like fertility services but they have solid referrals. They also don't do anything too crazy in terms of surgeries or fancy equipment but they are a solid choice for regular care. They work with a 24 hour emergency vet to ensure their pet patients are covered. read more

Our family has been coming to Ohana Vet for many years, for 10+ dogs. They should give us a bulk discount!  Even though we don't live in Kalihi anymore, the short drive to Ohana Vet is worth it because we know they'll take care of our fur babies. We get reminders when we're due for our annual visit, and it's so convenient to be able to bring all three dogs (50-65 lbs) at the same time. They get their checkups in the exam room together, which makes them a little less anxious. During emergencies or when we have more urgent issues, they always try their best to flex their schedule to accommodate us and help us stay calm. All the staff, including Kiana, Lois & Stacy take care of our babies like their own ohana. You know it really is unconditional love, when they have to deal with the pee, diarrhea & vomit, and they still love them at the end of the day. read more

They are very nice and professional here, the only thing that keeps it from being a five star review is that they are a little pricey vs. like petco clinics however they can and do offer more services but are not equipped for emergencies so for normal check ups or regular checkups they are awesome but have a backup emergency just in case. If you need cheap vaccines petco has them for $35 a vaccine no exam fee. read more

Even though I don't live near Kalihi, I always bring my animals (dog and cats) to Dr. Lissa Kam and her amazing staff. There is almost zero turnover in Dr. Kam's practice over the past 15 years because of how happy everyone feels to be working there. And that happiness comes through in the way they treat my babies and me. They were so wonderful when we had to put one of our cats down a couple of years ago. DA POPOKI'S (CAT'S) MEOW! - Located in da Waiakamilo Shopping Center adjacent to McDonald's (center also has The Original Pancake House & choke "buy me drinky" bars) - Parking: several assigned stalls are located in front, and wherever else you can find parking in da shopping center - Cash and major credit cards accepted - Lissa Kam, DVM is the wahine in charge of dis operation - OVH = member of the Better Business Bureau of Hawai'i - Offer a nice selection of cat/dog food (Science Diet, Iams), snacks (Greenies), pet dental hygiene items (toothpaste & toothbrushes), toys, ID tags, etc. Since my original review, I've been to two scheduled appointments with Dr. Lissa Kam. My first appointment was in early January 2011 and the other was in March 2011. For the first appointment, check-in is done at the front desk which is usually manned by at least 2-3 employees. The waiting room is filled with cat food, snacks & other products they sell, a loud, squawking lovebird who was probably a client's castoff, and has half a dozen chairs to choose from. Clean and simple. Dr. Kam performed a brief physical exam on my popoki (cat), examined her detailed patient history, and took several vials of blood to be shipped to the mainland. Her vet tech was an older local/Polynesian lady who was so gentle and kind with my popoki; she commented on how soft and supple her fur was, held her down firmly, but gently while the vet drew her blood, and talked to her in a reassuring, quiet tone of voice. Once everything was pau (finished), Dr. Kam stayed behind another 5-10 minutes to address my numerous questions and concerns; she took the time to answer everything to the best of her knowledge, never rushed me, or made it seem like I was taking up her time, and I always felt like I was treated with respect and professionalism. Dr. Kam is a VERY practical and reasonable vet, and not one of those vets who'll attempt to oversell you services, products, and procedures to pad your bill. I wish there more down-to-earth, professional, kind, and courteous vets like her around town. Payment is due after services are rendered (aka "before you leave da place after vet pau w/you"). I paid with my VISA & received a receipt outlining the procedures that were done, the cost for each of them, and my total with sales tax. My popoki (cats) = my keiki (children), so I really appreciated them taking extra steps to comfort my popoki while she was freaked out being in a new environment (new vet/new office). Office visitation fee + physical exam: $36.75. This is very, very reasonable. Other vet places charge $40, $50 on up! IFA test: $63 (other vet clinics were quoting me anywhere from $100 - $200, $250+) IFA results came back a week later: faint positive. I asked Dr. Kam for her advice & she said to retest my popoki in 2 months using a combined IFA + ELISA test. Fast forward to March, I received the same wonderful treatment by Dr. Kam and her staff. A week later, Dr. Kam personally called me with the results of the IFA + ELISA test - which I appreciate since most vet places will have their employees/vet techs do the calling - and my popoki was negative for both!!! It's been over 5 months since my popoki tested positive for a deadly virus that could've killed her within 3 years, an estimated $400 - $500 spent on repeated testing and vet visits, worry/anxiety/concern over her beating this virus, and a struggle to find the right vet who could provide testing and care at a reasonable price without skimping out on quality/compassion/care. 'Ohana Veterinary Hospital provided all of this, and I am forever grateful to them for their role in my popoki's road to recovery. read more

We have been taking all of our pets here for years, they have excellent service and take the time to answer questions you have. All 3 of our cats have been well cared for. They don't freak out when we bring them out of the car and they realize where they are. They don't hiss at the staff when they take them inside. We took our foster fail in and they made sure to take the time to tell us what to look for and some things that we should do to monitor her. They called to update us when our boy had to stay over the weekend to let us know how he was doing. The costs aren't overinflated to cover overhead. Highly recommended! read more

Their prices are reasonable and they never try and upsell you on things you don't need. If its an emergency, they will always work on squeezing you in. It was my first visit with Ohana Veterinary Hospital and I was very happy with my visit. The staff was very friendly and Dr.Tokuyama was seriously the best with my dog. The staff and Dr. was very gentle with my dog as she was getting shots and very informative about what my next steps should be in keeping my dog healthy. Ohana Veterinary will definitely be the only vet I bring my pets to and will recommend this place to friends and family! One and only down side is that they only take appointments. I took my dog here to get neutered because they were one of the Vets listed on the Neuter Now program. I called around to a few other places on the list as well since I knew to ask questions about any "extra charges" that we may see on the bill post surgery. First I can say that these people were the nicest ones on the phone out of the 4 places I called total. The lady on the phone politely answered all of my questions, which at the other places I was treated a bit rudely. Secondly, they came across as really caring about my dog. At the other places they knew I was just going to their vet because of the program, and it was obvious they didn't give a crap about me or my dog. Finally, I felt any additional fees I incurred for my dog were totally legitimate. The most expensive charge was a blood test they performed before agreeing to do the surgery. They were basically testing his organ functions to make sure the anesthesia wasn't going to kill him. As his owner/parent I appreciate their concern. I decided that while he was knocked out for surgery I'd have them microchip him, and the charge was $18.75, which I thought was reasonable. The only other charge for the day of surgery was for 5 pain pills ($9) and the optional satellite dish thing so he wouldn't lick his incision. They offered it as an option and said they if we did not need it I could return it for a refund. It was $8.75 as well. I got out under 50 bucks, and at some other places it would have cost an arm and a leg. Overall I was very happy with Ohana Vet Hospital and will bring my dogs there from now on for any future necessary medical care. Dr. Kam was very, very nice, and competent as well. I didn't worry at all about my dog when I dropped him off there yesterday, and he was in great hands. Today you wouldn't even know he had surgery yesterday as he is bouncing around the house as if nothing had ever happened, so I know they did a good job taking care of my pup, and I have no problem recommending Ohana Vet Hospital or Dr. Lissa Kam to anyone. read more

As a note, I rarely do review for companies and when I do they are more on a positive note but I was not impressed by the customer service that I received after I left a message on their voice mail to see about scheduling an appointment for my 2 bunnies. I wish that I had written the name of the woman that returned my call. Their site discloses that they service all fur babies. I even see a review by someone saying that she had her bunnies spayed and neutered there. Well, this person immediately tells me that they only do physicals and cut nails for bunnies. They do not do any type of surgical procedures or administration of medicine for bunnies. I thought that was very interesting. She went on to say that they don't have any openings til April. just WOW!!! If anyone out there has a bunny or bunnies as your family member and are considering sending them here, don't even think about it. I am going to make sure that more of the Bunny Family Community is aware of this. To take it a step further, if I were to have any other type of pet, be it a dog or cat, I would not come here, either, with staff members carrying the attitude that we don't need your business. This Island is small and you never know who you know and many businesses succeed because of word of mouth. Well, I will make sure my voice is loud and clear regarding this Veterinarian Service. Based on the reviews here, wanted to bring a cat I'd just rescued from the Human Society. Ohana's name was on a list of vets who were willing to conduct a free initial exam for rescued cats. But when I called, although the staff was polite, there was a long hold and was told that there were no such appointments available. The "first available" would be the 30th, two and a half weeks away. Since this was outside of the 7-day window for the offer, essentially they were saying that they weren't going to be doing any of the initial examinations. I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt, but it came across very much as if because there was no money involved, they weren't going to take on the account. No reference to another vet, no effort to save the business. I had been looking for a vet to establish a relationship with, but I guess this isn't it. I need to contact the Human Society as well, since their name shouldn't be on the list. I had the same experience with two other vets--they seem to be using the human society to generate new business, but not actually follow through with their part of the commitment. Not impressed. On the high side, Kapalama Pet Hospital honored their offer and agreed to see the newest member of our family. read more

My wife and I brought our dog here to get neutered a few days ago. The surgery went fine, that is not the biggest issue I have with this place. When the surgery was complete the vet prescribed a pain reliever called rimadyl, a drug that has been known to kill dogs. The company that makes the pill, Pfizer pharmaceutical, has been sued over this drug killing pets in the past and lost because it was proven that this drug really does irreparable damage to dogs organs, nervous system and causes bleeding ulcers in the dogs stomachs. I did my own research after my dog started stumbling around, staring clueless at anything and peeing blood just 2 days after he started taking this medication. It appals me that any respectable vet would prescribe something like this and not give any clue or warning about the potentially fatal side effects that can come with it. I will never go here again. Do your research before you give your pet anything from the vet, they are just trying to make as much money as they can off of you and could care less about the health of your pet. read more

No one told me raising a real pet is gonna be as expensive as it's costing me! Regardless, you gotta do what you gotta do. My friend's mom who owns four cats recommended me this place. I'm glad she did because everyone at this clinic was so friendly and loving for my kitten and myself. Dr. Kam did not push for me to get any extra vitamins or services which was nice. The first exam for my kitten cost up to $100 and it only took 20 minutes for a check up and first shot. Kitten starter kit is included with the charge :D Is it worth going to this vet? My baby angel face's doctor was Dr. Leloy at VCA Manoa. But unfortunately, she doesn't accept the neuter now certificate via the humane society. I looked up ohana vet hospital here on yelp and read the wonderful reviews about Dr. Kam. I scheduled a pre-exam and liked her bed-side manner with my baby. Her staff took excellent care of my baby and her needs before, during, and after the surgery. When I got the bill, I couldn't believe how reasonable it was compared to vca's prices. The quality of service I got was the same and I really felt at ease with Dr. Kam. She is very pacient with you and takes her time explaining all the medical terms so that I could understand. I don't normally bring my cat's here for the Vet but I always buy my cat food from her. My cats require a certain type of cat food. Its the C/D for UTI's. My one had had to get operated twice because of it so from here on out we only buy Feline cat C/D. The people working here is fantastic. always nice and caring. I get cat food, in and out quick. Also a plus that they have parking in the front just for them. Makes it even better when just doing a quick stop for getting cat food. read more
