Been coming to Surf Paws since 2021 and was in the care of Dr. Kingery. She was amazing but has since retired apparently. Routine check ups and blood work were never a problem, until we had a problem which has gone unnoticed for years. Our 12 year old dog went in for a routine check up in december 2023 and was told he need to have several teeth extracted. Went in January 2024 to have teeth removed by another vet, Dr. Buntz who told us he removed all teeth that were an issue. No referral to any specialist or a heads up that he had major periodontal disease. Fast forward to 10/7/24, he misses a step and slides on the last step of the stairs (like he has for many years) and we think maybe this time somehow he's broken his jaw (as he was not eating for a couple days) so we take him to surf paws and dr. M (first time I've seen this clown is apparently the owner) takes one look at him and says "YOU MUST GO TO THE EMERGENCY CENTER NOW!" They give me two options VERC on nimitz or VCA in pearl city. I told them I have to pick up my kid in town so I'd prefer VERC if they're equally the same. The technician says for this situation either would be fine. "Rush over, don't worry we will call and give them a heads up with Roscoe's history but he needs surgery on his broken jaw ASAP." I rush over to VERC and after sedating him the vet there says he can tell that the broken jaw is broken where the two major teeth ( one on each side) have periodontal disease and its so bad that the root has compromised his jaw causing them to break. Unfortunately VERC's surgeon said dental is not their speciality and the referring vet (SURF PAWS) never called in that I was coming (as is protocol) or else they would've told her to not even send me over. So VERC refers me to a specialist. I go back to SURF PAWS demanding answers. DR. M Why did you not call VERC and give them Roscoe's history and let them know i was on my way?? Her response, "well, VERC tends to not pick up their phone and leave vets on hold.." No, Dr. M. Not acceptable. I called VERC on my way and they picked up. DO YOUR JOB! DR. M. Dr Coleman said you should've been able to tell this was caused by dental issues not trauma and SURF PAWS should've A) taken out the teeth when he had extractions but he suspects you did NOT because apparently those particular teeth are fragile and most vets refer to specialists for them because they will accidentally fracture the jaw while removing B)NOT sent me to VERC . When confronting Dr. M with this news, her response was " Oh that Dr. Coleman, I've worked with him before. He's not good. He doesn't know what he's talking about and I'm unhappy that he did not operate immediately on Roscoe. You did NOT get the service I sent you there for. You should go ask them for a refund. So I said, well Dr M, you sent me there, how about YOU ask for my refund. Dr. M obliged (acknowledging her referral) but to avail. I requested for Dr. M to send my x rays and files to VERC and the specialist ASAP. After asking twice in which they said they sent it and DID NOT, I told her it is MY RIGHT to my dog's information and to some answers as to why i was never informed about his dental health issues. DR M. had none. and when I asked for answers she said "GET OUT!!" She had no answers because now I know it's due to her inexperience and had zero idea of Roscoe's history. I set up an apptment for my husband to come in to retrieve records and get answers and when he showed up this psycho had her phone on record with 3 cops waiting there. WHAT ARE YOU SO AFRAID OF if you're not wrong DR.M! I quietly asked the receptionist when dr. was out of sight if there are other clients who come in here this upset and she said "well, not all the time, but there are definitely some." Also, I realized DR. M did NOT want to give up my records because she knew the X-rays for Roscoe's teeth extraction showed all the periodontitis that they did not inform me of. MALPRACTICE. In the records she also backdated a note saying how much I loved appreciated them and refused VCA vs VERC. " You're an unethical pathological LIAR! I didn't even know who or what VERC was. The specialist Dr.C was unable to save his jaw but $5800to extract more teeth and repair other issues that resulted in him not having his dental issues taken care of. Dr. C said this could have been avoided and usually vets should refer dogs with dental health issues to her . I asked them if they had any referrals from SURF PAWS? answer was NO. SURF PAWS has zero experience in even being able to identify there is an issue to be referred out. We went through so much turmoil and our poor baby will always have broken jaws. I had guilt for putting my dog in the care of SURF paws and trusting them. If you love your pet DO NOT go here. Dr. M, you're just a disappointment as a human. DO BETTER! My dog got her Teeth cleaned, ears cleaned, nails done, and a wart on her toe looked at. They removed the plastic bandage from her arm before picking her up. In my opinion this is a classic job. I recently made an appointment with Surf Paws to have a veterinarian look at my dog's ear that was bothering him. As usual, when something happens to our furry loved ones, we want a vet to take a look at them THAT DAY. Of course it's ridiculous to expect (unless you're at a location that encourages walk-in appointments), but thanks to the helpfulness and kindness of the woman who handles appointments, I was able to get him in the very next day, first thing in the morning. Upon entry, the office was very clean and well-maintained. Staff all greeted us with warm smiles. The exam room is very nice, with huge glass windows looking out to the well-maintained building and its landscape. Dr. Miliaresis entered shortly after to take a look at him. She has a very calm and pleasant demeanor which I feel is so important to make our furry babies feel at ease. After his exam and figuring out what the issue was, Dr. Miliaresis was very good at explaining what needed to be done in terms of treating the yeast infection he had developed in his ear. All the medications I needed were available right at their location which made it so convenient for me. Thank you, Surf Paws, for such a positive experience! We've been going to Surf Paws for a year as we have an aging cat. All was great until today. I get to the office early and sit. A lady was there with a dog she was holding, and she did the whole "my dog loves cats" routine and then placed her dog on the table, looking directly at my scared cat. I got up and moved, and she went into a "Karen" tirade, using the F word and screaming loudly for all to hear. NO ONE IN THE OFFICE DID OR SAID ANYTHING. I sat with my eyes closed until she finally stopped. About 3-4 minutes. I brought my cat today because he is old and dying. My concerns about my cat were ignored as the vet pushed pain meds on me that I knew my cat wouldn't take. I am the one who has lived with him for 17 years. Not her. Yet she pushed and pushed, so I paid for the stupid meds. Then the tech, who was in the office the whole time and heard me repeatedly say that the cat does not do oral meds, told me to put it in his mouth like so. Bloody moron. This vet wants me to prolong a life of a cat who will be in pain just from me forcing meds on him. No empathy at this office at all. We will NEVER go back. read more

Great experience overall (we own a pet rabbit named Toast), with fast, professional, and caring service. Thank you to Dr. Stevens and Staff for the experience we had this morning! We arrived on time to our appointment (which we scheduled somewhat last-minute during the same week) and were welcomed in right away with no awkward waiting or inconveniences at all. The nurse wrote notes on Toasty's prior history and care and then we met Dr. Stevens. It's clear to me that she definitely has a passion for rabbits and was able to handle our rabbit expertly. even touching and rubbing him in places we never knew was possible! She took his weight, listened to his heartbeat, and did a physical and visual inspection of him. All throughout, our rabbit started off startled but quickly calmed down and was resting nicely next to the doctor. She put us all at ease. After explaining to her that we feared he was having GI stasis / digestive issues, she issued a fecal test kit and some probiotics. (We will drop off the sample first thing next week.) Dr. Stevens also took her time to answer all of our questions thoroughly and it never felt rushed. Overall, our appointment lasted about 30 minutes but it was money and time well spent since we were definitely put at ease (after our emergency scare last weekend and how that didn't go as it should have.) We are very happy with our visit to Surf Paws today! Overall, I'd recommend you give them a call, especially if you have a bunny / other exotic animal you want to get checked up. Keep in mind Dr. Stevens only works on Saturdays so definitely plan around that if it's coming up. MAHALO! read more

Our bunny's vet moved to the mainland and left us scrambling for a rabbit savvy vet. A quick check with the House Rabbit Society list of vets brought up Dr. Joe Herzog. Lo and behold he's now at Surf Paws in Hawaii Kai- less than 5 minutes away from our house. It's next to the HPD station near Roy's restaurant. We were concerned that our bunny wasn't eating, lethargic and not pooping. We were able to get an appointment with him the next day (this was Monday). He works on Tuesday and Thursdays.We found the office to be clean, the staff was nice and friendly. Importantly, Dr. Joe did a thorough head to toe exam and told us what to do in addition to prescribing antibiotics. He told us what to expect as far as recovery and she did exactly as he said. The office fee was much less than at our old vet's- surprising for the area. There's no decent insurance coverage so it was much appreciated. Dr.Joe's professionalism and expertise put this bunny parent at ease. Glad to find this place. The only bummer part is they are closed on Sundays. They were so kind & asked us a lot of questions to determine what might have happened & they were spot on with a potential scuffle with another cat who keeps coming in our yard. I've never been hit with a bill that was higher than I thought it would be, and in many cases far less than I expected. A few weeks later our Golden had a eye issue.. blinking tearing etc on Sunday (Hurricane weekend) !!! Monday they fit us in first thing in the morning!! We were so appreciative and Dr Miliaresis checked his eye pressure ( normal) and ordered prescription for Prednisone eye drops! They even called to see how he was doing!!! We chose to move our pet's veterinarian care to Surf Paws after receiving recommendations from a neighbor and colleague, both using the services. Less than a year with Surf Paws and we've been told by the staff and Dr. Miliaresis that the doctor is "too busy" to have a phone consult about our sick pet and, at the time, the earliest availability with the doctor for our pet's follow-up was four days out. Doctor Miliaresis did manage to find time to email during her busy day to reiterate how busy she was, misrepresented what I had conveyed to her staff, recommended performing a chemistry panel for a disease which my dog's breed can be susceptible to, and asked me to let her know my thoughts. I replied same day with clarifications about the current state and overall concerns, noted one of the Surf Paws' prescription medicines had been exhausted, and recommended we understand the root cause of the problem which did not seem to align with the referenced disease (per the AKC website) for which the doctor wanted to test. Absent timely followup from the doctor and given my dog began vomiting blood, I sought urgent care support from another veterinary service who referred me to the Vet ER Clinic in downtown Honolulu (it is one of the few locations on island with an Internist). I also sought support and insight from the AKC organization and the specific breeder club for my dog. Within eighteen hours of reaching out to these entities, we had significant insight to the issues and potential causes based on both research and diagnostic testing. The diagnostic testing yielded good results in that everything was normal and the suspected disease for her breed was eliminated as a cause (she doesn't have it). A strategy has been implemented and my dog, well - she's doing much better. The Surf Paws site states its services include allowing ample time to discuss your concerns with its doctors, providing expert medical care, offering a full range of excellent animal care and providing consultations with board certified specialists. None of these promoted services were presented to us. I've given up expecting the doctor to reply to my email of December 8th. I wonder how it is she could send an email and invite a reply, but either never check for my reply or, worse, read it and chose not to react. More than three weeks have passed and it is time to share this experience, which I am doing here. Surf Paws is effectively fired and they'll never have the opportunity to treat my pet again. read more

After receiving a diagnosis of my dog having a serious musculoskeletal injury, I was referred to Surf Paws for a consultation regarding stem cell therapy. From beginning to end, the folks at Surf Paws were pleasant, professional, and efficient. It was super easy to make the appointment, and my dog and I were promptly greeted upon our arrival in a friendly fashion. We were quickly brought into a room by vet tech Claudia, who was also agreeable and competent. In short order, we met with Dr. M. who was informative, capable, and very helpful. Although as it turned out my dog wasn't a candidate for stem cell therapy, her evaluation was very thorough, and I appreciated her expert opinion and honesty. Surf Paws is located in Hawaii Kai Corporate Plaza in the mauka/'ewa corner of the building, next to the police substation and across the street from the dog park. The facility was very clean, modern, and very nice. The fragrance of a real Christmas tree filled the lobby, and it made an excellent impression. Lastly, my dog was treated to a free trial size bag of Orijen upon my checking in through Yelp! Surf Paws seems like a class act, and I wouldn't hesitate to return should the need arise. I had gone to this vet for a few years. Routine visits were OK, but if I had ever skipped one then they were sure to point it out. It made me very uncomfortable. After the most recent experience though I will never return. I called to inquire about de-clawing my cat. I had explained that he slashed my 1-year old toddlers face for the countless time and that my baby was bleeding from his eye. I had exhausted all other means of prevention and felt that this was the best thing to do. I received a emotionally charged lecture about how inhumane it was to de-claw my cat. I felt this was unprofessional and insensitive to the situation that I was in. They went so far as to say that it was illegal to perform the procedure. This is false, and when I called them out they said "well it is in LA county." Last I checked we live in Hawaii... I don't have a problem with their policy. But to make me feel guilty as a pet owner for protecting my child's precious eye sight? To give me false information to try and support their philosophy? A lack of customer service, professionalism, and integrity are why I will never go back. read more

Dr. M continues to outdo herself. Airmid's entire backside turned flaky, she scratched it and it started to bleed in sections. I was horrified when I found all of this under her fur! I took Airmid to Dr. M and admitted that I didn't know what caused it. The only thing I had done differently was use a designer shampoo. (It had been one of her Christmas gifts by well-meaning people). However, Airmid plays outside in a yard with a hill at the back of the property. The hill is full of "surprises"! Dr. M gave Airmid 14 days worth of pills, and she warned me it might not work because we're not sure what caused Airmid's condition. It's Day 13, I just checked Airmid, and she's completely healed!!! I feel very lucky to have Dr. M as Airmid's vet. :) I threw away the designer shampoo. read more

When our babies (dogs/pets) die, it can be a very emotional time and the little details can really help or worsen our feelings during this time. Of my 6 dogs and two cats, two of my dogs recently passed and with my other dogs before that have passed in my family, I was always asked if I wanted a paw print of my baby with the ashes at the other places and I always said yes. This place didn't ask me so I asked them can you please make sure I get a "hand print of my baby cause I always get that and cherish that" and they corrected me and said "paw print" and responded "of course" so I know they didn't miss hearing me say that. And then on top of that they spelled my last name wrong on the certificate too! I paid almost $300 for the ashes, without my baby's paw print and with our last name spelled wrong too! And they didn't even check that? Very disappointed. And I know it's not the person/techs fault that charged my credit card but she looked at me like she could care less about it like oh well. Let me charge your card and send you on your way! Did I even receive the correct ashes? This totally ruined my day! Never going here again! read more

I make the trip from town to Hawaii Kai because that's just how much we enjoy it there. My parents also bring their pets here and drive in from Aiea. There have been a couple times I had to take my dogs to emergency vet clinics and that's when I truly appreciate Surf Paws. Dr. M and Dr. Herzoff definitely give me piece of mind when taking my pets to see them. I primarily see Dr. M and she is an amazing vet. Sarah and Fran are amazing as well. We have been taking our pets to Surf Paws for a number of years now. The staff is very helpful, I really like vet tech Fran. She's so helpful, kind, and has excellent follow up calls. Dr. Miliaresis is very personable & makes all of us feel comfortable (2 & 4 legged). It is a bright environment that feels open and friendly. I especially like the large windows in the exam rooms. We have one cat that does not like taking pills, and on one occasion I had to drop him in daily for meds and feeding and the techs took great care of him and he was back to his normal self in a few days. read more

Surf Paws is a great place to go if you have a Rabbit. I have tried multiple vets on Oahu and Surf Paws seems to be the only ones who offer professional accurate advice. Not only that, but they showed me they really cared about my concerns for my animal and took what I said into consideration. The staff is very friendly. This will be my go to vet for my rabbit in the future. Thanks to them I was able to figure out why my rabbit was sick when no other veterinary was able to. Dr. Christina TRULY is caring and passionate about animal care. She has a great bedside manner and I love that she offers both traditional and "alternative" treatment options. Her advice and care has helped my anxiety-riden, rescue dog live and thrive. Her staff have been helpful providing great customer service and advice whenever I call with worried questions, putting my mind at ease and saving me money with home care tips. The office is super clean, comfortable, and conveniently located with ample parking. They offer boarding for patients and the majority of the time Dr. Christina personally goes in on her off days to take care of them herself. That's how much she loves these animals!!! We've had dogs for over 20 years and I've been to 7 vets mostly in East Honolulu. I've had my dogs pull hard not wanting to enter offices out of fear. Some vets presented costly options and "by the book" treatments, which amounted to a small fortune and not always necessary. Certain vets place priority on making a good living at the owner's expense. Another smart doctor, was so arrogant he made me feel bad for not giving care up to his high standards. He'd push costly treatments and tests, scaring me with risks if I choose not to do it. Others were great with animals, but lacked bedside manner. One clinic had wonderful doctors, but they are a walk in clinic located in town with limited parking - just not convenient. Dr. Christina is a wonderful doctor and person who will treat your pet as its her own. I highly recommend Surf Paws for you and your pet!!! read more

Very nice clinic. Staff was nice and vet was nice as well; however, the vet spent at most 5 minutes with my puppy that my family just got. Didn't spend any time asking about my dog nor gave any advice or best practices with a new puppy. My old vet used to spend time feeling my dogs back, checking heart rate, looking in ears etc. next time we will be taking our dog too a place where the doctor will spend a little more time with the dog. read more

What a bummer. I was really liking Surf Paws until today when I called to follow up with the doctor on my dog who is not responding to the medication prescribed for her. I can't begin to say more positive things about Dr. M & her wonderful staff. I have 3 vets that I go to regularly for different things but I've been going to Dr. M more and more frequently. She genuinely loves and cares about the animals, is very up to date on all the new treatments, meds, etc. I LOVE that she tries holistic when possible and they do acupuncture! My dogs love going there & she puts them at ease. I recently had a bad experience at another vet for a dog I was caring for & took the dog to Surf Paws instead & he's doing MUCH better there! She gives great care at a fair price & doesn't gouge you for no reason....I dislike when other vets play the fear tactics & go to extremes for no good reason. Thanks Dr. M & your amazing staff! Recently brought my dogs to Oahu, my dogs are my life. Took them to VCA University Hospital due to the free exam visit for first timers. Little did I know every exam after that would cost an arm and a leg. Poncho and Chico needed dental cleaning and they wanted 800-1200 omg not even a human dentist charges that much. I love my dogs but this was not major surgery. Called around and Blue Cross had a 3 month waiting list. Omg... Well a neighbor and I started talking THANK GOD he heard my prayer. Called Surf Paws and nearly fainted how much approximately wow... Shocked beyond belief. Ok calm down I thought they are in Hawaii Kai right must be wrong number location or temp help on the phones. NOT they are the nicest, friendliest, warmest boutique classy veterinarian hospital I have known in 7 years from California, Washington to Hawaii. They really show Aloha to the Animals never had to wait, and the doctor actually educates you and you sense love with your animals there. My name is Kaiolani I am Chico and Ponchos mom, and trust me when I say you have a diamond facility with Surf Paws. Never a wait but there might be after this posting which is fine. All our animals deserve a Surf Paws and the cost is tremendous savings compared to others and the care cannot be matched.
