Have eaten at the Hawkeye MANY times over the last several years. Overall good, but EVERY TIME I order an asian/fusion item from the menu I am disappointed. This has happened time and time again, and happened again on Tuesday evening when I ordered the shrimp tempura appetizer. It was inedible and I asked that it be removed from my bill. We also sent back the mushroom soup as it tasted like lemon - so sent back two dishes from one meal. I am now at the point where I am advising diners to TOTALLY AVOID any Asian/fusion dish that appears on the Hawkeye menu. The chefs do NOT know how to prepare asian dishes. My advice to them is to give up the Asian dishes and stick to what you know, like burgers, steaks, etc. At a lovely and high-class place like the Hawkeye Bar and Grille, I expect better and have been continually disappointed in this particular category. Waited 5 minutes for a hostess to show up, only to ask if we had a reservation and sit us in an empty room inside. Many outdoor tables available and she said they were all reserved. One waiter came by once. We ordered, didn't see him again. They left food with hair in it, walked away so fast. We asked to be moved twice to the emptying outdoor seats, no one confirmed. We should've left. Horrible start to a work trip weekend. Loved this place. We were visiting Cooperstown and not staying at the Otesaga, but it is in walking distance from the main street. We arrived before our reservation, and they were unable to seat us much earlier (they did though, we just waited, no problem) and they turned people away, so definitely get a reservation. Inside there is a nice few of the lake. Service was really great. Because we were there at the start of dinner, we had to wait a bit for the bread, but it was worth the wait. Both the soft roll and the fruity bread were so tasty, and the salty butter spread nicely on them. I had the prime rib, which was tender and flavorful, paired with asparagus and a baked potato. He had a NY strip. Both were perfectly cooked. We were so full and satisfied at the end of the meal that we didn't have room for dessert, but we loved the food so much. It's also pretty reasonably-priced for a nice restaurant. Highly recommend! read more

First of all, the setting is beautiful. We got there early and sat on the outdoor porch overlooking the lake. The restaurant is in the Otesaga Hotel. Service was terrific and there were lots of options on the drink and food menu. I felt as though they charged a bit more than a similar restaurant without the views would have charged. Let's start with the good, the place is amazing and the lake view is beautiful. Now the not so great. The service was terrible. Took 2 hours to get a hamburger and fries. Waiter brought us drinks and never asked if we wanted another one during a 2 hour meal. We had to find the waiter and tell him we had to go after 2 hours. Food was also "mid" it wasn't bad but it certainly wasn't worth the price. Again, the setting is amazing so it might be worth it to go for the view alone. We had a lovely table on the terrace overlooking the lake. I am a strong aficionado of prime rib which I had planned long before we arrived. However, while my dinner partners enjoyed their chicken and fish, I struggled through much more fat than usual, trying to find some edible meat that could be carved. It was so tough, I had to summon the waiter to remove it (the first time I have ever done that in any restaurant). Although he asked me if I wanted something else, my dinner partners were by then finishing their meals, so I opted out. The best cosmopolitan ever! I am visiting my friend in Cooperstown and after a day of shopping, we stopped at the Otesaga Hawkeye Bar & Grill. Started off with calamari and ended with a pizza. The drinks and food were amazing. Our server was fun and actually wrote down the recipe for the cosmopolitan. You can't go wrong at this location with the Otsego Lake in the background. Came for lunch and had excellent service and food. Ordered the whipped hummus and it was so refreshing and tasty. I totally enjoyed my butchers blend cheese burger with goat cheese and hand cut fries. Was a big portion and the meat was great quality. My mom ordered the meatloaf which she loved and the just was a total hit. My friend ordered the tofu and she loved the healthy option and it was beautifully plated and filing for a vegetarian dish. We were so full we didn't even order dessert but overall highly recommend. It's very different experience service wise than a few years back when I came. I'd say it's changed for the better and was very please with the staff checking on our needs vs just the waiter. The Hawkeye Bar and Grill used to be very good. I have eaten there many times and had returned expecting the same quality. Unfortunately this was not so. Upon arriving, we found two ladies doing their best, and at times struggling to manage many potential customer's requests etc. while a man (who turned out to be the manager) worked his way through guests that seemed to be his friends and socialized - not giving any assistance to his workers. While we were waiting for our food, one of the bartenders had the foulest mouth that I had ever heard by a restaurant employee. I told the manager and the problem was corrected. The food - not as good as what I recall from the past. My hamburger had chunks of hard grizzle in the beef, while we requested a plate to be reheated..... it arrived back to the table cold. At that point a pretty much threw my hands up. I also would like to note that the manager seemed a little too touchy at times. There exists an etiquette within the workplace. You work WITH your workers and do not touch your customers when talking with them. It was a little creepy. I will not be returning. read more

I brought my daughter here for dinner. I had the steakhouse burger which was awesome with fries which were ok. She ordered from the kids menu and really enjoyed the house made Mac n cheese, which came with a fresh fruit cup and she chose broccoli as her side and then worms and dirt for desert. She enjoyed all of it and finished everything which never happens! We liked it so much we decided to go back the next day even though we weren't staying at the hotel. We ordered the same things except I got the sweet potato fries well done which were much better than the regular fries. We enjoyed it just as much if not more the second time around. Once was for dinner and the second time for lunch. Both were very nice experiences. Also the prices were great in comparison to most places for the quality of food and ambiance. I really enjoyed staying at the resort, the a Hawkeye was a let down. The service seemed scant which resulted in long waits and snippy service. A group of us wanted to utilize one of the tall tables by the bar but it greatly upset patrons who wanted to sit at the bar and watch football behind us. We asked to shimmy the table out of the way but were told we could not. So we huddled in a corner without enough seating and waited ages for food. read more

It's 2PM on a Tuesday and I am a table of 3. Me my Wife and our 12 year old. "Do you have a reservation?" "No, do I need one?" While I look around and see many open tables. "Not really but we like for guest to make a reservations". We then get taken to our seat next to a bussing station in the back which I thought was deliberate but maybe I'm wrong.. besides that first introduction my visit was 5 stars - they get 4 though on this review. Waitress was nice , tentative and the food very good! I would eat here again yes and do recommend. This restaurant is fantastic. Everything we ate there was excellent. I highly recommend the halibut, I had to eat that twice while we were staying there. They also have excellent homemade ice cream! All the servers are very friendly and professional. The atmosphere is amazing, cozy wood pub inside, gorgeous patio over the lake outside. We came with a large group for lunch on a saturday & had a wonderful time! Sitting outside, the scenery on this gorgeous day was simply breathtaking! I confess I was concerned about the 3.5 star reviews but the food was excellently prepared and the views so beautiful! My son had the smashburger and said it was the best burger he's had ( & he's had a lot - lol!) as it was juicy and he could taste the cheese. and the fries were really good! Husband had the steakhouse burger and I the mezze (I thought the mezze would be more plentiful but it was nicely prepared) & we shared the otesaga greek salad which i enjoyed and hubs thought just ok) Service by Izabela was wonderful! Hawkeye Bar & Grill, located in the Otesaga Hotel, seldom disappoints as it is a professionally run top tier restaurant. All aspects of the experience are well delivered - service, beverages, food quality, etc. and the decor is pleasing. The team is serious and well trained- there are no rookies in this lineup. My swordfish with mashed potatoes and haricot vert was cooked perfectly. The Lemon chicken delivered a huge portion and the cod was excellent. The fish portions were a bit light but acceptable. Cocktails are prepared well and meal delivery was well timed. I think your experience at Hawkeye owes much to being aligned with a top catering establishment that delivers major upscale events. There are few restaurants in town that are worth leaving this hotel for, when you can't get into one of those, this restaurant works. It's a little hard to find/write a review for restaurants in the Otesaga because there are a few of them and people tend to stick their review under the hotel name and not the restaurant name. it's a little similar to the CIA in Hyde Park in that respect. I definitely ate at the Hawkeye, so you can trust this review is accurate (at least as far as location is concerned!). They have an indoor and an outdoor area. Since we went in May, we ate outdoors. It was legit gorgeous. The grounds are impeccable, the view is fantastic, the clientele is relatively upscale, but don't be afraid to come dressed casually, either. It looked like they were setting up for a wedding later in the day (but it was not intrusive; just some staff putting chairs out). The view, weather, and ambiance was perfect. The food was good too- fresh ingredients and well prepared. We tried the Nashville chicken, salads, salmon, steakhouse burger, mac n cheese, fries, drinks, etc. Given the location and ambiance, the prices were not that bad, either- average entree was $16. I would definitely return with the whole family for a beautiful, relaxing meal with a view. read more

The food at this establishment was ok I will say! My shredded steak was more like ground mystery meat it tasted like a moldy taco. the tomato's on my burger were so slimy it fell apart! The restaurant had a lovely interior although the floor was lined with ice cubes just waiting for an elderly local to slip and fall! But the worst part was by far the SERVICE! My dear 181 year old grandma was forced to sit on a chair so high she developed altitude sickness and required a ladder to climb into it was more like a skyscraper than a chair! The unkind waitress forced us to sit there even though other people sat in the lower area. In conclusion we will not be returning. read more

First, we had a big party with a reservation in a very empty restaurant and the hostess "Peggy" was annoyed they couldn't just put us at 2 tables. And then she carried that attitude about the rest of the time. Our server was nice but the service was so slow. It seemed to take an hour to get our food. And the food. Meh. Fish and chips was mostly breading. Burgers looked like they were off a flattop. The Nashville chicken was ok but nothing phenomenal. Caesar salad looked like all romaine ribs and no actual green. Even the iced tea didn't have flavor. Showing how unimpressed this whole place was, the garden salad may have been the best thing. Or whipped ricotta. Just skip the food and have a drink on the deck. This restaurant is heavily patronized by locals and tourists alike for its consistently excellent service and food, and for it's beautiful setting on the lake. Candidates interviewing for hospital positions are taken here for lunches and dinners to share a good impression of the area and it's amenities. In the summer, enjoy dining on the patio overlooking Lake Otsego. During cooler months, they extend the experience with outdoor heaters, and when it's cooler than cool, they put up plexiglass walls. During winter, dining is inside only, and they host international night theme dinners weekly. This place is vegetarian and vegan friendly, and they make great cocktails. The chocolate cake, which they make fresh in-house, is gloriously huge and an indulgence you cannot regret! read more

This place has a comfortable, cozy ambiance. The name of the restaurant makes it sound like a loud sport bar, so I was pleasantly surprised to have an elevated dining experience here. The service is great - not much time waiting and the orders were well-timed and without error. There is an impressive selection of delicious wines by the glass, and the cocktails are also very well done. I had a perfectly stirred Negroni Sbagliato followed by a full bodied wine with tangible notes of black cherry with my dinner. The appetizer, entree, and desserts were so enjoyable. Went to this restaurant on a friends recommendation. Thanked her the next day... We (husband and I) split the special appetizer of beef short rib over two very tasty sauces. It was delicious. I got a burger and he got the prime rib. We both loved our dinners! Their meat is excellent. The burger was enormous and I only got through half of it. Same with his prime rib. The fries that came with the burger were really tasty. The service was spot on. Quick drink delivery, food came out quickly. Fun waitress. Very good experience with the service. Drinks were pricey, but really nice. Good beers on tap too. Very nice wine list. Our dessert was the only part Of the meal that fell a little short. We split the apple crisp in a mason jar. It wasn't very crisp, or very inspiring. Didn't finish it. The room was lively with lots of families filling up the tables. Loads of wait staff working hard.
