I had my wedding here in May, so this will be a long but all encompassing review of all different aspects of the Hawthorne. When I was looking for venues, I wanted all inclusive and one location. I spoke with Christine Madigan via email and then over the phone. She assured me that the Hawthorne did weddings well. We booked, signed contracts, set up a room block and everything. The room block: 3/5 stars I originally worked with Beth who set everything up for me and then was transferred to Rob as positions changed. I initially had 15 rooms in my block which we filled pretty quickly, but I saved one for my husbands grandmother so she could stay onsite. She called to book a room and was told there were no rooms. There were rooms so I called and spoke with Rob because she was pretty upset. He assured me we had rooms and for grandma to call him directly. Evidently the folks at the front desk didn't understand how the room block was intended to work. This happened over and over and over again. I really wish they would have set it up so my guests could book online because I heard from nearly half of my guests that either they couldn't get the days we were promised or the room type they wanted. I even had 3 couples stay at another hotel because of this so Hawthorne lost out on money because they couldn't get their booking system organized. One of my couples ended up in a room with a TWIN BED for 2 people. How is that even possible? Meanwhile I had a single person in a room with 2 queen beds and 2 bathrooms? Like I get accommodating people's requests, but a little critical thinking and communication would have gone a long way for comfort here. I doubt those people will come back to this hotel for this reason, which is sad because its such a lovely place. The menu tasting: 5/5 stars We were invited to a tasting of hors d'oeuvres, dinner selections, wine, cocktails and wedding cake. It was amazing to be able to sample items we wanted to serve without doing so blindly. Their food is phenomenal so we were excited to be able to share this with our guests. Wedding planning: 5/5 stars I received packets of information before booking Hawthorne as my venue, so I was aware of the pricing up front. I was even able to create a quote using their pricing sheet so nothing was a surprise. Christine was available to answer all of my questions throughout the process. As we got closer, she gave us homework to complete so we were ready for our big day. We created a signature mocktail, filled out place cards, went over our timeline, dropped off welcome bags, etc. Everything leading up to our wedding day (outside of booking guest rooms) was super smooth and easy. Pretty much everything was provided by the venue. I only had to book a photographer, content creator, photo booth, DJ and HMU on my own. The rest was handled for me which really made things so much smoother. We ended up well under budget, too! Wedding day: 3.5/5 stars If I could go back, I would hire a dedicated day of coordinator who worked specifically for me and not the venue. Christine was great, and did her job well, but she wasn't dedicated to me the entirety of the evening. And she and my mom were butting heads over things we were promised and not delivered. My mom did my wedding florals. We asked in advance if we could have refrigerator space and a private room to set up in. We were told we could have both, and on the day of, there was magically no fridge space, access to water, or a secure room to work in. It was extremely frustrating to be promised things and then not have those promises fulfilled. We were able to pivot and adapt, but that added so much stress to me on a day where I should not have added stress. The room she was working in was also being used as storage for a wedding the following weekend. The hotel has tons of space so I'm not sure why it had to be there but it seemed at that point it was a battle of wills more than anything. My photo booth company arrived right at the time we were about to start our ceremony, which was planned in advance, but the way the rooms were set up he ended up being in the lobby. This turned out to be really fun for wedding guests and random hotel guests to watch, but it was a bit awkward at first. Some of the items we brought for our reception were not brought down and we had to track people down to retrieve those. There was a room upstairs that was dedicated for us to hide away in and eat our appetizers, but I wanted to be with my guests and the appetizers never made it to me and my husband so I was told they were good but I didn't get to try them all. Dinner was absolutely amazing. However, I heard SO MANY complaints afterward about our bartender. I guess he was rude, and terrible at making drinks and when people tried to go to the other bar they got turned away. Overall I had the best day ever and would do it over again with a few tweaks :) read more

My boyfriend and I recently stayed at the Hawthorne Hotel for a short staycation. We live nearby and chose the hotel specifically for its history, haunted reputation, and because the price point included what we were told would be complimentary breakfast. The room itself was nice and comfortable, and we were surprised (in a good way) to find that it was a double room. In terms of the "haunted" experience, we did hear some tapping noises coming from the closet shortly after settling in. It was definitely spooky, and my boyfriend barely slept, hoping it would happen again--but it didn't. Still, it added to the atmosphere we were looking for. Unfortunately, the experience took a turn the next morning. When we went down for breakfast, we were informed that we needed a voucher or token that we were never given. I went back to the room to call the front desk for clarification and was told that breakfast was only included if you were given a "certificate," which was never explained at booking. My boyfriend then went to speak to the front desk himself, since he made the reservation (even though I was present when it was booked). He was told that no one ever told him breakfast was included, and the interaction felt accusatory--as though he was being accused of lying. This was uncomfortable and disappointing, especially since we booked the stay based on that information. Adding to that discomfort, as we exited the elevator to head to breakfast, we could hear two front desk staff members chatting enthusiastically. When they noticed us, the conversation abruptly stopped, and they stared as we walked by. It created an awkward and unwelcoming feeling. One was a gentleman with longer hair, and the other was a woman with her hair pulled back in a ponytail. The manager was also involved in the conversation with my boyfriend. I do want to highlight the positives: The server at Nathaniel's was extremely kind and pleasant, and another woman working in the restaurant was also warm and helpful. The room itself was nice, and the restaurant service was genuinely the best part of our stay. That said, due to the front desk and management experience, this is not a hotel we would choose to stay at again--neither for the haunted experience nor for the treatment we received. Salem has many hotel options, and while we wanted this stay to be something special, it fell short. We were hoping to leave a glowing review, but aside from the room and restaurant staff, the overall experience left us disappointed. read more

Only good thing about this place was the waiter at the breakfast spot -- he was genuinely kind and professional. Tuesday morning, the manager completely ruined my stay. I was told on two separate occasions that breakfast was included with the room, and when I brought it up she flat-out said I was lying and insisted "nobody would ever say that." That's a horrible way to talk to a paying guest. If it was a misunderstanding, fine -- but accusing me like that instead of checking is unacceptable. Wouldn't stay again. read more

This was the perfect hotel in its prime location. Everything was walking distance and such a beautiful historic hotel. The rooms were clean and nicely kept as best as it can be. The only thing I would say is because the building is in its older state, it would be nice to give it a fresh coat of paint, shampoo rugs, drapes, chairs in the room. You could tell it needs refreshed fabrics. But overall it was a good hotel. read more

Great stay at the Hawthorne--had dinner in the tavern, great food and cocktails. Room was clean. They said it might be hot and they could bring a fan up but temperature was fine. Great location--right in the center. Two things of note--we stayed on the 6th floor, room 622. The 6th floor is the pet-friendly floor (we didn't have any pets), and my husband opened the door to get ice and there was a mini Doberman pinscher (cute!) desperate to get in our room. Then the owner came around the corner and could not figure out why he wanted to get in our room so bad. My husband went in search of the ice and saw the couple with the dog was staying in the room that would be exactly parallel to ours on the other side. I had a great sleep. Husband did as well except around 3 or so he was awoken to a hard poking several times on his shoulder. He said I was dead asleep and facing away so it was not me. We are both FAR from superstitious and don't believe in ghosts etc, so his mind went to someone broke in--but everything was locked up quite securely. He even checked under the bed! After the fact we found out about its ghost stories with specifically the 6th floor--specifically room 612. Again we were room 622, so does 612 (with the doggie) mirror ours? Other people have also mentioned getting poked as well, which we again didn't see about the hotel till after. The Hawthorne Hotel is such a cool spot with its historic charm and reputation for being haunted. While we didn't stay overnight, we attended two events here: the Witches Ball and the Dumb Supper. Both were fantastic, and the food really stood out, especially the lobster bisque at the Dumb Supper. It was thick and velvety and I could have eaten a bucket of it. We enjoyed both events for very different reasons. The ball was full of dancing, drums, amazing costumes and balloon art, and small plates. It was a great party. The supper was a solemn, reverent space that was well-organized and cathartic with a lovely 7 course dinner to go alongside it. The space itself is beautiful, with high ceilings and comfortable furniture that made the events feel elegant yet cozy. The staff was friendly and attentive, making sure everything ran smoothly. We'd love to stay for a proper visit in the future. read more

If you are looking to stay in the heart of Salem in a beautiful historic building then the Hawthorne is your place. This is just steps from Salem Commons, Witch Museum, and all the attractions. This is a National Historic Hotel and is full of charm. The lobby was so inviting with all of its fall decor and coffee/hot apple cider available. There are two restaurants here, but we only dined in Nathaniels for Breakfast. Breakfast was huge portions but good and nice start to the day. We booked an economy room as that was all that was left. However I would not recommend this room unless it is for a single person. The bed is a full size and made for an interesting night of sleep as a couple. The room was very simple and basically a bed and bathroom. The older decor and theme, however, fit well with the hotel and town. We would definitely stay here again but choose a larger room. There is plenty of parking for hotel guests which makes a great perk as parking is not easy to find in town. read more

It's best to come here casual dress, but it is an elegant place and they still have special hors d'oeuvres at 4 o'clock. The drinks are good there the fireplace is nice and warm to sit next to and the people there are all friendly and eager to talk to you plenty of parking in the back give it a try you're gonna like it. read more

We had a great winter stay at the hotel. Our room was so cozy and quiet. The hotel has the perfect old world feel. They have dining and bar options on site, as well as free parking. They also give free passes to the local YCMA. It's so easy to get to many restaurants in the area and museums. Highly recommend Ledger and Pammy's. read more

This review is specific to our dining experience in The Tavern at the Hawthorne Hotel in Salem, MA. --- My husband and I visit Salem often and always dine in The Tavern at The Hawthorn Hotel. Never again. Our wait staff was also tending bar, so not her fault regarding the service. The venue was completely understaffed for a busy Saturday. However, the food has been steadily getting worse with each visit, and the prices are becoming outrageous for what you get. I truly feel this venue has become a tourist trap. I ordered the fried haddock sandwich with a side of slaw. My husband ordered the burger with a side of sweet potato fries. What was brought to the table was a turkey club, instead of the haddock. The server offered to put in a new order, but I accepted the club sandwich because I didn't want to wait another 30 minutes while my husband ate his meal. Big mistake ... the turkey in the sandwich was dry without any flavor, the bacon was burnt, and the barely toasted bread was stale. The bowl of slaw was half full. My husband's burger was definitely food service, unlike what he has been served in the past, and lacked any flavor. But the worst was the fries --- oily, soggy, and barely warm. So ... we won't be going back to The Tavern on our next visit and will be looking for a new favorite place to dine in when visiting Salem. read more

To start, i will say i choose this hotel since it was one of the only ones in the area with in house dining and im so happy i did that because the food at The Tavern is amazing, and breakfast at Nathaniel's each morning was great. It's definitely $$$ but the connivence of it being in the hotel was worth it. After a cold November day, having a meatloaf dinner and huge cheese plate was perfect for warming up before heading to my room for the night. We even had dessert one night and they served us in the lobby and everyone in the restaurants are so kind and top notch. As for the hotel I give it 3.5/5 stars. They gave us a ADA room and I didn't realize it until the last night . I would have preferred a normal room, as the bathroom in the ADA is weird. Instead of 1.5 bathrooms, it had a tub in one room and then all the way in the other side, past the two beds was a room with the sink and toilet. That wouldn't have worked if we had 2 groups of adults as I constantly had to keep running through the room in a towel for my toiletries. It seems like the other rooms have a toilet and sink in the bath room but this doesn't for ADA access. I'm surprised they gave us one of the only 2 rooms without asking. I feel like someone else could have needed it. Besides that, the hotel is historic aka its old. The walls are paper thin. We went mid November and heard some people late at night, but if it was October I bet it would be constantly loud. Additionally, for $300 or more a night I would like a toilet that doesn't need to be flushed with your foot. It was one of those big public flushers I thought maybe it's only in the ADA room but I saw that's every hotel room. They should have used nicer toilets with regular hand flushers. The location of the hotel is perfect, very close to everything and allowed us to use the hotel bathrooms anytime we were out in Essex and needed one. Overall it was nice but I would have expected nicer for the most $$$$ hotel in the area, specifically in the bathrooms. I was comparing this hotel and the waterfront one, but this seemed closer to everything. But actually being here, the waterfront hotel is only 3 blocks away and you can see it from the Hawthorne from door. This was good with a toddler as they gave us these cute wax play things with the children's menu in the two restaurants. And additionally it's right in the Salem common which had a playground. I liked the complimentary cider in the lobby, it really was a nice extra touch. I was dissapointed no mini fridge in room for my daughters milk, but the server at the tavern did say you can request one brought up. It would have been nice if the check in let me know or any of the room fact books. So hotel 3.5/5 as I would have bumped it to 4 if it were cheaper off season (mid November $300 night) I think $250/$200 I would have liked it more. And 5/5 for their in house restaurant. read more

We did not stay in the hotel, but we had lunch in the hotel bar and restaurant, we ordered three different appetizers, a cocktail, one mocktail, and I loved it! I know a lot of it is the haunted history of the hotel that brought us there, but if ever in Salem again, and there is hotel availability, I would consider staying there. As far as the food goes, it was actually surprisingly very good for how busy they were and I felt bad for our server, she was running around, crazy trying to attend to too many tables. read more

We stayed one night, mostly for the haunted/historical aspect. We were in a single king room on the second floor. Maybe we just had bad luck, but... The bed was horrible. It clunked loudly every time we moved, and it was the most uncomfortable bed I've ever slept in. My husband didn't sleep at all because of it. The bathroom is way too narrow. We bashed our knees on the toilet every time we walked in and out. And I don't know who works in the offices across the hall but they were so rude. At 6am they were loudly banging things around as if they didn't know there were people sleeping across the hall. Maybe it was the ghosts. read more

I made a lunch reservation in the Tavern several days in advance -- eager to show some visiting relatives this wonderful and historic room. We arrived 5 minutes before our time (12:45 on a Sunday), I notified the hostess, who told me that the party at our table was "lingering over the check", but should only be a few minutes. 45 minutes later, after gentling nudging the hostess several times, we were finally seated at a table for 4 (we were 5, but made it work). Either "lingering over the check" was untrue, or the hostesses don't know how to inform a party that the table was reserved and they can move their conversation to the bar, or the lobby. I get it that September and October are busy in Salem, WHICH IS WHY WE MADE THE RESERVATION. A 45-minute delay for a reserved table is just ridiculous. Walk-ins got in quicker than we did. Food was great, service was lovely but slow (again, expected in September), but dining room control is lacking. read more

Historic hotels are so much more fun than chains. The Hawthorne is beautiful inside and out. Our room was perfect for a weekend getaway. The bathroom was small but worked just fine. The Tavern and Nathaniel both looked like fun but we ran out of time and didn't get to stop in. The hotel gift shop had great souvenirs! This hotel parking was excellent and we were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go on Friday/Saturday. If you're looking for a clean, charming, historical place to land after exploring Salem... definitely stay at the Hawthorne. We are already planning a trip back. read more

My family was from the area so we visit the hawthorn during Christmas for nostalgia. The brunch this year was 85$ per person which added up so we were hoping the food would at least be good. However this year was a worse selection than the last and the meat was so rough we struggled to bite through it. Generally was not worth the price and this may be our last Christmas there. Location , location, location! The Hawthorne's location is great! So close to all the main attractions, shops and restaurants. It is a very pretty historic hotel. Staff was amazing and very welcoming! Now,again, this is a historic hotel, that's 100 years old, so you are going to get older carpets, older bathrooms, older aesthetics and of course...the smell of an older building. Not that this is a bad thing, I honestly loved the experience. We stayed for one night, and were able to get an upgrade to the 6th floor(most haunted floor haha) with an amazing view of the Witch Museum. read more

I decided to do my own solo thing for Thanksgiving this year, and stayed at the Hawthorne for two nights. I can honestly say I wish it had been at least one night more, and I look forward to coming back. The food was incredible, the service was very friendly and attentive. I had a slight issue with my room - it was because I booked on Priceline, and was a small snafu. The front desk was able to resolve it very quickly and get me into a bigger room, no questions asked. It was very classy treatment, especially on a day that they were very busy with all the Thanksgiving guests. I have been to both restaurants and enjoyed many events, including weddings, in the beautiful and historic ballroom. Never a dull moment at the Hawthorne! I love the Tavern especially in the winter when they often have a real, crackling wood fire in the fireplace, which is a rarity these days. When you walk into the lobby, you are transported to an earlier time; it's romantic and upscale. The food in the restaurants is great, and they mix a generous drink. The staff is always kind, polite, and helpful, even during October's chaos. I've been a neighbor of the Hawthorne Hotel for many years, and I'm sending warm congratulations on its 100th anniversary. read more

Another excellent experience at the Hawthorne Hotel! The rooms are charming, and the location, in the center of town, is so convenient. The onsite Tavern and Nathaniel Restaurants are a great way to start or end your day, and the hotel staff could not be more accommodating, especially Aliviya Williams! As I've previously noted within my initial review, it was already mentioned and I've provided a copy of the slip showing the toilet was fixed. The issue is how long it took to be fixed, the inconvenience of having a consistently running toilet, a room with poor electrical supply, bad HVAC, overall cleanliness and the rug separation where it meets at the bathroom is lifting up visibly (tripping hazard). By your (Claire's) response, it's evident the room was not inspected for the items mentioned above and overall customer satisfaction is not a focal point for this hotel. As this review and my email to you was an attempt to rectify the situation and provide a remedied solution, as advised by your front desk staff that would occur, I will be contacting my credit card company to assist further. read more

I usually love to stay at the Hawthorne. For dinner we went to Nathaniel's, lovely atmosphere, but the wait time is horrendous!!!Ordered food at 6:30/6:40 ish and it came out at 7:30. The staff was so exceptional and friendly, I extended my stay 3 days. I was on a "me time" vacation and was treated like family. The rooms were clean and well kept. They have a coffee station in the morning also, an in house breakfast restaurant. If you're looking for a drink and lunch/dinner the Tavern is terrific. I ate there 3 times, their burger is phenomenal and the wings were tasty. Tavern staff were friendly, efficient and just plain nice. We've been coming to Salem for many years and finally got to stay at the a Hawthorne Hotel! Our room was a double queen suite and spacious on the famous 6th floor! The first night my teenage daughters asked to go down and explore the lobby while I took a much needed nap. My daughters closed the door to our room and when I woke up about an hour later my door was open! Talk about being spooked! I went to the lobby where I encountered another guest who was having a hard time getting her beautiful Newfoundland dog into the elevator and the dog refused to go up the stairs as well. She finally got her dog up with the help of the front desk staff. The staff here are all so accommodating. One of the housekeepers (Betania) asked us did we need anything at all from towels or soaps... so very kind and nice of her. Our beds were comfortable and the only thing I can say is that our bathroom was tiny but that's ok. On the ride to Salem my car sensor came on saying my tire pressure was low. I asked Brynn from front desk where I could take my car and she directed me to a local BP service station and they didn't even charge me to check my tires and sensor. I must also add that the Hawthorne Hotel has amazing staff that are incredibly friendly and helpful! We really enjoyed talking to Taylor, Brynn, to name a few! Can't wait to stay here again! I'm so glad we got to stay at this historical hotel. We loved every minute of it! Off peak prices are so worth it! We will definitely return! read more

They claim that the 3floor and 6 floor is haunted Im in room 509 i have to say no i didnt see any spirits. I never knew it was declared haunted. If my wife knew i know for a fact she would not of booked a room here. Last night at 2am i received a message on my phone that adt alarm was having an issue so i was awake and very sleepy so i roughly went to sleep about 230 245 am. I was dreaming some really insane stuff i was having night tremors i finally woke myself out of fear. I felt lured to the the very big walk in closet that has a window like i had to go. It was very strange feeling. I had this impulse to look out the window for some reason. I didnt see nothing but i felt like someone was with me and wanted me to look out the window and they was sad about what was out the window. Im very sensitive to certain things i force myself not to believe in spiritual things and over and over again im proven there is a spiritual world we live in. I went to the bar had some wine to help me sleep. I will post again about any experience i may have. Im not going to make up some paranoid spooky story but ill tell you this i will only post the truth . I felt something or someones presence in this room Last night so i had a two glasses of wine because i really need to sleep. I really don't want anything to keep me awake i pray nothing cones into my dreams either. There is definitely a presence here but i didn't come here for that nor too right now. I had many encounters even with professionals that look out for spiritual things that give tours but i was just there for the tours because of my wife. I even knew things that the tour guides didn't even expose the guest to. I have went to a guide and told them my feelings and they were in shock on what i had to say and how the heck did i know. when there is absolutely no information anywhere on certain things on tours in another state. Im still in some what in denial because I really don't want believe in the spiritual world and really want to stay away from it. But there are to many coincidences. Not to be true. So here iam in room 509 and im telling you i feel a presence trying to point out something to me or just annoying the heck out of me. I still dont want to believe. If anything happens or anymore weird stuff happens ill post it. But i have a good buzz now so i could sleep i dont want to experience no more stuff i am tired. read more

My wife and I travel extensively for both business and leisure. Having moved to NH last November, we decided to splurge for our anniversary to experience downtown Salem during Halloween season. I've never paid over $600/night for a hotel, but it was centrally located and we could park there. The room was decorated well for its historic nature, and had a nice amount of space. It was well soundproofed despite the crowds and traffic right outside. The bed was comfortable, a critical criteria for us. A few problems however: the phones didn't work - I made the joke about them "going dead" but I had to call reception from my cell to ask for extra towels. The room had to our happiness a Keurig...which to our frustration couldn't make two cups in a row, and after having it replaced...the next one couldn't either. Coffee without interaction is a second criteria. The shower was inconsistent in its temperature; even though at 10am it kept cycling cold and hot on the same setting. A good consistent shower is a third criteria. Finally the WiFi signal kept cycling on and off throughout the day. Finally I just had to give up and use cell signal. When I complained about all these upon checkout to the morning manager (10/26/24), she responded "well no one has complained about these before". No apology. Final criteria: customer service. We should have stayed at the Springhill Suites for half the price, are at the full Marriott for the same price and Ubered in. At least all criteria would have been satisfactory and my status would have ensured customer service. Update since my review: the director of rooms emailed me and was apologetic and I felt honestly wanted to make changes because of my review. First, let me preface by saying that having grown up in Boston, I always LOVED Salem and was elated to have the opportunity to stay here for two nights at this storied hotel, known for it's beloved Bewitched lore, a TV show that I grew up with as a kid. Given it was graduation weekend throughout the Boston area, the rates here were actually pretty reasonable compared with Downtown Boston, or even areas like Dedham and Braintree, so I decided to fulfill a longtime dream and stay at the Hawthorne and explore the wonders of Salem at my leisure. I will say, that while the room left a bit to be desired size wise, and a climate system that only gave you the option of low, medium or high fan, it was otherwise well appointed and comfortable, albeit lacking any noteworthy view from its 4th floor window. What I was, however most incensed by was the fact the TV remote did not work and when I went down to the front desk, they asked me, rather imperiously. "Well, did you push the button under the front of the TV to turn it on and enable the remote?" I think having to push anything on the actual TV defeats the whole purpose of something actually called 'A REMOTE!" So I went back, pressed the button and still noting happened. As I was going to go to dinner with friends, I didn't have time to troubleshoot their electronics, so I called the front desk and they said they would send somebody up with batteries (As I think might have been a good idea to begin with) for the remote and try again. Make a long story short, I came back to the room, the TV was on, I was able to change the channels but could not turn off the TV, so for my two day stay, the TV was on 24 hours a day, and I had to turn the volume to 0 when I went to sleep; fortunately the light of the TV was rather comforting. Upon checkout, I told the front desk clerk and she kind of giggled and said, "Oh, sorry about that." Honestly, expected better from such a venerable hotel. read more

The food here was okay, the gluten free options were not very comprehensive, but the drinks were really good! The environment was super cool, very antique, and the chairs were unbelievably comfortable! It does not get very loud, so it is perfect for someone who gets overstimulated in most bars! read more

We drove up from Pennsylvania and took Mom for breakfast at the Hawthorne Hotel for her 86th Birthday last Wednesday. Very nice dining room, excellent service, and food. We will definitely be back! read more

The cheese board was a bit disappointing. Lots of bread, grapes (menu said pickled grapes, but they were not) and maybe 3 peices of x-small cheese prices and not on a board, but a dinner plate. I am extremely disappointed as I love the Tavern bar at the Hawthorne Hotel, and this was extremely bad. read more
