Well, this is the best hotel I've ever stayed in. We had a late check-in and the process was seamless and the entire property was beautiful, clean, and safe. There is some road noise (Washington is a thoroughfare) but the windows are double-paned and even the road-facing rooms are quiet. I'm a light sleeper and the noise didn't bother me - more like a gentle hum. In our one-night stay, I received several text messages (my preferred way of communicating) from the staff, checking in and giving me pertinent info about check-in, check out, etc. The room doors are very secure, and even though the property is old, it was incredibly clean and felt very sturdy and safe. This place is a wonderful bolthole from which to explore Salem, and The Merchant is a destination in itself - we'll definitely be back! Thank you to the wonderful staff!

currently staying at the merchant ~ above and beyond impressed with the communication of the staff - the condition of the hotel - and the unique and special details. everything you could want in a hotel. from the coffee maker to the bathrooms - to the beds - it's immaculate - everything is literally perfect. we will absolutely be back.

Absolutely loved it! It's exceeded all our expectations. Room was beautiful and the staff was friendly and helpful! Highly recommend!

Absolutely loves staying here! We come to Salem every year and looked forward to staying in this historic home. The property is beautiful! We were greeted by warm and friendly staff that were extremely helpful. The Washington room was stunning! The decor was incredible and the gas fireplace and heated floors made it extra special. It's totally exceeded our expectations! We also loved the complementary coffee in the morning and cookies at night!!! Their attention to every detail made our stay one of the most memorable yet. We are already planning next year!!! Highly recommend!!!!

A great place to stay right in the heart of Salem. The hotel is close to everything you could possibly want to see while in town. Our room was number one on the first level. It was incredibly spacious, had a nice seating area, and a gas fireplace. Parking is either on-site for a fee, or short walk away for free. There is a lovely main seating area where you can enjoy a boardgame, have a beverage or snack from the snack area, or just relax and chat with your friends. Breakfast was included and was delightful. It consisted of several small plate choices from avocado toast, to overnight yogurt, to mini quiches. My only two critiques were that every staff member was warm and friendly except one older female manager who seemed very unfriendly and smug each time she interacted with guests. The other would be that the snack area could use a bit of variety. Each time we checked it out the snacks were oranges, 100 calorie pretzel packs, seltzer water, and plain popcorn. Sometimes guests may want to cheat a bit on their diets while on vacation....

Fireplace in the King Suite --guitar not included with the room!

Great location--right in the center. Two things of note--we stayed on the 6th floor, room 622. The 6th floor is the pet-friendly floor (we didn't have any pets), and my husband opened the door to get ice and there was a mini Doberman pinscher (cute!) desperate to get in our room. Then the owner came around the corner and could not figure out why he wanted to get in our room so bad. My husband went in search of the ice and saw the couple with the dog was staying in the room that would be exactly parallel to ours on the other side. I had a great sleep. Husband did as well except around 3 or so he was awoken to a hard poking several times on his shoulder. He said I was dead asleep and facing away so it was not me. We are both FAR from superstitious and don't believe in ghosts etc, so his mind went to someone broke in--but everything was locked up quite securely. He even checked under the bed! After the fact we found out about its ghost stories with specifically the 6th floor--specifically room 612. Again we were room 622, so does 612 (with the doggie) mirror ours? Other people have also mentioned getting poked as well, which we again didn't see about the hotel till after. So between the desperate dog and the poke, probably nothing--but most creeped out I've been in a while!! (Not so creeped out that we wouldn't go back!)

We all stop what we we were doing and walked safely to this hotel. I went to the front desk to let the lady working on July 9 around midnight about this guest being lost, and she was extremely rude, annoyed and told me that she the guest has been calling the hotel for three hours asking for help. The lady who is working, the Front Desk has short gray hair and was very rude and obviously did not care about a guest at this hotel. If a guest is lost, wouldn't it be the right thing to do by assisting them instead of complaining about a loss elderly guest who was a retired school teacher? When other people in the hotel were leaving, the same lady was talking to another lady about the guest and talking about how rude they were and how much they were drinking, though when I was there, I did not witness any of this. When I recommend going to this hotel based off of the people who represent this Brand, the answer is no.

We did have a car, and while the attached garage made things convenient, the daily parking fee felt high for what it is (almost $30 a day). Just a heads-up. Also, there is self-park, and at risk of sounding cheap, here's a tip to save you on some tips... valet is optional, and I don't think I've ever been in a hotel where it's less necessary. Self-park is the same price, but you spare yourself the constant tipping, which feels like one more tiny cash grab unless maybe the garage fills up at certain times and they have to move cars elsewhere. The room was nice enough for a short stay, though some acceptable / common deficiencies are starting to show -- scuffed walls, certain outlets loosening up so the prongs don't stay in well, one bulb burned out, etc. But the beds were comfortable enough, the bedding seemed clean, the bathroom was also clean and the shower worked well, and the room overall still had a reasonably new look and style to it. The pool was also clean, warm, and the overall pool area looked well maintained with plenty of clean towels available and a good amount of seating. The pool deck definitely gets a little slick when wet, so watch your step. Breakfast was almost exactly what you'd expect from similar U.S. chain hotels -- pre-made omelets or scrambled eggs depending on the day, home fries, paper-thin bacon or sausage patties, a few cereals and yogurts, a make-your-own waffle station, a couple fruit options, a push-button juice machine, instant oatmeal, etc. There's a good amount of seating, and a handful of tables have their own TVs (though you may have to hunt for a remote, and you might get some cross-room interference if someone else points theirs the wrong way). One interesting detail: breakfast isn't on the ground floor, and you can't reach it via the elevator without a keycard. I assume that's intentional to reduce non-guest walk-ins. Overall, I'd stay here again for the location and reasonable price -- just with the caveat to budget for the nearly $30/day parking or have a workaround ready. The convenience makes it tolerable, but it's definitely something to be aware of.

Our room was an imperial king suite and I absolutely recommend this if you are a couple looking to have a nice relaxing stay or if you just want a spacious room with a separate bedroom, living room room and a wonderful bathroom! The central location makes it easy to walk to restaurants, shops, and musems. That central location in mind, parking is going to cost you as it isn't available on the hotel property. You're going to have to carry your luggage from wherever you find parking, which wasn't a problem for a short stay. We ponied up for a king suite and a private bathroom. That bathroom, however, has a floating barn door so you better be really comfortable with your travel companion because you're going to hear everything. Speaking of hearing everything, the walls are kinda thin (despite the being in a corner room). The bed was comfortable but some of the furniture in our room was looking pretty worn, particularly the wood on the side tables. It was nice to have a fridge, but the lack of a coffee maker in the room is a bit perplexing. My husband and I found the TV system annoying. There wasn't traditional cable and multiple possible past guests left their streaming services connected to the TV. The TV would pick up on anyone trying to connect via their iPhone in other rooms, interrupting whatever we were watching. We now have an inside joke about Vanessa's iPhone. Sorry about your connection issues, Vanessa. Over all, it was a comfortable, safe place to lay our heads. Staff were very friendly and helpful. I'm not sure if we'll be back.
