Hotel Salem is the perfect location to experience Salem to the fullest! Rooms are modern and spacious. The staff is friendly and helpful as soon as you check in. The rooftop and restaurant on the first floor are wonderful amenities. I don't think we will be booking anywhere else when we return. read more

My first stay at The Hotel Salem was a mixed bag. Three and half stars, if that were possible. Somethings that detracted from my experience were beyond the control of the hotel (e.g., loud, belligerent drunks on the street waking us up), but some could be amended in the future. The central location makes it easy to walk to restaurants, shops, and musems. That central location in mind, parking is going to cost you as it isn't available on the hotel property. You're going to have to carry your luggage from wherever you find parking, which wasn't a problem for a short stay. We ponied up for a king suite and a private bathroom. That bathroom, however, has a floating barn door so you better be really comfortable with your travel companion because you're going to hear everything. Speaking of hearing everything, the walls are kinda thin (despite the being in a corner room). The bed was comfortable but some of the furniture in our room was looking pretty worn, particularly the wood on the side tables. It was nice to have a fridge, but the lack of a coffee maker in the room is a bit perplexing. My husband and I found the TV system annoying. There wasn't traditional cable and multiple possible past guests left their streaming services connected to the TV. The TV would pick up on anyone trying to connect via their iPhone in other rooms, interrupting whatever we were watching. We now have an inside joke about Vanessa's iPhone. Sorry about your connection issues, Vanessa. Over all, it was a comfortable, safe place to lay our heads. Staff were very friendly and helpful. I'm not sure if we'll be back. read more

The bright, airy space with big windows looking out on to the pedestrian plaza makes the bar-and-restaurant area an easy option to select on a recent stroll through the area. The seating definitely has a hotel-lobby vibe to it (unsurprisingly, since it is, in fact, a hotel lobby) but it is both comfortable and chic. That's not an easy combination! Our server forgot my kid's drink but quickly rectified the situation when asked. We ordered pizza, and it was fresh, hot and delicious! The beer on tap was also very good. We'd be back! read more

The location is great with easy access to all the shops downtown. We would definitely stay here again but we have some things we think could be improved on. Pros- Great location Staff is extremely helpful and friendly. Decor and overall style is amazing Two restaurant options in house Water and coffee stations on each level Cons: Basically the entire bathroom needs some improving. The door is a flawed design with open cracks on either side that limit privacy. Our door wouldn't stay shut so we used a chair to keep it shut. It's kinda my nightmare for others to hear me using the restroom. There's no shower door so the water is getting everywhere which seems like a pretty big fall hazard. And I'd imagine mildew/mold. The sink could use some more storage space underneath. And what's wrong with having a bathroom fan?? The lights in the room are kinda harsh. Especially the hanging light bulbs on each bed side. I really enjoy the hotel nightstands that have the lamp on them and ability to charge phones/etc. the outlets are low to the floor. The Hotel Salem is all location, location, location! Coming to Salem for Halloween two weeks before October is hectic. I read all about the craziness before I booked my flights and hotel so I already knew what to expect. I actually came upon the Hotel Salem because it was one of the few hotels in Salem that had rooms for the weekend. It was very expensive, 4-5x their normal rate for an average night that is not October. But, wanting to experience Salem in October as a once in a lifetime trip, I pulled the plug. The location is unbeatable, walking distance to everything! Hotel itself was 3.5 stars. Though it was remodeled, thing are pretty used. The window blinds would not pull anymore up (see photo attached) to get better views. It was stuck and/or broken. The windowsill was all scratched and dinged up as with the bathroom farm sliding door (see photo attached). The shower tiles are molded in various areas with broken tiles too (see photo attached). Speaking of the shower, the hot water waxes and wanes. One minute you get hot then you get lukewarm. I also found ripped bedsheets (see photo attached). Definitely could use a mini facelift to fix various things throughout the rooms. However, the customer service was great downstairs. I appreciated the calls/emails/texts with reminders before, during and after our stay. I appreciated that you can reach someone at the front desk if you needed anything (Kleenex, a hot tea, umbrella). Found this hotel on Booking.com and was able to secure a room for Friday night on very little notice. Then again, tourism is probably low in Salem in March. Very communicative staff (almost too much) - with emails, phone calls, messages about our upcoming stay. I'm very much a business traveler so I'm always caught off guard when there is that added layer of "service". This is located in a prime location and there is no associated parking on site. We were easily able to find a parking lot 3 minute walk away with meters and app parking and so that ended up fine without need to find a $50 overnight solution. The 1st floor room we were in was lovely and so much bigger than the tiny 300 year old inn we stayed in while in Vermont. I loved the super high ceilings. We had only 1 night here and it was comfortable, great location and very friendly staff. The bubbly water on tap right outside our room was also a nice touch. The reception desk is a bit awkward as you walk through a restaurant .... but they all seem used to this b/c if they see you standing outside awkwardly with luggage, the restaurant and hotel staff all wave you in! read more

UPDATE: I chose to leave my original review up because it truly was a place to bring my family Every Halloween weekend ... unfortunately after this past Halloween I will never be coming back to this hotel ... at 930 pm Halloween night we realized our room was being fumigated with weed smoke with my wife and 2 small children .. we went to the front desk to explain what was going on and the person came into the room and said it was coming from the alley and at 10 pm the police will push everyone of Essex street... they offered a small discount and to put a fan in our room ... the fan they brought was broke and in the meantime of us removing some of our luggage to take a walk to hopefully let the room air out (it's now about 10 pm ) someone grabs my sons Nintendo switch in the hallway! (I demanded to see the video footage because it was in the hallway for only 3 minutes and it magically was turned in by "someone" At this point my wife has a contact high / my kids are crying because they have a headache from the smoke and I admittedly was extremely upset and should have handled my self better ..I did NOT approach the front desk enraged I asked for help and when the bar manager / front desk supervisor could care less and basically was like it's Salem on Halloween this is what happens here ... we had 2 neighbors on the suit floors who had to Leave with there family to get away from The smoke and were horrified ... one of them said they saw a STAFF member in the alley getting high contributing to the smoke going in the rooms. This is NOT a family friendly hotel ! They have homeless people across the street who harass you when you walk by .. it was never like this in the past ... this place has gone way down hill in the last few years ... there is tons of other nice hotels with nice rooms that care about the quality of your stay ... I spoke with the manager the following morning and she tried to tell me I checked out when I was KICKED out at 11 pm on Halloween night so they don't have to reimburse money of some sort .. she also said she was done with the conversation and HUNG UP on me .. I was in there most expensive room on most expensive weekend ... please read my last reviews they are a 2-3 star hotel at best .. they have a great location ... we weren't expecting perfect we were expecting decency .... Mega cute boutique hotel. Greeted by friendly local staff. This hotel sits in an excellent location in the middle of everything. The rooms are spacious with some having stairs to their beds. Pillows could be firmer, but the beds are comfortable. Not much of a view from the third floor, but lovely views on their roof top bar. Nice drinks and tasty churros. We went to an event in the Cellar. (The basement of the hotel) The acoustics were so bad, my hearing was distorted for days. We went to the Rooftop bar after event ended. No one was served a cocktail as it was considered 'double serving'? What is this 'double serving'??? We were all consenting adults and would have liked to order another cocktail. Service was sub par. Beautiful boutique hotel in the heart of downtown Salem, MA. Very welcoming and friendly staff with great recommendations for food, shopping, tourist things. I had a micro king room. Small room but perfect size for my solo trip. The location was perfect and very walkable. My friend recommended this hotel and I highly recommend it as well. Very clean and love the water options on each floor. Ate at the roof top restaurant and the counter restaurant. The best smash burger I tried in Salem. 10/10. Delicious. My fiancé reached out to him the week prior to our engagement so he could devise a plan. Our one year anniversary was October 1st and he wanted to propose on the roof deck here (the place we made it official the year prior!) The roof deck was closed this day because the weather wasn't great. Tony still made sure we were able to get up there just to take a few "pictures". Turns out my boyfriend was getting down on one knee !!! The roof deck here is a gorgeous spot. Nothing else like it in salem!! Room is a big exaggeration for what we had. It was hall with a bed crammed against the wall at the end. It took about 10 minutes to get hot water to the room. The place is beat. Bathroom set up is bizarre toilet in one room sink and shower in another room across the hall. Sinks are put in the lavatory for a reason to wash your hand's before leaving. Can only imagine the amount of human waste on both doors.Once you are in the room with the sink there is no hot water coming out of the faucet. The shower had a lack of hot water... lukewarm at best. I had to attend a wedding in July of 2025 at the Crane Estate in Ipswich, MA. I stayed at a different hotel for what was suppose to be 2 nights, I loved Salem so much that I extended my stay for another 3 nights and I would have stayed at the same hotel but there were no more vacancies so I actually found The Hotel Salem by good fortune. It was quite different than any hotel I've ever stayed at, it was modern and quite perfect in it's location. I loved the room I stayed in, I would call it almost eclectic, but very comfortable. Again, I would have extended my stay but they were booked and I realized I had to face reality, so I packed my belongings and wished my little get away to Salem good bye. Location, Location, Location! That's what you pay for and it's worth it. It's literally walking distance to everything you could possibly want to do in Salem. It also has a rooftop bar and hotel guests get top priority for seating. The rooms were comfortable but the elevators smelled of puke the entire 3 days we were there. There's no breakfast restaurant in the hotel but the do have some free coffee on the first floor. Also no water in the rooms - you need to.ask for a glass at the bar and then go to a water dispenser on your floor which theoretical dispenses sparkling and still water. I told the manager the sparkling water was not working on our floor and it didn't get fixed the entire 3 days. read more

The Hostess's were so unprofessional and rude- we waited on the line for 40 minutes which we were happy to do, they then came over and offered us a seat downstairs which we obliged without informing us that there was a completely different and limited menu. Beautiful hotel, fantastic customer service especially Kaleigh! The decor is beautiful, the beds are comfortable and the rooms are exquisite. We had the Lark Suite, as well as, the King w/ trundle bed. The hotel is perfectly placed in the heart of Salem, you cannot pull up and drop off luggage but there is parking just around the corner super convenient. If I could change a couple things it would be less air conditioning I know it may sound weird because it's august but I had it turned off and it was still blowing . The tv was a bit small for the distance from bed to wall . For context, I stayed in room 206 for a few nights just after Halloween. I arrived about 2 hours prior to check-in and unfortunately they did not have a room available yet(understandable since I was early and checking in the day after Halloween), but they were able to hold my bags while I went out and about and grabbed a late lunch and started exploring the town. When I came back right at check-in time they let me know they upgraded me to a larger room due to a heating issue in the room I had originally booked, so my review will be based on the larger King room (as opposed to the Micro-King I originally booked). The room was exceptionally spacious, more than enough room to get in a good Pilates/yoga/stretching session and fully unpack multiple full-sized pieces of luggage. There was space to hang items (they also had robes in the room, I didn't use them, but they looked nice, soft, and clean to the naked eye) and a full-sized dresser to store your folded clothing, however I will note there was no full-length mirror in the room. There was a desk with a chair and in the opposite corner a lounge chair and end table if you were to enjoy a drink or a snack in your room. In between, there was the TV hung on the wall and across from that was the ultra-comfy bed with end tables on either side, both equipped with an outlet and USB plugs, plus a little alarm clock/radio/speaker (my favorite part of this room!). The toilet was in a separate water closet across from the room with the shower and sink, a touch strange given that if someone else was showering, you would still have to walk in on them to wash your hands after using the restroom, plus the doors to these rooms were sliding farm-style doors so if you are traveling with a friend or partner they will absolutely hear everything you are doing. I was disappointed in the quality of the toilet paper, it was the thin single-ply type you are familiar with in public restrooms and I almost went out to buy my own from the CVS across the street because it was so unpleasant to use. Note for those who wear makeup, definitely bring your own makeup mirror and sit by the window to apply, the lighting in the water closet and the shower room are both atrocious because all the light comes from above and casts shadows down on you. It's also difficult to get closer to the mirror for detailed eyeshadow or eyeliner, so save yourself the aggravation and just bring a little light up mirror with you. The amenities included in the room (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, bar soap, moisturizer) were all high quality and left me feeling clean and moisturized! I also highly appreciated having the mini fridge in the room as well to store extra bottles of water or leftovers from dinner, however it never seemed to get very cold, it was just enough to put a chill on a beverage, but not much else. There is no mini bar, but there was a slip of paper that listed some premade cocktails in a can, small bottles of wine, and non-alcoholic bottled beverages for purchase, just had to call the phone number and they would bring them right up to your room, however I never utilized this. I stayed on the second floor and at the end of the hall there is a set-up by the stairs with a filtered water machine and some small glass jugs to fill up and take back to your room (cups already in the room) which I highly appreciated. There was apparently tea and coffee available in the morning downstairs, but I never happened to catch it/pay attention to it. Overall the room was mostly clean when I arrived (there was a cork from a bottle of sparkling wine on the floor near the door, but everything else appeared to be clean) and all of the hotel staff I interacted with were kind and very accommodating, next time I come back to Salem I will absolutely stay again at The Hotel Salem and hope they can make some small tweaks to better the experience, but perhaps will book for August or September since many of the shops and restaurants close right after Halloween for deep cleaning and inventory checks. read more

This is a beautiful hotel in downtown salem. But don't ask to have drinks up on the roof. The drinks were pretty good the waitress was wonderful However we wanted to have a few people come there for drinks on aThursday night 8 -10. At first it was a thousand dollars rental plus a minimum of three thousand dollars. Once that was taken it was 15K for 2 hours. Hahaha The event coordinator basically gave us a kiss off price. Nice!! I guess you guys are fancy pants because you're owned by Lark hotels now and our $3000 for 2 hours wasn't good. Enough for you good luck with that. Really disappointed in this property. First of all, customer service in a hotel should be top notch. We're paying to stay at your property you should be grateful. Instead the staff was extremely rude and stale. No one is ever at the front desk when you need and the rooms have no phones to contact front desks. The rooms are literally falling apart. No hot water. Shower faucet extremely loose and falling off wall. Thee worst water pressure, not joking. It drips out of the sink faucet. Flat pillows. Stuff beds. Dirty. And I mean dirty. Dust everywhere, dead bugs on windows. Stained floors. Stained walls. Very confusing how they run a business like this ‍‍ The walls are extremely THIN. Not to mention huge gaps under doors to hallway. Expect to be woken up by vacuums and people slamming doors at 8AM on a Saturday. Also whoever was above us must've had a kid or animal running around and stomping until 1AM. The only great part is the location. This was our second stay at the Hotel Salem. We first stayed here when they first opened, and we loved it! Upon checking into the room we began to notice things were amiss and not the same as our first stay. We found a dead fly on the windowsill that was also dusty with paint peeling off. There were small holes on the bathroom wall from a previous towel rack that was removed, and the holes were never patched. There were stains on the wall by the trash bins with a small piece of food stuck on the wall & numerous smudges and prints on the walls. If all those things were missed what kind of possible enhanced Covid cleaning was done there? Perhaps the worse part was when speaking with Mike at the front desk about it, he didn't seem concerned. He told us the room received a deep clean even after showing him pictures! We had to quickly run off to a dinner reservation and couldn't pursue it further. When checking out the next morning, it was clear no note was left. Nikkita at the front desk asked us how our stay was, and we said "it was just okay". She didn't follow up, but rather just immediately proceeded with check out. As a real estate professional I could tell there were clear deficiencies with their cleaning and maintenance crews and a lack of inspections/standards by management. We were really looking forward to our stay as we normally love the Lark style and hospitality, but this time they truly missed the mark and did not seem to care about our concerns. read more

Booked this hotel through Booking.com. When I checked out, they told me there were no pre-pays on my account and charged my credit card.. I called them once I got home and realized I was charged twice by them and Booking.com, but they refuse to remove the charges stating that there were no pre-pay on my account. I've been trying to resolve ever since. They need to get it together and understand how their promotional sites work, and not make the customer work to get things organized. I'm currently out almost $400 While I try to get this resolved. It's frustrating. The great things about this hotel is that it's located right in the middle of Salem and is in walking distance of pretty much everything. The staff were wonderful and were able to switch my reservation since I accidentally chose the wrong date. The cons are that we waited 25 minutes to check in. There was a wedding and I understand however after driving 3 hours and giving them a heads up that we would be there in 2, it was annoying. There were other small things, like the water pressure in the shower and in the sink wasn't...even there? There weren't wash cloths given as well. The micro king was cute and such, comfortable. I'm not sure if I would stay there again just because I spent $250 for one night. If you care more about location, then I would def recommend! read more

Firstly, I'd like to state the staff were amazing. Trevor from The Roof Top Bar was a doll! Shout out to him. Also, front desk staff - ALL amazing. So from a staff perspective, awesome! Secondly, location was great as well. We enjoyed being able to go to CVS quickly or head back to hotel easily. So staff and location are the highlights. TLDR: Don't stay here. And lastly, here are some of my gripes: 1) We stayed in Room 105. It was a terrible experience. There was slamming and pounding starting at about 7am on Friday, 10/1/2021. We don't know if it was Hotel Salem or a connecting building? This occurred just about each day. 2) Walls are so thin. You hear everything until the late hours of the evening. There isn't much night life in Salem so you're back at the hotel by about 10:30PM. So we heard it all when trying to relax. 3) The towels provided to us were ripped. 4) The toilet paper is so rough. Probably the worst I've ever used. 5) There are cracks on the wall, in the upper right corner of room when facing the window. 6) The shower doesn't have a small triangular shelf for your personal products. 7) The robes provided are not plush - very scratchy. Yikes. 8) The mattress felt more like a box spring. For almost $1800 for 4 nights - very disappointing. :( 9) No full length mirror in room, no phone in room, no room service. (Not sure if these are COVID19 related?) 10) The fridge was not cold at all! We were scared to place food into it. Breaks my heart to write this but we will not be staying here again. The hotel salem is a pretty cool place. The employees are awesome, and it looks really nice. However there are some issues. The biggest issue is accessibility, if you want to stay here your ass better be able to walk and walk well. The parking is pretty far away, and it's not possible to drop some off out front because of the layout of the place. My second complaint is coming straight from 1998, there are no phones in the rooms. I get it, everyone has a smart phone, but is this the overlook hotel? The inability to pick up a phone and talk to the front desk gives it a isolatingly creepy vibe at times. Would definitely stay again, provided I am healed at the revival I'm on my way to attend. *Edit to add the most important thing. There are no ice machines. Yes I know I said there was accessibility issue, but can you imagine my dismay when I make my "snow of kilamanjaro"-esq hike and I have to drink my gin and tonic without ice like a fucking pleb. Yes, very cute room that reminds me a small room in Japan- micro size room that cost over 200 dollars a night. Room I can tolerate but there no hot water in shower, full blast for over 20 minutes and still not a thing. Hotel staff can help other than tell My husband let it run, I took a chilling cold shower and pray I will not not catch cold. I will not recommend this hotel unless you don't mind cold shower. When I say micro mean, no space to store your cloth, no room phone to call front desk other than use your own phone. Keys to your room does not function properly, no TV signal, really? I know it is not hotel staff's fault but even cheap motels have hot water. Hotel is very cute and right on Essex but the price with no hot water to take shower is not tolerable, since I am not a polar bear. Thank god at least my mother in laws room has hot shower. I stayed here for a weekend to celebrate my graduation and Zachary was so amazing at the front desk. He made our stay feel so welcomed. He would always go out of his way to say good morning and suggest great things to do. He is AMAZING!!!! The room was small but very cozy and was perfect for a short stay! The beds were so comfy and i slept like an angel. The roof top bar had amazing food and sangrias. I highly Recommend this hotel for anyone staying in salem. read more

I was really disappointed. If I'm staying at a place that claims to be a boutique hotel and am splurging an average of $400 a night, for multiple nights, I expect pretty close to perfection. That was not the case. The bathroom had water damage and black specks in the ceiling. It was not mentioned. The bedding has runs and snags in it. Decorative towel had a hole in it. Toilet had a black ring. The multi use toiletries kind of concern me, as the person before me could tamper with them. At checkout I was not asked about my experience. The location is nice, staff was helpful at checkin, and housekeeping was polite. read more

This place is beautiful and chic place to stay. I think what made this place so cool, was that it was in the middle of Downtown Salem. The service was perfect and friendly. We came to this hotel during Thanksgiving weekend, and we had a perfect experience. The only problem the hotel have is that there were no microwaves in the rooms. How are people supposed to eat their food, cold? We had to eat cold food while we were there. It was difficult to try and turn the lights on and off in the room. It was confusing on which switch to handle. Overall, this is a great hotel, just make sure you know you wont get a microwave to reheat your food. read more

For the money I paid I was hoping for a much better hotel. The room and hotel is very dated and unkept. Rooms have so many damage and the elevator carpet was filthy. While it's very centric it's very touristy and dirty and not a pretty area. read more
