I went to Kirk's in old Burien because I'd been going there since I was a kid. So, when I got chickens I went to Kirk's to get supplies. In going there its old school ratty kind of place that seems to be a place that you'd see in an old western. The current owners are a bit messy and seem to be 'collectors' of old stuff. Most is just junk. Some is actual collector items. Over the last two years their prices have raised exponentially. At first prices seemed to go with what everyone was charging...or so I thought. 18 usd for 50pds organic layer feed-poultry. Then up to 25--the nest few months 30usd now its a frightening 35 + tax and, its not even 50pds any longer its 45pds. Mistakenly, I thought this was the going price for the area. Well, its not. On a fluke I went to Marysville to a feed store there...20usd for 50pds organic poultry layer feed pellets. Ok...maybe they are charging so much being close to the city. Could be...I thought I'd go there-Kirk's- just for straw ...not anymore They were out of straw bales. The not so bright guy there tell me they had sweepings 50pd bags. 7.50 . Needing to clean the coop I bought one. Normally a bale costs $14. well, I get the 'bag' which is so lite I can carry it with my finger and thumb. I was pissed. Told the guy this is no 50pds. He replys "that is a 50pd bag" Maybe in outer space. It was a bag they use to hold 50pds of seed. You guys just lost a customer. read more

I went to Kirk's as a kid and always loved the baby chickens. Now that I'm more or less grown up and interested in getting ducks of my own I visited Kirks. The store is dusky and has tropical pet birds in it, only they look really unhappy and have plucked out half of their feathers. I asked a staff person when they would start getting chicks and it he was able to tell me but also tried to push a dog food sample on me. I refused as my dog has allergies and I don't like to mess with his food and cause allergic reactions for him but the staff kept on pushing until I finally took the sample. Store used to be awesome (and may still be if your 8) but its creepy now. read more

Call it Kirks, call it Hayes It's great. So few true feed stores in the city anymore [ since Junction Feed & Seed closed ] Need straw or timothy or a bulk item? They have all the hard to find things and good advice too ! read more

I cannot say enough good things about this store and the humans that work here. We are avid caregivers to the woodland animals (squirrels, raccoons, birds) and I would normally supplement picking up a bag of nuts while grocery shopping and hit these guys up for the big orders but...the pandemic occurred. So we started going to Hayes once a week to avoid being exposed unnecessarily through the stupidity of others, they always have what we need and are always helpful and kind (they even remember our names & what we usually get!) This is missing from most retail establishments today, it's go in...get your crap and get out at most places even before the virus hit. We are so grateful to have them so we can continue to take care of the wildlife which in turn takes care of us emotionally. Thank you very much for your continued commitment to run your business with integrity and the mind set that we are all in this together and it's not each human for themselves...it's very refreshing. I love these folks! They are incredibly nice. I've been going to this store for years, and am always impressed with their knowledge about, and care for, fowl of all types- even my parrots! If you need anything farm related this is the place to start. read more

I just have to share my recent experience with Kirk's so maybe other people won't make the same mistake. In late February, I put my name on their chick list and told them I wanted 2 each of 4 common breeds. They said no problem they'll be in end of March. They weren't in when I called and finally when I called in early April, they said in a couple weeks. So I kept calling and they finally said they were in and to come in on the 18th. We did go in and he said they're not ready, maybe Monday. So I went in that Monday and the guy told me I wasn't on the chick list. I said I knew I was because I had called several times and they had always found my order. He said, I'm sorry but you're not on my list. I basically refused to leave without chicks after waiting so long. He went and found the master list and what do you know, I was on the chick list. He then told me that my whole order hadn't come in and that there was a big run on chicks and all special orders were off and I could take what they got. So I took four--two each of the two breeds they had. He said there was no guarantee that their June order would have the breeds that I had ordered either. Then he proceeded to be completely unhelpful with the supplies I needed. I asked for pine shavings and he said they were out. No idea when they would get some in. I asked if he knew if the pet store had any or where I could get some and he said, "I have no idea.". So I left with my 4 chicks and was glad I got out with that much. Then this last week I got the idea to get some of the older chicks that they had in the store when the baby chicks had come in. So I went in on Friday and they had 3 left of the now 3 month olds. I thought that would be okay and would be good to supplement my 6 week olds with older chicks. Besides, I had a friend of a friend with two 3 month olds that they would be willing to part with. So I bought two of them, and said we'd pick them up tomorrow because we still needed to finish the coop. The same guy who told me I wasn't on the chick list in April took the "SOLD" sign from the owner to tape on their cage. I went to pick them up yesterday and that same guy had sold them to someone else that day! Said he couldn't understand where the sign had been because he hadn't seen it. I said, I find it hard to believe he didn't remember putting the sign on their cage since it was just YESTERDAY. He kept apologizing and saying he'd give me a refund. Well I didn't want a refund, I wanted my chicks! I said maybe they should call the person they sold them too and say there was a mistake, that those chicks she bought were already sold. He said she paid cash and he didn't know how to get ahold of her. I'm thinking that they either asked the woman for more money and got it and so renigged on my purchase, or the woman buying them offered more. I just can't imagine they truly forgot about the sale from the day before--the owner and I had chatted at length! Even if they had got more money, how much could it have been--$5? Chickens just don't go for that much. So maybe that is the price of their integrity. Or maybe the guy is such a complete idiot that he really did forget putting the sold sign on the cage less than 24 hours earlier. I don't know. I just know I will never set foot in that store again. I will drive to the feed store in Issaquah rather than buy from this store that is only a few miles from my house. And you're right Rickie, time is money. But the aggravation and disappointment isn't worth it. read more

I've never done this before but having run across those two unfavorable reviews while looking up their phone number, I just thought I should say that I have been going there for 20 years and I don't mind cutting them some slack for not being quite like they were under the original ownership in the good ol' days. 1) new ownership DICTATES much higher operating costs (I doubt the original ownership was paying an equivalent mortgage or lease), 2) the customer base for a feed store right in the middle of town CAN'T be increasing, which probably means fewer customers and diminished sales. So I expect to pay more than I used to. More importantly however, I have experienced nothing but great customer service by friendly, helpful people. Maybe these other folks just got them on a bad day or something. I don't know anything about the chick or straw situation so can't comment on that, but I can add a final comment... I LIKE it "dusky", whatever that means... I think that means a little messy and dusty and maybe not equipped with the latest shelving and light fixtures and maybe some oddball equipment and stuff lying around, but that, to me, is just what a feed/farm store SHOULD look like! I enjoy my trips down there for my bird/squirrel/'coon/'possum/whatever feed! Long live Kirk Feed!!! (I don't WANT to have to drive to Marysville or Auburn to find a "better" one!)
