I've always wanted to drive manual transmission properly for when, or rather if, I ever get a car with this feature. I was surprised that there are not many driving schools that teach manual transmission. Those that do ask you to bring your own car!!! If i owned a manual, I would hopefully already know how to drive one. I wouldn't want to destroy a friend's or family's car. Thankfully I found this outfit, only on Yelp! Jason was quite accommodating. He offered an additional 2 hours back-to-back, knowing my schedule is busy, though I initially only agreed for 2. His car has a full set of pedals on the instructor/passenger side too. See my pic. He got me driving in Friday afternoon rush hour by the 3rd hour! We fine tuned parking and starts on hills the 4th hour. To be clear, I felt comfortable driving on regular routes at the end of the initial two-hour session, but I was very comfortable with driving and San Francisco after the 4th hour. His prices are very reasonable for the amount of attention and training he provided. The progression felt so natural. He's so good, he's on my 6 STAR list. He even offered to meet me in Daly City when his outfit is in San Francisco; I'm in San Mateo

One night at the BART station (Bayfair in the East Bay), this crackhead walked up to me wanting to start a fight because she thought I was laughing at her. First off, I didn't even look at her, I was looking at the sign to see when the train would come. Secondly, she was a white crackhead and everyone was just staring (everyone knows I didn't do anything wrong). Told my parents about it and they said all I need was a driver license, then they would immediately buy me a car. They said this because they worry that since I'm so small (4'10), one day I can get jumped or kidnapped going home or something using the bus/BART. Sigh, how much I wished for that...it seemed like it was so easy to get but yet so hard... People would always make fun of me for not knowing how to drive and I had no car to practice on even if I wanted to! My parents lived in New Orleans, LA and that was the only time I ever got to drive..in the South. Flat road, no hills. Oh the challenge when coming back to California. Since I had no car to practice on in Cali, my parents suggested I hire a driver instructor. My parents recommend this guy named T (his name will not be known) to me. Let me tell you..I did not like him! He was yelling at me and making me so sad whenever I drove because I was driving "wrong." When I got in the car with my parents, they said I drove fine. Anyways, after 2 weeks of practicing and me having no prior experience, I had to fly to New Orleans. Before I took my flight, he & I had a driving lesson together...yet did I know, this "lesson" was going to DMV and taking the real test. I knew I wasn't ready, I felt uneasy and so nervous. Well, he decided to "test" luck and made me take the driving test without even telling me. Failed. How embarrassing. When I came back from New Orleans, I was set up to drive with him again. Still yelling..just not as much as the first time. I had prior experience this time because I drove around in New Orleans. Still sad, I told my parents I didn't want him anymore. They said unless I found someone else, I would have to stay with him. So goes on the story.. I continued to drive with him. Took a second test, failed. Again! With no more confidence in me, I returned back to school in the East Bay with no time in SF. I didn't drive again, I didn't want to use my last chance until I was really ready this time. Well, one year passes and my permit expires. There was no third chance. Coming back again from New Orleans for the summer, my mom told one of her friends about my horrible experience with T. Her friend recommended this guy named Jason Tang. Oh, how little did I know, I would love Jason! I still felt uneasy behind the wheel but I had a bit of confidence. I had to retake the written test to get a new permit. Got it. Now to take my chance with the new instructor. My mom was visiting SF, so she had a chance to talk to the instructor this time. She told him about my horrible experience with my previous instructor and told him that she worried I would never pass the test, since I didn't pass it the first two times. Jason told her not to worry, because most of his students usually pass the first time. With a little hope, my mom tried not to worry. She felt uneasy about me taking the test again though. One or two weeks into driving with Jason, I was scheduled to take my driving test. Driving experience was Jason was absolutely wonderful. He's easy-going and he's very patient. Loved him! Little did I know, he was going to change my world. I passed my driving test the first time!!! 4 errors with a comment from the grader saying "Good skills!" (This was coming from the guy who failed me the 2nd time I took my test!!) Definitely recommended! Remember to ask for Jason Tang! Within a very short time during their first lesson they built confidence and had the skills to drive safely--locally, then on the highway and through rush hour in San Rafael. They learned hands-on skills and rules that were not on the permit test, and tips for their driving tests. I felt comfortable riding with them following their first lesson, and they even reminded me of some minor mistakes I was making when driving. We definitely recommend Bill as a driving instructor.

However, this review is for a driving school and not a restaurant! I can't hope to tell enough people! ***AS ALWAYS, LONG STORY SHORT, SKIP TO THE BOTTOMLINE*** Driving schools and driving instructors are not like a restaurant in that you hope that you don't ever need to go back to paying for their services. If you do, it's either because the instructor is no good, or because the student is struggling. Well, I just got back from two hours of training and I feel so great about what I learned today. I am never going to have to pay for a Class C training ever again! I called about a week ago to schedule a behind-the-wheel training and I rescheduled for this week. First of all, I am an experienced driver with a clean driving record, with no major accidents. Coming from L.A., I know what an angry/aggressive driver looks like, and how to drive defensively (will return to this in a moment). Why am I doing behind-the-wheel training? To learn how to operate a standard (manual/stick) transmission. We scheduled to meet at JLSquare, but I was running late, so Steven picked me up in front of a corner coffee shop along the way. He knew exactly where he was going and as soon as we got to a spot off Broadway where there was zero traffic, he pulled over, checked my current driver's license and we got out and switched seats. He had a sheet of handwritten notes already prepared and went through the basics of how to drive stick. I know, it's late for me to learn, but better late than never! Just a few minutes and we were off! Starting off, I didn't stall too many times, but as I got the hang of it, I started stalling more and more, until we got stalled at an intersection! !__! Bad news! But, Steven was very calm, very patient and knew how to relieve the anxiety and pressure of learning something new while actively doing it. Still, I was having a hard time, and ended up stalling again at a stop sign. I have a habit of checking my rear view too often and noticed when the guy behind us was following too close. He starts honking as I'm turning the engine over and pulls around us (in a one-lane road) and stops after the intersection, waits for us to get behind him, and gets out! He starts to yell about how I like playing games and comes up to my window. Neither of us really know what's going on and just stare at him as he's going off on us. The guy comes up to my window and punches the glass a couple times and storms off. Before he gets in, I yell, "Hey man, I'm just learning!" He speeds off. I got his plate number, but what good does that do? No harm, no foul. (But really this was an indisputable moment of legitimate assault). Needless to say, I was in disbelief that someone in the Bay would have an attitude like that and said, "What if I had a gun? Man, he's brave" Steven replied, "You know, if he hits you just a little bit, I would rather sue and make him pay big." We started making jokes and laughing about it and after this, somehow the tension is released and what he's been telling me the whole time just clicks. I can feel what brings the engine to stall, and I get what he means by "Hold! Be patient, man!" BOOM, and just like that (in the aftershock of the crazy guy) my brain understands and my body reacts and there's no more problem! No trouble at all! We even took it to the busier parts of downtown Oakland and the clustered mess by the lake. Steven does a really good job of relaxing you and convincing you not to worry about the other drivers around you, and just focus on your driving. We left it at a very good note and I feel confident to take to the streets on my own. ***BOTTOMLINE: If you need Class C behind-the-wheel driver's training, Cities is the place to call. No hassle, no bullshit. Just an experienced, relaxed and friendly instruction at a very affordable price -- cheaper than any other ones that I've found online. The catch? During lessons, the instructor, Bassir, repeatedly touched my wife on her arms, shoulders, and hands when there was no safety concern or driving-related reason to do so. There was no dangerous situation that required physical intervention, and the behavior came across as overly familiar and inappropriate. We reported the behaviour to the owner, and he first acknowledged, but later said he only watched part of the video and says this is normal requirement for their driving school to touch people. A driving instructor should maintain professionalism and clear boundaries at all times. This experience made my wife extremely uncomfortable, and we would not recommend this school to others.

I am very happy with the results of Collin Huey for a driving instructor for my teen. He was…read morepunctual and had written material to give my daughter to read and study. His teaching style sticks and you learn fast with how he explains things. After each lesson he debriefs with the student and Tells them what they need to work on. Then he will go over it with me, the parent and give me tips on where to go and what additional exercises I should practice with my teen. My teen passed with flying colors today after a 15 minute driving test. Even the DMV tester said my child has a good test score.

Going through rental companies is a pain in the ass because you need to obtain a written statement from the car rental saying they allow to be used in a driving test. So I started looking at some driving schools; I called one in the mission with high ratings and the person was extremely rude saying they don't provide a car for the test for those that are not their students. Another school in the mission with high rating requires you to take a driving lesson at least 10 days before to assess your level and the total cost would have come out at more than $450. With some luck I stumbled on Academic driving school and one call and 10 minutes later I had the car booked for my driving test which was in less than a week! The instructor showed up to my address on time, handed the driver seat to me and proceeded to give a 1 hour driving lesson in preparation to the DMV test, with tips on what to do to make sure I pass. Test, needless to say, went super smooth. Then I was dropped off back at my place. If you need a car for the DMV test look no further, it is $289 no hassle experience.
