I am a little late into the driving game, living in major cities my whole life, but finally decided to get my license after bajillion years. I researched a lot of schools and they are pretty expensive in SF or have not so great reviews. I found another instructor through Craigslist few years back, but gave up on driving after that because the instructor was nervous all the time and would suddenly yell at me which made me nervous and tense - and I definitely did not learn anything. Thanks to yelp, I found this school and Eric is such a great instructor. He is always prompt and communicative. Even if I made a mistake, he always remained calm and gave constructive feedbacks. I passed my test on my first try after 4 lessons. 3 lessons would have been enough but I just wanted extra practice and lessons parallel parking and freeway which are not part of the test. It was helpful because- well how could 2 hours of intense driving not be helpful? However, my instructor was very very difficult to understand, would forget to tell me where to turn and then get frustrated, randomly decide to turn my wheel when absolutely unnecessary, and unnecessarily used his own brake/gas when everything was running smoothly. I'm so glad Eric was my driving instructor. I'm a slightly older student. I moved to the city when I was 18 and never got around to obtaining my driver's license. I also had a bit of a hang-up on driving; San Francisco is known for its extremely angry drivers, plus I was less than confident in my ability to navigate the city's narrow and confusing streets. Eric got me through all that. Eric is consistently calm and supportive. I drove with him for more than 3 months, yet never ONCE did he scream or raise his voice at me. (You can't expect that from your own parents or friends!) I made many mistakes during the hard process of learning how to drive, but Eric gently guided me through them. He gave constructive criticism without making me feel bad. He also guided me through the DMV on test day (he knew which lines to wait in, where the bathroom was located, how to get out of there quickly, etc.). He was a great source of moral support as I was waiting for my test to begin - without him there, I don't think I could have passed. Thank you for everything, Eric! I highly recommend this guy. My teenage daughter got her permit, so it was time to find an instructor, but the thought of having her get into a car with a stranger was very unnerving. I took a leap of faith when I saw the yelp review for Regent and am glad I did. Eric has the right demeanor to be a driving instructor (it's not a job for the faint hearted). He's soft spoken, patient and gives good feedback. I was able to give him instructions on where I wanted her to practice because no sense in learning where traffic is light. Although we live in the suburbs, at least twice she drove in San Francisco, through the Sunset, Richmond, and I think almost into downtown. My daughter had her six hours with him, and we supplemented with our lessons (I'm taking credit, but it's really my husband). We paid for him to teach her for an hour before the lesson, and he booked the appointment for us. She passed on her first try! YAY! We're still not letting her drive alone yet, but we will soon. He is very invested in making you learn all the rules and techniques correctly. At the same time, he is very patient and let's you take control (essential to build that confidence for tough SF roads). He is polite, patient, and he knows what's up; he knows the common mistakes that new drivers --and all drivers-- tend to make, and he gives really helpful tips. He explains procedures clearly and knows all the best spots to bring you to practice whatever it is you need to practice (parking, turning, freeway, driving test, etc). I think that the best experience with him is when he addresses common mistakes and misconceptions made by drivers, especially newbies. His tips and tricks definitely help a lot! I grew up in New York City, so getting a driver's license wasn't a priority in my life until I moved out here. How was I going to get this done here and now? I did some browsing on Yelp and Regent seemed to offer the most reasonable price (at $56/two hours, compared to $120 in many other places) and had instructors who speak fluent English (and Cantonese). My instructor was Eric Wong, and it was a really great match. He was pretty flexible with the schedule and came to pick me up at my address (along w/ drop off). We drove around Daly City where my road test was, and he knew the routes well and was very meticulous with giving feedback. I really appreciate that he's also a calm and chill instructor, so it was not stressful at all. I felt really prepared, and I was! I passed my road test after about a month of preparation (2-3 lessons a week?) and it was in large part due to my lessons with Eric. I practiced only during our lessons and when I went home to NYC for a week, so if you can get some practice (with friends or family) in between lessons, you'd probably do great too. I highly recommend this place! I'm even going to take a couple more lessons to get more comfortable driving on the freeway. read more

I had a quick 'catch up' driving lesson today.. DMV messed up my behind the wheel driving exam - twice (they then booked an appointment at the Oakland office) but with the Bay Bridge closed I really wasn't in the mood. I've taken 3 classes with Eric and found him to be an extremely prompt, calm, and informative instructor. I got my license 8 years ago in Orange County but didn't drive more than 10 hours before getting it and never considered driving alone given my lack of experience. Essentially - I had zero driving experience. I finally decided to start lessons in the city and found Regent to be really decently priced at $65 for a two hour lesson. Eric was always on time with his Toyota Yaris and let me schedule my appointments via texts which I actually appreciated. His English is very good and he's a super friendly and chill dude while staying very focused on making sure you're driving around safely. Every lesson started with me jumping right into the driver's seat and driving around the various neighborhoods of SF so while I still don't have enough experience to actually drive around the city by myself I at least have the confidence that I can eventually after I get more practice. :) If you've been considering taking lessons I definitely recommend giving Eric at Regent a try! read more

I had few driving lessons with Eric, and I am satisfied. He is good teacher, adequate and nice. He was never late, explained clearly, and price was about $55 per 2 hours, wich is not expensive. But I don't like another school's driver instructor,don't remember his name (I called him when Eric was on vacation). To my instructor's apparent surprise, I passed my driving test with flying colors. The reason for his surprise? After the first day of instruction with him, he pretty much did everything you're not supposed to do to any driver of any skill level: He would tap my arm multiple times to give me directions as if his yelling the same word multiple times wasn't enough. This obviously made -for lack of a better term- freak out when I drove with him in the car. I had already driven in the past with a permit, but never got around getting my license, so while I had practiced driving, I wanted to make sure I knew how to drive in SF. Being with him behind the wheel was a seriously stressful situation and always made me leave with a feeling of unpleasantness. He also cancelled and postponed our appointments multiple times which I found annoying, but I guess it helped me save money in the end. I saw him a total of three times. Despite the fact that my experience with him almost made me lose confidence in my driving skills, I decided to just take the behind the wheel test to get it over with. Unlike other reviewers, I wouldn't say that language was a barrier due to the fact that his commands to me were clear in English. read more

After spending over $1200 for 30 hours at the "Uniworld Driving School" ( that clearly wants you to fail) , Regent Driving School was the best solution for me. Having failed the driving test twice, I searched for a driving instructor who could point out what was wrong with my driving. I found this place on Yelp, and asked for Eric. I had one two-hour lesson to prepare for my upcoming driving test. He was punctual and gave good driving advice in a calm, professional manner. While I was driving, he had KOIT lite rock on the radio and that helped me be more comfortable behind the wheel (I was a nervous driver at the time). We went over the three possible driving test routes several times over the two-hour lesson and I definitely felt better about my driving at the end. Since it was summer, I wanted to learn how to drive before I went off to college. My younger brother took lessons from Regent with Danny Chow and he was able to complete his lessons in 6 hours! I called them to see if Danny Chow was available, but fortunately he wasn't avaliable because then I wouldn't have met my great instructor, Eric Wong. He is by far the best driving teacher ever! My previous instructor fell asleep on me, so Eric was way better because he was awake and alert at all times! When he first came to pick me up, he let me in the driver's seat. He explained everything in detail and he would never get annoyed when I asked stupid questions multiple times. Although you may be driving around a block for 1 hour or so, it still seems so fast! The lessons went by really fast and before I knew it, I was done and I got my license! I only took about 5 lessons with him and I was able to get my license in my first try! So it's all thanks to Eric for teaching me all the skills I needed to pass my test! He also knew all the routes of the test, so when i took the test it was just like driving with Eric! So it had been a few years since I got my driver's license, and I needed a refresher course. Friend recommended David Chan from this driving school. We went through some of the things that I wanted to work on since it had been a while, and overall am quite pleased with how things went in the two hours (drove through busy city streets + freeway, and parallel parking which is something I actually never really did with my last driving instructor a few years ago). He does not waste time (or words), so you'll definitely get your two hours worth. His English isn't that great, so if Cantonese is your preferred language, pick him. read more

I have been driving for many years in France but recently moved to California. I took the one hour lesson followed by the driving test, for $95. I forgot to ask the instructor's name but he was very good. The test was at 9am and he arrived at my house bang on time at 8am. He had me drive to the DMV and then around the three test circuits that they have, all the while gently correcting the bad habits I've picked up over the years. After the lesson I was confident that I knew what to expect in the test, and I passed it without problems. The only mistakes I made were ones that the instructor had warned me about, so I've no-one to blame but myself. My only reason not to give five stars was that it was occasionally a bit hard to understand the instructor's Hong Kong accent. read more
