SLO Hayward - A legend in it's own mind. I had a product arrival question and emailed the manager about it. After two days and no response (email or phone) from the manager, I dropped by the store and had wonderful assistance from a young lady at the counter about our $36K door order. When I asked her about why the manager hadn't gotten back, she dutifully said that 'he was busy' to which I responded I don't care. I felt the young lady who assisted me was put in the line of fire while the manager sat back at his desk in the corner. Bogus. This store seems to be a somewhat 'When, or if, I get to it' business model. Although, the cabinet division 'and team' are good to work with. In the all and all, it's interesting that they don't seem to be aware of or care about their poor business model or at perhaps the execution of a good business model (?). In contrast, the Santa Maria store seems receptive to the importance of servicing customers with competence. So, I've shifted in that direction to finish our project. Stopped by to get a few SUR/SUL hangers. They were not very friendly or contractor price friendly. It felt like I was paying homeowners price. I would not recommend the Santa Maria location. The SLO location is much better read more

October 2021 Left message on the sales rep's cell about ordering doors and no return call. November called again and we ordered our $6800 set of doors - exciting! Early December was told doors would be arriving on December 21st so blocked off my Airbnb due to the noise of delivery and installation. December 21st - was told they would not be arriving so lost out on that Airbnb booking. I understand delays...just give me the worst-case scenario from the start so I can plan. January 24th - day of delivery, the sales rep emails for our address, as he can't find it. Doors are delivered and the hinges weren't placed correctly in their hinge pockets and the doors were crooked and not closing. $6800 doors should work...right? January 27th - I emailed the sales rep and he responded quickly to get something resolved. February 4th - Didn't hear back so I reach out to the sales rep to see if we can get compensation or the manufacturer out to fix this. He replied saying he's still trying to work with the dealer and wanted to come out to take pictures. We scheduled February 9 for him to take pictures and he cancels that day due to having Covid and wants to reschedule for the following week. I understand and agree that's fine. Feb 25th - I email because I haven't heard anything. March 1st - I email again...and the sales rep replies that the vendor will have an answer tomorrow about giving us a credit. March 2 - Sales rep emails - still waiting to hear back from Orepac and just got his boss involved to get an answer sooner. March 18 - I email again because I haven't heard anything. March 18 - Sales rep emails and offers to come out himself to repair the doors or he could still "push" Orepac. March 22 - I email - amazed that neither Hayward management nor the manufacturer could provide support for a $6800 door. No answer. April 18th - I called Hayward corporate office to see what could be done and she recommended I speak to the SLO store manager - I speak to store manager. April 21st - Two people come out to work on the doors and they function better. Then I was asked to write a review of my experience with Hayward Lumber, as it's not nice to say bad things about people. I don't believe he had the full story so here it is folks. Here is our truly lovely Weyrick Lumber Window order experience that I will post on their Yelp page: Rick Johnson called me back the same day I left a message Jan - ordered windows and he let me know the windows would be ready in April and gave me the name of a window installation company not associated with Weyrick. April - He contacted s the day before delivery with the timeframe the windows would be delivered in April (yay!). He made sure I still had the installer's information and also Cc'd the installer on that email. Windows delivered on time. Rick checked in that day to be sure the windows arrived and were ok. We scheduled with the installer, had the windows installed promptly, and Rick checked in later that day to be sure his recommendation worked out and we were satisfied from beginning to end. read more

I went there to buy lumber they took my monies gave me a reciept told me to go in the back lumber area to get help three guys on fork lifts just looked at me a drove by waited half an hour said screw this went and got my money back horrible system there read more

My fiancé and I walked in to price out some lumber for a deck in our backyard. Ted greeted us right away and took us through all our options... Even giving us design ideas that we are going to use. Great customer service!!! read more

My husband and I recently remodeled our kitchen and talked with a few cabinet places before deciding to go with Hayward. There was one reason we decided to work with Hayward: Chuck. Chuck is the main cabinet guy and he does a fantastic job. He was really upfront with what was necessary vs not (even if it meant they made less money) and did his best to give us all the possible options so that we could have the kitchen of our dreams. If there was ever any sort of issue, Chuck would call right away to tell us about it and tell us what to expect. One of the cabinets showed up the wrong size and chuck had a local cabinet maker come pick it up immediately and modify it so that it would work (he also gave us the option to get an entirely new cabinet). He was a dream to work with and we will definitely go back when we need to do any other remodels. I even went in there 4 months later and he remembered me by name and all about our project. Overall, fantastic service from Chuck! I was kind of surprised by the poor reviews when I came here to write one for Hayward, but it seems those bad reviews are specifically about the lumbar yard and the hardware store. I haven't had much interaction with the lumber yard and hardware store, but I get the feeling it's not a "consumer" place like Miner's or Home Depot - it's geared toward contractors who know what they're looking for and what they're doing. Regardless, the service we got from Chuck in the cabinet department was totally geared toward "consumers" and was perfect for us. The price was great, too! read more

Awful. Absolutely Insulting. If you like answers like, probably, should be, I guess, I don't know and my personal favorite, "try somewhere else" than this is your store. The manager was "helping" me and I asked if he could tell me how many 16' boards I would need for 600 sq. ft he said "I don't know". He reluctantly tried to do the math problem while struggling with a mouthful of breakfast/lunch. He then told me that a 16' board at 6" wide will cover 80 sq. ft. Wow !!! I said don't you mean 8. He said "whatever" I said you must be the manager cause I can't imagine any employee acting like I should be lucky to even walk thru the door. I said never mind I will go somewhere else. He said "bye, good luck". Wow !!! I'm sad to say this is the general sentiment in San Luis Obispo. Home Depot isn't great but they had the same material for $9.00 less per board. read more

Worst lumberyard around. I work for a local contractor who has an account there. The front desk doesn't even know how to look up material and the yard employees are absolutely worthless. They never help you load your material. Watch out when returning material, they will try to charge you a restocking fee even though they never touch it. Go to Diamond Pacific or Big Creek. They're a little out of the way but a truly full service lumber yard. You don't even touch material. They load it for you. read more

By far the worst lumber yard!! There yard guys are the most unhelpful people I've ever had to deal with. I came in one morning needing to get about 100 studs, hoping I could get someone to grab them with a forklift instead of having to hand load them myself I looked around but no one was to be seen or found. So I back my truck up to the unit of studs which had a forklift sitting right next to them and began to pick through, I was about a 1/4 of the way loaded when I hear the forklift fire up and just drive away, the guy doesn't even ask if I need a hand or even acknowledge me. So I continue loading to only have the yard boss make some Snide remark on how I should be putting them on my rack but never coming over to offer to help I guess he was too busy sitting in his office having his cup of coffee. I wouldn't recommend doing business with them unless it's your last resort. Also they don't know where there material is in there own yard and the guys also can't read a tape. It's pretty sad and very aggravating. read more

Service - definitely NOT! I ordered a replacement door & paid for it in October 2014. After endless measurements, coming to take photos, unanswered phone calls, changes in staff and screwing up the door that is waiting to be replaced I am STILL waiting. Nearly a year and nothing has gotten done. Plus one so called replacement door is still sitting on my patio (for the last 3 months or more). I think they are waiting for me to sell the house or die & just never do anything except keep the $500+ I paid. I went to Lowe's for 4 replacement windows and another sliding door. Poorly built cabinets. Falling off the wall. Multiple calls to try to get them fixed. Couldn't get any help. Would not use or recommend people who don't back up their work. Wanted to also make an adjustment in what was built & change the configuration. Pretty disappointing. read more

If you're a contractor with an account this is likely your go to place. If you are just a guy like me, who WAS a contractor and actually DOES know what he is doing but doesn't have an account, go somewhere else. These guys don't want to give you the time of day, and pricing? There is contractor pricing and homeowner pricing, night and day difference, no matter the quantity. I used a contractor to buy lumber for a project and came up short a single board. Went back to get another and the price was almost double! Explained my previous order and their answer was "So what? You're not him, this is your price." On yet another occasion, I needed a box of bolts. Most other hardware stores have single item pricing and box pricing. Hayward just has single item pricing that is about 70% higher than anyone else in town. Tell them that and they just shrug the shoulders and tell you to 'go get it somewhere else then.' Not impressed. If I could go back, I would have hired someone else. We contracted for the design, delivery, and installation of a new kitchen including countertops. The design is poor in several places: appliances collide with the cabinets and can't open fully, the cabinets are narrow and only just deep enough for plates - had we had elaborate dinner plates, we would be out of luck - the corner cabinet is close to useless, a cavernous thing no one can reach more than a third of, plus various other irritants. The color is nice. The delivery was fair, except the countertop broke and we had to wait for a replacement. The installation was horrid, to be polite. We are fairly sure the installer was not quite drug free. Whatever the cause, we had a long list of items to be fixed, including one drawer front installed upside down, several nicks and scratches, and crooked doors. The countertop is coming apart from the back splash, leaking water, and they managed to install a window sill so the window can no longer be removed for cleaning. The service was friendly when we spoke to the representative, but quite inefficient. Smiles don't fix things on their own. There was a lot of delays waiting for a response, and unless we called and caught someone in the headlights, it was difficult to get anything done. After the first round of repairs, we were supposed to have quotes for other remedial actions, but met utter silence. After several tries, I gave up and emailed that we would be done with them and not pay the $600 balance left on the deal. After telling the company twice with no response, we considered the ordeal over. I'll still have to make repairs myself. Total price: $8000-$10000. I think I might have done as poor a job of it for free. read more

My wife and I came in this morning​ to buy/order a new exterior door. As we entered the empty store the three staff people behind the counter noticed us but didn't take the time to greet us. We asked out loud where the door displays were and hearing no response​ we "found" the "showroom" to our right. After looking at the doors on display for about 10-15 minutes we found the door we wanted. We looked around to see if there was a staff/salesperson​ around to help. We even said,​ "Hello, anyone there to help us...?" We walk around​ the corner towards the front counter and saw a young lady who we asked if she could help us buy the door. She proceeded to tells us that so-and-so is not in today (pointing with a dejected look at an empty office), and another person just left to go out into the field, and so-and-so is in her office (nodding in the direction of "so-and-so's" office). I said that's fine but we want to buy a door. She said, "I can't help you and so-and-so is in her office". We said, "good-bye, you just lost a sale; maybe we'll get better treatment at Home Depot". Someone should teach their staff basic salesmanship and common courtesy​. I would suggest to management to observe staff at ACE Hardware, Home Depot, and Lowes to get an idea of​ how to treat customers (we really liked that door). read more

Just left the store - I have never in my life experienced such lack of any customer service. I am a woman and I received no help. All my questions were answered with a short answer, requests for details went ignored. Yes, completely and totally ignored. I was not accompanied to the lumber yard and ended up getting lost somewhere until one person told me I was not allowed to be where I was. Did he tell me where to go? Nope. I finally found what I needed. Anyone around? Nope. I scraped my hands getting that plywood to actually check it out. Finally do it. Go to the check out. Can't pay for it. Why? Don't have the numbers. I told them the size and material. Thankfully I was smart enough to take a picture of the nearly faded sign by the bin. Paid. Go with my receipt to back to the yard. No one here. Waited. Finally, a guys showed up. Check this out, it was his first day on the job, so he was super nice. Yay!! He goes to see how my plywood can't be cut ( total of two cuts) and comes back to tell me they cannot do it today and I should come back tomorrow. Long story short, he himself did it for me. So here you have it - one excellent caring employee and he is new. Will never go back to that place again. Siting in my truck right now outside their parking lot holding back tears. Grateful to this new guy but hurt by the rest of the staff. read more

Don't go here planning on getting help loading anything. 5 to 6 guys on forklifts in the yard but all too busy to assist with anything, it's ok I love loading 4x12 onto my truck by hand!! If they spent more time assisting with loading and Less time inspecting the back of my truck to exit the yard maybe people wouldn't feel the need to steal from them. Went to buy a Sliding Patio Door with Blinds inside, I was directed to a man who i was told would help me. I waited for approximately 4 min. for him to get off the phone. When he finally finished his call, I began to ask him questions about the doors and he seemed uninterested in helping me. He seemed to be annoyed with me. Anyway he started to answer my questions, when his phone rang and with out excusing himself or asking me to wait (again) he took the call and left me standing there. i waited for a couple of minutes and decided his call was more important than I, so i left his office and started to leave, when a young lady, seeing what had happened tried to help me. However she told me that the man would really be able to help me. She gave me a business card for another associate and told me to call her. Feeling like I wasn't worthy of this mans help and the time I wasted, I threw the card out and walked out. I will never go back to this s*** hole. read more
