While mainly overwhelmed with female clothing and items (I get it, girls are more into boutiques), there are still some secrets in here for men! They sell a large variety of fun gifts such as cards/stationary, wallets/business card holders, crazy technological watches/jewelry, gag gifts, hats/scarves, candles/home fragrances, kitchen cups/mugs, toys, and other knick-knacks and beyond. They'll even wrap the gifts gratis! They always offer seasonal products and featured designers---this means new products during each visit (unless you visit monthly like I'm always tempted to). "Like" their Facebook group and you'll have updates with all their new products. Also, it's a great place to purchase costume additions. P/S: They're going to be expanding soon (coming April 2011) with female AND male Hazel Apparel, yipee! Hopefully this means more clothes + more gift space. Oh, man. This store makes me want to communicate solely via greeting card. Imagine having to buy a gift for someone who is notoriously difficult to shop for. Let's just say that when you end up with nothing better than a Target gift card (cause let's face it, anyone, ANYONE, can spend money at Target), you will be able to put that dinky gift card into a greeting card that will completely make up for your lack of originality (or, the recipient's inappropriately high gift standards, whatever the case may be). This is one of my favorite local boutiques! I've gotten gifts for everyone from my niece to my sister to my Dad...they've got everyone covered! There is a great range of prices and I've been able to find a little something to say thank you to a good friend as well as a really nice handmade gift for someone special. They've got great pieces from local designers as well as a select offering of more mainstream product. I usually stop in there about once a month to browse, even if I'm not looking to buy. I've loved shopping at Hazel since they opened and keep coming back for the exceptional selection of merchandise, range of price points, helpful staff, and complimentary gift wrapping. This is the place I wish more small business folks to use an as example. They keep good hours( open til 7) for gasp folks that work. Never excuses or closed signs. They were packed last Christmas Eve and with smiles on their faces. Great gifts, and great old fashioned service, items are handed to you with beautiful gift wrap and a free bag (woohoo), literally around the corner and doing SO well they are expanding into a HUGE space. There should be a 6-stars option for this place. Hazel is a gem in my opinion, because I'm the type of shopper that walks around a store, and hopes something jumps out at me that says, "BUY THIS FOR YOUR GIRLFRIEND." I can spend 15 minutes in Hazel and come out with something that will make her happy, make me look good, and fit the bill for Valentines day, birthday, special occasion or random gift for no reason. They gift wrap at no charge, and do an excellent job. This is seriously the best place to buy a gift for your girlfriend or significant other. Flowers, cards, jewelry, watches, hats, ties, backpacks/handbags, balloons, buttons, books, and a lot of knick-nack stuff. Very easy shopping for a guy to accomplish. I'd heard about Hazel and thought it'd be a good place to stop in for some gifts for my gal pals. I came in and found an array of gifts: stationery, Christmas ornaments, case after case of jewelry, purses, magnets, kids' stuff, even a small selection of guys' watches, wristbands, and hats. Some of the stuff was really unique--this is the kind of place you'd want to buy someone eclectic a nice piece of jewelry. The birthday cards are enough reason alone to visit Hazel - they are hilarious. In fact if you are a 'card waffler' (can never decide on a card, have to read everyone to make sure you have the perfect card), then you may want to avoid. I myself am a card waffler, and have spent at least an hour choosing out cards - they range from beautiful artistic cards to inappropriately hilarious. And the friendly staff never minds that I stand at the card wall laughing to myself while perusing..... Not only is Hazel the Montrose mecca of everything-but-hallmark cards, they have great gifts for everyone. Clothes for the wee ones, Little Golden Books (who doesn't wax nostalgic for The Pokey Little Puppy), purses, handmade jewelry, stationary etc... Unfortunately, the men's section is just a tiny little nook of the store--but to be honest, that's much more than I expected. My birthday is coming up, and I'm very seriously considering just writing "Buy anything from the men's section at Hazel" on my birthday list. There are a few items that I wouldn't go for--namely some hats, wallets, and watches that don't fit my particular style--but everything is quirky, fun, unique, and has a great sense style to it. For example, the shelf devoted to men's care--badger's hair brush, specialty shaving soaps, shave mugs--is something I haven't seen anywhere, let alone in an odds-and-ends type shop like Hazel. Great shop! It's definitely a shop when you need a gift for someone and you want it so be special. They have some great jewelry, fun bags, stationery, candles, stickers, cards and baby gifts. They also will wrap your items too which is, I might say, one of the greatest things about this place. :) Their items vary in price so some things are pretty reasonable and some things are a bit more spendy. Oh, Hazel. How I love you. You are a ray of sunshine in my otherwise grey existence. I really do love this store. It is my go to place for cards and gifts (for both myself and others). They have an absolutely beautiful selection of jewelry (both new and vintage) and a wonderful array of unique and quirky items, not to mention some of the best cards I have ever seen. Hazel is, by far, one of the best places to shop in Chicago!!! This store is fantastic! Their selection is practically flawless and is always a pleasant experience!!! They also allow dogs and have treats behind the counter for them. Last year I did almost all of my Christmas shopping with them because they had such a great variety. With the holiday season upon us, I've come to the realization that Hazel is the only place around me that I enjoy looking for cards. They have a great selection of original cards, which are all high quality card stock. But what is great is they aren't so sappy/sentimental as the ones you find at Jewel and CVS, which I went to and became increasingly frustrated when racks and racks of Christmas cards and none would be suitable to give to my postman and super. It can be a fun store to also browse and find gifts for others. But I just stick to the cards (and to my friends who I've given these cards, they always loved them.) read more

I absolutely love Hazel! I went this weekend for the antique trunk show... awesome. I found a really neat pin and a really cute delicate bracelet. Spent no more than $40 for the 2. The people who work here are the best! They are very very helpful and always give their honest opinion. I love that they do complimentary gift wrapping. I love to browse, but I don't really buy too often. To me, it's just a little bit pricey. Especially because I've seen some of the same things in other boutiques for less. Hazel is just a great place for fun gifts. The staff is super friendly and helpful. They have style without ever being weirdly condescending (what's up with that, other quirky boutiques?). I'm not sure if she still works there, but I often end up being helped by the super tall girl, who I love. The selection is great. The accessories are lady-oriented jewelry mostly, but they also have some awesome watches for dudes that I lust after. Scarves and hats, bags, and other small wearables. Kitchen tools and fun serving pieces, salt-and-pepper sets. Soaps, candles, lotions. Occasional random toys, notecards, holiday ornaments, calendars. I like that even though some things are novelty-ish or whimsical, the place isn't overwhelmed by weird fads/jokes, like bacon-everything or mustache-everything. I always come here for cards, they have an excellent selection, especially for the holidays-- retro Christmas illustrations + glitter! As an added bonus, nothing is crazy overpriced. Some things are a little spendy, but none of it priced to where my reaction is "So not worth that". As an added added bonus, the second location of Margie's is just down the street! read more

I lean towards the punk in my aesthetics, so at times Hazel comes across a bit too cutesy and lady-like but I can always find something to catch my eye nevertheless. They carry the elusive--and almost out-of-place in comparison with the rest of their daintier lines--Defy Mafia Jewellery line (I hope they continue to do so, please. Pretty please). They also just received some more Blondie-esque zippered purses to compete with the more yuppie-like baguettes they carry (which I don't fault them for, they know the neighborhood well). I also recently spotted shadow puppet paper cutouts that made me sick with their steampunk-Victorian cuteness overload factor. But like other boutiques of their caliber, Hazel can also go wrong at times. Their very large collection of flowery, stone-focused jewelry seems a bit lackluster or 80s-ish for a boutique and more appropriate for a Midwestern classic museum shop or mall kiosk. I'd like to see more local designers in this area and featured throughout the store, for that matter. Their MOMA-like dishware section just isn't large enough and should either be expanded or done away with altogether. And like any boutique near a station stop, they should really bulk up on birthday cards (vs. blank) and keep them very, very well stocked. What I like most about Hazel though is a little-known aspect that always surprises others: they sell single flowers for $1 to $2. I'm talking odd, exotic, lovely, and generally large blooms that look exquisite in a cup or small vase on one's desk, bedside table, or bathroom sink in the morning. I almost hesitate drawing people's attention to this practice because it means I'll no longer be able to find decent blooms, but it's a secret joy that makes me a fan of Hazel beyond the other good stuff. One last note about customer service: the space is a good medium size but has a cozy vibe. Almost everything can be heard in that kind of space, but it seems sometimes that the sale folks will understandably forget this aspect. Having spent 20+ years in retail (primarily as a supervisor), it's easy for me to tell when folks behind the counter are talking about someone frustrating in the store and so I suspect it may be for other customers, as well. And while I get it--'cause people are batshit crazy for the most part--it just really shouldn't be done while other customers are in the store and all is quiet. That kind of exchange gives those overhearing customers a sense that as soon as they leave the premises they'll be gossiped about. I've been to Hazel any number of times and have only witnessed this twice. It's always been directed at another customer and I've never had a problem with the people who work there in any way, but I also don't extend myself because I've overheard that kind of thing in the past directed at others. I'm not suggesting that Hazel people should be Gap-like robots while working, but perhaps a great way to cover up this kind of thing when it "needs" to happen--humans are humans and all that jazz--is to play music in the space so that people who work there and people who shop there have a bit of privacy in their exchanges. read more

I love this store. I'm a huge Lincoln Square fan, and I figure any person can satisfy nearly any need between Eclecticity, Hanger 18, and Enjoy. Hazel, though, does it all by itself! It's kind of like if you took those 3 Lincoln Square stores and put them under one roof. You can get baby stuff, screenprinted neckties, greeting cards, and hip jewelry. I LOVE Hazel. Any time I need a quick card for a birthday or other occasion, I run here. Blank, birthday, Christmas, thank you, whatever...there is always something quirky, girly, sparkly, or unique for all of my (and my friends) tastes. I came here today and hooray! All the Christmas stuff was half off, so of course I bee-lined for the leftover cards and snagged a mailing set of vintage-inspired Paris images that came with cards, envelopes, stickers, and rubber stamps. Now I have my cards for next year already purchased! The staff is helpful and willing to show you any jewelry in cases or gift wrap items as gifts. In the back they have single stems of flowers you can purchase for cheap if you're like me and have nothing but small vases that hold maybe one or two flowers at most. The men's section is small, but if you go down the block, they have another store with men's and women's clothes. There is something for all price brackets. I can find nice headbands and necklaces for $12-30, or if you want to go a bit more high end, there are some amazing earrings, necklaces, and rings for $50 and up. It's the perfect spot for a last minute (or really thought out) gift, but don't forget a card. read more

Have you ever seen those girls that have the BEST style? They're all put together in what looks like the most effortless way. Cute purse, stylish earrings, adorable belt, etc. Yeah, that's not me. I am not a girly girl, nor am I a tomboy. I am just one of those people that has no specific style beyond being comfortable. After I was unceremoniously dumped by the last guy I dated (I'm not too proud to admit it) I thought a change was in order. So I started on a journey to better myself a bit, both inside and out. Hazel become my go-to store for a bit, because in a way it helped with both. From a purely looks standpoint, they have the CUTEST stuff there. I indulged and bought some awesome earrings and necklaces. I was always nervous to accessorize because, frankly, I didn't know how. Hazel makes it easy and I think I look pretty darn cute when I'm out and about now. Hazel also has some fun things to brighten your day (or someone else.) Cute, funny cards, little gifts, etc. I have walked through there reading cards just to make me smile. Is that weird? Perhaps. I absolutely love Hazel. I loved it before I even went inside as I was given a purse from there as a gift while I still lived in Detroit. Hazel carries mostly cards, babies/children gifts, and jewelry. They recently expanded to also carry fresh flowers. You can find gifts from $5 - $60 here. It is a perfect place to find a last minute present. The owner is extremely nice. Once I stopped by on Monday when they are closed. But this past Christmas I received a very lovely gift that was not quite for me, and being the jerk that I am, I went in to return it.
