The very first time I took my cat to this vet, I could sense something was off. Not only was it 2 or 3x the price of previous vets, but I couldn't sense the animal love as I usually do. .. Even though my baby, Cezar, wasn't due for blood work, I loved him so very much and had some extra money and just wanted to make sure everything was okay. Turned out he was a very healthy boy and I couldn't have ever imagined 2 months and 7000$ later, he would no longer be with me. I miss him every single day, and beat myself up over picking a different vet. Ive never left a yelp review, but if this will save the life of another precious baby, I will do it again and again. The front desk staff at this vet clinic was unnecessarily rude to me, and again to my son, when we called about picking up a prescription. They make the process difficult and refuse to email prescriptions, insisting on in-person pickup. When I called several hours later to check if it was ready, I was made to feel like a nuisance. Unfortunately had a bad experience yesterday at Hazel Ridge veterinary clinic. It took almost 2 hours to euthanize our little cat, who had been a patient there for several years so they knew her. Suffice to say it was stressful/traumatic for both our cat and ourselves. Most stressful was knowing our cat was in their back room getting a needle inserted into her front legs over and over without sedation, without us being able to comfort her. We've been clients at Hazel Ridge for many years, had all our cats treated there, they have been ok up to this point. I did get a phone call today from a vet on their staff apologizing for the whole process, saying it was not the way it should have been done. read more

They got greedy and wanted a piece of the prescription refill money and cut off all heart medications for my dog through Chewy. If you go here you absolutely cannot use third party pharmacies unless you want to jump through hoops or use the one I'm sure they get a kickback from. Used to be a good vet. I called to make a appointment for my cat she's not feeling well. Hazel Ridge vet over the phone told me we haven't seen your cat since 2018 so we can't see her anymore we're too booked up. So if your pet is healthy and you haven't taken them in for 4 years apparently you don't matter as a previous paying customer. I've lived next door to this vet for 14 years at the Hazel Ranch apartments. It's unfortunate but maybe a sign? I'm kind of shocked they didn't care about the cat. They basically told me to take her elsewhere. I will not be reccomending this vet for locals anymore. read more

If it weren't for the amazing Staff and knowledgeable Doctor, I would give this place a 1. I know a lot of people will think I am crazy, however every experience is different. My dog has been having ear trouble so I set up an appointment to see what it is. When I got there, the doc came in and spoke very quickly about what he was gonna do, but for some of the procedures, he didn't say a price. So to be honest, I didn't know there was a charge because I thought the exam fee included that. He did mention that the heart meds were around $50 but that's it. I also knew about the vaccines and that there would be a cost associated with them. He took my dog in the back and they flushed out his ears (extra charge that I wasn't told about) and gave him the proper meds. He added that the ear meds were a depository type and I wouldn't have them put in daily. I thanked him and didn't know there would be a different cost, I thought it was a preference. After everything was done, I got up and he stopped me stating he would take my debit card and have his staff meet me out front. As he opened the door, the staff member gave me the bill along with my debit card, and I let myself out. I was shocked at the bill! Almost $500 for a couple of vaccines and finding out what the ear problem was. I did not get a rundown of cost before things were done, he told what he was doing and did not mention at all there would be a cost associated with it. I called him and left a voicemail explaining my concern. He called back and argued with me as if I have done something wrong, and even lied and said he did tell me ALL the costs as he did them. I then asked him if he was calling a customer up to tell them they are wrong? He blatantly said "yes" I told him that I won't come back there again, he then said "sorry." Do any other vets make you pay before even seeing the bill? Seems kind of shady to me. read more

Rewind back 4 years, I adopted a seal point ragdoll kitten from the Purebred Cat Rescue in Davis and she came with some digestive issues, things coming out from both ends and excessive thirst. Luckily working in the pet business for many years, I had knowledge on what to do. I slowly started to switch her diet over to a grain free canned food, freeze dried raw and gave her raw goats milk and canned pumpkin for pets, this helped tremendously with her digestive issues and she hasn't had problems since. She still eats grain free canned cat food and I added frozen raw cat food since it's what cats eat naturally in the wild. She is doing well, including her visit on Saturday, the vet mentioned she gained a healthy amount of weight since her last appointment. My cat is on the small side for her usually large breed, tho quite fluffy, so this was great news! ..Moving on After seeing how well the company does with their clinics, I knew this was the place I wanted to take my kitty. When it came time to choosing a veterinarian to book an appointment, after reading about their doctors online, I chose Dr. Birdsall, she's been working here since 1979, so I knew she knew her stuff. My fur baby which I'm very attached to, I call her my first born, so her health is very important to me. She has been seeing her veterinarian since she was was a kitten and I couldn't be happier. From advice over the phone, health concerns, routine shots, she's always been gentle and honest and I uphold her for that. On Saturday my usually well-behaved cat was nervous and went into attack mode, when we took her to the vets, since I didn't take her last year for a check-up like I usually do on her birthday, my fault. So we had to get her shots that weren't due for some months, early. What I like about Dr. birdsall is that she talks very calmly and scruffs her which is the best way to gently calm a cat like a mother would to carry their young to a safe place or to discipline them. I use this same technique to trim my ragdoll's nails every couple weeks, bathe her or to apply her brushless toothpaste once a day, since her breed is prone to Gingivitis. If this method doesn't work I'll go behind her and hold her body firm, but gently down or I'll do the purrito "aka" swaddle her in a blanket or towel like a burrito so she feels secure and often cover her eyes so she isn't afraid. Every cat is different, it takes a lot of trial and error, demonstration videos on YouTube helped me, but the main thing is to not hurt your cat and to keep them calm and make then feel secure. I would definitely recommend booking an appointment for your fur baby, they'll take the best care of your pet, making sure they are calm and comfortable and even do a follow-up call after shots, to make sure your pet hasn't had any side effects! I wouldn't take her anywhere else! read more

We've been using Hazel Ridge since we moved here in 2019 and initially Dr. Dail was our vet and we loved her but she left the practice but we decided to stay. I'm surprised by the negative reviews I see on here because Hazel Ridge has been wonderful for us. Last week, our sweet old dog became very sick. Dr. Harris and Dr. Lance were wonderful trying to figure out what was going on with her. They spent a great deal of time w me and were very compassionate. Unfortunately, our baby had to be put down before they could definitively pinpoint what was wrong. It wasn't from their lack of trying, she was just so old and her body said enough. We wouldn't have put her through more tests in her condition. The staff up front squeezed me in on a Friday because she was really struggling and it was much appreciated. As for people that complain about having to wait, consider that the vets may be consoling a family with a very sick pet or a pet that needs special attention. The Drs at Hazel Ridge gave me that extra time and it was very much appreciated. Patience goes a long way and at some point we all need to have that special attention for our pets so waiting extra sometimes is NOT a big deal! We initially found this vet after the first 2 weren't very helpful. Puppy had been sick for a while and wasn't really getting better. The first vet, gave us a giardia treatment and shots which he had a bad reaction to. The 2nd vet examined our dog, charged us $300 for the exam and test and then tried to charge us another $500+ for more tests etc.. we wanted another opinion and found Hazel Ridge. They took him right away, were very patient and informative, and they listened to our concerns. We thought it was still giardia, 1 exam and 1 poop test and its giardia. The first medication we were prescribed isn't even used anymore. They gave is an outdated treatment. Hazel Ridge have us a powder and Bam! Much better puppy. Thank you Hazel Ridge for always being reasonable . We've stayed with them since then. I've asked for a call back on a few occasions for advise with an issue I see and they always call back. Money has been tight and they respect that we dont want to run up the bill. All the doctors and staff are organized and professional. I would recommend them to anyone. read more

This was the only vet i used in Sacramento and my dog was their patient for several years. I relocated and came back and my dog got sick he wasn't eating and it seemed he was having a hard time using the restroom so i took him here and they got him in on a cancellation which I appreciated so greatly. After a senior blood test he has stage 4 kidney failure. Literally nothing they did because he was almost 15. What upset me was they put together a "care package" of foods to feed him. I assumed it would be complimentary i just spent well over $500 for the visit and tests. Nope. Over $10/can for the food and they wanted to sell me a 15 pound bag of kibble, too, i declined. They were supposed to email me a detailed email about getting him on blood pressure medication and some other things but they only sent a copy of the second bill. The one with the food. My dog died exactly one week after taking him in. Not their fault at all but why are you trying to sell me all this food? Why didn't you EVER call to see how your patient was doing? If you have a pet with a serious condition, such as cancer, this is the vet for you. Dr. Harris provided personalized care and expertise to our dog, Bob, who had terminal cancer. This care included several medication adjustments and numerous client consultations (i.e. lengthy phone calls which were handled with much patience). We had a common goal of enabling Bob to be a "dog" for as long as possible, and Hazel Ridge was in it for the long haul. We had our "terminally ill" dog for 6.5 more years after his initial diagnosis, and we thank Dr. Harris and the Hazel Ridge team. read more

This place used to be so good. Now they are rude and lacking in customer service. I'm seeking a different clinic. The doctors are ok but the front desk staff are toxic and unhelpful. I prioritize my pet's care over money, so I don't really care what it costs, but I do expect to be treated with respect and as a customer. If I'm treated this way it leaved me wondering, are they rude and unkind to my pet when they take her into the back and run tests? If I were these Vets, I'd fire the entire front office and train up some new ones. But I will not wait for that. I'm out and I recommend you steer clear. Compared to VCA, they are great. The prices are comparable to other private vet practices. Where they shine is the level of service and attention they give. I took my wiener (dog) in to get checked out because he had a heart murmur. The vet met with me, looked at my wiener, suggested tests to help get him diagnosed. Typically with commercial places like VCA or Banfield, the vet would leave the room. A few minutes later a tech comes in with your options for the test which are is basically an inflated price list of tests or test packages you can buy. Not at Hazel Ridge! The vet actually spoke with me about my wiener after she gave him a full physical. She explained the tests and the costs. I agreed to the tests. After the tests where completed, she met with me to discuss the results. As I was paying the bill she came out to tell me she wanted a urine test because she noticed his blood work showed some potential watchpoints for his kidney function. She suggested I go outside to see if I could get my wiener to pee. She was nice enough to give me a bowl to catch his urine. In the end, I could not get any pee from my wiener so I had to take a specimen cup home. Once I collected his urine, I took it to the vet. A day or two later she personally called to give me the results and talk about options. To sum things up, I recommend Hazel Ridge Veterinary because the staff and veterinarians are helpful and seem to care about your pet and you. I applaud their clear communication. Thanks- read more

My adopted Doxie, Augustus was bleeding from his mouth and or Gums. He has a history of bad teeth and had several pulled shortly after we adopted him. Hazel Ridge was able to get him in the next day for an exam. Exam was reasonable prices and the diagnosis was he needed more teeth pulled. We were given antibiotics and an appointment was made for the next Friday. In the meantime the vet would be sending me a quote. The next day a quote was received by email. The cost would be between x and xxx. Appeared to be appropriate and reasonable. Dropped Gus off at 0800 and picked him up at 430 that afternoon. A few pain meds and antibiotics and we were on our way. Gus had 18 teeth removed, his attitude is good as is his breath. The staff at the desk are awesome as are the vets and vet techs. I bought a 8 wk old puppy last year and the first night he had diarrhea so the next day we took him in to Hazel Ridge to get checked out. We were told he had giardia and was sent home with antibiotics. He continued to have diarrhea except for one day. A few days later he stopped eating. We rushed him to an emergency Vet in Roseville and he tested positive for Parvo. Was told it would be about $6000 to treat! We had to put him down that night. If the Hazel Ridge Vet had tested for that the day we brought him in we could have gotten our money back from the owner. We not only lost a puppy but $2000 for the price of the dog with the vet bills! Now we have contaminated our yard with Parvo because it was never tested by an incompetent Vet. Negative stars for this one. When my family moved and we needed a new vet we found this office had excellent reviews...unfortunately after a couple years of being customers here, I can honestly say this is the worst office we've ever been to. Not sure how the positive reviews come into play, but here has been our repetitive issues over the years: Office visits that have appointments are never on time. We wait a minimum of half an hour after the scheduled time to be seen. This is not on occasion, but consistently. My pet has never had any fear of vets, she's always very friendly and accommodating, however, when we walk into this office, she becomes extremely anxious and tries to run out. She did not act like this our first appointment, but did every appointment after. Not a great sign. The ladies in the front have been extremely pretentious and downright rude anytime my husband or I come into the office. I see them change their tone with other customers, so maybe they are just rude to younger looking customers or customers that don't look like they come from EDH or Folsom. Little do they know how well off we actually are.Today I was told to call in prescriptions for Heartgard because it has to be filled...now if this is a common rule, that's not a problem, however one, it has NEVER been explained to me that is what is required for Heartgard and second of all, ANY other vet has no problem pulling the box off the shelf for a walk in pick up. I'm so sorry to inconvenience your very slow day sitting on your butt playing with your nails, but I don't see how difficult it is to get a box together... I felt talked down to and your face said more than you know. I don't have time for your fake smile and irritability. That's not good customer service, learn some manners. This will be the last time I ever walk into this pretentious office. Obviously, you can't be bothered to provide decent service to my family, so we will take our business elsewhere. Been taking our 11 year old lab here since he was a 5 month old pup. Vets and techs would always comment on what a great dog he is. Always thought this was a great place. Got an email for his annual check up and they can't see him until February (4 months from now). Whaaaaat? And they are still not letting people into the building, only pets. We have been loyal customers for many years, but no more! I called in Nov 2022 to make a yearly check up/vaccine appointment for my two dogs. I made the appointment for Feb 1, 2023. I asked the lady I spoke with what the total would be for everything for the visit---exam, tests, rabies vaccine and DHLP, etc--all the SAME yearly stuff we get every single year and she said $263 for both dogs. When I brought the dogs in for their appointment, I was charged $396--$133 OVER what I was quoted! When I spoke to the manager, she was very short with me and said that the prices had increased since the day I made the appointment, so I just have to pay the increased price. This hardly seems fair as I was not told on the phone that it was 'just an estimate', or anything to indicate that the price would be more than what she quoted me. After going back and forth with her she finally relented and gave me a refund of $35--big deal--I was still being overcharged $98!. After being treated with such disregard, we will no longer be taking our dogs there--There are too many vet clinics out there that value their customers and wont treat them like dirt. read more

After moving to El Dorado Hills with my two senior cats, I tried several different vets before finding Hazel Ridge and after finding it, I would never go elsewhere. I dealt with several different vets in the clinic, all of which seem very knowledgeable and seem to really care about with they are doing. It has never felt like a money-sucking venture like so many other vet clinics. First, I love that they have a split lobby: One side for dogs and another for cats. All clinics should have this. Next, Dr. Birdsall, especially, is wonderful. She seemed to take a real interest in my two furrkids and helped me through many painful and confusing situations with them. Throughout treatment, she was always available to talk to me over the phone and give me advice. I can't explain how much I appreciated that. Finally, the staff at the front desk are so nice and knowledgeable as well. This is a hard review to write, because I just recently lost my beloved 20-year old furrbaby, but Dr. Birdsall fought with me to help him healthy and painfree right up to the end. She was really there for us. It never felt like my kitty was just one of many, or pressed o do anything I was uncomfortable with, or that I was bothering her - even though I may have been, but she didn't let me feel that way. She really went above and beyond to help my kitty and help me make the right choices for him. And, also, when my other kitty passed away a few years back, they gave me a little mold of his paw print with his name, which I still cherish. In that case, too, the vets at Hazel Ridge went above and beyond. I would recommend this clinic, and especially, Dr. Birdsall to anyone who loves their "pets" like children. read more

So, I wasn't super surprised to see that other reviewers had given Hazel Ridge Vet -- 5 Stars is right. If there was a sixth, I'd throw that in for good measure. I have seen Dr. Reiser, a kind, intelligent, and compassionate vet. I am so thankful I found them. My dog has had a mystery illness for months, it's caused me a lot of grief. Between my old vet and the vets at UCD - no one could figure out what is going on! Many $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ later, no answers and one sick dog. A coworker of mine recommended Dr. Reiser, honestly, I had my doubts, but I made, yet, another appointment. We went in for a consult, then about a week later, I dropped her off for a half day - ultra sounds, xrays, lab works, etc... Everyday thereafter, I receive a call from Dr. Reiser, an update on results as they came in and a reassurance that we would get to the bottom of it. She even went as far as to post all her symptoms on a website for internists to comment and speculate on my dog's rare condition. So...here comes the truth, my dog's mystery illness is being narrowed down to a couple different possibilities. Some require invasive exploratory surgery and I'm not ready to put her through that yet. Ultimately, the care, service, and compassion I have received has changed my opinion of vets forever. Another feature is that they create a pet portal for you. You can see all your records online and request an appointment. So far it appears pretty thorough, well maintained, and user-friendly. If you're ready for a change, a vet who cares, reasonable pricing (because lord knows this is expensive). Please call them. I called them at 4:30 am because I wanted to get in as soon as I could. They called me before they were "officially" open and got us in within 1/2 hour. The veterinarian and vet assistants were all very nice. I was also called a few times to be sure the dog seemed better. Also, though it isn't important to some people, their office door has two separate entrances; one for dogs and another for cats/birds. The offices are also very clean. I have had to take the dog in a few times and the last vet told me he had to "earn" another visit. Wow, that has never happened to me before. Now my cat has been sick and they questioned my requesting a test. They definitely don't waste your money or your time. EVERY VET and member of the STAFF are WONDERFUL! read more

I have been coming to this clinic for nearly two years now and can't recommend them enough. They have treated two of our dogs: a senior mutt and a German Shepherd that we got as a puppy. At this point we've had appointments with all of the veterinarians for one thing or another. All of them are kind, patient, really listen to what you are saying, and are willing to work with you as the owner to decide what is best for your pet. They are also very knowledgeable and excellent at explaining diagnosis and treatment at a level a pet-parent can understand. We've seen Dr. Debnam and Dr. Harrod most often and I would recommend both of them. Dr. Harris and Dr. Birdsall are also wonderful. The staff and vet assistants are friendly and gentle as well. You can tell that everyone here really loves animals. They treat dogs, cats, and two of the vets also care for rabbits. I love their website with the PetPortal. You can easily log in and see a log of your past visits and also vaccination history, and you can request an appointment or send a quick message. They can be a little bit expensive compared to other vet offices in the area but I feel the cost is worth it for the service and care. They are not pushy about offering extra services like teeth cleaning and nail trims, though they offer them. Dr. Debnam and Dr. Harris took the time to consult with me over the phone several times when our senior dog, Agnes, was recently diagnosed with diabetes: even though they can't (or didn't) bill for that time. They also discussed how to monitor her condition without breaking the bank. They are all very cognizant of how expensive veterinary care can be and try to have different action plans based on that. Unfortunately Agnes passed away last month (CHF complications) despite getting all the best care. When Dr. Harrod found out, she made sure to send us a lovely condolence card just a few days later. We moved to the area about six months ago, and found Hazel Ridge pretty quickly after our move. We rescued our puppy Roxy back in November (2009) and after a couple weeks, she started developing bald patches all throughout her body. We were still living in the Bay Area at the time, and our vet down there was not very good about helping Roxy's problem, he only freaked us out about it, making us think we'd eventually need to spend $400 to MAYBE fix the problem. We did our best to maintain the problem while dealing with our move to the Sacramento area, but we knew that we'd need to deal with the problem after moving. Enter Hazel Ridge. We were able to book an appointment with Dr. Harrod the day after we called (though they actually had available appointments the day of). She was such a nice woman, and we instantly felt at ease (unlike our old vet). You can tell that Dr. Harrod isn't just out for money (unlike our old vet). She prescribed Roxy a flea and tick medication called Promeris, which also treats demodex, and it worked! Roxy is beautiful, and Dr. Harrod has a patient for life. A really special touch was the fact that a few days after our first appointment, we received a hand-written note from Dr. Harrod, welcoming us to their clinic, and it even had a special comment about Roxy in it. That meant a lot that she took the time to send that! Also, Roxy needed antibiotics for a small skin infection she had on top of the demodex. The antibiotics ended up making her throw up her food pretty quickly after eating it, and we called the clinic on a Saturday very concerned. Dr. Harrod got back to us almost immediately and showed genuine concern for Roxy. It just means a lot to be seeing a vet who actually cares more about animals than money (unlike our old vet!). read more

We almost feel like family here. The caring vets and staff at Hazel Ridge have taken care of our cats and dog for many years. They have advised us with our older cats (3) in the past 2 yrs who had serious health concerns for up to date therapeutic care, and helped make their final months more comfortable. Our other cats and dog are healthy and happy and we know they are in the best of hands. They really care. I like getting a call back to see how they are doing, even after vacs. I have brought all of my dogs to Hazelridge for years. BUT, I am done !!! Waiting on the Doctor for 45 minutes in the tiny little room, for a follow up. I finally walked out. My time was of no consequence to them. Called for a refill and they recommended us to try another drug, in two days the sore was back, oh did I say the drug was $70.00 verse the one that was working $50.00 I requested to bring the the pills back and want a refund . NO! I am sorry we can not do that...for we do not accept pills to be returned OK, how about a refund? NO, we cannot do that. Are owners of pets just stupid? It's is called nickel and dime the consumer, we are at their mercy. NO MORE!!! read more

This review is from my experience a few months ago. I learned about Hazel Ridge from a girl who helps create healthy meals for my pets. She informed me of this veterinary hospital one day as we spoke of some possible diet changes. She said they have amazing staff. I was so impressed with the service and quality of care that I'll be switching over hospitals. (One woman is a bit condescending over the phone, if you get her.. just call back or ask for someone else. Everyone else is great) read more
