This was a bar I walked past for a year before finally going in. The first time in I was all "whoa, that place is cool." It took me about six months after that to discover the peep hole. In the two years that have followed since my first visit, Hazlewood has taken on an increasingly central part of my life. I've had relationships start to unravel there, others begin to form and cement. I've stood outside and smoked in the cold and rain and wind. I've sat at the bar and (tried) to read. I've had more interesting and random conversations here than anywhere else. The bartenders are scrumptious and stupendous, usually both. You can walk in when the place is empty on a Monday night, start a conversation with the bartender, and many drinks and many conversations with many people later, it's way past bedtime. I recommend weeknights. I recommend their martinis and Manhattans (good with the house and the rye whiskey, get one of each). I recommend standing outside with the smokers. Saturday and Friday nights are fun too. Their specialty drinks are all damn tasty, I just like my drinks to kick me in the teeth more than most of those. read more

Now, with this one, I am biased. I will say it up front. These folks are as much family as friends. Drew, Keith, Miss Jessica, Sarah & Jite (Geetay) are some of the best people we have ever met. We call this bar our "living room" and we are not alone. Our connection, as it happens, goes through another "silent" owner. (if you can call him that!) that my fiance has known for years. That "connection" has budded into some great friendships. That said, I would not be attached to a bar stool here many evenings if it was not for the skill and talents of the staff. From small talk to fabulous drinks - this place is just right. Small, you feel like you are in on a secret. You want to tell everyone, but you don't want to spoil what you got. You know? Fri & Sat have a totally different feel than the rest of the week. You can reserve the upstairs for small events. There is a crazy secret in the corner that you have to see to enjoy! Each keep has a distinct and different personality. I find all of them exceptional, but you may need to spend some time to find out your favorites. The bar selection makes this a more enjoyable task. Coming in a few times means that you get to try even more of the top end and hard to find liquor that really is what makes this place stand out. No absolut or other such labels here. The well is more like the shelf at most bars. Just listen to how the bar handles the requests they can not fill - true professionals. I personally believe there should be a punch card for their drinks.... or at least a card that would tally which ones I've tried, and which ones I have yet to enjoy. Hazelwood is like a candy store for cocktails. I'm not talking silly, frou frou drinks... but real, honest and well thought out drinks that marry flavors like you've always wanted to do at home, but don't have the ingredients, time and desire to do on your own. But actually, I should be frank here... I would never come up with these concoctions and neither would my friends, god bless them all. The atmosphere is gem like with a narrow space filled with lacy ambiance and music that doesn't make you feel like your out of touch or too old. Squeeze into a ledge or cozy up to the bar and you'll find yourself exclaiming with delight about your drink with your Hazelwood comrades. This is not the place to be morose.. and if you are when you arrive, you won't be for long. My last bit of love goes out to the bartenders who treat you like humans. Thank you! I was actually torn between 2 and 3 stars on this place. Its not a bad place per se. The bartenders are nice. They have some interesting mixed drinks, if you're into that sort of thing. I am more of a beer drinker, and I don't think they have beers on tap, so they lose points for that. The main reason I wouldn't give this place 4 stars is that it seems to reek Seattle hipster in terms of people who hang out there. I stuck out like a sore thumb when I went there, and did not feel at home. If you wear a fedora and/or skinny jeans (male), you'll probably fit right in. read more

Hazlewood is a small, intimate cocktail bar in Ballard serving unique and tasty concoctions. They have a remarkable ordering concept where you can order your drinks at the bar in a line and then wait to pick it up from the bar. Then you can transport your drink to the dark and brooding upstairs area to sip on your favorite craft cocktail under candlelight. I had the Mezcal cocktail, which was smoky and tasty - basically what a Mezcal cocktail should be like. This place is ideal for a romantic date! Drinks are strong and its dimly lit. read more

Hazlewood is a treat! A delightful little nook in the heart of Ballard. I went for a walk around the neighborhood with friends and popped in here for a quick Happy Hour aperitif and was pleasantly surprised at the coziness of this charming little bar. Now remember it is small, I'd say smaller maybe the smallest lounge/bar I've been in Seattle actually. it kind of reminds me of a narrow New York style loft, with dark interiors and vintage flair. The downstairs is standing room only + a window seat, but there is a lofted upstairs, sporting a few chaise lounges and whimsical mounted candelabras. The best part: the woman waiting on us let us know you can reserve the lofted area for parties. It's not large mind you, but it would be a fun space to invite a few close friends for an intimate get-together. read more

I liked Hazlewood. It's a very small space, 2 stories, with around 4-5 small seating areas upstairs. The drinks are reasonably priced here ($8-11) for a really tasty drink. They have drinks listed, but are more than accommodating if you prefer a certain liquor over the other. I tried the bird's feet drink which I subbed w/ gin instead of vodka. They use fresh squeezed juice and my drink was very refreshing. I also tried a couple other drinks, a ginger something and a drink that tasted similar to a Manhattan. One thing that was consistent across all drinks was that they were all strong. You definitely get your money's worth here. Service wise, it was somewhat busy when we came in, but we managed to snag a couple seats upstairs on a Friday night. It's quicker to go down to the bar and order than to wait for a waitress to come up to you. read more

Big fan. I will get crowded so come early. All the cocktails I tried here were outstanding. I was a huge fan of the dark and stormy. After a few of these I asked the bartender for something different. She recommended a drink, while delicious, I don't know in good conscience I can post the name of it here. All though nothing would make me happier if a legion of yelpers went here and ordered said drink. Oh and they have a peep hole. It's upstairs in the back. If this bar was re-named Keith's it would warrant a 6th star. As it goes, he is the reason this place blew my mind when visiting the Seattle bar scene and the reason I will take home a great memory of drinking at Hazlewood. This ambiance in this place is spot-on. I would come here with a small group to get a little bent upstairs or all alone to snug up to that 4-manner bar and chat with Keith and the other soloists that evening. The lighting in here makes you feel like your back drinking in your momma's cozy, pregnant womb. And then those drinks! Holy smokes, strong and worthy. Keith's got his form down, that's for sure. He don't be tickling or nothin. The squid ink is a really cool touch. Everyone in our group was impressed. Being a visitor, I'm not to familiar with (but aware of) Ballard's upstart trendiness, but this was the most impressive bar in that district in my discriminatory mind. This is the place to go if you like liquor. They have beer, yes, but the liquor is the key to total appreciation. They have the biggest selection of bitters I've seen this side of Europe, even one made from artichokes! Order a Horse's Neck and look in the peep-hole! (when will I ever have a chance to write that again?) It's a cool, small and comfy atmosphere that has a big personality. You will probably see me there. read more

Any bar that offers a chocolate truffle and a cigarette with their staple mixed beverage, The Hazlewood, is tits in my book. This place may be small and intimate, and not ideal for large groups, but it makes up for all of that with it's amazing atmosphere and decor. Oh yeah, and look in the peep hole. Stopped in to Hazelwood for the first time on a rainy Thursday eve. That's a good time to check out bars when not crammed with egoic hipsters or wasted tourists who spill drinks on your shoes. The place was fairly empty, save for a few drinkers and very friendly and attentive Drew, co-owner and bartender par excellence. There was just one man seated at the bar wearing a brown tweed jacket, brown slacks and brown shoes. Parted brown short hair and a waxed handlebar moustache. One would expect a man dressed and coiffed as such in any other location to be at least 55, and toting a briefcase full of accounting paperwork or history 201 lessons-- but on casual inspection, he was certainly nearing 30. That's hipster Ballard. The intricately carved Indonesian cattle skulls that hang high near the retro wall sconces are beautiful and lend a EuroHarovian flavor to a tiny and otherwise sparsely decorated table-less space. An iron railing leads you upstairs to padded bench seating, shared only by a DJ's mix table. The famous peep hole was unfortunately not working, but Drew described what we were missing. I'll be back to see that soon. Let me say this: Full-bearded and affable Drew made us two of the best and most generous $9 Manhattans I've ever had. Top shelf and expertly mixed with deft mirrored ambi-dexterous moves. I was high on just one, a second would have sent me home with an imaginary ship to sail. I suspect that busy nights demand smaller portions, but i'll return to find out. In any event, I asked why no art hung on empty walls, and Drew explained that the art that once decorated the walls was stolen on a crowded night. How f***ed up is that? read more

This is a great little bar to come, sit, and unwind on a Friday night, and that's exactly what we did. Dimmed chandelier lights + candles, we sat upstairs overseeing the balcony, and it was a great corner seat for close conversations and attentive service. Recommend to come here with a small group of friends (4 max), and have an open mind to try the unique drinks they have on the menu. I asked the waitress for a recommendation, something not too sweet as I don't much like sugar in drinks, and what I got was perfect to sip on for a good conversation. While walking down to their super clean restroom, I noticed several people know the bartender and waitress rather well, and it's always nice to see returning customers making small chats by the bar and enjoying the atmosphere. Have to say parking nearby is a bit difficult, at least for me on Friday around 10:30pm. Though I discovered going on to the 22nd near the apartment condos usually have pretty big open spots. read more

Smaller than I imagined, but then again there isn't really a screamingly large venue with well-made drinks in Ballard (that I've discovered any way). Thuogh what Hazlewood does with the space it has is pretty neat. The ambiance was cozy and the vibe was pretty trendy. It's what you would expect for any hipster filled scene. I went on a Sunday and got happy hour drinks, which were well worth it. The hot toddy was done in a pretty ritualistic manner (impressive!) and came with a cinnamon stick to stir. The bartender was nice and showed a good amount of patience especially for a big group who didn't know what they wanted to drink. Overall, don't come here if you're expecting a drunk, debaucherous time in your hoodies and sweatpants. Rather, Hazlewood is a 'chillin chillin' venue where you would casual sip on your drink and bask in a cool vibe and environment. read more

I was always frightened by the austere front and hipsters blocking the doorway, but I've found that hipsters can be nice and this bar is cozy! This is one of my favorite places to go in Ballard and you'll find me here at least once a week. It may be pricey, but the cocktails are worth it and just make sure you go to happy hour once--then you'll be hooked. Drink as much as you can from 4-6 and go home toasty! The weekend is a bit too crowded, so I'm usually there for Thursday happy hour, but its a nice stop for a pre-funk on a Saturday night too. Plus, the bartenders are awesome! Too bad we weren't thirsty! This review is for the experience of walking in, checking out the menu, chatting with the bartender briefly and then leaving. But still it was an experience, thus, I'm yelping about it. Super cute! Totally dug the ashtetic- an industrial, steam punkesque vibe. It smelled amazing, strongly of citrusy goodness and there was a solid indie-rock soundtrack being filtered in not too loudly. The crowd appeared to be a group of locals, of the just got off work variety, everyone was friendly and quick to try to move down to make room for my husband and I. We would've hung out if there was anything to nibble on, but nope, just drinks. But the very friendly gal tending bar did make several nearby recommendations of where to grab some cheap eats which we were grateful for and immediately took advantage of. Wish we lived in Seattle since I really want to return. Sadly, we only spent two nights on this particular visit and what's more, only a couple of hours in Ballard. I'm confident we'll be back though. And I intend to return to Hazlewood for a hand mulled fruity cocktail! read more

I'd rather drink at home where there's places to sit and I don't have to stand in a long ass line bigger then the establishment to get an overpriced drink. The first thing you'll notice is that, yes, Hazlewood is quite small. And if you can't get past that, or the fact that seating is sparse (almost nonexistent downstairs), I wouldn't blame you. However, there is a lot of good to be found here. Prohibition-era cocktails are a great way to expand your booze vocab, since there's usually at least one ingredient you haven't tried or heard of. Plus, they're usually strong and delicious. One of them is served with a sweet little cigarette on the side. I recommend the Horse's Neck, which is only $6 during happy hour. Check out the loft upstairs -- if it's not too crowded, it's very cool and feels very exclusive. Smokers will enjoy being able to bring their drink with them out onto the little smoking patio out front. It's like drinking right out on the sidewalk! The decor at Hazlewood is dark and old and weird and vaguely spooky and yet modern and artful. It's good, in other words. The bartenders have always been cool to me, despite other reviews I've read. And you know, even when it's busy, I've found the people mingling downstairs to be surprisingly friendly, so don't be afraid to jump in and say hello. We came here for a quick drink and ended up staying for a bit. I ordered the Marguerite Punch and boy was it delicious! Yummy! I cam here with the boyfriend and a girlfriend and we all very much enjoyed ourselves. I appreciate that it's pretty chill bar...I feel like a lot of Ballard bars are just a bit intense for me, but this place doesn't feel like a meat market and actually is enjoyable to be hanging out with friends. Fun romantic little bar in Ballard. It has a ton of devoted regulars. I saw someone stop in here bags in hand on their way back from the grocery store. I've been to Hazlewood lots. Since I'm in the neighborhood, probably 20 times in the past 2 years. I love the loft, love the drink list and even kind of love the quirky art. Their signature drink, the Hazlewood comes with a chocolate truffle and a cigarette (the only time I will smoke)!!! I'm giving 3 stars because I used to like this place. My beef is: Their service has always been touch and go. Sometimes they help you, sometimes they even seem like they want to help you out, but more often than not the staff are disgruntled and grumpy. Really tiny, which can be a problem for you if you are in the mood for a more romantic less crowded place where people are not standing on top of you. The cocktails though are tastey. I rode my motorcycle in to have an after dinner drink with friends. I parked out front and was created by Steven. A warm welcome:) The drink special had a smoky mezcal and a bit too much bitters for my taste but the bartender happily replaced them and my next cocktail more then made up for it. While sipping Steven came up to find me as he saw a sweet lady back into my bike. No damage, but I was beyond happy and felt well taken care of by the staff. I will most deffinitly come back! Not a lot of seats available so this is more of a "quick stop for a drink and a chat" rather than "staying all night and have long discussions over a long line of drinks"... After having a crowded experience here on st. patty's day, my roomie and I after being ditched by a friend, we decided to just say screw it... LETS DRINK. First off, Happy Hour prices... awesome. Hazelwood is one of those places with a lot of speciality cocktails that I have not seen at other places, so taking advantage of happy hour is a must. It was a sunny Friday afternoon so there were plenty of people there, but not overwhelming. The bartender there as well was very chill, and she gave some awesome recommendations. The blackbird, still remains my favourite cocktail there (I mean seriously, squid ink, how can you resist?) But I tried out many other cocktails that were equally just as good. And my tab at the end of my time there? A lot less than I thought it would be. Awesome. read more
