After the Palisades fire, I hired Haztek to address light smoke and asbestos dust in two areas of my home. The owner, Ami, presented himself as highly experienced with wildfire remediation and repeatedly warned me that other companies--and even my insurance--would not protect my family. I have two very young children, and I relied on what he told me. Only later did I realize that most online reviews were from people who had phone consultations, not verified wildfire remediation customers. During the project, Ami also told me he was receiving many referrals from my then-State Farm adjuster after I introduced them. Without my knowledge, he brought a public adjuster to my home and was seen on my doorbell camera discussing all the work he received since that introduction. I never consented to my home being used in this way. Haztek initially sent my insurance an estimate over $160,000. After they learned my policy limit was $100,000, the estimate dropped to $84,000, and I was asked for a 50% deposit. I later learned this deposit structure is not allowed for this type of work in California. After work began, contamination increased dramatically. - Initial asbestos levels around 1,000 structures/cm² rose to over 100,000 structures/cm² in the same areas. - Lead levels that were originally within safe EPA limits (one area at 3 µg/ft²) increased to as high as 69 µg/ft² after a chimney sweep. Visible ash remained around the fireplace, in a room labeled as a clean area for furniture. When I asked about the visible ash and the results, I did not receive clear explanations. We failed two clearance tests over two months, each showing higher contamination. While this was happening, extensive demolition occurred, without permits or testing for lead/asbestos despite our home being built in 1974. This included drywall, hardwood floors, cabinetry, tile, and bathroom fixtures. I only discovered it when my doorbell camera showed my toilet sitting on my doorstep causing me to drive home and find total destruction. When I asked why I hadn't been notified, the explanation I received didn't match the dates shown on camera. I was told demolition was due to mold. Two licensed mold companies later performed moisture testing and confirmed there was no moisture problem. The demolition caused major damage to my home. I also have footage of appliances being moved in ways that damaged surrounding floors * Dust/Ash remained on multiple surfaces after work was marked complete. * When I asked what justified their costs being so much higher than companies like Servpro, no specific differences were provided. * PPE usage was inconsistent. When I was present, it was used; camera footage on other days I wasn't showed workers didn't. * Several items labeled "keep" went missing, including irreplaceable baby keepsakes. Smart devices they claimed were non-cleanable later appeared active and used at a different location, with streaming accounts still logged into and used. * Reported work hours didn't match what was captured on camera. Haztek demolished our HVAC closet, which contained popcorn material. No containment was used. I have photos of this material falling into the HVAC system and return ducts. Afterward, asbestos levels in nearby areas tested extremely high. This demolition was not part of the original wildfire or asbestos dust scope. By the time I understood what was happening, our insurance benefits were nearly exhausted, and our home was left with higher contamination and heavy damage. We ultimately discarded nearly all belongings. The impact on our family has been significant. Haztek advertises expertise in asbestos, lead, fire, and mold remediation. When I checked the CSLB website, the listed license showed a general contractor license. I was not able to locate: * A C-22 asbestos abatement license * CDPH lead abatement certification * IICRC fire or mold remediation certification If you are dealing with wildfire or hazardous cleanup, I strongly recommend verifying all licenses with the appropriate agencies, using independent third-party testing, avoiding large upfront deposits, and confirming all scope details in writing. Over a period of 2 months they failed multiple clearance testing, left visible ash behind & caused over $50K in unnecessary damage. Haztek advertises as experts in asbestos, lead, mold & fire but only hold a general contractors license. You can verify this on the CSLB website. Our experience has been devastating and I strongly warn anyone considering hiring them to read all their reviews and look up what they are actually licensed for. You'll find the majority of 5 star reviews are from customers who had phone call consultations and never actually worked with this company, which is misleading but not surprising given the things we've learned about Ami. I hired this water mitigation company after I had a flood in my house. I mainly dealt with Geraldo. He was very responsive any time I had a question, (Which I had a lot!) There's times in life when you just feel like, "Why didn't I get the Memo??" Where you go into a situation (let's say, an air-conditioning repair - simple, straightforward, right??) - .. and the Universe has other ideas about how the story will go. For example... if that A/C repair yields unexpected damage in the walls and instead of a simple repair job - the A/C company cannot even move forward because BAM!! - you've got a pipe that's been leaking slowly and creating MOLD. Not just a little... but a whole 'deep-hidden-in-the-walls' situation that's gonna require some VERY expensive steps BEFORE you can even get back to fixing the A/C. In the middle of summer. In the middle of 90 degree heat waves... Yeah. I didn't get the Memo the day was gonna turn into that kind of day... The one GREAT THING that came outta a day that I would like NEVER to repeat...?? AMI. AMI was referred by another Elite Yelp reviewer- and despite having had a full day of insanity of his OWN - when he heard the scared, overwhelmed voice on the other end of the line - REROUTED his day to ensure he could stop by to expedite testing and remediation... and a few things were VERY CLEAR: AMI and his Team at HAZTEK care very much about people. They put customers first. Profit was not at all in play - in fact he started from a very conservative point and said that we would take it slow, and figure out what was needed slowly and with proper steps to ensure we kept damage (and cost) to a minumum. When the time came to do the work, his team (led by JOSE and JESSE) were professional, kind, patient, and thorough. Our home burned and had major smoke damage. We gathered several smoke remediation quotes and HazTek is who we would have chosen. However, based on HazTek and other companies recommendations, we threw away most stuff and self remediated the little bit of stuff we had left that didn't already burn or was too much hassle to clean, or didn't want/need anymore. First I would like to say that this review is long overdue. My saga began in September of 2021 when my wife and I decided to install vinyl flooring to replace our aging carpet. Our home was built in 1971 so when the flooring contractor came to take measurements , it was found that there was asbestos tiles in our pantry and that this would need to be removed before installation of the flooring. I looked around for some remediators in the area and left messages on various voicemails. Ami Azarkman from Haztek Environmental called minutes later and I explained my situation as it looked at that time. Rather than sell me on a full remediation job, he suggested ways place a barrier in this rather small area and simply not put flooring in that area since it was not visible unless you went into the pantry. Ami spent a great deal of time with me on the phone and answered all the questions I had at that time. What impressed me most was the fact that while he knew there was no money in this for him at this point, I never felt that he was rushing me and really took the time to help. As a business owner myself, I know time is money and wouldn't have blamed him for rushing me a bit...but that never happened. Well, the saga continued as we found later that the entire bottom floor of our home completely covered in asbestos! So naturally, I called Ami back to have HazTek Environmental do the job. Ami came to our home and we really liked how relaxed he made us feel. We truly felt we could trust this man and felt he had our best interest at heart. Of course, when you have to gut an entire floor of your home, your going to need other work done, as was our case as well. Ami let us know that he had a contractor he worked with that could work in tandem with his remediation crew. Given the level of trust we had built up to that point, we had no reason not to go with his contractor associate for the floor installation and all of the other things that need to get done after a remediation...and at what we feel was a very fair price to boot. Business owners like this don't come around often. I emailed Ami to get a quote on some asbestos remediation in our new home. He was extremely responsive and scheduled a date that worked for me. It should be noted out of the four or five different companies I called he was literally the only one who called back to schedule an appointment. Either my project must've been too small or these other companies are just that careless. He came out and gave me his honest opinion of what I had ahead of me. Tl;dr: Ami and his team are really wonderful. I had a really complex asbestos abatement and he worked with me every step of the way to make sure the work was done properly, on time, and to the strict specifications of SCAQMD. Call them! I was referred to Ami and I'm so glad for that. After going through the testing process in preparation for an HVAC replacement we discovered my old house had asbestos and a LOT of it in the attic. It existed in such a way that required a 'procedure 5' cleanup - this being the most complex and scrutinized plan. Ami called me back on a Friday afternoon just to connect and ask a few questions and answer a few of mine. I was quite anxious to hear back from him and I appreciated him going the extra mile to connect so close to the weekend. He indicated to me that he'd send a quote and encouraged me to seek others. He mentioned that he would likely be in the middle of the pack, but insisted his customer service and team would be superior to any other company. I got three other quotes and Ami's assessment was correct, not the lowest and not the highest. Nevertheless, I selected Ami and HazTek because of the great reviews, the personal referral, and Ami's genuine and consistent communication. Neither he nor any other person connected to HazTek ever let me down, kept me waiting, or left me feeling uneasy. HazTek's customer service and work are indeed superior. The team that showed up were incredible. They were professional, kind, and fast. I could not believe how much material was in my attic and was taken out in such a short time. This week I got the all clear to continue work in my attic. He indeed sent me an estimate and I texted him the next day saying let's go ahead with the job. He said ok, he would be in touch, then I never heard from him again. After a few days my husband called and spoke with Paul and once again agreed to hire them and once again got ghosted. Our tight budget for house renovations was being compromised by the discovery of led and asbestos and we were panicked. We had to get asbestos testing for a remodel and our drywall came back positive. We had three rooms with drywall, but samples were only taken from one so we were going to have to all three abated. Ami swooped in and gave us great advice to help us lower our abatement costs. We followed his advice and after a little more testing we only ended up having to get 1 room abated.
