It was easy to make an appointment through Yelp and pay the $30 deposit to reserve the appointment time. On the day of my appointment, Sam and I talked for a while about what I wanted for my haircut, color, and level of maintenance I was willing to do, to find the best fit. He made sure he understood what I wanted and was straight forward with how curtain bangs would look with my straight hair without proper styling, and how copper will fade quickly. After the consultation, Sam worked his magic and 4.5 hours later (bleach, tone, wash, and cut), I left the salon happier than ever! I requested an appointment for a haircut on Yelp and immediately got a spot for the following weekend! My stylist (a younger asian man with glasses) was super attentive and constantly checking to make sure my cut was good through the entire process. The process was so relaxing that I probably could've fallen asleep. I came in with inspo pics but also let him know that I'm open to what he thinks might suit me. The final cut was a good blend of what I wanted and also what was fitting for my face shape. In the past, my ends have been really thick and bulky but he helped solve that issue by suggesting to thin some parts out. The length was cut exactly how I wanted and it was well styled afterwards. I did not get an appointment, after much back and forth the salon determined they would not be able to provide the service I was requesting. We spent the better part of a day exchanging messages and photos. I wanted a brown overall colour and cut. My hair at the time had grey at the temples, a blackish/brown and then there was bleach on the ends. I think they felt it was too complicated. Initially, I was pretty annoyed because it didn't seem complicated at all. Here's the thing, I respect a salon saying no rather than taking in a client just to make money. To me, that shows they respect their customers and honour the art of good hairstyling. Either that or they just thought I was a pain in the ass. Either way, I respect the time they took to see what I wanted and the honesty to say "we aren't your place". I have had too many times where a stylist says they understand what I want, but they don't, because I end up looking a hot mess. This place is so goated fr - their prices are really reasonable for the amazing dyeing job they do. I am very anxious about everything but I'm never anxious when I get my hair done here because I know Sam will kill it! He always understands the assignment and does the extra credit too I recently got my roots touched up after getting my hair dyed here (6 hour process unfortunately because my hair is so thick and my roots were pretty grown out but soo worth it imo - it starts at $300) and I LOVE how it came out. The blend is so seamless and the color matches my skin tone perfectly. I've confidently referred all my friends here and they're all obsessed with their hair too - Sam mixes colors based on what would best suit you personally so everyone always loves how it comes out because it's so personalized. He is also really familiar with/understands Asian hair color/texture and is careful to not damage your hair by over bleaching. I cannot recommend this place enough. I went in for a haircut as my previous haircut was growing out in an odd way. Samuel identified the issues with the previous cut and fixed everything to be more balanced and easy to maintain. He would share with me what he was planning to do throughout the haircut which was good because he pointed out things I had not considered. Perfect haircut! I was able to call in the morning and get squeezed in the same day which I'm super grateful for. The front entrance is a little hard to find but the inside is nice and spacious. Someone greeted me at the door to take my coat. The man cutting my hair was clearly very knowledgeable and he was meticulous while cutting my hair. He checked for evenness and checked in with me multiple times to make sure I was happy. Nothing super fancy about the salon, but it's definitely Asian certified. $70 since my hair is on the longer side and it took about 45 minutes including wash and styling. Pros: - They know how to cut, style, and dye Asian hair! - They do all different styles of color, including modern/trendy colors like rainbow, pastel, etc. - Very reasonable prices! They have weekend hours and are usually able to make same-week (sometimes next-day) appointments -- so you don't have to wait for months like some other places. - Very polite and friendly staff who pay attention to small details! (You do not need to be able to speak Chinese) - Clean, safe, bright, and convenient location next to the U District Link light rail station. Cons: - None! I had shoulder-length black hair and wanted to update my look for summer. I asked them to give me a lightweight, short bob cut dyed ocean blue with natural highlights and dark roots. I knew it would be a lot of work since they'd have to bleach my naturally black Asian hair. (It ended up taking around 5 hours.) The HB team was very honest with me and recommended that I use a darker and cooler blue color than what I originally wanted -- since it'll get lighter as the color fades. I wasn't quite sure how to ask for what I wanted (this is only the 2nd time I've ever colored my hair) and at first when they cut my hair I thought it still was too long. They explained how they'd have to dye it differently if I wanted to cut it shorter, and after they finished all the color my stylist cut my hair a 2nd time exactly as I wanted! This 5-star review is long overdue! Earlier this year I found out that my now-fiance was proposing to me. I had exactly 1 week before the proposal to get a hair and nail refresh. Typically these services are booked out weeks in advance so in a frantic rush I reached out to a handful of hair salons via Yelp's messaging system to see who could help with a last minute haircut and balayage. HB Hair Salon was not only the first to respond, but they were also the most responsive and accommodating to the urgency of the situation. They provided me a quote (balayage ~$300-360 depending on color + haircut $40 depending on length) over Yelp and was able to get me an appointment the next day. Sam, who has over 13 years of experience working on Asian hair, helped with the entire color and cut service and he did an amazing job! I asked for an ash brown balayage with long curtain bangs and some long layers, and the end result was better than I could have imagined. During the service, he made sure I was comfortable and was very communicative (asking about whether my hair has been dyed before, how I liked it styled, tips on how to properly care for colored hair, etc.). HB Hair Salon is reasonably priced for this type of service, and even have purple shampoo + other hair care products for sale at the salon. Wow! I was so happy about my experience that I practically ran home to write this review. First, I called on a whim on a holiday, so I definitely did not expect to get fitted on the same day! My appointment was scheduled for 3, but I showed up around 2:45 and they took me in instantly. I was working with Ken, who first washed my hair (amazing experience). there was a language barrier at first (though this should never stop you from going somewhere) but we found out we could both speak Spanish!!! Ken has over 19 years of experience, was personable, and is very skilled at cutting hair. He was an absolute pleasure to work with. Paul did my hair and he was very welcoming and worked hard to ensure that I liked the outcome! I asked for a U-cut, long layers, curtain bangs, and a bit of a curl at the end and it worked out great. The interior of the salon is also super pretty and the pricing is very reasonable ($59 for a long hair women's cut). They're also super responsive and quick to reply if you message them on Google, which is so nice. Another thing which I was lowkey worried about was being aggressively pressured to get a perm/hair color/extra treatments like some other salons do but the staff here weren't like that at all. On that note, I didn't dye my hair this time, but Paul showed me pictures of his past clients' dyed hair and they seem really good at what they do - the pictures posted by the business owner are pretty accurate.
