This is from Brandon Hospital and they told me that the doctor does not exist. I was part of a clinical trial and never got paid.
    Sheila M.

My experience at Brandon Hospital was very unpleasant, to say the least. I was scheduled to have foot surgery on February 14th at 1 pm. I was told to arrive at 11 am, the day before, however, I was called the morning of around 9 am and asked if I wanted to come in sooner. They said the doctor was running ahead of schedule so I agreed and headed out the door and when I got there it was close to 10. I told my husband to leave me there since they were going to be taking me in early. Well, they held me in the room for 3 hours before the anesthesiologist came to get me, 1 hour longer than what I was supposed to have waited originally. The doctor had even come in at the 2-hour mark and had said I would be going back very soon but another hour went by. When I first arrived, a woman came into my room and asked if I wanted to participate in a Phase 3 clinical trial study called LANTERN, a Light-Activated Antimicrobial Therapy to Prevent Surgical Site Infections. In the US, the trial was still undergoing FDA approval and Brandon Hospital was part of that trial. It's already been approved for surgeries in places like Canada, Australia, the UK, and the United Arab Emirates. From what I was told, I would be paid for my participation. It was fairly easy to do and I figured since it would prevent an infection, why not? Well guess what? I got a nasty infection at the surgical site. I was told after my surgery the surgery was supposed to have taken place within 2 hours of doing the study and they made me wait for 3. The infection set my healing back for months and I have still yet to be paid. When I called the hospital about it to find out what I should do, nobody knew anything about it. When I called the number the woman gave me paperwork on, they could not locate the doctor who was part of the research team from the hospital. The woman who came in to do the study stopped answering my phone calls and completely ignored my messages. The hospital is probably one of the worst hospitals I've ever been in. Nobody there was pleasant. Nobody there made me feel welcome. Nobody came into the room to see me. They just put me in a room and made me wait for 3 hours for my surgery. Since then I've had to see another doctor about my foot because I've still been in pain. I just had to have another surgery on it and will have to have a third. I refuse to go to the same doctor for various reasons, one of them being she only uses Brandon Hospital and I refuse to go there ever again. I will never recommend them and I will continue to tell everybody about my experience there. Beware if you're having surgery at Brandon Hospital. I'm not sure who gave the order for me to come in early. I don't know if it was the doctor or the staff but somebody screwed up and made me suffer.

I have aortic stenosis and was told I'm high risk, so clear communication and informed consent were critical. My pre-admission appointment was February 4, 2026 at 11:30 AM. During pre-admission, I was presented with a disclosure form allowing a student/fellow/resident to perform the surgery. I declined to sign and clearly told staff I did not consent to a fellow/resident performing my procedure. On the day of surgery, while I was being prepared, I was told by Dr. Adham Saad that because TGH is a training hospital, a fellow would be doing the surgery. Dr. Saad said he would be scrubbed in the room "next to the fellow," but he would not be the one performing the operation--only supervising. For a high-risk cardiac patient, that is not calming or reassuring. It felt like a coercive ultimatum: accept a trainee as the primary surgeon or lose your surgery. When I refused again, I was told the surgery would be canceled and that I'd need to find a private doctor/hospital if I wanted only the attending surgeon to perform the operation. If Dr. Saad is already going to be scrubbed in and present, it is unacceptable to pressure a patient--especially a high-risk patient--into a surgery they did not consent to, then cancel at the last minute when they stand their ground. Regardless of being a teaching hospital, patients still have the right to informed consent. This should have been clearly addressed long before surgery day, not when the patient is already prepped and vulnerable. This process caused unnecessary delay, stress, and disruption to my care.

It was quiet thank goodness, I was received cheerfully and admitted right away, I asked each caretaker their name but have forgotten some, The admitting nurse was amazing and kind, I remember she had dark hair and nice lashes and a cool script tat on her left arm. My attending nurse, Judith, (same name as my mom's, irony) was fantastic, calm, kind, nurturing. She took fantastic care of me and did not treat me like I was a hindrance. I want to say, Emily?, she took me to xray and was great and we had a nice chat about water shoes, Ecuador and earthing, there was another who did the administrative (long black hair and pretty eyes, she was cool too. I remember she had cool flower tats on her arm. Even the security guard at the entrance was super cool. The attending dr, was nice, kind and had a great bedside manner, not something I am used to from er drs. Ooh there was also a nice nurse who did my ekg. Overall despite being there under scary-ish circumstances w/super hi bp from crazy hip/back pain and stress, they made me feel welcome and cared for. The whole facility was nice, clean and modern. Every care worker in the halls, while i was being moved around was kind. It was a nice calming energy for a place that see lots of trauma and stress. So yes this is the first time I am giving 5 stars not only to TGH but an er. I am grateful for how kind and respectful the entire staff was to me yesterday, New Year's eve, when everyone should be allowed to rest w/fam & friends and bring in the new year with joy. Thank you. Happy New Year 2026!

They came out and did the same to my husband as well! The first time we went to this hospital we were seen quickly but then were rushed out to the waiting room where we waited 4 hours. I finally asked what the update was and they said we were up for discharge 2 ours before I asked for the update! They then quickly started taking out my husbands IV in front of everyone and gave us the discharge papers and we asked for a doctor to go over the results and they said, you can look up all your findings on the online chart. I then said, "how are we supposed to understand these results?" They said to google them!! In the same visit, we were walking to CT and some man was yelling for help and all the nurses kept passing by his room, not even trying to stop to help! I went a month ago for abdominal pain and they took a CT with a wallet and keys in my pocket sitting right on my abdomen!! Didn't even ask if I had anything in my pockets and I was in so much pain I didn't even think to remove things from my pockets. They said my scans were normal but I brought them a document from a CT I had had taken 1 year ago and I had issues that apparently magically disappeared in these CT scans they took. How could they even see anything with all the stuff in my pockets. Not only that, they took my blood after giving my a contrast because they forgot to draw blood when I first got there. I might be wrong but I did ask a nurse I know and they said that the contrast can mess up the blood results. Also when I came back from the CT I was shivering violently and my levels kept dropping and the machine kept beeping so their solution was to unhook the machine and ignore my complaint of violent shivering! Awful hospital.

I developed the ultimate respect when they took the stance to help my mother with long-term dementia...BCBS wanted her transferred to a county health center known as a dumping ground. They "held her hostage" for a week until Blue Cross approved an appropriate, incredible care program which ultimately placed her in a facility she LOVED and where she thrived for 8 1/2yrs. A lot has changed since then. I was asked by my out-of-state son a few weeks ago to take a phone charger to his father who had been admitted the day earlier into ER. I thought it would be an easy trip, even with my permanent concussion leaving me "weak" in formerly strong mental abilities. I drove in and immediately got lost. I saw tall buildings, a parking garage, winding drives. The ER was no longer a recognizable building with a parking lot. It had its own drive with four valets stationed. I panicked; I didn't know what to do. One of the valets came up to me, I explained my brewing meltdown re where to park. He calmly spoke to me and offered for me to pull a bit down the drive, park there by the door, and he would watch my car while I went inside. ER certainly had grown, was packed, but staff was calming and made sure I had help to where I needed to be. This was not going to be easy as my son's dad is my ex and I know his temperament. He was in his room, glad I had the cord, mad that I didn't have the charger portion which he had not said he needed.... hospitals often have extras of those. He was not pleasant, but the nurses were incredible. As I stepped outside his room, they approached me, one with a hug to calm my nerves. One, later told me her name Dylan M, said she was going to have Rachel H help find the piece he needed. It took a while to find one...I was so glad they did because he was not pleasant with anyone having to go in or out of his room to tend to his needs. Sorry to be so wordy, but I had asked their names and their supervisors' names because I wanted to make sure I wrote this review. The supervisors are Erics Avellan (mgr) and Jordan King (asst mgr). I had Dylan write the four names on a piece of paper for me. CB, my nickname for my "other half" Concussion Brain, must have misplaced the piece of paper when I got home. I couldn't find it anywhere! About 15min ago I opened my Bible and turned to the next set of verses I was to read. Yes, God made sure these angels would get their due review. God, bless these women, the job they do and the staff they work with to help their patients. The heartfelt way is still at this hospital....it may have grown, its name may have changed, but I have the same love and respect for the heart they put into their jobs!

Almost lost my son. Also my epidural was started at 3cm, ran out completely at 7cm (God awful experience) and it took them almost 3 hours to finally get the anesthesiologist back in the room to correct it. My child and I BOTH went into tachycardia which resulted in an emergency c section after 12 hours of on and off tachycardia. They kept telling me they let the anesthesiologist know about my epidural, but when they called again in front of me it was as if they had no clue about me. Over all a 35 hour horrific labor. I had to be the one to bring up a c section. They didn't even consider it. It's like you have to put them in their place to do their job almost... sat on their phones CONSTANTLY. Ignored my alarms going off STEADILY! ( the alarms that the baby's heart rate gives off) for 12 hours they were haywire, I have no clue how my child and I survived. I even told my mom at one point to let my child live and to let me die because I was so confused on what was happening to me or about to happen or why I deserved how they were treating me, my mom (a mother of 3) stood by my side so worried and confused as well. Nurses complained after my c section directly to me that they should be off shift already but because of me they weren't and gave me inexcusable behavior & attitude about it... I also had a friend come here before for her lupus situation & they kept her for weeks without any results but demanded she stayed, she lost her job when finally released with 0 medical results or progress. They will run that bill up just for you to stay longer like it's a hotel. They kept me for 2.5 weeks post-birth and it seemed like they were trying everything they could to not let my baby and I go home. For days with no explanation or reason. They also kept forcing me to breastfeed for the first two days of my child's life and since I was a c section, my milk wasn't coming in, each time I complained about my hungry child they'd force my child on my breasts. I tried everything I could and knew my body wasn't making milk. He was screaming hungry and miserable, finally a new nurse came and gave me formula. I had to cry, demand and refuse to breastfeed multiple times before someone finally helped my son and I. Even had to bring up that it was illegal for them to keep forcing me and not offering other options. Two whole days my baby barely had anything if he did have anything at all. They had the audacity to look at me crazy for not being able to make milk and my child crying... My son also had jaundice very badly (I was a new mom I didn't know what this looked like in a newborn, however they are educated medical professionals & overlooked this for over two weeks..) and they didn't check til right before we were about to be discharged (because they finally noticed no one got to do the jaundice test, again no one doing their due diligence as medical professionals) resulting in another 2 day stay. This was an exhausting and haunting experience. Felt like I had to kiss their butt to be let go or constantly bother them. Again, no explanations to why they wouldn't let us go. It was like the nurses had a lot of ego and lack of compassion... Or like they were paranoid / guilty to let me go. I could also tell the nurses were bad-talking about me I just don't understand why, I feel like anything bad in my experience was due to them entirely. My fiancé and I were doing everything we could as parents. We ended up having to get very strict with them and start bringing up laws that protected me to intimidate them to help correctly or let us go. Then I was out within a day after that (sketchy). This is my fiancés third child & he has never seen hospital staff condemn themselves in such a ruthless way to a new mom. I was seriously dissociated and pressured my entire stay and for the arrival of my child.. I clearly wanted it to be a lot more special than this at least even a little bit. However, food was above average, my surgeon that did my c section did an exceptional job for my scar, placement and healing was amazing thanks to her. I'm having my second child in a couple days and I'm 100% going to Brandon Hospital, I shared my experience with them and they were dumbfounded and I can already tell they are more hands-on & understanding with their moms in labor&delivery. Be very wary of this St Joes and their nurses. I will never get this experience of my first child back.
