Dave has been my family Vet since I was 3 years old. His compassion and expertise have been consistently amazing over the 40 years I have been his client. We once had a dog tear her meninscus and PetCare (where we also have gone if it was a weekend) quoted us $4,000 for surgery. Dave said "Or you could give her pain pills and rest and see if she heals" She healed just fine. I trust this man with all of my animals. He knows intuitively when expensive measures are not necessary and when they are. When he went into semi-retirement, I was nervous about a new doctor. But I should have known he would choose someone so special to be his successor. Dr B is just as amazing and just as capable and the kindest human. I trust her completely. I feel so very lucky to have such a caring team for my animals. My cat was diagnosed with diabetes and Dr B helped us CURE HER of her diabetes. Dr. Basurto and her team are the best in Sonoma County. I just took my cat, Annie, for her yearly exam and they were very thorough and caring. The staff is friendly and polite and very helpful. One of the women even took Annie in her carry-all out to the car while I paid the bill. Their fees are very reasonable as compared to other Veterinary clinics we've been to. This review has nothing to do with the care provided. Each time we've been here with our dogs, we've received personable and thorough treatment. However, the receptionist at the office is difficult. Her name is Heidi and she's answered the phone the last several times we've called and we've been met with nothing but tony, short and rude responses, almost as if we were inconveniencing her. I understand that things are difficult and there's a lot going on, but this is no reason to be rude to clients. If I was a new client and this was my first interaction with an office, I would certainly look elsewhere based on this alone. read more

If I could give HVH and the staff more than five stars, I would. Over the course of the past month, Dr. David McCrystle, Dr. Margaret Basurto and team have: 1) Saved the life of our Golden Retriever Tucker who had a bad case of gastric torsion (twisted and bloated stomach); and, 2) diagnosed our second Golden, Nipper, with a very aggressive case of cancer; removed a tumor; and, when the time was right (yesterday), Dr. Basurto and her vet tech Adrienne came out to our home to help send Nipper peacefully on to a better place. The skill, compassion, care and understanding of these individuals during this difficult period is so appreciated and respected. With two major operations and numerous medications and dietary adjustments, it was costly, but very, very fair. Petcare would have charged us threes times the amount we were charged for Tucker's operation -- Dr. Basurto actually took him home to her house the night of his operation, because they are not a 24/7 facility like Petcare. She monitored Tucker all night long, and kenneled her own two dogs at HVH! Only in a small town like our precious Healdsburg, with a vet that has been in business for years (since 1969 as partner and since 1985 as the owner), do you get this kind of professional, empathetic and careful care for our beloved animal companions. Thank you Margaret, Adrienne, Jenna, Kaitlin, Debbie and David for taking such good care of our "babies." I will recommend you to everyone I know and smile every time I drive by your clinic. I have gone here for 20+ years and adore both vets and the staff!! The care for both pets and owner is by far the best. The costs are fair and they are so loving to my pets!!! They are the best!! The care for the animals is tops!!! A year ago I had to put my pet down and they couldn't have been more kind and allowed me time to be with my pet and let me leave out the back as I was upset. Just a quick but important update. My kitty, Ellie, weighs only 7 lbs. I was given a bottle of 250 mg pills of metronidazole, each cut into 4 pieces (approximately 62.5 each, though they were no where near evenly cut). After I was able to trick her into eating the first piece of a pill, Ellie was really out of it (could barely walk, breathing rapidly and shallowly, couldn't follow my finger with her eyes). I told Dr. Basurto (during the visit I describe below), and she said that it just didn't make sense to her since antibiotics don't do that. I also told the vet I first met with at the new place what happened with the antibiotic, and she also was confused, saying it didn't make sense to her either. I told her that it didn't make sense, but it happened. Then she stopped and said kind of softly, "maybe they gave her 250 mg instead of 25." Yup, they did. According to the dosing directions, a low dose would be 35 mg (5 mg x 7 lbs). We discussed giving her a low dose. Instead, she got about double that (I gave her one of the larger pieces because they were all cut into different sizes.). This, alone, ensures I would never trust Ellie's health to Healdsburg Veterinary Hospital again. read more

Dr. Basurto is AMAZING! She is our Dog Healer! A few months ago... I rushed my dog to 24-emergency and he was there for 3-days (of course happened over the weekend in the early am hours!) ... I brought him home and he still wasn't right...after 3-days of 24- petcare emergency, and my dog in a drugged, comma state.:: no cure or pin point of what was wrong!!? ...he only had a "general idea of what was wrong".. 24-pet care prescribed antibiotics & pain killers... & a heafty bill $$$!!! Next morning, Monday... he was still not well... day #4. Brought him to our vet, HVH, Dr. Basurto. She figured out what was wrong with him within 1-hour of her care! He ended up having a severe bacterial infection in his intestines! She immediately administered intravenous anabiotic's. Along with a medicaltion that pushes the gases out of his instestines. I went to visit him as she wanted to keep him for a night..:: and he was his young self again!!! YAAAAY! He felt so much better because of Dr. B! I own a business & know customer service ... If I could give Dr. Basurto and her Staff more than 5 stars I would! They are very professional & compassionate! She is the Vet you want to have!!! TRUST ME!! Hands down the best veterinarian in town! Took our boxer in to get a large tumor removed and they did a fantastic job! Dr. Basurto and Adrian went above and beyond to treat our pup, Brandi. My family and I have entrusted the care of our livestock and pets since 1972 to Healdsburg Veterinary Hospital. Dr. McCrystal has treated many ailments over the years from a steer with a nail in his hoof, dairy goats with torn udders, a 4-H market hog with hives from rolling in thistle and a dog with a mouthful of porcupine quills. I have always trusted the care that he has given my animals. He has always respected my opinion on animal care and gives open and honest advice. The office staff is always courteous, respectful and caring. Whenever I call for an appointment or a question for one of the veterinarians they are always professional. I would recommend this office to anyone that is searching for an honest vet who does not want to pay outrageous vet bills like so many places do now. Dr McCrystle has been my veterinarian for over 27 years. Few people can say that about their vets. I also love the addition of Dr. Basurto to the hospital because she is equally fabulous and wonderfully empathetic. The office staff are wonderful and polite, genuinely so. Everyone goes above and beyond when needed but does not "Sell" you more services than are needed. Dr. McCrystle still uses his hands to "touch" the animals during diagnosis and does not just rely on testing to evaluate the health of my dogs. I appreciate that small fact soo much. I was very impressed with the care and concern that Dr Basurto showed for my young pup, Rocco, when she diagnosed elbow displasia in both of his elbows. Not only did she set up his corrective operation with a great orthepidec surgeon, but she continued to check up on his recovery in the weeks that followed. I have been going to this vet for 5 years with both of my Red Heelers, who have problems off and on; one of them being diabetes. I have been treated with the utmost care and respect at each and every visit. Moreover, I completely trust my animals to the doctors and the entire staff. When I became emotional after my dog's diabetes diagnosis, Dr. Basurto was responsive and sympathetic and understanding. When I call at all times of the day with countless questions, the staff is always patient and attentive. Dr. Basurto told me in the pre-surgery dental appointment that "no teeth will be extracted unless necessary" but two molars were extracted "they might have created potential problems in the future". And that might be true but only necessary extraction was agreed upon. The estimate given to me did not include the $178.00 blood work nor several medications. (The lower price attracted me to this clinic but buyer beware.) I didn't do my homework so let my expensive lesson be yours. When comparing estimates make sure they are all inclusive. read more

I took my Friend for an emergency, they charged me well and have him trow up. They promised that they where going to have the records from previous vet faxed to them. They never even try to get them and when I called to make an appointment they did not have any records! ANY, even the time that my dog was there, with me!. The lady at the phone questioned me about" are you sure this is the veterinary where you came? Like I was crazy to call them for an appointment. We've been to many vet clinics over the past 25 years in the Sonoma County area and this clinic is by far the best care our pets have ever received! The docs and staff are attentive, professional and overall awesome!! A good example is our young rescue dog is not fond of strangers and never would warm up to our previous vet. Enter Dr. McCrystle into the room and that all changed. Our little guy Bean went straight into his arms without so much as baring one tooth and they became fast friends. Our older guy Mocha received a very thorough exam and work up which identified kidney and teeth issues. After a teeth cleaning, some extractions and being prescribed a new food specifically for his needs he is doing much better. And last but not least these folks do not try to take your checkbook hostage like many of the vet clinics in this county. They took care to review every line item with us and to only charge us for what services/product were provided. I highly, highly recommend this group even if you have to drive 20 miles each way like we do to come here. Honest and kind care for your pet is so hard to find these days... It's so disheartening when this kind of care is the exception instead of the rule. Dr. McCrystal and his team (Dr. Bové too) took such incredible care of my dying cat---subjecting her only to tests that were necessary to improve her quality of life. He also armed me with a bag of sub-q fluids and shots I could give her myself to spare her the stress of a car ride and keep her comfortable at home. When the devastating time came to let her rest in peace, he came to my home so she could go to sleep in a familiar, comfortable environment. I hope he never retires---and that if/when he does--that he trains his replacements to offer the same quality of honesty, compassion and clinical savvy-ness. The veterinary community needs more people like Dr. McCrystal and Dr. Bové. I'm so grateful for all he and his team did for my kitty. Almost OK doctors, including the hospital owner, but the nastiest most disorganized staff you can imagine. Weird hours, always "understaffed," returning phone calls three days later, and generally a poor choice for your animals. They sent my less than $100 bill to a collection agency after sending me one bill, not good - hung up on me when I called to complain. Don't bother with this animal hospital, or you will be sorry and your animals will likely suffer, go somewhere else, these clowns are not worth it. read more

You are not made to feel guilty to pay 1000 and 1000 of dollars just to find out there is nothing they can do. He is a master of his craft.
