For context, a few weeks prior to this visit, during a dental emergency before I had ever been seen in person, Dr. Steven Poulos sent a prescription for pain meds to my pharmacy without hesitation or questioning. I mention this to note the contrast in how pain management was handled. For this visit, I scheduled an emergency dental appointment via text for 3:30 PM. Upon arrival, I was placed on the schedule for 4:30 PM with no notice or explanation and waited until about 4:00 PM to be seen. During my visit, X-rays showed nerve irritation. I explained that I was experiencing extreme sensitivity to cold, sweets, and even mouthwash. While performing sensitivity testing, Dr. Poulos commented on my "high pain tolerance" and made a joking remark about recommending me to the CIA or FBI. This comment felt inappropriate and unprofessional in a medical setting. I asked whether a small filling would relieve my pain immediately and was told it might or might not. I then asked if pain medication could be sent to the pharmacy if needed. Dr. Poulos initially agreed, but then asked me directly if I was a drug addict, which I found offensive but still answered no. Treatment proceeded before payment was fully resolved (it shouldn't have). When I attempted to make a partial payment and arrange to pay the remaining balance later, I was met with dismissive and snarky responses, including comments minimizing the amount owed. Partial payment was refused, and I was also unable to purchase a product the doctor had recommended for my bleeding gums. Instead of acknowledging that treatment began before payment was settled, staff implied this was my fault and stated that I should "ensure I have payment next time," framing the situation as the doctor simply being "eager to help people." This response felt inappropriate and dismissive, especially given that this was an emergency visit and a breakdown in office workflow, not patient refusal. After leaving the office, I went to the pharmacy and discovered that no prescription had been sent. When I followed up, Dr. Poulos stated he decided not to send it because he felt the medication was "too strong" for the treatment, despite previously agreeing to do so and despite my ongoing pain. Days later, I am still experiencing significant sensitivity and discomfort and am seeking a second opinion. I will be paying my balance, but I will not be returning to this practice. I am looking for a dental office that provides compassionate, respectful, and patient centered care.
