I often get all my travel medication through my primary doctor, but this time I tried Healthy Traveler. I registered online, very easy to do and chose my preferred time of appointments. I received a call back in less than 30 minutes after I submitted my request. The lady was very friendly, helpful and had an appointment available in just a few hours. I arrived at the office that has very convenient street parking or lot parking in the back. Once in the office, I was welcomed and handed a form to fill out about my destination and some personal information. About ten minutes later I was called into the back by another friendly lady. She was very informative about the country I was headed to and offered information pamphlets. I happily accepted and appreciated them as they are very helpful. There is a 65.00 office visit fee, they don't accept insurance and they will call in your prescription as soon as needed. I came here a couple of weeks before my trip to India and they were incredibly knowledgeable. They looked up every single city I was traveling to and wrote up a plan for me to start taking my malaria pills on a specific day so I didn't need to take more than I needed to. I felt very well taken care of. In general, insurance does not cover these type of travellers vaccines and the reason people come to clinics like this is because you know they'll have everything in stock without you having to ask your doctor to order it. Your normal doctor would need to order it specifically which could take time that you may not necessarily have if you're about to go on a trip. They made sure, I got all the specialty vaccines that I needed. For the normal COVID/flu/DTap vaccines, they recommended that I just go to a normal pharmacy so that insurance would cover those and make it cheaper for me (I called the pharmacy to make sure they had it before going). They also ordered antibiotics for me and sent it to the pharmacy so that I was covered in case I got some sort of bacterial infection/diarrhea during my trip - anything sent to the pharmacy is generally covered by your insurance. My family and I are traveling to West Africa next month, and the yellow fever vaccine is required. The unfortunate thing is that there is a shortage of the normally $90 shot in the US, and the European substitute (Stamaril) is $300-$350 on average. Further, there are only a handful of clinics authorized to administer it. The FORTUNATE thing is that Healthy Traveler clinic is authorized and cost-competitive (well, considering) at $298 total (no hidden fees, etc. There's another clinic charging $298 PLUS a $46 administrative fee...WTH?). Healthy Traveler is in a lovely area of Pasadena with ample street parking. The clinic is clean and serene, and your appt time is ACTUALLY your appointment time! Fill our your registration and consent forms in advanced, and it moves things along super quick. My daughters and I were lucky enough to have Patty administer our shots. She was SO friendly, patient, and had amazing distractions to help me, my 4yo, and 7yo brave the needle. That said, the shot was virtually painless and very very quick. The yellow fever shot is now life-long, so we won't need it again. But if I ever need travel shots again, I'll make my way up to Healthy Traveler! read more

There was no pressure to make any decisions about which expensive immunizations and shots I would get. They reassured me that I could think about it and stop in for the shots another day. TL;DR: look up all the shots you need on the CDC website prior to your visit, so as to avoid the $50 consultation fee. Had an upcoming trip to Egypt so popped in to this clinic at the last couple of days (like the procrastinator I am). Luckily, they have all their shots in stock and was able to get Typhoid and Hep A (1 of the 2 in the series) for less than 250. Since I knew what I wanted, I was able to waive the consultation fee, though I did get a bunch of questions answered as I was getting the shots from the nurse. Super quick and painless, whole procedure probably took less than ten seconds. If you're planning on traveling to areas prone to Malaria, you will want to have a detailed itinerary on hand for the consultation, though I believe they just end up walking you through the CDC recommendations anyway. Entered at 2:30 on the dot, left at 3:00. Most of the time was spent filling out forms. Highly recommend if you have the budget to spare, since they don't take insurance! Best experience ever! The front desk and woman giving me the vaccines were too awesome! My typhoid and yellow fever didn't even hurt. I came in disorganized and feeling flabbergasted. (Procrastination and poor record keeping at its finest). Yet left feeling safe I got all the vaccines I needed for my travels. She checked the areas I was traveling to for malaria, knew off hand tons of info. She even offered me the different options, including doxycycline which is cheaper than malarone but has more side effects. And gave me the option of purchasing it from them at $7.75/pill but encouraged me to call my pharmacy (CVS) to check if it's cheaper which it definitely is! The price we paid was some what steep, however I don't think it is way above there places, maybe 10-20% but in my opinion worth it. We had to have 2 vaccines, and 3 prescriptions, yellow fever, hep A, typhoid, malaria pills and anti diarrhea pills for our travel into the Brazilian amazon. What a smart business idea. I swear if I was a licensed physician, I would want to open the exact same kind of business (in another city though, obvi). These guys are super-efficient with their operations, and are able to get patients in and out in a jiffy (assuming you are fortunate enough to get there without any patients ahead of you in line). I have come here for my pre-travel healthcare needs twice - first in 2014 in preparation for a trip to Tanzania (Africa) + hike to the top of Mt Kilimanjaro, and again just last week for a trip to Peru to hike Machu Picchu. Both times, I waited until fairly late to get things taken care of health-wise for my trip, but this place had it ALL, including vaccinations, bug repellent, and even literature to warn me of the potential health risks of the place I was going to visit. I called inquiring about preventative immunization information and how it can benefit the community to prevent disaster. (For a class assignment, I wanted to talk to someone who could tell me about their services). The man who answered the phone (7/6/18 @ 10:36) stated the office could "could not be much help, may want to call somewhere else" in reasoning that they did not deal with disaster. Any immunization status with emphasis on prevention can prevent disaster. Come flu season, epidemic influenza periods can be avoided and controlled. The total cost for the consultation and vaccine is $289 as of April 2018. For reference, the cost was $45 for the vaccine and consultation as of April 2017 in Peru. I called in to make an appointment to get a Yellow Fever vaccine for an upcoming medical trip to Ghana. Come the day of the appointment and I found out that the gentleman I spoke with scheduled my appointment on the wrong day and ended up being treated as a walk-in. I probably should have payed more attention to the email I received though. If you schedule an appointment over the phone, they will offer to email you all the patient registration material and information for the vaccine you request. You can just fill out the paperwork at home and hand it in when you arrive, but you can also fill out the paperwork there as well. Keep in mind, they do not let you know the cost of the vaccine or whether or not your insurance will cover it, so just plan to have to pay out of pocket. If you are looking to get a Yellow Fever vaccine, it is about $240 and $44 for the consultation. TLDR; Come here if you need vaccinations for travel. I'm a rebel, so I walked in sans an appointment on a Monday and asked for a yellow fever vaccine for an upcoming trip I have planned to a far off land that requires said shot. Filling out the paperwork took more time than the actual shot. The shot was done in the blink of an eye. Literally, I blinked and the needle was in and out and bandaid applied. There was a little Q&A before the injection to go over other vaccines/shots that are suggested for the region, but I wasn't sure what shots I've had in the past, so do your homework before you go and then it can truly be a one stop precaution shop for all your foreign adventures. When you first walk in, you'll notice that the decor is cool, modern and professional. Unlike the common hospital type prisons with grey tile floors, this boutique style clinic has digital picture frames, warm paint colors, nice carpet and a friendly & educated staff. They do not accept any health insurance and WILL NOT let you know if shots are typically covered by health insurance. Shots/Pills received: -Polio Shot $62.00 (Would have been covered by Insurance) -Tetanus Shot $64.00 (Would have been covered by Insurance) -Typhoid Oral $89.00 -Yellow Fever Shot $110.00 -Malarone $147.70 - 19 Pills I feel that it is the Doctors job (if the Doctor is truly looking out for your best interest) to let the customer know to go to a different clinic for Polio/Tetanus shot if the customer has standard medical/health insurance. I understand that the doctor will lose out on a bit of money, but that is their job. 2). Doctor made me purchase much more expensive malaria medicine (malarone) since he stated doxycycline is no longer in stock and is extremely hard to find. ($147.70 for 19 pills). I was curious, so I called around at the local pharmacies, and each and every one DID have doxycycline in stock. It also turned out that my insurance DID cover the doxycycline pills. I was very unhappy to receive FALSE information from the doctor. The plus side, is that the doctor let me return the pills, which was a relief. I've been to Healthy Traveler 3-4 times. I was referred here by my primary care physician a few years back when I told her I was going abroad. She told me that HT is much more up to date on travel medicine than any other doctor would be. She was right. Website: Very thorough. Lots of valuable info. I phoned them and it was very easy to set up an apptmt. They fax you several pages of forms, and then ask you to fill them out and fax them back -- in addition to bringing the originals with you to your apptmt. That's a bit ANAL, but whatever. But speaking about anal... The first time I came here they must have had 20 signs plastered all over the office asking people not to use their cell phones. OK, I GET IT! One sign is enough! Someone there has compulsive tendencies for sure. However, you have to admit -- that these guys are super well-organized. Dr. Terry knows his stuff. Pleasant & knowledgeable. They have lots of informational handouts they give you to help you prepare for your trip. I got my shots an pills from assistant David with a minimum of discomfort. The only thing that really hurt was the INVOICE when they handed it to me. WTH?! I was in shock. The total for 3 vaccines plus anti-malaria pills came to over $400. Seriously? Ouchie! Looks like I rubbed somebody the wrong way... Dooooooood, he was ruthless with those needles. To illustrate let's define the word 'stab'. Stab: to thrust a pointed weapon into someone so as to wound or kill. He stabbed me. 4 times. He was always two inches away when he plunged needle into arm at turbo speed. Ouch! My hubby who was waiting to get his flu shot and watching me was like :0 !!! Later on, hubby said at cedars, where he got half of his vaccination shots, were much gentler. Then again HT is considerably cheaper than Cedars Sinai. Typhoid: 85 Tetanus/diphtheria/whooping cough: 57 Flu: 25 Hepatitis A: 94 Plus 15 for admin fee (they charge this because I didn't see the doctor and knew the shots I needed). If you see the doc, the consultation fee would be 50. They were super quick. In and out in less than 30 min. The male nurse administering my shots was a wee curt and short, but again I think I made a bad impression on him unknowingly. My bandaid shows blood, which means I was wounded. Having already consulted with our doctors, we came to the clinic already knowing what we needed. But then had to listen to a long sales pitch for additional, unnecessary (and expensive) immunizations and medicines. We politely turned those down, and received our shots. And walked out of the clinic absolutely shocked at the price. The clinic had marked up the Yellow Fever vaccine by a little over 100%. That's robbery. They were taking advantage of being one (of two, maybe?) clinics in Southern California that had the Yellow Fever vaccine, when the US was in short supply. Before going to this clinic, do a little research. Are other clinics offering a better price? What about receiving the vaccine in your country of destination? We could have done better. In their reply, the clinic maintains that their price is "competitive." Maybe so. Maybe the other surrounding clinics are similarly taking advantage of the lack of availability. This place is so great!!! I am going to Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos next month and the staff here is so nice and knowledgeable! Dr. Brian Terry knows just what you need for your trip. I didn't have to waste money on yellow fever shots and Japanese encephalitis causes it isn't the travel season for them. My primary doctor told me I would need them. I'm glad I went to the travel clinic. You should go there as soon as you have any idea about your intineray (other than to where and when) because the malaria pills are only needed for Cambodia and Laos. If I had known that then I wouldn't have planned to go to Vietnam, then hop over to Laos, then back to Vietnam, then down to Cambodia later. But oh well. Although it may seem odd to applaud what amounts to sound business practices, it's pretty rare these days. In our case, we moved three years ago from Pasadena and forgot which pneumonia and shingles shots we got at the Healthy Traveler Clinic over the prior years. A single call (3 years later) connected us with a friendly and helpful employee (not an interminable auto-answer, multi-level phone response system!). Wonderful! I love The Healthy Traveler, and I recommend it to everyone I know for their travel health needs. The staff is friendly and helpful. Dr. Terry is unbelievable at giving shots. My shots were practically painless - more than once, I didn't believe him that he'd give me the shot. He's that good. It's magical. If you fear needles and stabby nurses, Dr. Terry is your man. Dr. Terry also really knows his stuff. My GP had prescribed me an extremely expensive malaria prophylaxis, and didn't give us any options. Dr. Terry took one look at the prescription, explained the costs and drawbacks of all the different malaria medications, and helped us pick out a more budget-friendly one that wouldn't give me psychotic nightmares. As someone below has written, this place--clean, efficient, pleasant people--has quite the profit motive. I have to kick myself for not doing my homework before I went. The list of prices that you can't take with you was the first clue that I ignored until after the fact. The use of fear by the doctor when I decided I'd hold off on some shots because the tab was so high, was another tip off--his brother or someone died because they didn't get the right immunizations before a trip. Another tip off was that I didn't get a list of the recommended medications, immunizations that you'd think the $44 consultation would afford you should you forgo any shots there. Thankfully, I can remember the ones I decided not to get there and double check with my medical coverage. I should have checked with them first. I would have been able to get a reimbursement for the most expensive one I got there if I had requested it directly from my doctor. Now, with a travel receipt, I will not. The ruse for my medical insurance is "preventative." Not for travel. So, for the balance I am going to my MD so that I can use a receipt from him or his referral and not have to pay through the nose for the rest of what, in all fairness, seems plausible to get before my trip. If money is no object to you and you are a wealthy "rebel," choose this very pleasant, well-appointed clinic. I liked the RNs on staff. I just came back 3 hours ago from my visit here where I went for immunizations for an upcoming trip to Vietnam and China. Atmosphere extremely clean even the exam rooms were spotless. The chairs where you get your shot looks like one from Total Recall. I had so many choices to go to for my immunization shots...some that ran only $285 for everything to get you up to date (as recommended by the CDC). But given that I'm scared of needles and I haven't had a shot since I was 12 years old, I wanted to go somewhere that was more personable and had a great atmosphere. It's ALL IN MY HEAD. I signed up for only 2 shots: Tetnus and Hepatitis A. Didn't have time for the Typhoid Oral Vaccination (which requires 4 dosages every other day and doesn't kick in until 2 weeks later) and didn't want to take the 3rd shot (for the Hepatitis B). After taking the Tetnus and Hepatitis A on my left arm, I didnt' even feel the needle. I got pinched before taking the shot and before I knew it...it was OVER. Then I thought to myself, since I'm here, why not take the other 2 shots and get it over with. It wasn't that bad. So I walked out happy with 4 different shots... I was looking for a place to get my necessary vaccinations before traveling out of the country. I procrastinated to get it from my primary, and I found them on an internet search. They are local and they saw me right away. They are very thorough with exactly where you are traveling to and how long, and what you can afford in order to receive the correct vaccinations. In addition if you happen to wait too long (like me) to get the other vaccinations, they provide details on what you may catch if caught in a particular situation, what are the signs and symptoms, risks, and ways to help prevent catching unwanted illness/disease. My husband and I are going to Vietnam, and our regular doctor does not do travel vaccinations. So I emailed HTC for more information. They referred me to the CDC website to read up on shots suggested for Vietnam, so I was worried when we got to our appointment that it'd be up to us to determine which vaccines we'd get, or conversely that they'd try to sell us everything. Instead our appointment was quite nice. It turns out that it was important to read up on the vaccinations ahead of time so I could have a more informed discussion with the doctor. He went over exactly where we'd be visiting, which vaccines he recommended, asked us about our vaccine history and talked about booster shots we should have even if we weren't traveling, such as for measles. He didn't make us feel rushed and he didn't push anything on us. He gave us extra info about things like dog bites and malaria, and he gave us a prescription for antibiotics to take with Imodium if needed. The shots themselves were done quickly and felt like getting punched in the arm a few times. The only downside was that vaccinations are expensive! Shots average around $80 each, and since we needed some basic ones like Tetanus on top of the usual Thyphoid and Hep. A&B, we ended up spending $450 per person. After my personal physician failed to provide me with travel consultation and inoculations, I hopped on Yelp and Google to find a clinic that could take care of my vaccinations for an upcoming South American trip. I was so pleased to find Dr. Terry and the HTC in Pasadena. Over the phone, they were courteous and informative. They emailed appointment confirmation and paperwork. They were welcoming and professional upon my arrival, and the office was tranquil, well-decorated, and smelled like a spa. Dr. Terry was kind, honest, and informative, and he provided me with all that I needed. He even let me know about the most affordable options and counseled me on some elective immunizations (it was up to me to take 'em or leave 'em). In all, I was in and out in less than 30 minutes, got 4 different immunizations, and two travel Rx kits. No biggie. Yes, these visits and shots can be expensive and my tab ran up to $450, but the prices are provided up front on a rate card, so you know what you're getting. They are also VERY CLEAR that they do not work with any insurance carries and you are on your own if you seek to get reimbursed via insurance or FSA. I just came back from meeting with Dr. Terry at Healthy Travelers and I'm still mind-boggled at how resourceful the clinic is! You can tell that they are on top of their game. They email you all the forms that you need to fill out prior to your appointment (you are even required to fax them in - whoa!) and send you a reminder a few days before your appointment. When I came in for my appointment this morning, I didn't have to wait longer than 3 minutes. Dr. Terry was extremely informative; he even gave me detailed handouts of the different countries I will visit and the common diseases located in each area. His staff were all also very friendly (and fast!). I was in and out of the place within half an hour. A few other things: The location is fantastic - it's close to Green St & Hill with plenty of free parking on the street. Vaccines in general are pricey but if they can save your life, you might as well get them. I had 3 shots (Hepatitis A, Typhoid Fever, and Tetanus) and it came out to about $280. I'm traveling to one of the less savory regions of the Middle East in two weeks for work and needed some immunizations tout de suite. My insurance wouldn't cover it, so I checked the web for ideas and reviews. I found Healthy Traveler Clinic through the CDC (much easier than the State Dept.), made an appointment for two days later. It's clean and modern with a very friendly and helpful staff. Although they don't take insurance or bill, they worked with my employer so they could cover the charges. David was the technician who was giving the injections; Hep A & B, Meningitis, Tetanus, and Polio. All five injections took maybe 30 seconds and my arm had a fraction of the soreness of previous experiences. They offered me Typhoid pills that will last longer than the injection. I have to go back for two more boosters... Very glad I picked them. I'll happily go back for future travels. *** UPDATE *** I just read some of the bad reviews... I think you should take those with a grain of salt... Yes, Healthy Traveler's prices are not really "discount", they are not inexpensive. I guess if you're looking for "bargain" immunizations to save you from a horrible, painful death from diseases that are rampant in other parts of the world, then this is not your place. Seriously... they're saving your life. Make the investment. I will also debunk one other bad review: It was recommended that I get a series of three rabies shots; each one was pretty pricey at over $300 each. I wasn't sure if I should stick that to the company paying for these shots, so I asked to wait on them. The woman helping me gave me a rundown of the risks, but was clear that it's not a high priority immunization for my travels. She also gave me literature to help prevent getting rabies and what to do if I got bitten by a dog or bat, which is unlikely in my position. I may still go and get them after I consult with other employees returning from the region. But there were no scare tactics, she was plainly honest of the pros and cons and very nicely supported my decision. In conclusion, these are people who, yes, run a for profit business, but a business whose function is to keep you safe and alive in other regions of the world. It's time to put the Wal-Mart mentality aside and think about how valuable your life is to you. read more

Pleasantly surprised by this place. The service, staff, and nurses are polite and considerate; more importantly, they're well informed and adept at administering the vaccinations...and the place is tranquil and spotless, very well organized. It was quick and painless. Highly recommend this place if your insurance coverage, like most, does not cover voluntary travel immunizations (only the usual mandatory immunizations). They really helped me feel well prepared health-wise for my upcoming travel. There is a $44 consultation I went with even though I knew and checked the CDC website (which they also link to on their site so you're well informed). I was ok with paying for it just in case I missed anything and they gave me an antibiotic rx for azithromycin at no cost to take with me just in case which is handy to have on hand in case it takes long to get myself to a clinic abroad. Their prices are comparable anywhere otherwise for vaccinations since they get the bulk deal. read more
